Ari Aster does it again! Even with the 3 hour runtime, the story and acting kept me engaged the entire time! It definitely taps into what it's like living with anxiety and dealing with generational trauma.
Best of luck on the Pull Quote
If 3hr movies are going to start becoming the norm we need to start introducing intermission in movie theatres cause I always have to pee😂
🤣🤣
Omg, same, especially when you get a large soda
Honestly that’d be great
With that being said extra snacks as well lol
Lol. That's funny. I honestly could sit through a 4-hour movie, drink a large Iced tea, and still not have to use the restroom at any moment in the film. Luck of the draw, I guess.
Watched this one last night at the Astor (appropriate). Given I read a possibility that it might have been slightly censored in Australia, I'm really hoping that was the uncut version I saw (and you as well).
I agree it is certainly bizarre, allegorical at times, quite well-acted and strangely relatable throughout. The subtle humor contrasted with the mania and compelling performances was right up my alley. Hovering between an 8 and 9; I need to watch it again.
Final scene was heart-rending tbh. Anyone whose ever experienced any degree of gaslighting in an abusive family dynamic will probably leave the theater shook. Never seen a movie like this and I don't think I ever will again lol
I also teared up at the end! I actually turned to my partner and said “Is Ari Aster okay?” He may need a collective fan hug after this film especially the last scene. Super meta and chilling #airhugari ❤
💯💯💯💯💯
Im not a film student, nor do I claim to possess an expertise in cinematography, but in my opinion this was horror - it’s what I would call a disturbed horror with elements of humor. Great review on your part!
Definitely worthy going to the cinema for this. The screening I went to were like 4 other couples but the silence as we were toned between amazement and disbelief was fantastic and like you say those moment were you are both laughing with disbelief while also wanting to cry... Iconic
Horror has been a therapeutic outlet for me because I can channel my anxiety into films with ghosts and masked killers while being removed from the actual threat of danger. I haven't watched this one, but it strikes me as something that may hit too close to home to be as fun and cathartic of an experience. I don't doubt it is a brilliant film, though.
Same boat. Same with Skinnamarink and smile
I totally relate to this.
@@_SunscreenQueen_bruh what smile was just a stupid horror movie it didn’t rlly do anything special anything it tried was hella superficial def does not belong in the same category
I cannot wait to see this movie!! At this point, I'm just beyond intrigued and need to see it for myself 🤣 Thanks for the review, Emma 🥰
Thanks for hanging with me!
As soon as I got home from this movie I started throwing up nonstop. I found out later there’s a stomach virus going around at work but at first I was like… this is clearly that movie’s fault somehow haha. But man what a ride of a film! It overwhelms all the senses. Definitely planning to see it in theaters again!
I went to the cinema alone (as usual) today and sadly used alcohol to cope, so took a few wee breaks... but didn't suffer narrative wise... holy HELL... incredible. I think Ari has probably isolated himself ala Lars Von Trier. This is DARK(ly funny) and deeply nightmarish. I thought it was awesome, but only because it pushed me in ways I have never been pushed before... I don't need tasteless directors to start trying to do this... Noe, Trier, Cronenberg, yes fine... this can't become a trend.
i’m about to see this movie tomorrow i am SO excited !!! this was uploaded in perfect timing for me 😭
Waiting for the it on bluray so I can rent it at redbox 😊
I saw it last night!!!! I think central theme in this movie affected me quite deeply because I haven’t stopped thinking about it
Same I feel you ❤️
I just have to wait for you next time! I fell for another “spoiler free “ review from a reviewer that I actually normally like, and a couple things got spoiled that I really didn’t want to know! ☹️ I appreciate how mindful you always are about spoilers, yet still so detailed in your description without spoiling anything. You are the best! Looking forward to this one. 😃😁
Oh no! I always have your back dont worry. I am SOOOO careful since i feel similarly, i hate spoilers
The best way for me to describe this movie is it’s surreal in the way I wanted I’m Thinking of Ending Things to be
You didn’t think that I’m thinking of Ending Things was surreal?
10/10 for me, BEAU IS AFRAID is the best film since maybe Prospero's Books. A visual essay on consciousness, hermetic philosophy and spiritual rebalancing.
Aster weaves in recurring Kubrickian motifs: monoliths, masks, pentagrams, low-hanging circles, diamonds, along with obvious nods to each of SK's films and Wizard of Oz (emerald clothing/unconditional love, rainbows, brick, fib spirals). "You're the same-- except for your face and body" Elaine Bray (Light-Brick) to Beau. Goodbye stranger, hope to see your point of view. We see Beau through the elevator monolith on the left, representing Wendy Torrance's (The Shining) mental breakdown (see Wendy Theory-- Kubrick retelling Oz) and Beau's courageous half being locked in his mother's attic while she feeds him mind-control pills (Clockwork Orange ref). Sparks flying as the door opens symbolize The Covenent of Parts-- "They would be strangers in a land where they would become oppressed and enslaved. The Hebrew term for establishing a treaty between two parties is 'kritat brit' which literally means 'dividing'". Masks and monoliths are inverse of one another (1- Amalgamation of Mona's MW/medium-wave "employees" for her low frequency/vibration/red transmission/mask on wall - standing tall like the Virgin Mary/radio tower, 2- Stars revealed as audience viewing 4 monoliths in arena lit by cosmic latte (average color of universe), later seen exiting theater as if unaware of the starlight from behind/hitting their eyes). Flamingo (feeds young with milk resembling blood-- not Kosher--- that give its young beta carotene needed for pink color [Mona calls him both Angel and Carrot] with legs crossed into a 4 (YHWH/GOD) to the upper-left corner of Toni's doorway adjacent to a string of transparent pentangles signifying Beau's is one of an infinite line of tests to restore balance. Painful impact brings Beau into this strange stage-- strange bed, caretakers, sister, decorative aspects-- monstera plants throughout in pebbles-- no soil for Carrot/Beau to take "root" (chakras)-- evidenced as Grace "turns" on him (note inverse pentagrams on her son's bed)-- Beau similarly becomes an interference, impediment, hinderance to her grief-- on hands/knees with a baby mask/blue lips (cyanosis?). Roger, Grace, Mona and Dr. Cohen represent multiplicity in 4 directions, Beau as the unifying centerpoint. Roger carries an American football before he leaves to "Roger" Grace-- it's a prolate spheroid-- shape of nebulae, animal testis, atomic nuclei AND the MW logo-- he suggests Beau not perform any jumping jacks-- aka star jacks-- derived from the puppet toy-- activated by pulling string in opposite directions. "Don't incriminate yourself" written on a paper napkin-- ref to Ezekial 18:4: all souls are God's, his life not being his own to dispose of but God's alone (channel 78 on Roger/Grace's monolith ref to psalm 78-- narrative around the inverse relationship between God's goodness/man's badness) They have Beau's odyssey on DVR so we're watching from their TV/monolith while the 4 world elephants (Hinduism) support the 4 arena monoliths that project out-of-context recordings on the world. Our cinematic monolith/film screen reflects our inherent "otherness" back upon us, a conglomeration of stars eerily familiar but never among us/the living. The complete rainbow symbolizes Beau's 360 rotation rebalancing as he eventually rediscovers the wisdom, empathy, and finally courage to confront his mother/Wicked Witch, his foot/carrot/flamingo leg stuck in the "moon pool" as the fish gets his wish (note how he tugs at his therapist's prescription, winning the larger bone/his secret wishes-- a real family, that she were dead-- we later see a wishbone in a tree outside Mona's house-- Mona spoke/listened to Beau through every character he interacts with, including his puppet therapist, confirming her love from her POV.)
After a somewhat restless Hereditary and Midsommar audience, I was surprised to sit in a dead silent theater during Beau is Afraid.
I'm one of the people that this movie wasn't for. My main gripe with it is that it's way too long. I personally believe the entire forest part - although visually very nice - could have been left out and we wouldn't have missed it.
I did like the first part of the movie, though, and maybe the rest of the movie will grow on me eventually (like Midsommar did).
This film gave me so much anxiety on the drive home. Not in the theatre. Never experienced that with any other film. The most shocking reaction I’ve gotten out of Aris three features. Loved it
Yea I feel this, I haven’t stopped thinking about it
OMG I just finished it and WOW this film is a MASTERPIECE. As a therapist this film was the most accurate depiction of what it's like in the mind of someone with generational trauma, child abuse, and major anxiety. Wow. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time.
So, would this appeal to people who like David Lynch films? Your use of "surreal" has me expecting something along those lines.
i mean yeah, but its nothing like his stuff. Id say this makes more sense haha
This started out at the anxiety level of the climax of 'Mother' and just went into orbit! 😂
I saw it Friday, and if nothing else you can definitely say this movie is an experience. I’m really thankful to have seen it on a big screen - I’m not sure it would be the same experience watching it at home. If someone has an interest in movies that are “out there” and not so much a reflection of normal reality, I would definitely recommend Beau.
I'm so pumped for this movie......going to see this on Saturday in gold class
Phoenix is always the best! This sounds like it is right up my alley. Your previous recommendations have been spot on for me for “ different” films, so I’ll definitely give this a watch. Thanks for your honesty and clarity in all your reviews! ❤️
I always appreciate the spoiler free reviews but i am DYING to know all your spoiler thoughts! just saying i’d watch a part 2 to this video lol
haha yeah i thought about it... but its a film that i really dont like the idea of picking apart too much, more reflecting on it as a whole. When i see it again i might do one for the patreon.
I always struggle to keep my focus when watching movies, but this one got my attention from the first minute to the last second. I watched it yesterday and still need to proceed what I got from it, but it definitely didn't disappoint me!
Loved the review, can't wait to see the movie.
Also love that it looks like your head is floating because your clothes and everything around you are black. 😂
Sending love to everyone in the UK cus we have to wait until 19th May 😭😭 I’m so hyped
Sorry to hear about this, that’s so sucky
This movie effected me hard because it perfectly incapsulates living as a disabled person post 2020 that’s just my take away though
Same❤
I didn't think I'd love anything as much as Skinamarink but Beau is Afraid has now become my favorite movie of the year. Ari Aster just continues to amaze me. I loved Hereditary and Midsommar, but his latest effort might have just topped both movies for me. I can't wait to see where he goes from here.
I am beyond excited to see this in the cinemas. What an amazing review, got me even more hyped haha I am so glad you liked it!
I've always wondered where your man/person going with you to the cinema goes when you record these in the car 😂 in my mind they just awkwardly stand there for like an hour or however long it takes to record. Please can you tell me cause it's been on my mind for the past few months and I really gotta know, do they stand there, do they go get something to drink/eat, TELL ME EMMA 😭😂
Also great review, can't wait to watch this when it releases in South-Africa, love Ari's work and I love weird surreal stuff so I'm pretty hyped!
I went to the movies by myself :)
This is probably a movie that I really need to be in a better (emotional) mindset to see, and not the escapism type movie I need to see! Thankful for your review as always; I'll save this for.... a rainy day?
Yes it’s a great rainy day one !
I just got around to watching this and wow! I am seeing a recurring theme with Ari's work; I just want to hold him and tell him I'm so sorry for your trauma. Beautifully F'ed Up!
I love that you said your favorite Todd Solondz film is Palindromes. You don’t hear that a lot, and it is one of my all-time favorites.
For all the ups and downs (all of which I loved and I wish this movie was longer), it’s the ending that really puts the final nail in the coffin. Aster is a master of sticking the landing. 3 for 3! Still, I was overwhelmed so I can only give it a 9/10. K thanks!
Late to this video, but I had to mention that this movie is actually based on one of Ari Aster's short films (the short is entitled "Beau" and Beau is portrayed by the actor who played the father in "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons"!!!!).
I thought it was really well done. That being said if I wanna watch Joaquin Phoenix sob for a few hours I’d prefer to watch Her💀😭 Ari likes to torture his characters a bit too much and I didn’t enjoy watching this torture porn of this man😭 also it was just way too long
It’s so crazy, when I first saw this film in the theaters I had mixed emotions about it. I had such a more enjoyable experience on the second watch in my living room with a great sound system and felt more immersed in the film and really loved it. I highly suggest anyone who was unsure on the first watch to give it a second chance at home with full sound on the biggest tv possible
Omg the dark background you have for filming this review is……… quite scary as well
I loved this movie and simultaneously hated it.
The sex scene is legendary already just for how hilarious it is and that "climax" literally and figuratively was not expected.
Too long no doubt, but I'm so glad something like this received the funding it did tbh. Means creativity isn't dead in the mainstream
Finally watched it last night. Bizarre is right lol but I enjoyed it and can relate to the anxiety aspect. Loved the forest play scene. Very beautiful. 💕
It was good. As far as AA movies, imo, I’d say Hereditary >> Beau >>>> Midsommar
I want to talk about elements of this film but in the comment section of a spoiler free review probably isn’t the place. Spookyastronauts please do a full discussion/ review of this movie for RUclips
If Sorry To Bother you was a horror movie mixed with The Baby of Macon and a Salvador Dali painting that's this movie
I ended up turning this movie off after an hour. It was just too much for me; living with a real life anxiety disorder.
Evil dead rise trailer has made me hype
Synecdoche, New York is a movie anyone who loved Beau Is Afraid should watch
I loved this movie too. It won't be for everyone. I saw people walk out on it. You either will like this movie or thought you wasted your time and money. There is no middle ground. Which is the sign of great cinema.
I love weird ass movies. I love Ari Aster movies. I think this movie was awful and was clearly trying so hard to be extra weird, and it failed imo.
I’ve heard about the….surprise at the end and my asexual ass could never. But hope everyone else likes it!
I'm asexual too!
Why are more horror movies aimed at causing negative mental issues like anxiety or trauma/ptsd. My disorder is not horror. It’s hell
I love Ari Aster, but I really hated the second half of the film Beau is afraid, it was boring.
I love Todd Solondz! Recently rewatched Happiness. Still love it. Once on twtter I said Ari Aster was the Todd Solondz of horror. This makes me even more excited!
Have you read the original script for beau? Its quite different from the movie. Ari rewrote it after midsommar. The grace/roger scenes, forest, and ending are changed and the original script is actually more humorous in my opinion. I kinda see it like it has aspects of hereditary and midsommar in one script. You can find it online pretty easily. I highly suggest it if you wanna get more of a perspective ari’s vision for this world. I think if the movie was a bit shorter and was this script it wouldve done better.
I work in the neighborhood where the first act was filmed and yeah, it's chaos there. Not too different from the movie!
Happy Thursday 💋🩷👼🏻🌻
Aster definitely considers Midsommar to be at least somewhat of a comedy.
“It’s folk horror, but it’s being given to you with the trajectory of a high-school comedy.”
He's also stated that he found it amusing that during screenings half the theater would laugh while the other half was trying to figure out what was wrong with the people who were laughing.
I think you sold me. I'm checking it out. Good reviews
ohhh THIS is no NOT a HORROR FILM. PLS just don't!
You should wear black in your car more often, your head and hands natural effect in this vid is a vibe. I almost thought you edited it that way.. great breakdown, can’t wait to see the movie.
The way your face is lit in your car reminds me of scream. If that wasn't intentional, it looks cool lol
I just came from the cinema. I just know this one is gonna f with me for a while in the best way!
I keep returning to "Kafkaesque" as a descriptor for this film.
What was the slow part to you? The play? When he’s with the family?
My best friend and I went into this a little too blind and didn't realize it was 3 hours long 😮
Loved this movie. Joanquin is the best actor ever ❤
3 hours? A movie really has to be good to support that length.
Based on your review, I am going to see this movie, but I have to see it in the theater, so I will not be tempted to be distracted by phones etc.
Thank you for the video.
I thought Hereditary was really good. Midsomar was just meh. So maybe this is somewhere in the middle?
Honestly it’s not as intense as either so I’m not sure if you’ll like it at all. Hope you do though!
@@spookyastronauts going this weekend! I hope it's good.
@@spookyastronauts just saw it. Well your analysis is spot on. It's not for everybody. Wasn't for me, though I appreciate what he was trying to do and say. Glad other people are enjoying it.
You may like Tom Perrota if you like Solondz
No one is going to mention that she suddenly turned into a floating head with hands.😭
Saludos desde Acapulco México
I am just glad some one knows Palindromes
"Beau is afraid is like Avatar"
- Emma
I love the format you use. Even if I have no desire to see the film, it is a pleasure watching you review movies.
Thank you so much!
I am very excited to see this movie. Great review Emma!
Emma, how intense do you think this film would be if someone watched it on acid?😂
I went and watched this movie today mostly because of this review (and because it's Ari Aster). My goodness, what a ride that was! As someone with GAD, I appreciated the warning that this would raise my anxiety. I chose to go, but was well prepared for that, and very glad I was. I also agree this is not a film for everyone (I've already warned 2 people I know off it despite absolutely LOVING the film). I also wish I had been able to take a picture of the looks on the other movie-goers faces as I was leaving the theater because they looked like they had really *seen* some things - lol. Also, no one wanted to leave despite having sat in the seats for 3 hours - it was like everyone was traumatized!
As soon as you refrenced Todd Solonz I was sold!
I waited to watch your review until after I’d seen it, and I’m truly not the same person I was when I walked in that theater. I’ve been so out of it since seeing the film, and it hasn’t left my brain. I wasn’t really scared while watching, just tense, but now, I’m scared. I’m anxious. I don’t know why that film twisted me in the way it did
I absolutely loved this film
Yaaas vague Queen, gives nothing and everything at the same time 😂😂excited for this one 😊
you had me at palindromes and mother. eeek so excited
Wow, I´m am so excited to see this film when it comes to the cinema in Sweden next week! I don't know what to expect, other than I probably will be surprised. Thanks for a great review. So glad you finally got to see it, Emma! :)
"TEAR DOWN THE WALLS!!!!!!"
Thanks. I'll check it out
This movie leaves me with so many questions that I started and stopped writing this comment about 10 times. Lol! I'm hoping what we were supposed to see with "Beau is Afraid" was what serious extreme anxiety looks like. The movie is always shown from his point of view but what if his mother's (Patti Lupone) viewpoint was more accurate? (Sorry trying not to give spoilers like Spooky astronaut). Beau is Afraid and I'm afraid for him!
I live with extreme anxiety. This movie is so accurate I couldn't watch more than an hour of it.
Today is my birthday and I'm celebrating it with a double feature. I'm about to see Evil Dead Rise and then tonight I will go see Beau is Afraid. I'm very excited!
Happy birthday! Haven't seen Beau is Afraid yet but pretty sure these two will make a good double feature
Wow. Fuck yeah & just WOW!
Wasn’t sure about this film but now I’m sold.
Thank you for spoiler free reviews
Stay open! It’s probably not what you’re expecting at all . I hope you like it
Saw it earlier today. I looked at my watch at 25 minutes in; and at two hours I groaned that I had to sit thru another hour. I was not impressed with the character of Beau. I thought he was a bore and relatively empty. I liked the surrealist, abstract and psychedelic aspects, but those things do not make a good picture as a whole. The ending was was abysmal. For me, of course.
Yeah I can understand that it really isn’t for everyone
I’m noticing a disturbing trend 2022-2023 that more movies, like this and Skinnamarink and smile, they are literally trying to make mental illnesses into movies. I’m all for representation but it makes someone like me, dx multiple mental illnesses, can’t watch it without being triggered. And I want to watch horror but trauma isn’t horror when you’ve experienced it. At least there was a new terrified. I do love my gore
I hear you. I have a severe anxiety disorder, and some depression. I couldn't make it more than an hour into this movie.
Chloe absolutely hated this movie, like leaving the film, her face was the picture of despair. I really enjoyed it but I have no idea what I just watched 😂
Yeah I know dean would too!
The main reason I watch your reviews is to watch you wave goodbye to your dog...cute!
I'm so excited to watch this. It won't be in the cinema. Lol. But yes, excited nonetheless. Thanks Em as always for your great spoiler free review!
I hope you love it!
Palindromes is my favourite solondz film too. I definitely connected with this movie [Beau is Afraid] on the same level you did here. I loved it so much. Great review as usual. 😎🤟🔥💖
Thank you!
So, it's not like the short?
Fantastic review! I personally loved this film and how ambitious Aster went with it. Phoenix was so amazing as was the supporting cast, and a lot more disturbing than I planned. It was like a PT Anderson epic mixed with his Hereditary
I really liked this movie. It's something very unique among a rather standard catalog that current mainstream cinema offers. Fresh and disturbing. And yet, I can perfectly understand that there are people who hate it completely. My personal advice is to watch it, the worst that can happen is that you lose 3 hours, the best would be a unique experience, with emotions that are hard to find elsewhere.
I’m glad you seemed to love it as much as I did. That said - any spoiler free discussion of this film isn’t really going to be a good discussion of the film, since it’s so dense with layers of nonstop content from beginning to end… I really would love to hear an ACTUAL discussion of the film. Sadly I guess I’ll have to wait bc people don’t like “spoilers.”
Do you like spoilers?
