David Lynch is similar in that he hates talking about his own movies, but slightly differently in that it's not because of a nervousness about speaking the wrong words or giving the wrong impression, but more about being confident in that the work will speak for itself and there's nothing more to say. I think it's a super interesting approach and I'm surprised more directors aren't that way.

    • @HauntedHippie
      @HauntedHippie  Год назад +10

I think because most directors like being involved in the conversation! I think the work can speak for itself and the director can have an opinion about it. I guess I don’t see those things as mutually exclusive

Calling Beau a one note character makes sense. At the same time, playing a one note character by design (and I’d say it’s by design) makes Phoenix’s performance more incredible to me. Beau is one note in my opinion because he’s shackled (reference) by his relationship with his mother. He doesn’t really know how to be outside of the relationship with his mother.

I think that you're right about an average audience struggling to grasp this movie. It's definitely quite heavy and out there. Although, I think there is more to it than just mommy issues and anxiety. Although those were prevalent in the film, I think what it was really going for, was expressing how humans treat others. On a grander scale, I interpret the movie as an exploration of humans handling trauma. For example (SPOILERS), Beau is treated like a monster when Tony drinks paint in front of him. Instantly, Tony's mother chooses to blame Beau and treat him terribly, as if it's his fault that she drank it. Don't get me wrong, he definitely could have, and should have stopped her, but I also think it's important to consider that an anxiety ridden person like him is not going to find it easy to react to a situation like that. I mean we even see a scene earlier in the movie when Beau is taking a bath while a guy who partied in his house the night before starts to slip, and eventually falls, on top of Beau. However, even though he had plenty of time to move, Beau simply freezes up in fear, just like what he did when Tony drank the paint. This is probably my main critique of your video. I don't think it's fair to consider Beau an anti-hero, he's just the catalyst for expressing this theme throughout the movie. Even when he chokes his mom at the end of the movie, it is somewhat glossed over in the trial afterwards, and while this may be a bit of a stretch, I think what this is trying to represent is that Beau is blamed for things that aren't even in his control. He does this, not because he wants to kill her, but because people think of him as someone who would want to do something horrible like that. That's also why he instantly apologizes to her once he realizes what's going on. I think that what Ari Aster tried to show us in this movie, is that Beau truly is just an innocent person who suffers due to his family's generational trauma and his upbringing. Beau is not meant to be a significantly deep protagonist, he isn't meant to have an arc, cause in the end, the thing that makes him interesting is the way the people around him treat him for acting like "a man-child". They constantly treat him like he is using this as an act to have pity from the people around him, when in actuality, he has simply been through so much in this movie that he has been brought to an almost childish state of fear and suffering. He constantly apologizes for small things that people think he does out of a place of intention. They constantly want him to be brought down to a level where he is just as bad as the people he's abused by. They can't seem to fathom that someone could be a decent person after what Beau has gone through. I mean, I don't know if this movie said anything insanely profound, as in the end, all it really did is point the finger at the audience, but I do think that what it was trying to say was meaningful in a deep and complex way. This movie has its issues and is insanely weird, but I think it did do a good job at what it was going for, even if a general audience may not be able to see that. I mean I had to write a fricken essay just to express my thoughts on it, so I think it's understandable that most people aren't really going to be able to enjoy this movie as entertainment without really observing it on a deeper level. Anyway that was really long lol, hopefully you got something out of it. I just wanted to express the way I viewed it, even if I may be completely wrong about it. Nice video, I am glad that I am able to get different people's perspectives on this movie so soon after it's release.

You were right. That was a big aspect of it. Also *spoiler* the daughter (forget her name) cussed him out and forces him to smoke weed and threaten to lie about him if he doesn’t. He smokes the weed just to not get lied about by her, but she does that, and he gets blamed for it by the mom anyway.
It really depicts the helpless feeling of trauma. Constantly feeling like you will be blamed no matter what you do.

I’m very inbetween on this film. The best way to describe it is you take a whole bunch of random ingredients to top on a pizza. All the ingredients are great on their own, but together on a pizza, the flavors just don’t turn out right. Further more, you leave the pizza in the oven an hour over and the crust ends up being too crisp and burnt to be palatable. Yet, the pizza still looks good enough to post on Instagram.

The movie got them layers into it, you can swim in the surface, you can swim in the middle, or you can deep dive into the bottom, it just depends on how u interpret the movie. The movie gave different experience to each people, if Ari explained his visions on the movie it will destroy people ability to interpret (so that the Ari's visions are the actual meanings of the movie). Let it loose, so people can interpret wildly, just like quentin tarantino's suitcase in pulp fiction. I mean it's fine to hate/dislike the movie, i loved to listen to your voice about the movie regardless. And i think the movie didn't want u to fleshed out the overall theme as quick as possible, it's about you stepping in beau's mind/feet on the journey, and the overall theme wasn't really the point of the whole movie really. I think you really thinking too much thematically about the movie. Ari once said, he just made this film starting from the world building first, and the comedic parts. Of course overall theme will be a mess to decipher.

  • @Krypto_Dogg
    @Krypto_Dogg Год назад +1

The movie’s biggest theme, if you can call it that, to me is victim blaming. Even the director sounds like this is his pov calling Beau a loser. The weirdest thing is the writer/director doesn’t seem to understand his own movie nor seem like the kind of guy that would write it.
I agree with you fully that the only sane way to interpret the film is that Beau is the only sane person in the movie, but was tricked from a young age into thinking he was the crazy one, even thinking he would die from sex because of misinformation. Everything he’s been taught is a lie and his real world can only come off as surreal to the audience. You think the world has to be the invention of a schizophrenic, but instead you realize it was a creation of his mother.
In context to what I’ve already said, Beau’s father being what it is is generally dismissive of fatherhood and motherhood. You thought your father mattered, but he was just some random guy your mother got pregnant by. She was never in a relationship with him. No love. Maybe in some way it’s meant to reflect why his mother never knew how to respect his manhood and only viewed him through the lens of a mother to son, even controlling the first girl he ever kissed. But as mentioned, before she’d arranged for his first kiss, she’d already told him repeatedly the story of how his father and his father before him died while losing their virginity. Then she has the girl tell him to wait for her and he does his whole life. To top it off, she dies while he loses his virginity in his mother’s bed. Instead of being happy for him, his mother reveals she’s not dead at that moment and chastises him. All she’s ever done was traumatize him, but even the director calls him a loser. How bizarre is that?

    i loved this video sm!!
as a horror creator that receives a LOT of negative backlash and hate, i can absolutely side with Ari about the whole “ignoring reviews/feedback” kind of thing. while i do agree with you that constructive criticism is absolutely crucial, that reception is usually given in the early stages and can form very positive habits and shape a creator/director/whatever.
however, once i got my footing and was confident with what i was making, the negative feedback was getting SO detrimental for me that even one hate comment would depress me for days and make me not want to work. in my opinion, if you have an audience of people that like what you do, then you’re doing something right. the negativity will always be there however, and i think that should be closed off entirely because it WILL effect your work if it gets to your head enough.
sorry if i sound like super pretentious or anything (i promise i’m not lol) i just figured i would give some input from someone who is in a kinda similar position as Ari (in a much less popular way, lol)
again i loved the video and will be subbing!!!

Gosh. I rolled my eyes so hard after this whole "I don't want to talk about it and I'm here bc they funded my work" bs. Be thankful that a studio believed in your art enough to fund it. The least you can do is pretend to like press. Get over yourself. Also, if people want to know what it's really like to work with a director ask the crew, not the cast. The cast is often treated way differently specially when they're big famous actors. Like this one big production designer I know who likes to say she paved the way for women in her department but behind the scenes she was a huge bully and hated most women.

[Spoiler warning] When the film ended I wasn't particularly pleased, but at least kept me thinking. I liked how this film materialized some minf*ck worst case scenarios that people with obsessive thoughts, anxiety and paranoia may experience, all together looked like a nightmare where there's some sort of continuity for a goal but zero sense and an uncomfortable feeling all along. By the end I was hoping a proper closure for Beau but, they played the "mother is guilty for everythig" card and felt cliched while it stripped Beau from any growth so the course of the trial scene seemed inevitable. I wouldn't say I merrily enjoyed this film but I found it interesting. Don't know if I prefer it over Midsommar but definitely not over Hereditary which is Aster's best film to me.

I loved this movie. This movie is really hard to like articulate thoughts about and I couldn't imagine talking about it, but you articulated your thoughts well so it was fun to kind of revisit my own experience through watching your video. I feel like your experience matched mine...but I thought it was a good experience. But the difference I guess is that I really liked Beau, maybe because I related to him more, and so I laughed when you said he was a bad, unlikeable person haha.

Hey Kylie, I knew when I heard you were going to review this movie that you were walking into Ari Aster's complicated relationship with horror to put it mildly. Same thing happened to me after I watched Hereditary (the Blu Ray was a Christmas present that I asked for) and I watched some of his interviews. Although, in some of them he didn't mind if it was considered horror (which they are) and other times he was much more conflicted to say the least. And just because something is a family drama doesn't mean it can't also be horror. Tons of classic horror movies are infact family dramas too. Amityville Horror, The Ring, The Exorcist, The Omen, TCM! haha I could go on. I think Ari Aster loves playing in dark subject matter but he ultimately doesn't like the horror label because he thinks it's beneath him. I also think he can't help going so dark which is ironically perfect for horror! Haha
You really knocked this review out of the park Kylie. I like weird crazy movies so this movie may end up working for me. I am even more intrigued because of your awesome review. Ultimately we will see. And I like your necklace. I have some little animal figurines very similar to your necklace!

hereditary is definitely a horror movie, he's said so. He regrets the quote saying that it's more of a family drama or something. If anything it's a family drama that curdles over into something much much worse. He really likes the horror genre and the label is actually really useful because he was able to use conventions to make a compelling story and play with conventions in a way that made the movie more interesting and compelling. Like there's a certain kind of person that really likes horror, and the genre and its conventions got him to know the audience better, which made the surprises and breaking of the conventions much more interesting. The last thing he would say is that the horror label is "beneath him", just that sometimes it doesn't quite fit what he's doing. And I think really personal movies that are more true to life than just trying to be a good story tend to kind of bend what exactly genre it's in, which is fine. Good movies are good movies.

There definitely are many artists that don't provide commentary on their films and would rather let the audience take their own experience from it. And I would say this film relates to those which is probably why Ari has held back a lot.
David Lynch is notoriously tight-lipped but did compromise a bit with Mulholland Drive by handing out a series of questions that, if answered while watching, would help you to understand the core structure of the film. Like Beau, it appears to be disjointed and non-sensical, however it is actually a simple and logical story that acts as a type of "cinematic puzzle". It's definitely a good film to try out for someone interested in these films to see what is possible in the artform.
Although many seem to be confused by what Beau is Afraid is, there are quite a lot of similar films that it is definitely based on (Eraserhead, Persona, Naked Lunch, Brazil, "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover", etc). There already is quite a group of followers that enjoy these types of films (And Ari is well known to be one of them), and this film is a fantastic addition to that sparse lineup of films. Definitely not for everyone, but I do not think that it is the jumbled mess many are making it out to be.
I'd say a second viewing would probably be a lot better. I found a lot of the film that didn't work the first time, worked very well the second time. The 4 act structure seemed to confuse people a lot so it's an easier watch once you know what to expect. But also it seems like most people just don't want to watch this type of film and that's also fine.

    *mild spoilers*
From a metaphorical perspective, I really got what Ari was going for. Not so much the big metaphor of mummy issues, even though I understood it. But just to really encapsulate what it is like to have crippling anxiety. From the extremely irrational like passing by crazy people in the street and potentially getting shot at to the mundane like your credit card declining on the machine when you’re in a rush, being peer pressured into smoking an unknown drug, and spending a couple of days with strangers, especially when one of them is a young girl.
I don’t know if I was laughing over how over the top it is or in recognition with the fact that I’ve had these crazy fears. There was a scene where a cop threatens to shoot Beau after confusing a little ornament with a weapon that goes on for way too long and feels like it’s stripped right out of a Rick and Morty episode. It’s one of my favourite scenes.

5/5 stars. My review is Parker Posey Posing. I LOVE her and was just excited to see she had a cameo. I loved seeing so many random people cast in the film. No notes. After seeing his student films I became deeply disturbed for his childhood but apparently it was normal. I really loved how thematically Beau builds off his previous work. There were certainly choices that were made in this film. There was a section of my theater who was cackling at all the right spots. It certainly was a movie.
I'd also say I generally agree with not liking horror so much. Like the Saw sequels, The Conjuring franchise, possibly The Terrifier? Paranormal activity. Horror movies that exist purely for jump scares and grotesque imagery aren't for me. But Pan's Labyrinth. Hill House, The Shining. Candyman. The point of horror movies I prefer isn't the horror aspect it's the drama or the story that's being told through horror. I consider Pan's Labyrinth to be a beautiful children's story that I would've loved as a child that I find strange to be classified as a horror movie but also recognize it certainly is.

Not relating to this movie specifically, but still noteable; I actually kind of respect the fact that Ari doesn't care much for the horror genre (at lest as we know it). been looking forward to this!!!
4/22 intro lmaooo that edible preview got me good
had no idea aster doesn’t really respect horror, what a bummer!!
david lynch is very cagey about meaning as well, some artists subscribe to the Roland Barthes mentality that the author is dead and the work speaks for itself.
while I believe that is a great technique for analysis I personally also love to hear the details and creative opinions!!!
I love the idea that the director doesn’t know all, the actors have their own interpretations and meanings as do the editor/many many artists involved. everyone’s got their own lil take, I love when directors give credit to their crew and actors.
based on the combo of AA’s personality and the topic of Beau, I feel like it makes sense that he’s extra nervous in interviews haha.
I’d say they’re reserved about giving interviews hahah.
I get it, let the art speak for itself. But the press is like also an essential part of the process that can define your film’s financial success and allow you to make another, so even though as an artist I relate to their mentality, I recognize it’s kinda immature.
it’s not so absurd to promote a product that people spent millions of dollars on, esp if that product is a deep artistic reflection of yourself.
they seem like cool people to work with! as long as you can get on their wavelength.
lol I love how so many horror directors come from deceptively wholesome backgrounds
Ari being a nervous wreck honestly is so reassuring haha
gotta love that inimitable Jewish neurosis
“Oh it’s hittin” lmaoo funnier the second time
I love Joaquin Phoenix. he was amazing in Inherent Vice. so deep and also hilarious.
that pin thing is wild!! commitment!!!
very wild methods!! that scream thing is interesting. gonna have to peep the podcast after I watch the flick.
Hereditary could’ve been another 5 mil just to promote.
Really interesting that A24 went for such an ambitious project! what a budget! I hope they make it back haha
yeah I feel like there is a great balance of listening to fans and doing your thing.
Ari aster seems to be a bit of a jd Salinger vibe writer-wise.
the praise from Scorsese was wild!! surreal. he has seen a lot of movies though haha
I love me some bizarre stuff so I am honestly looking forward to Beau!
The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the length.
I’ll be back for spoilers after I watch it! seeing it tn.
love the way you stated your gripes with the style, I love a complex flick so I think I’ll be into it but I think you described that aspect really well!!! most people don’t love abstract/interpretive films.
    I love em hahah
But will I love this movie??? tbd.
honestly there is a strong Jewish vibe to your description of this anxiety, many of us Jews suffer from anxiety and history shows paranoia isn’t always an overreaction, definitely something that seems relevant.
ok, I’ll be back post watch.

got a big ol review on letterboxd but came back post-watch for spoilers!
I do agree, it’s overstuffed. 3 hours is too long. and Beau is like a super loser hahah. but there’s something about joaquin phoenix I find really endearing that got me through. and I loved the absurd tone and world. especially early on.
I heard a few laughs in the theater, but let’s be real Ari can’t help but make horror apparently.
hopefully he’ll come around to the genre lol.
if it was shorter and a lil funnier I’d really love it. it gets a bit lost in the sauce.
loved the animated sequence but twas maybe too long for the pacing.
even though it fell apart in the end, I still enjoyed the commitment to the absurdity enough to appreciate the whole thing.
as far as an alternate take: I think the whole thing might be Beau’s death trip: his life flashing before his eyes- it starts with his birth and ends with his life trial where he implodes from guilt.
it’s also a cautionary tale, if you let fear rule your life you won’t live it. learn to make your own decisions.
and aster splits the difference on sex in horror movies: someone dies, and someone has a giant peepee monster protect them from their would-be assailant. this is very powerful stuff. elevated comedy. lol.
I kinda had a feeling he would never get to his mom’s house haha, I thought it would be more about him figuring out their relationship on the way there.
saw evil dead rise right before and gave them both 4 stars but for like very different reasons.
      evil dead rise kinda rips.
but I will probably be thinking about Beau more often.

This is an odd, misguided take. If you didn't like the movie, fine, I get that three hours of feel-bad absurdism and surrealism is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I certainly don't think Aster's intention was to set out to make a bad movie. If you watch any interview with him, you'll see he's someone who takes filmmaking very seriously - watch his recent visit to the Criterion Closet if you don't believe me. It's clear from this film that he set out to make something very personal and unique to him - I think that's what he intended to do as an artist. Lastly, A24 knew the material they were giving money to before they gave it to him, so it's clear somebody there believed in his vision enough to finance it.
