  • The Movie Apprentice continues to go through his highlights of London Film Festival 2023, with a French Canadian film that places us the viewer directly into the shoes of a serial killer groupie. In this chilling thriller, we see the face of evil in a unique way, executed through a chilling score and creative camerawork. Here is my full review of Red Rooms aka Les Chambres Rouges

"That's what I love, seeing them lose everything." Kelly Anne was playing poker with Chevalier, Camille's family, Clementine and the authorities. Chevalier lost his claim to innocence, Camille's family was devastated by seeing the truth of their daughter's murder, the authorities looked inept by being gift wrapped hard evidence by a stranger, Clementine lost her belief in Chevalier's innocence. Even Kelly Anne lost her modeling career which was her real life version of going full tilt at the poker table when she cosplayed as Camille in the courtroom. Ultimately Kelly Anne won her jackpot by accomplishing her goal of everyone involved in her game losing everything, actually winning the Camille video and the added bonus of taking the selfie in Camille's bedroom. The game started with seeking out and buying access to real Red Rooms then turned into obsession once Chevalier was exposed and arrested. Kelly Anne felt personally attached to the case since she was there in essence from the beginning. A great film whose heart of darkness centered around a truly morally ambiguous central character in the beautiful, enigmatic Kelly Anne.

A very good movie review. I really appreciate the atmosphere of the movie that let you think the worst. At a certain moment, dont want to do any spoilers, but i really thought this will turn in a very disturbing way. Job well done by the director. As a French Canadian, i am always happy to see movie from my place to get good reviews. I am hitting the Subscribe Button, let see what else you got.

I really enjoyed the film and what it didn’t show, left such horrible images in my mind I found it more disturbing than any outright torture porn movie to date. I’m going to be haunted by this for a while. I can understand your gripe with the open end but I like the ambiguity because on one hand, it seemed perhaps she did all of these outrageous things to help catch the real killer…or did she? Who she is and her motives not being 100% clear, I personally prefer because it leaves me thinking more and more about each action and what maybe that meant. Perhaps it is a mixture of both.

Think it was more of just how abrupt it ended with her motives being unclear, but as you said it could be both, and overall it didn't ruin the movie over all. Glad you enjoyed the movie, fully agree on the disturbing aspect of it

Your review here is spot on, but after considering your exchanges here, I'm thinking: it's clear she sought these videos out ?because something about their violence excited her (some sort of death fantasy? Brrr) -- AND YET. In the end, she did the right thing by making sure authorities would get that third video. Whether that had been her intent from the start, or she made the decision because of her impressions of the mother & that brief friendship (err, forgot the name, too many tabs open, you know what I mean) -- that's something I'll wonder about.
I'm surprised that people have been so shocked by it, which sounds like a put-down when it isn't. The review I heard compared it to Martyrs without the gore, which I still don't understand, but okay then. I am profoundly grateful for the director's discretion -- gore would have diminished the real horror here.
I hope we see much more from this director -- cinematography, score, acting -- absolutely fantastic. @@TheMovieApprentice

In hindsight I do believe that maybe the reaction the fanatical friend had to the video and the time spent with her might have swayed her to do the right thing, it's definitely something I need to rewatch when I can

Spoiler alert. You mentioned that scene in the courtroom as one of the most chilling you'd seen in a while, and it was. But even creepier for me was the scene where she breaks into the mother's house and takes a picture of herself in the dead girl's room, all the while dressed like the dead girl and smiling for the camera. Whatever her ultimate motives might have been, she was an extremely disturbed (and possibly insane) character.

@@TheMovieApprentice I really think that was the point. It was unclear but to me more like in the way there were a couple of possibilities and your worldview affected which one you went with. I certainly didn't get the feeling that I had no idea at all. There were plenty of bread crumbs.

I disagree. All the clues are there to reach a conclusion but what conclusion you reach may depend on your world view. It challenges you to think a bit and I like that.

The ending was a little weird but I think Kelly Anne wanted closure for the girls family that there was no video found for so she went on the dark web and found it. I was completely surprised when she went into the court room and started changing to look like one of the girls to get a response from the accused guy. Kind of a slow burn type movie but not bad overall.
