What it Means to be Charismatic

  • Sometimes we forget what it means to be a charismatic Catholic. It doesn’t mean we go to praise and worship rallies and listen to all of the most popular Catholic speakers (although these are not bad things). Jackie clarifies that being a charismatic Catholic simply means embracing the charisms (or gifts) of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives gifts of faith, teaching, healing, wisdom, prophecy, the gift of tongues, and discernment of spirits, among others.
    All of them are given to us to build up the Body of Christ in some way. These charisms need to be tested though, because the devil tries to deceive us into thinking his traps are God’s gifts.
    The best way to test a possible gift of the Holy Spirit is by using prayer, Scripture, and the guidance of the Church. Read the Acts of the Apostles and the lives of the saints to see many of the charisms of the Holy Spirit in action. Jackie also encourages you to pray, asking God to tell you what your charism is if you do not know already. We all have a charism by virtue of our baptism.
    Here is where you can read about the charisms of the Holy Spirit in the Catechism and Scripture:
    Catechism:
    “Whether extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men, and to the needs of the world.
    Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all members of the Church as well” (CCC 799-800).
    Scripture:
    “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

    Not Catholic, but have a lot of love for my Catholic brothers and sisters. I had a major conversion. Went from being an agnostic atheist to having a wonderful gift of faith. So many people, even Christians that have believed for so long, that doubt heavily. I never have. I didn’t know why. I realized that it was a gift of the Holy Spirit later on. God bless!

      Ehhh, Charismatic Catholicism is basically like the Pentecostal faith, with a few differences. My mom's family was involved in this. Most converted to Evangelical Christianity.

      @Collins Anosike My grandmother traded her rosary beads for a King James Bible long before I was born. She influenced my mother into sending me to a Pentecostal bible school in the summer. Luckily I was sent to private schools affiliated with the Episcopal church, during the school year, and not educated by those ignorant bible thumpers I encountered at the Assemblies of God school.

    • @WallStwizkid
      @WallStwizkid 4 года назад

      @Collins Anosike Actually it is utterly unorthodox for Catholics to organize themselves in Bible groups and study the Bible. The whole thing about "biblical Christianity" is that it is contrasting itself with Catholicism, as the latter is hierarchical, and tends to leave biblical interpretations up to the Vatican. It was a small leap for my grandmother to go from Charismatic Christian to Pentecostal.

    The title of this video struck me because in the Caribbean, we are known as Charismatic Catholics. I wish that all Catholics can be charismatic. Our worship is very different from the US and many other countries as well. We sing praise and worship (singing mostly Protestant and Hillsongs) at the beginning of Mass, then we have the traditional liturgical songs during Mass. we sing a meditation (a hillsong) and praise and worship at the end of Mass. In addition, in Trinidad, it was noted that Catholics don't know how to lives their with the Holy Spirit. They were just baptised and that was the end of it. So, we have something called the Life in the Spirit seminar which was implemented to renew ourselves in the Holy Spirit and to teach us how to invoke the Holy Spirit through song and prayer. During the seminar, there are lectures from priests, getting into groups to have discussions, counselling, confession and then on the final day we have the pouring of Holy Spirit. They lay hands on individuals, speaking in tongues until the person themselves begin to speak in tongues. It's a very a powerful experience and it's a pity that not many parishes implement these seminars for Catholics. Our priest encourages us to speak in tongues to drive away satan. When we speak in tongues, it is the language of God and the devil can't understand a word of it.

    Interesting point worthy of note is that just because you have a gift of the Spirit in one instance does not mean God will always use that gift through you in every situation. For example: This woman obviously has a gift of teaching that we see her use whenever she posts a video. However, she talked about having a word of knowledge for that girl, but that doesn't mean she will have a word of knowledge for every girl she meets. So, if God does something through you that you know is from Him and it doesn't happen again don't think you have messed up so He will not use you anymore, just continue to serve Him and He will work through you. This works on the other side of the coin too. So, if you sense the Holy Spirit leading you to do something that is not a spiritual gifts you know you have follow His lead and perhaps He will use you in a new way. :) God wants us to be willing servants ready to jump at His will to His glory and the benefit of the Church. Live with this mindset and God will use you.

      VitNewGen so testing the spirit is making sure the voices you hear is from the Holy Spirit. But when you are living in holiness and virtue, you are able to know when something comes from the Holy Spirit. If you keep praying for protection, st Michael prayer, etc. You don’t even need to test it because you know. But where we have to be careful is what others tell us. Someone can tell us they have a word but that might not come from God

    • @enriquearandalopez3476
      @enriquearandalopez3476 4 года назад +1

      Jordan Louise I think the same as you. But I do think we have also to test our thoughts even if they didn’t came from others. Evil can influence on us as well as on others, although being in grace and going to confession, receiving the Eucharist, praying the rosary and doing oration, etc, for sure makes one being closer to God and easier to listen to his words :)
      God bless you all brothers and sisters!

      Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world.

    I grew up in a charismatic community, and I greatly question “praying in tongues”, and i certainly don’t think that St. Paul wrote about “praying in tongues”. In fact, he spoke fairly strongly against overusing a valid gift of tongues if there is no interpreter.

    • @sttommore
      @sttommore 4 года назад

      "Praying in tongues" is less from that particular place. It's more akin to Romans 8:26, if I gather your subtext correctly. The gift of tongues, is, as you say, very different and does demand the presence of the gift of interpretation. Even so, I have seen even what you might call gibberish interpreted. These things happen, and yes, it's rare by percentage, and yes, one must be careful if pursuing such things. Those gifts are always only received.

So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said. For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.”

    I am not a Catholic and in all honesty I don't appreciate having a denominational name because I just love the Lord God with all my heart I love the word of God spoken and in Scripture I speak with unknown tongues often throughout my day everyday when I'm not around anybody, just talking praying and singing unto the Lord and it builds me up and edifies my spirit I have on many occasions encountered awesome manifestations of our supernatural God and I love to hear about others and their encounters with the Lord..
    I have often wondered about charismatic Catholics and if it was the same as the Pentecostals or full Gospel speaking in tongues and it sounds like it is the same and that's great because there is only one God and he is so very very awesome..
    When Amy Coney Barrett was being nominated as a supreme Court judge I noticed a quickening in my spirit that I could not deny and I was intrigued by this because I knew nothing of her yet the spirit inside of me seem to be excited about her even more than the president Trump himself and I thought that's interesting I wonder what that's all about well I believe it has everything the bloodshed of the innocent form of abortion that curse being removed from America
    I also want to say that I know times look perilous right now and what we are seeing in the world is quite ugly in all aspects but something in my spirit says otherwise..
    I believe that we are somehow being blessed with revelation and the enemy within the United States is being exposed and showing himself and hopefully it won't be long but at some point I believe things will turn around drastically and what the devil meant to harm us will be turned around and we will bring back in our economy so hard we will overshoot the mark and this nation will be better and more prosperous than it has ever been ever and this will happen sooner than you think

I don't think I'd want to spend "eternity" with someone who's "relationship" with me up to that point was to f- with my mind about their very existence and yet require that I believe it. Yes as Brian said, there is a difference between Praying in tongues and Prophesying in tongues. With prophesy you need someone with the gift of interpretation as it is a message for those gathered (the Church, but the microcosm of the Church that is those there praying/listening rather than the entire Catholic Church as a whole).
      For praying in tongues you don't need an interpreter, yet it would be better that someone(s) with discernment also be present so that they can discern whether the person has good or bad intentions. There ARE such things as demonic tongues, and you DO NOT want someone speaking or "praying" with a demonic tongue in the presence of anyone, let alone those who are spiritually sensitive.

    I think part of what drew me into Catholicism was how well reasoned it is. So many other denominations leave it to "the spirit" but do not divide the spirits, or if they do, they can't explain exactly how they do that, and if they can explain how they divide the spirits, they can't explain why. Catholicism does one better, and in many cases the Church provides several possible conclusions and their reasonings.
    The one problem I run into, is that I'll look for a quick answer to a question I have about a certain reflection and end up with a dissertation on prudence. lol.
