Ok John, since I've recorded all your videos and some others from RUclips when I work on my Spyder, I have a laptop computer in my shop and simply watch the videos while I'm doing routine maintenance. If I miss something, I'll repeat it and watch again. This process has saved my butt more than a few times. Thanks again for all your great videos
Hello John...the SmoaksVlog has a great video on how to change the rear break pad...very informative and helpful as it relates to the parking break etc...take care!
I am new to the Spyder world and am so appreciative of your videos. Truly enjoy watching them. They are so precise, detailed and easy to follow. I enjoy tinkering ( if I can ) to save money. I am always eager to learn ahead of time before something actually happens. Great learning experience. Thanks again, and yes I have subscribed!
Thanks John my car has the same pain with brake pads. A friend of mine has bought the kit that has the proper size key to thread those calibers back in. I guess the manufacture likes to do this so the dealers get to make service money off of us. Hope your spring comes early. God Bless.
Great video. Good job on the brake job. I also agree about the bike ride. It's a great "wind in your face" excercise. - sometimes with bolts that have had loc tite applied, you can apply a little heat, and torque off slowly.. Front brakes on these is simple after seeing your video..
OTC makes a tool for the caliper that you could probably rent from auto zone or a store like that. Same as a car. Push in hard and turn in clock wise if the piston is facing you. Don't forget the brake fluid. Two years is about all you get. Ride Safe!
Just watched a smokes vlog on the brake pads,Shawn uses needle nose pliers to turn the piston and push it backwards, from memory it was anti clockwise.
Great video, hope you get that rear caliper compressed correctly when the time comes to change the rear pads. I have always done breaks on my and my family’s cars for years. I have almost always changed the rotors. Looks like the Ones they use on the Spyder are higher quality. Brembo’s can be very costly to replace. Pads and rotors on the Hyundai Brembo equipped Genesis coupe were about $2900 bucks!!! I use to work at a Hyundai/Genesis dealer. Love the Genesis coupe, however I wouldn’t purchase one with the Brembos due to that fact. I wouldn’t be running it on the track so the factory set up would be fine for street use.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog John, I could not find it either, I made an inquiry, hopefully I can get a response and let you know which number. By the way, I and Miss MIllie demoed a 2020 RTL today, it was fantastic, I want one, just don't know if I can afford it. I cannot believe how smooth it was.
Good Morning John, here's what i got from Shawn, toward the middle of the vlog I think. Aligning a Fan’s Spyder!! • Stunning F3-LTD Ride! | TheSmoaks Vlog_1557
I've been a can am technician for over 12 years, before the first spyder ever rolled off the line, rear pads are extremely important due to the way the electronic parking works. If your rear pads get to low it will cause the parking brake pulley to jump out of time, braking the parking brake sensor among other things..
It sounds like the rear brake change exceeds my skill set,,, Will need a shop visit for rear tier soon, will get the pads replaced at the same time. "A man has got to know his limitations"
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog it's not as bad as it sounds it's just when the rear pads get to low and you have the electronic push button parking brake. Other than that it's not to bad. Also makes sure to have your belt tracking and tension looked at. My biggest advice to anyone who owns a spyder is keep up on maintenance and tire pressure. If you let your tire pressure go to long and it gets to low, your tires will cup throwing off the front end alignment
I've been through the rear brake replacement as well. I actually had a tool from my old bicycle tool collection that worked to retract the caliper piston. By the way, Shawn Smoak's video was from 2/16, on his 'TheSmoaksVlogs' channel. Funny, I also just replaced the battery last weekend. It was still testing fine, but at 5 years old, it's just good preventative maintenance. I've found that batteries never go out when it's convenient - you're always about to go somewhere! Very easy replacement, by the way!
I did the rear pads and it sucks, you have to remember that the E break rotate which if you release the break the pads will go in. Also battery use CAN Am battery
Been looking at the new 2020 RT LTD. Had a few Harleys but too expensive and I don't see the quality. What are your thoughts on the 2020 and are you considering one? How many miles do you have on your Spyder? I live in Michigan so I have some time but getting the bug, love the channel!
Thanks Marley Man, the 2020 appears to be well engineered. And If I was in the market for a Spyder I would consider it. But, as I am the kind of person that gives a lot of consideration before spending money and I tend to keep vehicles as long as I can keep them running and reliable I an not thinking of upgrading. Besides I have a nice 2014, I expect it to serve me for many years. I have 23000 on mine, it had 8900 when I got it in May of 17.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog thanks for the reply, in Michigan a lot of the dealers don't have the 2020s yet but some good deals on leftover 2019s. I really would like to find a few years old one, hate to buy new.
Hello I have a question for you, I have a 2009 can am spyder an its stuck In reverse mode , so i wanted to know if you had any idea what the problem is , and do you know how to fix it!? Any suggesting would be appreciated, thanks
Hi John. Thanks for the video. Have you decided on any choice where you guys will be staying for July 4 on the skyline. Linda and I would love to join you and Miriam. We feel like we are friends already. You have us excited about our own asphalt adventure this Summer. Ray from Ocala Fl.
I need to dig into that project and set the reservations, I am jealous of your upcoming ride. Key west is on my list for sometime. We have a large trip in Aug but not taking the spyder. Hope to see you July 4
Just a tip with the battery trickle charger. Only leave it on for 4 hrs once a month otherwise you can end up cooking it which will shorten the life of the battery. Know a bloke that did this and had a boat battery last 12 years. Check out smokes latest one with the new 2020 spider. He goes over the rear brakes in detail. ruclips.net/video/zRyB-mjUpXs/видео.html Cheers
Sorry to hear you are having issues with the rear brakes. Like others have said Smoke just uploaded a video and I also have one. You turn it clockwise as you apply pressure in word. I have heard people say at first the piston will not go back in just keep pressure on the pistonas you rotate and it will walk in. Good luck
taking that battery out is a bitch. putting the new battery in is even worse. a word from the wise let the dealer take all the plastic off to get at that battery. Very POOOR engineering

Yes, Shawn did a recent video on rear brake pads, s I recall, there were some tricky procedures.

Would you recommend buying a new or used spyder? And why? Thanks!
And that question requires a book on info. In short, new is under warranty but $$$. Use has risk as with anything used but you save money.
Rear brake piston: You have to push hard in and turn clock wise to reset for new pads:)
