John, I have a 2011 RTS manual transmisson Spyder I bought new in 2011 ( same grey colour as yours). I replaced all the pot metal with chrome, added the GPS system the first year I bought it. I have done many long trips on it with no issues, just lots of smiles. I will be heading into my 11 year of ownership and have never regretted buying it for a minute. I have been in a few snowstorms and was so glad I was on a 3 wheeler for sure, the heat grips sure paid for themselves on those cold days up here in northern Alberta Canada. It still runs like a top, maintenance does make a difference for long life of a Spyder. I hope to keep it for years to come. Loved your update on the history of your Spyder. Take care.
I ordered and paid MSRP for my 2020 RTL, and have never regretted it. Used some of my IRA $ to pay for the fun I anticipated. Well worth it. Never regretted the purchase. Miles and miles of fun and great trips. Gotta another two week trip from Texas to North Carolina in May, and looking forward to it with friends. Can Am makes a great touring machine! 👮♂️
Great vid. I love that the tree behind John's head in the driveway intro makes him look like he put his finger in an electric outlet! ;-D Shopping for my Spyder now and this video was a great help! Thanks!
Sure has been worth it for us too. So looking forward to following you guys on your next cross country adventure. Stay well and enjoy life. God Bless, Ray & Linda.
I run the kuhmo rear and federal front tires. I changed them myself and I assure you they will not give you any problems plus they grip so much better. 42k miles on my F3 and she hasn’t seen the stealership since sold in 2016😁
We run Kumho tires on ours as well and haven't had any problems so far. The kenda tires just wear out way too quick for our liking. The Kumho tires have just as much if not more grip and the haven't worn as fast. Sometimes the decision isn't made by the engineer but the penny pushers who get paid to make certain decisions against what the engineer recommends. I believe this is one of those times.
@@blazervol3357 Motorcycle tires are stickier due to the lighter vehicle. Stickier tires wear out faster. Due to the lighter weight of a Spyder, the tires needs to stickier to have better traction. It’s a motorcycle not a car!
@@susierebelryder492 i understand that but Motorcycles need the extra traction because they have a very narrow contact patch where these have a MUCH LARGER contact patch. So traction isn't really an issue and probably +95% of Spyder owners are just casually riding it and not pushing the vehicle's limits. So to pay more for a tire that is just marginally better but will wear out more than twice as fast doesn't make any sense to me unless you are pushing it to its limits.
@@blazervol3357 Spyders weight is around 1300lbs. Cars are 3-4000lbs. The lighter the vehicle, the stickier the tire. Many are finding their car tires don’t do so well in wet conditions. I’ve had a Khumo loose traction in a corner and I almost spun out. Wouldn’t have been fun going over the edge. I’ll stick to what’s made for the ride. I care about myself and others I ride with.
Perfect timing for this video. I’ve been searching for any content to show my wife to help her understand what Spyder ownership is really like. I have been dreaming of the road trips we can do together.
my wife and I enjoy our Can-Am Spyder we have about 21000 miles on it, we are planning our trip to do the dragon tail this year and if everything goes well we would like to try to do Canada this year also. PS. Since I have owned my spider I have changed the water pump in my rear tire on it, this year I am due for air filter and spark plugs.
I want to get a spyder eventually and take trips with my wife like this but the kids are still too young for us to take that much time away. Almost makes me want to fast forward through time to enjoy this kind of life.
Excellent information and delivery. I look forward to your videos like back when I was a kid looking forward to the Saturday Morning cartoons! If you are ever in the Northern Virginia area let's do lunch/dinner. Best wishes on the next adventure!
Great video as usual I love your videos John because you're very informative and educational. I love the way that you will break down the details of the information given. I'm coming up on having my Spyder for one year and I do the little checklist and the maintenance check too. I'm a stickler as well too and I enjoy traveling on my Spyder as well all thanks to you. Good that yours has been reliable for you. I loved my 2014, even with it's buzzy motor and lackluster brakes. I traded for a 2019, it's a $26,000 paperweight. Constant overheat, pukes coolant, BEST warranty is a complete and total joke. Good mechanics are far and few. CanAm has for all practical purposes washed their hands of it, and I will too, soon. Someone out there will want it... they can swap a motor, or R&R what is likely a head gasket issue, because CanAm won't. That 998 twin had it's quirks, but it started and ran every day. My 19 has 5200 miles on it and has left me sitting somewhere more times than not.
I loved and love my 2009/2008. RSS Semi-auto. So much fun!! Yet we have no dealer and no spare parts. So I bought a 2nd identical RSS 2008 so that at any one time. One of the Trikes is working. (and yes the other is stuck with VSS errors and limp home modes). But the other runs fine!
As an engineer - go with a Kumho or any tire other than Kenda as Kenda IS a car tire all tires on the CanAm are car tires - Lower the pressure front to 14psi rear 26 psi. You should get 45k on tires. Laser alignment is also expensive and no more accurate than a tape measure as all you can adjust is toe which has little affect on handling but does affect tire wear. I would not do spark plugs for at least 100k. You are right however that $365 per year on maint is pretty good. You have made good choices and the spyders are a definite step up from any two wheel bike

After watching this video I never heard you talk about changing the "Brake Fluid" out, Look at your owners manual and see if it calls for changing it out every two years or so.
I let my shop (Fredericksburg Motor Sports) do all the maintenance on my 2016 RTS. Bottom line: I'm lazy and not a great mechanic plus I had the extended warranty. I did the same with my 2011 RTS when I had it.
My wife and I have a 2018 F3 Ltd. We got it in 2019. It was new but used in a Can An class and it had about 80 or so miles on it. Now it has over 17k miles on it. My wife and I split driving it.

It’s all relative. I spend about 430.00 a year with tires every other year on a two wheeler. You brought up the rv thing, did you two give up on getting an rv? Thanks for the video. Stay safe
Looking forward to meeting you two in Bisbee in a few months! Question: you are performing yearly oil changes, which is a super safe idea. But the manual sets up oil changes much less frequently. Did your dealership or shop recommend this, or are you just being extra careful?
Hi John, Maybe you can answer this question for regarding storage capacity on your Spyder RT, is there enough room anywhere vertically where i would be able to carry a couple of softball bats? The bats are 34 inches in length along with gloves.
The deepest cargo area is only about 22 inch. However, there is an optional "after market" luggage rack for the rear truck. One could strap the bats to that.
Great question. Spyder or in a car, I find that the longer I set the tighter everything gets. We shoot for 1.5 hours max between stops. The fit of the Spyder seat and grips do a good job. I have added a home made lumbar support that I can move/adjust as needed. I love it. In 2019 after 4 straight days of riding I had to get a massage as it felt like someone had put a knife between my shoulder blades. But I was fine for the rest of the trip. I will note that trying to maintain a better level of fitness helps. Im not a jock by any stretch , but I try to workout several times per week.
In our trip to the outer banks of NC we averaged 35 mpg, that is a fully loaded Spyder and trailer. I also seldom travel over 65 mph, better gas mileage.
Loved your video and site ; My only question is : “ Can we call it a really healthy hobby / holiday ? “ Just like my gun , this is not a toy ! PS : I’m looking forward to being a future owner .
20,000 miles in five years?? We ride 15,000 each year and have for many years on two wheeled machines. A couple years ago we had to go to three wheels due to my wife's health issues, but it wasn't a Cam Am Spyder.
@@jaxx2688 It is a TriGlide. We bought a 2020 teal colored one , put on 21,000 miles then traded it in on a 2021 Billard Red Tri Glide. We like the way they handle, but the ride is a little hard. I lowered the rear tire pressure to 20 psi and installed a pair of progressive shocks which helped. Now it handles small bumps great, but large bumps it still hits hard and sometimes your but will leave the seat.
Thanks for sharing the information. I did notice you didn't mention changing the brake fluid. The manual calls for a change every two years. Did you address that as well?
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog we recently had issues with our brakes. I changed the rotors and calipers and replaced the brake fluid but couldn't ever get them adjusted correctly. I ended up throwing in the towel and taking it to a shop and they said that bleeding the brakes on these things correctly when it is out of whack is a pain. Did you have any issues?
@@blazervol3357 I saw the same info after doing my rear brake when I had to pull the caliper off. I found if I used the bleed points at the brake and the ones up front it works fine.
I'm curious why you didn't change the spark plugs yourself? It doesn't sound harder than the oil change the way you described it. Also I don't think you mentioned how many miles you put on the Spyder in those 5 years. That would be interesting to know. By the way I think an average of $400./yr. is great. I don't think maintenance on any vehicle is going to be a lot less than that.
My husband would really enjoy buying and riding a motorcycle but wants me to come along. I have a fear (irrational, I know) of riding on a two or three wheeled motorcycle. I trust my husband's skills and ability to navigate safely. What I fear is "the other guy" on the road, the cars and trucks. Also not crazy about wind in my face (I know, there are helmets with face shields). I just don't understand the draw of this type of travel. Am I being unreasonable?
Of course not. Never let others decide for you. I would add, one should push ones comfort zone occasionally. The first time I went snow skiing, I hated it and fell a lot. and was sore for days after. The second time, I fell less and was less sore, the third time, I got it and fell in love with it. Then there was mountaineering, tried it, scared myself over and over again, never did it again!!
I heard especially on utube that the can- am spider is not that reliable and hight matinance. You have owned your can- am for 5 + years what is your take on those 2 concerns and what you can add to those concerns. Thank you
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog were retired and trying to get my wife onboard on getting one. We did spend alot this year on a new truck and car. But for tax purposes were going to wait next year I think lol convince the wife 1st. Just wanted to get some info on the spider. Red & black are my colors. Hay Kevin, Its 6 ft 2 inch wide and 8 ft 8 long. Ours is 9ft (tow hitch). It only has about a 4 inch ground clearance. As to speed bumps, very similar to a car. Take care.
You mention replacing the brake pads. Curious why you think the fronts needed replacing after just one year? You put over 15k miles? Also, no mention of replacing the brake fluid. Should be every two years. Brake fluid level lowers as the pads wear. So just adding fluid isn’t the answer. The owners manual has a maintenance schedule. You don’t seem to follow it. Wonder why.
I was covering the cost of maintenance. DOT 4 is only a few $$ per container and not addressed in detail in the video. The front brake pads replaced in 2018, it had about 4 years and 20K on them.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog You mention having to replace or service every so often. But fail to mention brake fluid. Engine oil doesn’t get changed every year, but at 3k miles then 6k after that. Basically, you’re video is a bit confusing.
@@susierebelryder492 We have the 2014 RTL SE6, with the 1330 engine. The book calls for oil changes every 9000 miles or every 12 months, which ever comes first.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog I’ve been riding for over 42 years. I’ve driven cars much less but have never heard of changing the engine oil every year. I know the manual says to but anyone that knows engines will tell you every so many miles. I think it has something to to with storing the vehicle. I don’t let my vehicles sit for more than a month. I also don’t think about the cost as I like riding motorcycles at any price. If you’re going to talk about “is it worth it?” Then talk about ALL that needs to be done. Many that complain about the cost of servicing really shouldn’t buy one. Spyders (motorcycles) are either fun or they’re not, cost is immaterial.

🎉 I really like your videos
Great vids! Thank you! Question...do you find your back, shoulders, or arms getting fatigued on long trips?
Great question. Spyder or in a car, I find that the longer I set the tighter everything gets. We shoot for 1.5 hours max between stops. The fit of the Spyder seat and grips
do a good job.
Thank you!
Very nice video, would like to know what is the actual miles per gallon?
In our trip to the outer banks of NC we averaged 35 mpg, that is a fully loaded Spyder and trailer. I also seldom travel over 65 mph, better gas mileage.
Loved your video and site ;
My only question is :
“ Can we call it a really healthy hobby / holiday ? “
Just like my gun , this is not a toy !
PS : I’m looking forward to being a future owner .
As long as it does not take away from other important thinks in your life,,, yes.
Great information thank you
You can change those plugs yourself. They are not that hard.
You are probably correct. I used to do plugs on my aircraft every year. I think its just I have so much on my plate getting ready for this trip.
20,000 miles in five years?? We ride 15,000 each year and have for many years on two wheeled machines. A couple years ago we had to go to three wheels due to my wife's health issues, but it wasn't a Cam Am Spyder.
Hope it was a tri glide.
Incredible fantastic
Thanks for sharing the information. I did notice you didn't mention changing the brake fluid. The manual calls for a change every two years. Did you address that as well?
Hay Eric, Yes, I forgot, I did flush it and changed the air filter.
I found if I used the bleed points at the brake and the ones up front it works fine.
nice vid, kudos
I'm curious why you didn't change the spark plugs yourself? It doesn't sound harder than the oil change the way you described it. Also I don't think you mentioned how many miles you put on the Spyder in those 5 years. That would be interesting to know. By the way I think an average of $400./yr. is great. I don't think maintenance on any vehicle is going to be a lot less than that.
Hay Fred, As to the spark plugs, I simply no longer have the patients for that complicated,,, getting lazy in my old age.
Great video from council kev uk
❤
What is the MPG of the Spyder? Is it about the same as a car ? Or a motorcycle?
We get 35 mpg and that fully loaded with the trailer.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog thanks so much for the info. You have great videos. I really enjoy them.
the price on the oil change just blows me away... that is more than double the cost of an oil change on a sedan
Its the labor to open and close it up.
Nice video😊… do i need a motorcycle license to drive a can -am spyder ?
That depends on your state. What state are you in?
I heard especially on utube that the can- am spider is not that reliable and hight matinance. You have owned your can- am for 5 + years what is your take on those 2 concerns and what you can add to those concerns. Thank you
Simple, Do not plug in after market electrical. The fuel pump issue is the only real issue we have had.
@@JohnMiriamsTravelVlog were retired and trying to get my wife onboard on getting one. We did spend alot this year on a new truck and car. I don't like driving the truck that much on a daily basis so I bought a 2009 elantra. 85,000 miles and it was a Florida car so it was like new shape especially the underneath. $5,000. But for tax purposes were going to wait next year I think lol convince the wife 1st. Just wanted to get some info on the spider. Red & black are my colors. The reason for the truck is to mainly pull our 22' camper. It's 2021 GMC elevation. We plan on traveling with it down south from NH so needed something reliable. But miss my motorcycle so the can-am seem would be alot of fun. Weekend trips fall foliage etc.
I was looking at the cam cruiser for 26k today 4-27-24 , just don’t know a lot for a toy ,, any thoughts ??
Yep, did a video on it, check it out: "The Can-Am Spyder, is it worth it"?
What is considered high mileage on these spyders? I’m looking at buying a used one that has 20,000 on it.
The Spyder has a normal life expectancy of 100,000. We have 45k on ours.
If no trouble .how long are they and width at widest point. Outerwheels .
And do they go over speed bumbs ok as loads wear I live nottingham uk. Thanks in advance rt looks better for me and wife but only can get 2011 or 2012 as they about £10,000-£12,000
Hay Kevin, Its 6 ft 2 inch wide and 8 ft 8 long. Ours is 9ft (tow hitch). It only has about a 4 inch ground clearance. As to speed bumps, very similar to a car. Take care.
2008 Can Am Spyder M5 with 10,000 klms a good buy?
A good unit, but depends on price
What year is your spyder Rt ?
2014 RTL
What year is your Spyder.
2014
What music?
How many miles do you have on it
42k
😳 Did you just say it was such a hoot? 😐🤦♂️
yep
why does it cost over 100 bucks to change oil
The kit has the oil, filter, new gaskets for oil drain, transmission drain and filter.
Oh ok and I watch someone change it, what a process
4:40
wait... $350 to change the spark plugs? i'm losing interest in Can-Am
But its only at about 35,000 miles, mostly labor to open the spyder up. If you do it at the same time as an oil change, As I did, you samve $$$.
Yamaha
do you have regrets? yes or no? not wanting to watch your adventures just want to know what your regrets are.
I'm just interested in how good the product is, not the rest of the unnecessary talk.

Hi John, this is Bob. Would you be so kind to send me your email. I have a question for you. Thanks Bob
