I love this man - Rumpole of the Bailey holds many treasures but the main one is this glorious lovely man speaking words of sonorous resounding beauty when he recites the poetry and sharp savvy intellect when he presides over his defense. I stumbled onto ROTB v. recently having never seen it before in my life - it fit the bill and fed the need I was looking for - warmth, heart, brains, intellectual heft and substance all embodied in Mr. McKern -wish his grandiose presence was still with us - his sonorous declamation of poetry are a comfort and the whole series chock full of little intellectual, cultural and humorous nuggets. I agree with one of the characters - he IS so cuddly!.

Rumpole's finest scene: (In my opinion.)
When R. says farewell to his son, going off to N.America. Father and son: So touching!

I have a great liking and admiration for Leo McKern in his portrayal of Rumpole. I bought the 30 episode series on dvd. I have to say I'm a bit miffed about McKern's show of disrespect for Dustin Hoffman by calling him Dustbin Hoffman without stating the reason. I'm assuming it has to do with his daughter, Abigail, relating her unhappiness with Hoffman while acting with him in The Merchant of Venice. Still, an unusual thing to do to berate a fellow actor in public without giving reason, unless he had a compulsive need to play on words. (He did the same in another interview promoting BOSWELL. Bizarrely, neither program host seemed to find it necessary to question him as to why he was calling Hoffman , "Dustbin". ).
