This man is so brilliantly clever. He is absolutely my favourite person. Himself, always, and so naturally outstandingly the best. Thanks , John( Australia )

A most enjoyable conversation. It was interesting to see how Mortimer’s values inderpin the character of his Rumpole as portrayed in the series. Thankful for these gifts. Wish Rumpole of the Bailey could be re-mastered and made widely available.

Unfortunately this type of person (the writer and presenter) no longer exists.

Another lovely reminder that Mavis is (still alive in 2022) our greatest ever TV interviewer.

He was, indeed. I was fortunate to meet him on numerous occafions as he very kindly accepted my invitation to speak at functions held at Westminster Abbey, Magdalen College Oxford, the British Museum when I was PR Director of the Oscar Wilde Literary Trust. We first met at The Cadogan Hotel when he gave an after dinnet speech. Oscar had been present briefly in waxwork form before going to Madame Tussauds. I had lunch with John Mortimer at Sheekeys several times. He told hilarious stories. I still have the correspondence we exchanged. I heard his death announced on my car radio and a recording of him reciting part of a Wordsworth poem I'd sent. We agreed, if we had anything approaching a religion, it was Wordsworthian.

John Mortimer looks a lot like Mel Smith in a skit for 'Not the nine o'clock news'.
