Strawberry Squares - Bonita's Kitchen

Today we will be making a delicious batch of STRAWBERRY SQUARES!!
This is an old fashioned recipe that was given to us by one of our viewers here in NL. This recipe is only a few simple ingredient's but taste amazing!!! SEE RECIPE POSTED BELOW.

Ingredients:
Step A:
2 cups graham wafer crumbs ½ cup melted margarine
Method:
Mix together and press into a greased 8” square pan.
Preheat oven to 325ºf for 7 to 8 minutes. Let cool!!
Step B:
1 tub frozen strawberries, 2 or 3 cups 1 (85g) pack strawberry jello
1 (15 ml) envelope plain gelatin 3/4 cup hot water
¼ cup cold water 2 tsp sugar
Step C:
1 pack of dream whip
Method:
Scoop up two cups frozen strawberries and sit aside in a bowl to thaw.
Then open a package of strawberry jello dissolved in 3/4 cup of boiling water.
Open a pack of gelatin and dissolve in ¼ cup cold water.
In a saucepan on a medium stovetop heat, mix together step B ingredients and heat to almost boiling stirring to dissolve gelatin and sugar.
Remove from the heat, pour into a bowl and let cool to a jelly consistency at room temperature in a cooler room then the kitchen ( not in the fridge at this stage) then spread over graham base.
In a bowl, add full envelop of dream whip powder, following the package for mixing information, then spread over top of the strawberry filling. Then put in the fridge, let set over night or a few hours before cutting into large squares.
Viewers Tips:
Use frozen strawberries and let thaw.
Use dream whip if available for original taste or replace with whipped cream or cool whip.
Keep in refrigerator until all eaten.
Use a cold bowl for mixing the dream whip, by putting the bowl in the fridge for one hour before using.

This recipe was given to us by Joy, one of our viewers. This recipe was given to her 40 years ago by her mom from a recipe shower she had for her.

A fun recipe idea. Slight allergy issue so I'd substitute mangos, peaches or maybe wild cherries (often available bagged in the freezer section) and use the related Jello flavors. A cool refeshing treat.

Looks delicious. Do you think it can be done with other fruits? Like raspberries?
I would say, "Why not". The raspberries are a great idea.

Right now I have rhubarb that's almost ready for harvesting. I wonder whether this recipe could be altered to make strawberry-rhubarb squares. (And happy Mother's Day. 🙂)
Oh yes for sure, just cook both of them the same and only for a few minutes so you can taste both. My rhubarb is only popping through the ground. I lovely rhubarb recipes. We have so many available here on our channel if you are looking for a recipe. :) Enjoy Bonita

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. Is dream whip the same as whipped cream?
Good question!! Whipped cream is plain and no sweetener in it!! But Dream whip got a sweetener in the mixture. The end result is the same it whips the same. So you can use whipping cream if you wish, the strawberries will balance the dessert. Enjoy and thank you for stopping by. :) Bonita
If I use fresh strawberries, will I need to add any liquid in the pot.
I've only used the frozen but I'm sure if you use fresh it will work the same. Cut them in half and just follow the same method. Enjoy Bonita

Hi, my New Fundland friends. Happy Mothers Day to all of us, Mothers. 18 years ago, my son, who was in the service and stationed in Iraq, sent me a Mother's Day card. I was already sad as we were so far apart on this special day and was hoping that the mail brought me a Mothers Day card. Well it did and when I opened it, the card read.....To the best " step Mother" on earth. Well immediately went from sad to mad....he had crossed out with a pen the word Step....when I talked to him on his next phone call home, and I asked him, what the hell ?.... he Said all the Mothers Day cards at the PX were gone so he got that one. A Mother knows her child and he was trying to get out of his misery that I was giving him. I know exactly what he did. He just GRAB the first card he saw with the word Mother on the front, addressed it, and sent it home to me. We'll I have kept that card all these years, and I tortured him every Mothers Day since.....it's precious to me and told him not to buy me any cards as I always display the Step Mothers card every year. We are very close to each other and have a good laugh over it every year. But I will continue to torture him.....lol please have a wonderful Mothers Day Bonita.
Haha that was the best story I've heard about Mother's Day that made me laugh...so adorable. It was the though that counts for sure. But I can relate....Our oldest son Brad forgot our 25th anniversary and we were waiting his phone call all day and night!! so 11:45pm I called him and said....how was your day. He was thinking something was wrong for me to be calling him so late. He lived away and it was a time difference, But after a few minutes he said happy anniversary and haven't forgot since...haha.
