Europe’s Path to Self-Destruction: Following U.S. as Global Order Comes Apart, w/ Vijay Prashad

  • Europe has ceded its core decisions to the US warmongers flooding Ukraine with arms, expediting the global economy’s collapse and extending the war against their own interests. But Ukraine isn’t the only major event stressing the global order: the US flexing against China, global inflation, a possible victory for the left in Colombia, massive protests in Sri Lanka, and even the senseless school shootings in the US reverberate across the world.
To help make sense of it all, Vijay Prashad, Executive Director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and author of “Washington Bullets: A History of the CIA, Coups, and Assassinations,” joins Dispatches with Rania Khalek.

When you put China-US relationship in historical context, it's easy to understand the animosity America as a government and nation feels against the Chinese and China. After its independence and its own war against colonialism and imperialism, America itself did a volte face and joined the ranks of imperialist powers. It seized territories from Mexico, the Kingdom of Hawaii, islands, other islands in the Pacific, and replaced European colonial powers with itself. This happened famously in the Philippines and many south American colonies. It saw China as a ripe plum, ready for picking and went for it with guns blazing. America had experience of dealing with Chinese people - it hated them and banned them from entering the US by passing the Chinese Exclusion Act, the only law aimed specifically at a race of people. To prevent those who were already in the US from procreation and "spreading like weeds", it had also passed the Page Act to prevent Chinese women entering the US. The US, like other European colonial powers of the time found China a nation weakened by an incompetent and corrupt Manchu dynasty. It was easy of them to carve China up like a Christmas turkey and bleed China as much as they liked. This they did with opium and by exacting huge war reparations from the very wars their drug pushing to the Chinese started. Fast forward to recent times. China under the CPC has become a prosperous nation that is no longer militarily or economically weak. Rather it has demonstrated to the world that by dint of sacrificial hard work, determination and good governance, there is an alternative to the dogmatic and ruthless capitalism of the west, particularly the monolithic, monopolar world with America on top of the pyramid of nation and dominating everything from fast foods to financial transactions at the point of a gun. This was an affront to America. How could a race it despised, long before the CPC was even founded, rise to offer an alternative way nations could rise from ashes to prosperity. This contempt America has always felt has little to do with communism. Had China risen as a western styled "democracy" but tried to be independent, the hate and animosity would just be as strong. The only way it would be accepted by America is as a docile minion, like Britain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, India, etc. i.e. the rest of the world, except for a few nations which continue to defy the US. China has rightly refused to bow to US hegemony. Despite America's puffed up ego, imagining that it has been appointed by divine fiat as "a shining beacon on a hill" to lead and rule the world, China has other plans. So, as long as the exceptionalism of the US is accepted by the western nations, and they supinely continue to obey the diktat of Washington, the relationship between America, its minions and China will be tensed and fractious. It is difficult to expunge from America's body politic hatred and racism which have tainted its perception.

Yes, similarly, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia became a "docile" nation under drunken delirium of Boris Yeltsin, a "friend" of Bill Clinton, despite his abysmal unpopularity within Russia. At first West and the US didn't know what to make of Putin, although Bush Jr said, he could look into Putin eyes and see his soul. And a few months later after 9-11 Putin one of the first people to personally call Bush to offer assistance in Afghanistan. Bush took up Putin's offer. ... But it was at the Munich Conference in 2007 (only 3 years after the US-backed Orange Revolution in Ukraine) when Putin made his feelings clear. It was clear that Russia will no longer be a docile nation for the interests of US imperialism. And, Bush responded to this at the Bucharest Summit in 2008 by encouraging the entry of Ukraine and Georgia into NATO

China's final goal is to RULE the entire Asia, and this plan was devised since 1949 by Mao. For thousands of years, we have had no concept of fulfilling contractual agreements, we only have deceptions. For thousands of years, we have had no concept of equality, we only have slave-master relationship. Thank God that I came to the US to study some 20 years ago and began to be able to think freely. From the military angel, the Russians just applied an old and proven military tactic. The Ukrainians were already fighting along the Eastern Ukraine with most of the Air support assets intact. So, here is the approach.
    1. Attack from multiple fronts same time take out the air support assets, logistics and reinforcement lane.
This was phase one of the special operations.
    2. Once the phase is achieved, withdraw to a vantage position and concentrate your forces to achieve your primary objective. Which is taking over and occupy Eastern Ukraine. Phase one was to deny or make it difficult for Ukraine to provide support to their forces in Eastern Ukraine.
    3. Phase 3 will likely be negotiations with Ukraine calling for a referendum in the Eastern.
The main loser will definitely be present day Ukraine.

When usa launches war on Afghanistan, spends 2 trillion then we say usa loses the war. But who loses? Not the ruling class who lends the money and definitely not the defense contractors. Capitalism initiated wars is a method of extraction from first world tax payers in a fundamental way. This also applies to the Ukraine war. When Germany approves future military expenditures who benefits are the defense contractors and bankers. Capitalists sometimes do not see beyond the first quarter profit statement. Geopolitics and its playing a role should be measured.

Vijay is wrong on Russia bombing hospitals, those hospitals were occupied by Azov military and were using it as a base. When you perform a human shield operation which is itself is a war crime, bombing the UKR positions and Azov nazis is not a war crime. Bucha again was staged by British propagandist to sway the direction of negotiations which stopped after the massacre (which consists of lots of white armed bands civilians death). Likely hood Ukrainians wanted to give crimea and Donbass to Russia which Nazis and West didn't want to. That's the real war crime. Sadly Vijay didn't do enough research on it or doesn't bother to watch other reporters like Patrick Lancaster or Eva Barlett.

That was never the US intention to befriend Russia since the Bolshevik October Revolution when the US and Western troops powers landed 100:years ago in Vladivostok to help the White Russians during 1918-1920. After WW2 and even after the fall of the former Soviet union, the US never abandoned its aggressive plot against Russia as it had already well prepared the ground by protecting and providing safe haven to forrmer Nazi collaborators to escape investigation and punishment by the Soviets. What is happening now in Ukraine is the resumption of the US and Western unfinished crusade against Russia.

Stunned (again) by Vijay Prashad's brilliantly lucid and honest take on the currents of today's global (dis)order, put sharply forth by Rania Khalek.
    For example:
    - excellent points made on the ruthless strategies of the "western" ruling class in relation to the Nato-Russia war in Ukraine - namely the tactics of "short-term pain and long-term gain" and it's global receipients (that is short and long-term pain for the masses and long-term gain for the ruling class) - and the criminal role of the "western" corpo/state media (and their well paid stenographers) in selling it to the public as short-term pain and long-term gain for all - an UNDEBATABLE sacrifice (and I would also like to add, especially here, in the now fully collonial belly of the "western" beast - Poland)...
    - or the valid question on the issue of the alleged past neutrality of Sweden, which flaunts nobel peace prizes left and right along with its extensive weapons exports' death-enterprise... which government is also one of the primary actors responsible for Julian Assange's tragedy (currently, probably the world's most persecuted journalist, fading away in the UK dungeon)...
    - or how the Bretton-Woods financial institutions still try and play and coerce (some) of the countries of the so called Global South (which in reality is THE world, or most of it)...
As always a great lesson on the hypocrisy in the contemporary world politics by BT News and Rania Khalek's great Dispatches series.
You, The Grayzone, Consortium News, People's Dispatch, The Multipolarista, MintPressNews, among the many more independent media outlets, are now more than ever the much needed voice of reason in these f*cked up times. Thanx 4 all your hard work!

Bandera and a few other Natzi collaborators are OFFICIAL Ukraine heroes. Thousands of monuments were installed throughout Ukraine, while they forbid Soviet army memorials (it's basically not allowed to celebrate victory over German Natzi). The reason is that ultra nationalists need to create a "pure" Ukrainian identity, without Russian heritage, and that's all they have. Ukraine's popular nationalist song words: "father Bandera, mother Ukraine"
All countries (in Europe, Russia, Israel) condemned it. But then West turned a blind eye. "Denazification" is not just Azov and other military units, it's against this deep fabric throughout Ukraine.
Ps: Zelensky and his backer oligarch Kolomoisky are Jewish.. ask them how they are ok with it, don't use it as a logical argument to deny the fact.

I am not an economist but it seems to me that we are not in a classic supply based inflation where too much money is chasing too few goods due in this case to the problems with the supply chains but rather a reduced purchasing power inflation where a large part of the population used up their savings during Cov-2 and are now in a situation where increases in income are being outstripped by costs of energy, food rent or mortgages plus increases in taxation. This started before the Ukraine war and is directly linked to the responses of governments during Cov-2 in shutting down economies for a problem that largely affected the retired and spraying money out to large companies whilst letting small business go to the wall such that those small businesses such as restaurants that survived cannot attract enough customers to pay wages high enough to attract staff and in agriculture the costs of inputs has gone to the point where farmers cannot finance the supplies they would normally use, even if they could get them, and so are reducing the areas down to crops with high inputs which is having an inflationary effect of food costs. In this situation it should be clear that the classic solution of increasing interest rates will only make the situation worse. The situation is exacerbated by the false climate change narrative with its war on fossil fuels which is the main reason for the high energy prices as there has been no incentive for energy companies in the oil and gas field to increase supplies, even if they could get the capital required for the investments combined with restrictive laws passed by governments. All we need now is the predicted cooling cycle to really set in an we will be faced with a real disaster. EU policy is being driven by the Green Germany belief in Blut und Boden or Blood and Soil in which they want to take Europe back to the deindustrialized agrarian economies of the Middle Age which also happens to be the objective of the eugenicists at the WEF since the famines that were common at that time and the ensuing deaths fit with their objective of a major decrease in global population. This is not surprising because both Macron and the German Greens leader Baerbock were WEF "Young Leaders of the Future".

Well I live and grew up in Sweden so I can tell you a thing or two abouot what the average regular Swede thinks of Nato and Russia. Well I guess I have to state that this are my own opinions, experiences and observations. This is not scientific and I don't have data to back it up. Also I'm generalising, of cause not every Swede is like this.
The Swedes all know that Sweden have been good friends with other western countries during conflicts. They know their Neutrality is questionable. In fact that's one of the reason the Politicians are pushing teh agenda to join Nato. I'm paraphrasing "We have basically always been a part of Nato, just not officially so we aren't getting all the benifits. By joining nothing really changes on our end but we will gain the guarantee of Nato protection when the Russians start attacking us."
So basically the largest selling point to join Nato is pointing at Ukraine and say "Look they aren't a Nato member therefore no one is helping them." Then pointing at the Baltic countries and Poland and say "Look they are Nato members so Russia dares not to attack them. Because they have Nato troops, weapons and equipment stationed there. Therefore Sweden need to join Nato so Russia wouldn't dare to attack us. And of they did we have Nato to back us up and we wouldn't end up like Ukrane."
Also this one othe point that comes up a lot when I talk to people. "We ally ourselves with likeminded people/nations that have common goals. Our goals and vision of the future lines up with US and not with Russia/China. Therefore it's only logical to ally ourselves with US over Russia/China."
The Swedes hate and fear Russia mainly because US influence since the cold war and somewhat their violent history with Russia from ways back.
Sweden and Russia have had wars on and off for hurdreds of years before the second world war. The last time Sweden have had a miltary conflict with Russia/Soviet was helping Finland during the "Winter War" right before the second World War. Sweden was an ally to the western side during the Cold War. And have been buddy buddy with the US since then, happily buying and drinking the US geopolitical Kool-Aid.
So to Swedes in their head still sees Russia as this totally 100% evil non redeemable comic book/movie villain (btw I'm Chinese, they view China in the exact same way and it's super frustrating). When you speak of Russia/China to a Swede, you can almost see the disgust forming on thei face and the bad tase in their mouths. This thoughts and feelings are like totally installed into their brains. They can't help to think this way. This is also why they hate Communism and Socialism. Even though they do have socialist practices they live by. It's to them Socialism "lite", in trasition to neo liberalism.
I once had a co-worker from somewhere near Turkey, I don't remember exactly where, who said on an after work that Russia isn't as bad as mainsteam media portrait it as. And people laughed at him, saying he was crazy and just stopped talking to him. And I don't mean at that after work. I mean they stopped including him in any non work activity. Sometimes I invited him and sometimes he basically had to invite himself. He later quit not that long after it happened.
Even when nothing geopolitical is happening in the area there are columns and articles popping up regurlaly speculating on when Russia is going to attack Sweden. So when Russia uses military force in Ukraine. It basically, to them, validates everything theory/head cannon in their mind. A lot of Swedes are really scared shitless of Russia invading Sweden.
At the start of the Ukraine conflict, a lot of people in Sweden were doomsday prepping. They are so positive that Sweden is next on Russias invasion list.
Like I said. As a Chinese guy living in Sweden. It has been increasingly frustrating to live in Sweden ever since Covid started. They are leaning more than ever on US. And Sweden is joining Nato without the population having any say in the decision. I would have liked a referendum vote becaue it effects so many peoples lives. Even if the end result would still have been "Sweden joining Nato". Some democratic country I live in. I get to vote in every kindergarden populatiry contest, that is our elections, but I don't have a say in any real issues.

Good interview as usual, Rani. If I may add to Mr. Vijay's deep insights, EAM Jaishankar and President Putin have given hints for more balanced nation relationships: countries to put their own houses in order and the welfare of their people first, honoring their own cultures and histories..only then enter into various trade but specifically non military relationships.
President Putin has, in various addresses, spoken for the desirability of dealing with and respecting other countries as being "sovereign". Oh, how I wish for my country to adopt that perspective. As an example of respecting sovereignty: EAM Jaishankar admitted, yes, India has a dispute with China, but we are neighbors and are able to work it out on our own, thank you. Oh, I wish my.....
