Nicotine is the major substance responsible for tobacco addiction. Nicotine acts to increase the amount of a neurotransmitter called dopamine in the brain reward pathway, which is designed to “reward” the body with pleasurable feelings for important behaviors that are essential for survival, such as feeding when hungry. Chronic tobacco use produces repeated dopamine surges which eventually desensitize the reward system, making it less responsive to everyday stimuli. As the body adapts to constant high levels of dopamine, more and more nicotine is required to achieve the same pleasurable effect, and smoking cessation can produce withdrawal symptoms.
But nicotine is not the only substance to blame for tobacco addiction. At least another major constituent of tobacco smoke, acetaldehyde, is found to reinforce nicotine dependence, notably in adolescents. This may explain why teens are more vulnerable to tobacco addiction. In fact, most smokers started when they were teens.
Genetic makeup also plays a role in susceptibility to addiction. Some people are more prone to dependence than others when exposed to nicotine; and once addicted, less able to quit. Many genes are likely to be involved. What is inherited is perhaps the extent the brain responds to nicotine, and the rate of nicotine clearance. For example, people who metabolize nicotine more slowly tend to smoke fewer cigarettes a day and can generally quit with less effort.
The development of tobacco addiction depends on the speed and the amount of nicotine absorbed by the brain. Cigarette smoking delivers nicotine to the brain within seconds of smoke inhalation, resulting in immediate rewarding effects. Cigar smokers who inhale absorb nicotine as quickly as cigarette smokers. Those who don’t inhale absorb more slowly, through the lining of the mouth, but the amount of nicotine can be greater depending on the cigar size. Chewing on smokeless tobacco products delivers nicotine more slowly than smoking, but the blood levels of nicotine can be much the same.
There are behavioral factors that reinforce addiction. Behavioral factors may be as important to tobacco addiction as the action of nicotine itself.
Tobacco use is a leading cause of premature death. Smoking is associated with lung diseases and cancers, increases risks for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Smoking during pregnancy may deprive the fetus of oxygen and cause fetal growth retardation. Nicotine can cross the placenta to fetal circulation and cause withdrawal symptoms in infants. Smoking during pregnancy is also associated with increased infant deaths, as well as learning and behavioral problems in children.
Treatment for tobacco addiction usually consists of behavioral therapies combined with nicotine replacement such as nicotine patch and gums. The use of medicinal nicotine with low addiction potential helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms, while also reducing toxicity associated with other harmful substances in tobacco products and cigarette smoke.

So I come from addiction on both sides. Both my parents were addicted to cigarettes, crack, and alcohol. I drank alcohol because my family are all alcoholics. First time I went to a friend’s family function and there was no alcohol I was shocked like wow people get together and not drink alcohol I’ve never seen that. So I would always black out drinking , do things im not proud of and just feel really lousy. Never felt addicted just pretty much peer pressure from family. I started smoking cigarettes at 39 because I was in love with a monster who was emotionally abused me. For a whole year I was a full on smoker buying packs of cigarettes and everything. One day I just said to myself what am I doing and I stopped just like that. I can’t stand the smell of cigarettes like I was before. All my family drinks like fish and no one thinks they’re alcoholics. Alcohol has never been my friend and I don’t care for it anymore. The hangovers and blackouts. I’m over it. But guess what my family won’t accept me not drinking around them. They always start the peer pressure. So now I just stay away. Me not drinking I guess makes them feel bad that they can’t stop. I feel I have a calling to break the generational curse of addiction. God won’t let me settle in addition. I’m blessed.

@@Nancy-ow9wyI don't believe in addiction, just stop if you want to stop
Who cares
Last bit I don't agree with, using NRT to put it back into your system just prolongs the withdrawal, anyone who's a smoker and has tried to cut down knows that they spend there entire days just thinking about cigarettes, that's torture!
Agree 100 percent.
Cutting down is the worst strategy.
Just make ur mind and make a decision to stop smoking. Smoke as mucb as u want a d smoke ur last cigarette. This is howi quit
Thank you.
thanks
Congratulations. More facts than myths. This is really rare these days. But you still presented a few myths about the nicotine. For example, you don't need more and more nicotine to achieve a desired effect. It may be that a tiny percentage of people who smoke experiencing this, but it's definitely not the norm. A smoker usually sticks to a brand and the number cigarettes smoked daily doesn't increase for decades. If anything, they're lowering their nicotine consumption.
For some reason I can’t seem to like cigarettes or any form of it after I have tried it like 3/4 times but I never bought one again I just loved the smell of it not smoking it, like the after smell after you wash your clothes: that smells good to me for some reason
Every smoker starts from the first cigarette which he hates. and spend rest of his life finding how to quit.
Stop smoking now. Dont even try it for fun
@@muhammadmuzaffar2103 if you don't smoke anymore after the first couple trying to figure out the hype behind it, you won't go back. I do not believe it's addicting, like many things. It all comes down to the person and their choices.

@@justinlavigne9814 thats not true. Nicotine is a trap and it has same effect on every person. No one starts smoking to smoke for life rather everyone starts with occasional cigarettes but eventually got completely traped.

Never got the appeal of cigarettes. I tried one about 4 years ago. Then about 6 months later, I was diagnosed with asthma. I only smoked half a cigarette. Couldn’t finish it.

I think it’s misleading to label nicotine dependence as “tobacco addiction”. Most people seem to lump all tobacco products in with cigarettes and chewing tobacco. People who smoke cigars in general do not have nicotine dependence because the intake of nicotine is quite small. Nobody who smokes cigars inhales. In fact, the FDA did a study that found frequent premium cigar smokers at a negligible increase for cancer risk. There needs to be a distinction between premium cigars and other forms of tobacco.
Exactly! As a cigar smokier this bugs me! I don’t smoke them at the same frequency as those who smoke cigarettes as I can go long periods without a cigar.
I quite smoking tabbaco
if i knew this back then I would of stopped or not started earlier
I'm no smoker but I've been thinking about using nicotine patches to activate my nicotinic receptors for increased brain function. The dophmine problem however has me hesitating. But maybe I could trick myself into associating a possible nicotine addiction with something healthy like exercise or studying.
I wouldn't use nicotine patches if I were you. They can release the nicotine all at once and you could get very sick.
Try vaping at different mgs of different strength.
3,6, 12 but just dont use salt nics, you'll feel sick
@@theunlimitedchannel2022
Already started. I did vomit the first time but today I able to wear them with only some light dizziness. Seems like I am adapting to them. I also noticed slightly better mood and focus. Although that may be a placebo effect. Since I am starting with the 7mg patches I don't expect much benefits yet.
maybe vape? atleast then you can control the nicotine strength
Please don't do that
Why almost all talking about effect of cigarette smoking? But chewing of tobacco is most dangerous than smoking, it is 10 to 20 times more nicotine observe while chewing rather than smoking, we can quit smoking but impossible to quit chewing...
Just thinking about smoker adults who criticise teens and kids that game a lot and are dependent on the internet. Both are dopamine addicts.

The power of habit by James clear helped me stop smoking. It might help you too.
It is all in your mind my dear. If you have the will power to do it, you can do it. If you don't have the will power to do it, no matter how hard you try, you won't be able to quit it. Even assistance from external sources won't be of much help. No matter how hard the cravings might be, if your will is strong, you will definitely quit using tobacco. Believe in yourself.

Nicotine 🚬 is Highly Addictive!
As a attorney it’s not
Whether nicotine is dependence forming or not depends on the delivery system. The majority of people who get nicotine in the form of tobacco smoke become dependent. But this isn't caused by the nicotine alone. Other constituents are involved in the process (e.g. MAOI, monoamine-oxydase inhibitors). To date, no clinical study was able to show any dependence forming properties of nicotine in never-smokers.
That's why Carl Fagerström renamed his test "[...] nicotine addiction" to "[...] tobacco addiction".
No it's not. I'm proof of that. Lmao.
