  • Three people were killed when a semi-truck crashed on eastbound Interstate 70 near Ward Road around 8:20 a.m. Thursday and spilled its load of pipes onto the westbound lanes of the highway, where those pipes hit several vehicles.
As a result of the crash, the eastbound lanes of the highway are closed at Highway 6. The westbound lanes are closed at Kipling Street.

For a flatbed trucker, this is a reasonably light-load PVC sewer pipe. In other words, it didn't come undone or break loose from the weight. That trucker is in some trouble. I hauled plenty of PVC pipes of similar or different sizes. These kind of loads require strapping on each layer so they don't slide out in the middle. But very light possibly a 20/25,000 pound load, for a truck. The straps used to haul them are sufficient for this light load. As the load shifts, they will get loose and you tighten them frequently. But usually after a few hundred miles they more or less adjust, but you continue checking them. For a light pipe load to come undone those straps were loose. He was also on the hammer lane/inside of the interstate, in city. I have trucked through here hundreds of times in my 45 years over the road. It appears he was driving at the top speed, and in a city especially Denver you must drive slow, 55 mph, and be alert, because of the city drivers, cutting in and out, etc. This load should not have come off. There is a curve to the right when going east right before the wreck, which would cause a truck to tip left if going at an unreasonable speed, which appears to be exactly what happened. (I say center because truckers like to avoid incoming traffic) The word is there was some construction, so construction will automatically slow you. So how is a light load of pipe going to fly off? It appears he had three lanes to travel on. If he was in his center lane slowing below 55 mph, he would have been safe. I would say he was speeding, with a insecure load. I have seen flatbed trucks lying on their side with loads still intact with secure loading. He apparently came down from the mountain safely, then let her go when he reached the bottom. Younger drivers like to show off in a city, bullying, tailgating, zooming in and out, and frequent lane changes to show off their skill, which is really no skill. When I hit the Denver area I slow down and just cruise, in twenty minutes I am through town and can resume interstate speed. In my 45 years of trucking, I have never flipped a flatbed and lost a load, I hit the ditch hauling reefer in the 1970's I-80 Nebraska in severe icy conditions when a wreck occurred in front so I hit the ditch to avoid the crash in front of me. I guarantee you this driver was at fault. He lost it on the in city curve when he shouldn't have been going so fast to lose control.

@@rezkinginternational exactly what ive been saying. No gut straps, that load shifted mid turn and cause the truck to roll. It was not properly strapped. Those trucks at that company are governed at 65. Still too fast for that turn. But I agree no reason those should of come off like that. Ive seen a truck get hit by a train and the pipes stayed on the trailer.

I gave you a thumbs up. Your comment is true and accurate. I’ve pulled my own flatbed trailers for 50 years cross country with my Kenworth W900L tractors. I strap every layer of pipe 5 times. About 20 straps. When I travel through cities I become a turtle. Far right lane at 40 - 50 MPH. Head lights on and a very conservative approach. When you get east of Denver you can travel 75 MPH. One of the most infamous crashes in American history occurred 1/2 mile west of this crash. That driver is in prison and this one must be imprisoned as well. The public is tired of dangerous drivers.

This is my exit at I70 /Ward Rd. The overpass has been under reconstruction for over a year. The temporary lanes make a sharp turn for the old bridge removed a month ago and is currently being rebuilt. Everyone is driving 10MPH over the posted speed limit. This truck had a high center of gravity due to the light weight of the pipes and most likely took the temporary lanes too sharp or had to because of an unexpected lane incursion.

I've hauled pipe like that many many many times. It has belly straps which are placed at different intervals through the load.

So many trucks on the road its crazy many go way over the speed limit. We need regulations, trucks need to stay in one lane and most hauling needs to be done at night. 6pm-6am. and most of this long haul needs to be done by electric rail systems that we desperately need to get off this diesel fuel.

@@danielpearson4972 nope trucks tie up traffic for hours waste vast amounts of fuel and people are late for work who pays? I have spent countless hours on backed up traffic because some truck overturned or some accident involved with these trucks because of speed and careless driving just absolutely ridiculous. Go on vacation and there is a fuel truck overturned yep 3.5 hours wasted tied up traffic for 15+ miles WTH. These trucks speed , and have issues with breaks, tires, steering, etc. just look at the law suits involved look at the damage to our roads, guardrails even completely taken out bridge overpasses rammed into and some burned with melted steal. WTH.

(I say center because truckers like to avoid incoming traffic) It appears he had three lanes to travel on.
