The Redemption of Sony Animation

  • Sony Pictures Animation very quickly went from being the laughing stock of the industry to being one of the most innovative and consistent mainstream animation studios in just 5 years. While they've made a lot of bad films, I think it's important to highlight what wasn't working with their previous films and franchises and why their new direction is so refreshing to see.

They are currently firing their animation creatives as crazy. Pixar has been reduced in staff significatively. Yeah Disney is doubling down to Live Action Remakes.
Every other big animation studio is doing great, Illumination released the Mario movie, and even if it isn't perfect, it has a lot of heart in it, and resonates with the audience so hard it passed the billion mark. Dreamworks is still riding the success Puss in Boots has, and it seem Ruby Gillman might get nice views just by virtue or being the antithesis of what that Little Mermaid Live Action movie was. And we don't need to talk about Sony, this video already did, but i might point out how EVERY other animation company doing great right now is beating Disney's ass 'cause they decided to follow Sony's example. Disney (and by sadly extention Pixar) is still rejecting Sony's impact in the industry, probably 'cause it costed them an Oscar. But by rejecting Sony, they allowed their quality decrease, and now fucking Netflix kicked Disney's ass with a Pinnochio movie that's also a complete antithesis of Disney's Live Action take on Pinnochio... you can see a pattern here.

Joaquim Dos Santos- Worked on Avatar, improved the action aspect.

And there are TONS of examples of this!
-There are the scenes where Gwen and George had their intense conversations, there’s tons of use of clashing colours.
-Then you have the long-take/static-shot arguments between Miles and his parents, where they would let diegetic sound take over until the score comes in to compensate. I love the establishing shots of Jeff’s party where it would focus on people doing different stuff at a party rather than just showing them drinking and talking like in other movies, such as showing the food being made and kids playing trading card games.
-There’s also the parts where Hobie’s does super sneaky moves because he’s practiced a lot through taking countless leaps of faith during his time in his world. He sneaks around and steals stuff for the dimensional watch, and when he silently tells Miles to use his palms while he is captured, he makes it looks like he’s trying to calm Miles down (which in a way, he is, but again, there’s a layer to Hobie’s actions).
-I also love this common motif of alternate reincarnations of the Prowler being a guardian angel (or potentially devil depending on how Beyond’s story plays out) for Miles in some sort; in the first, it was Aaron 1610, who gave him a sense of self and in his dying words, gave him advice that would make Aunt May proud. In the second, it was Hobie (who was the OG Prowler in the comics), who gives him advice on his powers and challenges his perspectives on what he wants in life.
There’s this looming sense of immersion in not just the situations like in Spider-Man 2, but in the dialogue and in the little details.

As much as I do have hopes for Disney's Wish and that its style does look lovely, it still feels significantly leaning towards the 'safe' style they've been relying on, despite its portion of 2D qualities. Hell, sometimes it feels like all they did was just put an outline filter you'd see in video games, like they did the bare minimum to diversify.
It's rather telling and peculiar how Disney has insisted on keeping things safe to mixed results while other mainstream studios have been or starting to take risks, be the storytelling and/or visuals, and paying off both critically and financially. Not billion dollar levels like Frozen or Incredibles 2, but still considerable amounts that more films are in the works by these risking studios.
Of course, damn good artists and writers and so on helped in that regard, but it's clear that in comparison, Disney is fading into this 'been there done that' atmosphere that's even starting to affect people's views on Pixar despite their own attempts to branch out, which is unfortunate.

    • @dremcrak5647

FINALLY someone talks about how Wish looks like they just put a filter on it! I don't have anything against people who like how it looks, or against the animators who probably worked their asses off to make that style, but every single comment on the trailers is "Wow, the mix of 2D and 3D looks amazing!!" and it's like... Have you even seen Spider-Verse?? Or Mitchells Vs the Machines??? Do you actually KNOW what mixing 2D and 3D means?!??!
But yeah Disney has definitely been not trying at all with how their animated films look lol. I don't doubt there are a lot of extremely talented animators working on their movies, but unless they try to be more creative and truly push the envelope of what an animated film can be, they'll be stuck in their mainstream look that is really starting to lose relevance

    • @michaelstrong5383
      @michaelstrong5383 11 месяцев назад +12

And it's not like Disney couldn't mix 2D and 3D animation together. Look at their short films like Paperman and Feast. Unfortunately, their excuse as to why they haven't made a feature film in that style is because they don't think it's ready for that length yet.
Meanwhile, Sony just released their second Spider-Verse that pushes the envelope even more than the original did, and Disney is falling way behind with the trend.

Like, their last 2D animated features like Winnie the Pooh and Princess and the Frog were """conveniently""" put near Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows Part 2 and Avatar respectively and look how that turned out. Whether something like the 'female oriented' titles like 'Princess and the Frog' had something to do with it, I'll never know, but it's obvious Disney manufactured an excuse to stay away from 2D animation.
Where Wish feels like Disney is pretty much saying, "Oh my god, fine, we'll give you your "precious" 2D animation again.🙄The way WE want it, though! 😃"
They're pretty much trying to enforce that 2D is bad and that 3D should be permanent because I guess their 2000's flop era is still fresh in their minds.

@@dremcrak5647 There IS some effort there in Disney's animated films, definitely. Their films still look great and impressive in their own right, which the artists and animators themselves should be acclaimed for. The issue lies on Disney overall not wanting to step out of their comfort zone because they insist playing it safe will keep them afloat, which again led to more so mixed results than 100% guaranteed. And this issue applies to everything they've released, no less. Animated or not.
Nowadays, 3D has become the new norm and isn't that special like in the 2000's, hence why Spiderverse, Mitchells, Puss in Boots, and Ninja Turtles stand out so much because they're willing to do something new with a medium that has gotten very 'average' at this point.

We’re definitely entering to a Renaissance Era for Sony Pictures Animation. They are giving creators and artists more freedom with their projects. Both Spider-Verse movies and The Mitchells gives me a good hope for the future of this studio (Even though i already love Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs).
Speaking about the future, i heard that Sony Pictures Animation will start investing into more PG-13 and R-Rated animated feature films. That’s pretty exciting. 2 of them will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky: Fixed and Black Knight. I don’t know much about Black Knight, but i heard that Fixed will be 2D animated! Finally a 2D western animated movie in theaters.
With that in mind, i hope they give another chance to Mr. Tartakovsky to finish Popeye and Can You Imagine.

I disagree with the Dreamworks point. Yeah, 2 movies doesn't mean they're going to head into a renaissance, but it does suggest a change. In the interviews for TLW and Bad guys, the creators talk about the support they received from the dreamworks execs, and suggest more movies of that quality are in DreamWorks' future.
It seems like after several years, Universal has finally figured out what they want to do with DreamWorks, where they want to build up Dreamworks as a higher quality and more experimental studio, while Illumination is their cash cow.

To be honest, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is an excellent movie in my opinion. May I add that it still holds up a bit now. I remember it airing a lot on Cartoon Network back when I was a kid.
Sure, Sony Pictures Animation has a reputation for releasing crap films, but they have released some good films here and there, but rarely. With Hotel Transylvania 1 and cloudy being two examples.
And I still agree with the fact that the emoji movie is very, very VERY bad. And I say that as a guy who saw it on OPENING NIGHT in the movie theater. It was pretty much one big ol' ad, basically.
Overall, there are a couple of EXCELLENT movies this studio made that I treasure and most that I absolutely hate.
Gladly, Sony picture animation is somewhat out of that phase of making bad films, and lets just hope it stays out of it.

To be honest, I even liked most of Sony Animation's movies, even before the revival period. They weren't gems of Pixar caliber (except Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf's up, Hotel Transylvania, and the Aardman co-productions), but they were pretty interesting, entertaining, and good movies. I admit that I even liked the first Open Season. It wasn't a hit, but a pretty decent movie, and I've never understood so much hate for it. The only thing I could fault them are the two lousy Smurf Live-Action movies, the weak sequels Open Season and Surf's Up on DVD, and the terrible Emoji Movie. I always thought they were pretty decent, but now it's really great to see the studio grow and start sweeping Disney under the rug. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Nice video! I think to fully understand Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) you also need to consider Sony Pictures Entertainment as a whole and how it's structured. Under the latter there's also Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), which basically is a production house that produces most of SPA's high budget films, as well as do work for other clients (WB, Netflix, etc.)
And while Sony Pictures Animation is a known commodety now, it's different than studios like Dreamworks, Disney and Pixar in that they don't make their movies in-house.
Once you start to look into it, it becomes even more interesting.
For example, while The Star, Wish Dragon and Into The Spider-Verse are all technically SPA films, out of these three only Into The Spider-Verse was made at Sony Pictures Imageworks (that includes look development, animation exploration, lighting and post-production, to name a few).
As another example, the people that made the Spider-Verse films and The Mitchels vs The Machines, also made movies for other clients such as Storks, The Sea Beast, Small Foot and others. Also, both Angry Birds movies were made by Imageworks while technically belonging to different clients.
It's something that most often goes unnoticed, who actually produced the film, and gets brushed off by who owns/distributes the films.

I still remember being extremely baffled when Spiderverse came out, because like many other people, I couldn't believe how they went from producing the Emoji movie to doing once of the best western animated films and having an animation that was like nothing we had ever seen before.
I'm glad it paid off because with Disney thinking Live Action remakes are a good idea (which makes their direct to DVD sequels look creative and I cannot believe I said that,) Pixar trying to play safe, and everyone talking about AI and how to use it; is nice to have Sony actually letting their creators have enough freedom to produce this amazing movies.
The sad part is that this probably happened because Sony as an animation studio wasn't doing well so experimenting made sense since they were trying to find something to stick; and is the exact reason why Disney despite having so many IPs and money are refusing to do anything new, because they would rather use their pre-establish formula than try to do anything new.

The only good thing about the Emoji Movie was that it was the movie that made Sony go, "Oh no. We hecked up." So they redeemed themselves by hiring Kristine Belson as their new CEO and made themselves rise to the top by releasing "Into the Spider-Verse." And they were like, "Wait, Spider-Verse can't be our only good film. We still need to be better." So they only hired incredibly talented animators, storytellers, and filmmakers who are so passionate about their projects, so that led the company to make even better films like "The Mitchells VS The Machines," "Wish Dragon," and "Vivo." And now that they finally released "Across the Spider-Verse," the company went from heading to its downfall to stealing Disney's crown, and that's a good thing.
Ever since Kristine Belson took over as CEO of the studio, Sony Animation is in a much better place now. They're taking more risks, they're trying new things (like how they accepted "Vivo" because they never did a movie musical before, and they trusted Lin-Manuel Miranda to make it good), and they literally hired a talented 14-year-old boy to animate the Lego dimension in "Across the Spider-Verse." THAT'S INSANE.
Let's hope Sony can put the past behind them and stay the way they are right now.

After watching Across the Spider-Verse, it is funny to release that it came from the same studio that made the two live action Smurfs movies, The Emoji Movie, and The Star. Granted I knew about their older films prior to Spiderverse, I actually enjoyed the first Open Season, I loved Surf Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania 1&3. But I’m glad they redeemed themselves from being the most mediocre to awful animation studios to one of the best.

You forgot that Into The Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animation Feature at 2019 Oscar beating the record of Disney/Pixar which won the category from 2012-2018

The only problem I have with spiderverse 2 is Miles mask he looks more like a fly than a spider and if he takes it off it looks even weirder
