Ducktales was good because they had new stories to tell like Della's backstory, webby and Mrs. Beakley's backstories, and new backstories for characters like daisy, Jose and Ponchito and the duck family as a whole. Most other reboots are just concerned about staying as close to the original as possible in regards to storytelling(you never can stay the same-people and taste change). So it will always feel old hat if you are hearing the same stories

My favorite cartoon reboots/revivals are stuff like Ducktales 2017, TMNT 2012, and Transformers Prime. They still remain recognizable as the previous original series, however, they're able to elevate their stories in major ways that not only helps them stand out, but also provides a level of quality that couldn't be possible during the eras when their predecessors were previously created.

The thing about the Animaniacs reboot is, it SEEMED to leave a strong impression at first despite the whole 'shutting out Ruegger' shit, but then more cracks show the further along you go in. It undoubtedly still had its high points throughout but it's easy to see why the perception turned the way it did (even more so with how we now have Tiny Toons Looniversity, which seemed to do right on a lot of where this went wrong).

Revivals need to hit a narrow goldilocks zone to be good.
They need to capture the old spirit and magic of the original; if they don't then it'll just seem like nostalgia pandering and riding on the coattails of established beloved characters.
At the same time, they need to inject fresh, new ideas in order to avoid becoming stale and outdated.
The modern Ducktails did a fantastic job of hitting that sweet spot.
Unfortunately, most of them wind up swinging too far in one direction or the other.

Ngl I think the Total Drama reboot was pretty good (minus one particular episode that you've probably seen floating around), it had my personal second favorite cast behind the original since a lot of them feel realistic and go through decent development. It's a shame that Chris's iconic voice had to change, but considering what happened with his original VA, it's understandable and you do get used to his new voice after a while. I like that they gave Chef more of a role after he was underused in the last couple seasons. I have high hopes for the second season since they're using all of the cast again which will hopefully give more development time for the ones who were eliminated early last time.

From having some of the most impactful works in the world of comic books by Carl Barks and the later continuation of said works by Don Rosa, to having a great animated adaptation of those comics that changed the perception that 80s cartoons had established, to having one of the first few good licensed videogames in history, to having a remake of said game that was even better and had even more passion for the IP, to having a reboot of the original TV show that was actually pretty great and had its own identity.

The 2012 Ninja Turtles series is genuinely fantastic, it has amazing plot progression, the characters aren’t one note, the voice acting and the voice cast are peak, it’s one of the few 3D animated shows at the time that ACTUALLY LOOKS GOOD with its stylized animation, the series takes a lot of older concepts from the movies, comics, and others series and does something unique instead of just shoving it in like so many other reboots do, the soundtrack is killer, and l the dark and creepy vibe this show has makes it stand out from other Tmnt series.

The Animaniacs reboot becomes more frustrating the more I look back at it. The trailer showed a lot of promise, and while the first season wasn't without its charm and humor, it missed the mark in a lot of places (the animation, the writing, characterization, etc.). Unfortunate that this would continue on into the later seasons to the point where the show literally ends with (Spoiler!) everyone presumably dying. It was a bizarre ending that kind of feels indicative of the problem with the show's new focus of humor: it's often morbid, gross, and mean-spirited.

    • @DC-iu7gn
      @DC-iu7gn 9 месяцев назад

I will never understand why with the reboot they say it is very mean-spirited even though the original series was always that mean-spirited, I said it before and I'll say it again, that does not take away the fact that in the original series he was literally the zone of comfort where the writings took revenge for everything, every time something happened to the writings in real life or the competition simply bothered them (the latter referring to all the parodies of Disney), they turned it into an episode where they took revenge of anything that they disliked, that's the same as the reboot but in this one they do it differently compared to the original series.

Rise of the TMNT has the best visuals and animation I've ever seen in a Western TV cartoon, and I will die on this hill. Even some of the meh episodes can be carried by the animation alone, although the writing did get MUCH stronger starting in the second half of S1. It's a real shame what happened to it, and I still hope it returns

@@bootyyyshaker9000_ahem yk I've never watched LMK (I've really wanted to though, I just wish the first two seasons were easier to access) but I've seen clips and that show also looks insanely good, yeah. Every Flying Bark show from Rise onward has some crazy good visuals, but even by those standards, Rise and LMK are on another level.
I've heard Flying Bark is animating the upcoming ATLA reboot, and I'm ngl that's the only reason I plan to watch it. That studio is way too good for all of their shows to fly under the radar and get cancelled

DC Superhero Girls (2019), in my humble opinion, is an example of a reboot that can be better than original. The "original" webseries of the same name premiered back in 2015 was nothing a quantity over quality cashgrab that only existed to sell toys. DC Superhero Girls (2019), on the other hand, is more than that. Despite having some flaws, it is a huge glow-up from the webseries in almost if not every aspect. The characters in the reboot have actual distinctive designs, personalities, and motives/backgrounds. All the supposed heroes are heroes, and all the supposed villains are villains. The characters, including the main 6, have actual flaws/conflicts/insecurities, leaving much more room for them to grow and develop as characters as opposed to them being perfect do-gooders from the get-go.
I also like that the heroes and some of the villains have normal lives outside of their superheroes/supervillains lives just to some balance. Also, i like that the reboot isn't afraid to have some dark, creepy, and sad moments on screen as well.
All I'm saying is that DC Superhero Girls (2019) is a fun show that deserves more love for what it is. It's really a shame that it got cut short in 2 seasons.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Something pretty cool when a reboot or revival of a old cartoon arrives is if the original VAs are able to reprise their roles. I know there's the issue if the VAs are too old but in some languages it kind of vary, I'm from Spanish Latin America and some of the shows you mentioned managed to do it in their dubs:
Ducktales managed to bring back Scrooge's original VA; Animaniacs brought back the VAs for Yakko, Wakko and Pinky, but the Brain's VA couldn't because he disagreed with the payment WB. offered him
In the Arnold movie they replace almost everyone from the main cast, though in the case of Helga's original VA she retired years ago; Rocko brought almost everyone, though sadly Rocko's original VA passed away years before the movie was announced; Zim also managed to bring back almost everyone, same with the Rugrats reboot
For Clone High only Abe's original VA came back
Futurama is a funny case because the original Neutral Spanish dub cast was replaced in its fist revival, but for this new one they brought back the original VAs, save for Zoidberg (who was the only one who remain in the first revival) whom VAs is now retired

The quality of a reboot or revival always depends on how much effort was put into it, plain and simple. Were the writers relying on nostalgia to win audiences or did they actually try to give a fresh new take on a beloved property? Thats why Ducktales 2017 and Rise of the TMNT were so fire. Sure everyone was skeptical at first (especially with rottmnt) but the boldness and the creativity of the writers to do something new is what gained audiences, not just nostalgia. Unfortunately both Ducktales and RotTMNT were unjustly canceled because big studios don't care about fresh new ideas and taking risks and just want something to make a lot of money really easily.

Honestly a reboot will always be a product of the time it was made so in my opinion a good reboot stands on the line between being faithful to the original and being new enough to bring new people to the franchise

I agree with you, the "animashuon" community focuses too much on the negative aspects of reboots like TTG or PPG 2016 and not enough about ones that are actually spectacular like Thundercats (2011), DuckTales, and the Beavis and Butthead revival from 2022 which is my personal favorite. Beavis and Butthead season 9 is a masterpiece and the movie where they "Do The Universe" perfectly set up this new universe, there's even some episodes where the duo are middle-aged losers on welfare and its absolutely hilarious! Nobody talks about it enough...
