Good lens, one remark, when you have to shoot a bit "closed" to get better results, I don't see that as a f/1.5 lens. Even though you can ignore it. The classical Leica/Zeiss stuff costs a lot, because of this. As far as price, versions and size/weight you can't beat it. I still prefer my 50mm 1956 Summilux though that comes in retail at 1.500 Eur of course. Very good video Matt !!
Thanks Eric! Agreed, there is no point buying a 1.5 lens if you have to use it at f2 (Just buy a cheaper smaller f2 lens)(normally)(not in this case). This lens is excellent wide open from about 2m but I didn't realise that til I sent it back and that only equated to about 1% of my images. (As you know lenses with a floated element are better up close, like the Summilux ASPH).
Really wonderful and scholarly, well researched and well presented. No one else comes close. You are the master of this genre and I would wager you are doing alright with the photography. Thanks for the time and effort. You deliver so much information so well without sounding pedantic. Cheers

Matt, always like how you break down the information for each lens. I believe you gave a bit of wrong information about the original Nokton LTM (the one you saw at Flint and sold for $4K) - it is actually from the 1950s. Not many people know about this lens. I happened to know because I recently got a Voigtlander Prominent camera with the original Nokton. To clear things up, there are a total of 4 versions of Nokton 50/1.5 throughout the history: (1) the original Nokton (7 elements in 5 groups, "7/5", of course no aspherical element) - made for Voigtlander Prominent cameras introduced in 1951 and was considered the sharpest fast 50mm for about a decade (well, the main competitors Leica Summarit and Zeiss Sonnar aren't exactly famous for resolution). Voigtlander also made a few in Contax RF and LTM mount in very low quantity. While you could get a Prominent mount version for under $800, the LTM version (the one you saw at Flint) usually sells for a few grands. The Prominent version doesn't have focus mechanism because focusing is done through the camera, while the LTM version has a focus ring. (2) Nokton Aspherical by CV in both Nikon S mount and LTM (6/5 optics with, I am not sure, 1 or 2 aspherical element). The LTM version looks similarly to Nikon S version and they both have red "aspherical" engraving in the front. The LTM version should sell for under $600. (3) Nokton Aspherical VM by CV ("Version I" as you and many refer as, 6/5 optics with 1 aspherical element). To make things more confusing, CV decided to base its exterior design on the original LTM Nokton (1950s) and make them sound like reissues, while the optics are in fact very different. (4) Nokton Aspherical VM "II" by CV - the one you review here. Hopefully this helps anyone who wants to know a bit of the Nokton history. BTW I have some photos of the Prominent Nokon on my instagram if you are interested.
Thanks and sorry for confusing the older models. I own the LTM + Nikon S and yes they are the same. I don't have the Prominent version but may have shown it in one of my Flints videos in the past. (Great guys at Flints!). Thanks for the details for others to read, much appreciated.

Interesting. But I know the reason why the Summilux has a better performance on short distances. Peter Karbe (the chief of lens construction at Leica) included the floating element exactly for that reason. But I know that the current Summilux is very expensive! But you will found floating elements only on more expensive lenses.
Thanks Alexander, yes 100% correct re the floating element. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the video. I didn't notice how good the lens was at mid distance until after I returned it as I shoot everything up close!
Thanks for the info. I was using EVF cameras too (SL and CL) so that shouldn't matter I think. I still like the lens and looking back at my CL images some look sharp. I can't remember if they were at f2. I do love the size. (See next video I mention it)
Would u recommend this over the canon 50mm f1.4 ltm when shooting on M mount? It feels like voigt are recreating/copying canon ltm lenses in modern tech
Hey Matt, please review TTartisan 50mm 1.4 ASPH lens. I heard it's a very good lens even compared to Summilux but only cost $300. Would love to see that lens compare to this Nokton as I'm still debating which one to get. Thanks!
Fantastic review Matt, I’m looking to purchase a compact fast 50mm for my Leica MP. If money was no object, which one would you choose? The Summilux or the Nokton? 🙏thanks
Thanks! The Summilux is not compact at all. If you need the best lens to shoot sharp images at 1.4 get the Lux (see recent fast 50 video for clear confirmation), if you stop down anyway I like my Summarit 2.5 for size. If you’d shoot mostly at subjects away from the camera the Nokton is also great. (Just not close up)
Nice! I have the LTM (with M adapter) 50 1.5 Aspherical, and it is probably my favorite 50mm; I used to also have the 1.1, but it is heavy and bulky (although now it would work fine on the SL!), so I sold it.
Thanks, great to hear you have the ASPH LTM, I only got mine yesterday! I found it by accident researching the video ha. I look forrward to using it on the SL :)
Do you have back focusing problem with the LTM lens? Mine back focus to about 1-2 cm. I don't know of it's the metabone adapter I use. My M8 rangefinder is accurate bc I don't have any problem with native lenses.
Did you test on different Cameras this lens? I have this lens and bw is super on EOS R but colour has sometimes magenta corners. Maybe you use this on lumix or nikon z?
Would a bad Ltm to M adapter make the Lens backfocus? Mine 50mm f1.5 Ltm backfocus to about 2cm on most apecture. My M8 rangefinder is accurate though, bc when I put the CV 35mm f1.2 on, focus is good at f1.2
Sorry to hear Michael, hmm, it’s a pity you don’t have another camera to test it on. It could be a bad sample. It happened a lot for me buying new Zeiss Sonnar 50 1.5 (I gave up in the end)

Own a Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 Nokton lens for my Leica M3. And it does not look like your examples. Maybe my chrome/all metal lens is made differently than your examples. Think when you mention so many lenses (Leitz or Voigtlander) the video comes across as confusing than clarifying. As you get into your explanation, your results/sharpness differs from my experience.
Thanks Norman, this is the latest version. It sounds like you have one of the many earlier copies. I enjoy the 2000s dated one that was released with the Bessa cameras.

Would u recommend this over the canon 50mm f1.4 ltm when shooting on M mount? It feels like voigt are recreating/copying canon ltm lenses in modern tech
This is much smaller, canon has more character, I use it
Hey Matt, please review TTartisan 50mm 1.4 ASPH lens. I heard it's a very good lens even compared to Summilux but only cost $300. Would love to see that lens compare to this Nokton as I'm still debating which one to get. Thanks!
Thanks KK, if I get the opportunity I will yes
I had ttartisan 50mm 1.4 asph and sold them, and bought voigtlander 50mm 1.5 II. Super small, light and better on longer distance
@@ccanoee yes great at mid-far 👌🏻
Interesting lenses and review,Thanks.
Thank you!
(Just not close up)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks for the input!
@@AZ-um1oz I have 2 more mass 50mm videos coming but these are vintage 50s (LTMs)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom looking forward to them! Keep up the good work 👍
@@AZ-um1oz thanks I’ll try! / plan to :)
Such good info...thanks Matt...you are the MAN!
Thanks Ronald!
I'm wondering how it compares with the Summilux M 50mm f1.4 V2 E43 ......... :)
also... this is an ASPH lens?
Lux is wayyyy nicer ;)
..see Lux Pre video
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Oh really? damn.... OK thanks!
@@michaelc4917 not at all, and I am using it with an inexpensive generic adapter, I think I got lucky!
Hey Matt, thanks for this video. What do you think about the Voigtlander 50 f/3.5 Heliar V 4? Could you do 1 review of this lens? Thanks.
Hi Eric, I own 2 copies of that lens, it is on my todo list! Stay tuned!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom that lens is very sharp and with the clickless aperture might be a great lens for video.
@@ofeykalakar1 thanks, agreed! I use Leica R lenses for video currently
Did you test on different Cameras this lens? I have this lens and bw is super on EOS R but colour has sometimes magenta corners. Maybe you use this on lumix or nikon z?
Hi I used on my Lumix S5 and I didn't see any issues from memory. I don't own a Z body sorry.
Matt, did you have the rectangular metal "frame" removed from the viewfinder on your M3? It looks round to me.
Hmm interesting question! No i've not done anything myself but i've never noticed either
How does it compare with the Leica Summilux f1.4?
Summilux is still optically much better wide open
Hmmmm .... Are all of these images of models in the video ones that you took?
Yes I never share others work in my videos or blog
Welches Objektiv soll ich kaufen? Leica Lux 50 oder Voigtländer Nokton 1.2 oder 1.5 VM ?
1.2 if don't mind big, 1.4 for the best but costs more money, 1.5 II for small and if not close to subject
Hey Matt, how would you compare this lens to the Voigtländer 50/1.2 VM Nokton ASPH on a SL2 (aside from the size/weight aspect)?
Hi Peter, have you seen the 1.2 video? If size is no issue get the 1.2
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt. Yep! I've watched it a couple of times. I was just curious if you've changed your opinion of the 50/1.2 since your review of the 50/1.5.
@@Peter-df1br the best part of the 1.5 is the size for me. 1.2 offers more for me. if you want to setup a Zoom call to discuss in details before you click buy I do this a lot for others now - MrLeica.com/zoom
Super helpful. Thanks!
Thanks Lugen!
Great video, as always. A question: is the photo on 10:18 in Uzhhorod? :)
Yes!!! Very good :) I visited many times.. I hope to go again sometime but travel is long from UK (24hr door to door!)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom wow, that's really surprising! That's my hometown :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I've owned the older LTM version of the lens several times, but sold them in the end. They are quite nice, but bulky. I was considering the newer one in your video, but the close up image quality really looks bad... Guess I'll stick with my Summicron DR.
@@a4grtu yes I have the older ones too. Not sure if I had bad copy re. Close up, I’m tempted to try another one at some point as the size is perfect.
@@a4grtu I’ve been coming since 2010 :) ..my previous job meant I came there for work
WOW! Looks like amazing lenses! I had to look twice....thought you photographed Marilyn Monroe! LOL.
Ha thanks Lucy, yes that's her day job.. she came to me to get photos done to kick it all off.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Excellent work!
What is your favorite 35mm and 28mm lens?????
Big question! Depends on the application. See my playlists for 28 & 35mm lenses reviewed so far and I have at least 3 more vids to come on this topic. Stay tuned!
😊
Thanks!
As always, thumbs up / Ulf
Thanks Ulf!
Baby ....too much info and comparison in heavy English accent..I already gone to hospital for head examination...
Haha sorry Kevin, yes my vids can be quite info heavy. I hope you recover!
