- In today’s episode, Greg and I review the Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5 Nokton for the Leica M mount. The lens was only released in 2020 and retails for below 1.000 Euro.
The Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5 Nokton replaces the earlier f/1.8 Heliar Classic lens in the Voigtländer line-up. The Nokton competes with Leica’s significantly more expensive Leica APO-Summicron-M 75mm f/2 which retails for 3.800 Euro or the Leica Noctilux-M 75mm f/1.25 which comes in at 12.150 Euro. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, the 7artisans 75mm f/1.25 costs around 500 Euro. Just looking at the specs, the Nokton promises to offer incredible value for the money:
12 aperture blades, a minimum focusing distance of 0,7 meters, great build quality including a metal hood, an optical construction with aspherical lens - all for less than 1.000 Euro.
Greg recently purchased the lens and we took it out on photo walks in and around Würzburg shooting Fujicolor C200 in his M4 (guessing the correct frame lines) and Adox Silvermax in his M6.
Gear used:
Leica M4 and M6
Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5 Nokton
Films used:
Adox SilverMax
Fujifilm C200
Scanned with different setups in this case:
Fujifilm Frontier SP3000
Epson V500
Pentax K1 with 50mm f/4.0 Macro

Excellent, as ever. Particularly good to see you back in this troublesome time.
Thanks for your kind comment. And yes, it feels good to release a video again. We are actually working on quite a lot in parallel here in the background. :)
I hadn’t known that you reviewed this, but I’ve owned this lens for just under a year and I concur-stunning performance!
Thank you for your comment. Glad to see we are not alone with our assessment.
@@AnalogInsights I find ed often agree. Do you have a site showing your work?
@@fourcarb Unfortunately not.
Very good review of the lens. Also, always enjoy seeing glimpses of Wurzburg.
Thank you so much for your comment. Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Glad you guys are back.
Another excellent video! So glad to see you and Greg. I hope everyone is well.
Nice vid .... great to see you guys back at it!
Excellent and realistic rerview. Your video reports are very informative and please keep them going. Vielen dank!
It was exiting to see a new upload from you guys. I love the calm atmosphere in your videos. Voigtländer make great lenses. I do not own a Leica, but I own two lenses I use on my F3. A 40mm f/2 Ultron SL-II and an APO-Lanthar 90mm f/3.5 SL II. Both are great alternatives to native lenses.
Good to see you back.
Great that you did your test and your video here in Würzburg! If you would like to do some tests in a very well equipped studio nearby - you are always more than welcome. I think you convinced me for the Voigtländer!
Your channel is a great dictionary... Right to the point with a great outdoor view that I really enjoy!
happy to see everyone back & 📸 again. Very insightful presentation & gorgeous images always. I have the 25mm 0.95 Nokton (on Pen F) and it’s an addictive joy to 📸. The 75mm is enticing to have. Really appreciate all your thoughts, insights, honesty & , of all, passion for photography. Btw, I noticed & admired the quality of your clothes as equally as your passion for 📷. ✌🏼& 📸
Mounting the lens wearing gloves left me feeling nervous!
That apart, I loved it. Your style and content really works so beautifully, as always.
Haha, thanks for your kind comment. :)
Thanks for the review.
I have a M10M and this is definitely next on my list!!!
That brown leather vintage bag is the 'icing on the cake' as far as Greg's outfit is concerned! Very nice touch. I love the vented lens hood of the 75mm nokton. I like how narrow the vented slots are, making the hood quite compact as far as diameters go. Alas its a little too small to engineer fit on my leica 50mm f0.95 :-(. Maybe a future 90mm f1.5 nokton hood may work. I want it for that vintage look! Again great video as always, very classic and professional!
Thank you so much for the kind comment. And sorry to hear that finding a fitting hood appears to be a bit difficult.
@@AnalogInsights thank you, for now I am getting a cheap Chinese 67mm hood with a 60mm-67mm step up ring to adapt to the leica noctilux. Will see how that looks!
Great video again as always! How about testing the Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 75/1.9 in one of your next videos?
Danke für den tollen Film. Gute Info und super Motive. 😍
I'd love to own a Leica, but couldn't afford it...neitherways, i like it very much, to see a new Analog Insights Video here, Max. It was a long time..without Update. Keep the channel growing. Wonderful Review, as always.
Grab the lens(and an M-X) and pop it on an Xpro. You'll be good :)
@@walkingaphoto1086 No. I own the X-E1 since Release, and also X-T1. Good enough. Someday, would come something different. ;)
Great work as always. Compositions are excellent. :-)
Although discontinued the Leica Summarit 75mm f2.4 (2.5) could have been mentioned, too. A highly underestimated lens from the Leica lineup. Apart from being“just” a f2.4 lens the rendering comes close to the famous 50mm Summilux ASPH.
Thank you for your comment and mentioning that lens. Good call. :)
Got one.A very very good lens, terribly underestimated. Compact, sharp, especially efficient on sphérics subjects.
Great info after such a time
I never knew the purpose of vented lens hoods until today. Thanks.
Great review, I got one recently for my Leica SL type 601 and it is a fantastic pairing. Very easy to focus, very clear. At f1.5 it can produce very dreamy images which are sharp, but has a vintage glow which I like. At f2 onwards it behaves like a modern lens. Even pixel peeping it produces amazing images, very little CA. Sunstars aren’t that strong, disappointingly for me. Can produce interesting flare which adds character, but this is easily controlled / avoided, so a neat feature if you want to experiment.
Yes you are back
Pentax FA77/1.8 is legendary also. 75mm is a good FL :-)
Very very tasty lens, but displaced on my M shortlist by the Lanthar VM50 now
I have a Fuji Xpro2 and was thinking about getting one of these. What are thoughts on it? I have not committed to buying it yet, but wanted other options for the camera than the 35 and 50 I have now.
Thank You for the review. Did is saw this correct, has this lens been coded?
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video. Thanks
Some of the b&w portraits seem to have low contrast. Is it a characteristic of the lens or the film?
No, these are just our scans. The Adox SilverMax does have a really nice dynamic range and was scanned in a way to bring that out. Depending on the photo, I added more or less contrast afterwards.
Ahh Leica and LoFi I’ve come to the right place!
Did you find any focus shift across the range? Was hearing from some people that at more full body length that the lens would back focus…?
As you can see we had photos with minimum and maximum focusing distance. I couldn ´t see any focus shift, independent which camera we were using. I am very satisfied with this lens and haven ´t regret my choice.
Best regards, Greg
@@ianthomas465 for sure, thanks! It’s that mid-range that I was told people were having issues with but I’m hoping it was either poor rangefinder technique or maybe just a bad copy.
Favourite reviews ever
Hi, nice review as usual but you didn’t mention the Summilux 75mm f1,4 that is one of my precious belongings. I have no idea if it beats the Voightländer in image quality but in wins in cost😬, I love it!
Yep, another great video ✅
I am TORN between this or the 90mm 2.8 for my M6, which would be easier to focus between the 2 lenses? Thanks in advance.
As hinted at in the video, you can purchase the viewfinder magnifier to make focusing easier for either case. Yet, a 75mm lens should generally be easier to focus correctly than a 90mm.
The Leica M6TTL with a .85 viewfinder would be a good match for the Nokton 75mm f1.5 lens.
You are right and I am looking for one for quite a time. Unfortunately the prices raised significantly within the last months. Life punishes those who are late.
Cheers and best regards, Greg
@@ianthomas465 I checked eBay & the 'cheapest' M6TTL .85 was $3588 US. YIKES!
The Voigtlander Leica VM Mount Lens Adapter is compatible with the Sony E-Mount Camera.
Did one of the photos show part of a statue of a fox pretending to be a bishop? I recall a statue like that in Europe.
Nice one
Maybe this video will finally help me sell my Computar 75mm f1.4? It is much cheaper after all... 😎
great overall review thanks, but tbh the scans looks quite horrible and don't do the film or the lense justice
We are still working on the best way to scan our negatives. But you are right - the images are significantly better as the scans show.
Best regards, Greg
i hate de waiting to start song :)
Lieber Max !
Yes, a nice review of what appears to be a very capable lens. But the tonality of the b/w photos is mediocre, if not lousy. Too flat, too grey. No real black and no real white. Is this due to the quality of the scans or are the negatives not exposed correctly?
I was very confused as well...the script does not match the pictures at all. Other reviewers have highlighted this lens' contrast/microcontrast (Peter Coulson supposedly accused this lens of being "Too modern, too perfect,") so presumably the negatives and/or scanning was the problem.
I think the Leica summicron 75/ f2 would perform better. Second hand about 2500 Euro. It's worth it.
It might perform better, but they're really nowhere near comparable in terms of price. And with a used lens you not only need to find the model you want, but a good example of that model.
a handsome guy
Photographing with sunglasses on? No. Never.
You’d better leave the sample photos unedited, as all that has been done is just to ruin the gorgeous Leica look and rendering turning those into crappy looking colors and weird color shifts.
Black & white conversion is also not among the strengths of the authors. Apologies for being so open & honest.
好久不见🤣
Hey, don't be a stranger.
All the images shown shot with the 75mm are so bad that IDK why anyone would buy it.
The elephant in the room is why would anyone want 75mm? It’s quite close to 50.
The logical next step from normal is 85 or 90.
25mm in the tele range just seems not enough.
Yeah, unless you're in a stadium or using macro, it would be tricky to shoot an elephant inside. Just let it roam outside and take shots there - 75mm will be perfect :)
If you like to use a 35mm as your “normal” lens, as many street/documentary photographers do, a 75 is an ideal complement to it. Also, 75 is a nice focal length for headshots and tightly-framed portraits - it gives you a better perspective than a 50, but still keeps you close enough to the subject to communicate easily.
