I have this lens. I use it on my M10R and SL3. Hard to nail focus on M10R. Much easier on SL3. I love the quality of pic I get. Highly recommended at this price point. I normally use the 50 Lux for indoor portraits and often the Voigtlander for outdoors portrait.

Beautiful portraits in black and white. You are a real artist. I love the rendering of this lens but I am not a fan of it s aspect. As a Nikon shooter , they just delivered a Z version which looks like the old pre AI Nikon with big distance ring in metal. It should perfectly fit my Nikon Zf that I love and gives fantastic opportunities to focus with manual lenses.

I use the Voigtländer 75mm F1.8 Heliar Classic. I bought it for head shots and concert photos, since my 90mm tele-elmarit is kinda slow for that type of work and only focuses down to 1m. Very happy with the Voigtländer! It does the "classic" rendering very well and sharpness is great in the middle wide open. The bokeh is absolutely wonderful, much like older Leica lenses.

All of my primes now are zf.2 mounts including the Voigt 58/1.4 and 40/2 along with some Zeiss zf.2 glass. Voigt glass going forward will be m-mount get adapters for both the Z6 and SL2S.

Well, with the illustrated warning about the flare, I would certainly consider this lens, based on this very informative review of yours, Matt.
As things stand, a 90mm Summicron which I thought been stolen, reappeared, so I don't need this Nokton. (..sigh of relief ) .. but I refer others to this review. Thanks again. 👌

There is a 75mm f2.5 Heliar LTM version from Voigtlander, which is discontinued now. It can be found in Japan. I think that one produces very classic looking photos adopted to M240.

Matt, I finally got my copy of the 75mm nokton today, take some portraits, came home and opened Capture One to check the results: I'm absolutely impressed with this lens, it has the character of the sony 85mm GM (amazingly smooth bokeh) but with some extra punch wide open. I also own the CV 50mm 1.2, but even being one of my favorite lenses and FL, it is not close to this one, imho. The colors, the transition from in to out focus areas, the sharpness are just so good. I wonder if Voigtlander has any other lens of this level or we are talking about the best of the best here. Thanks for your video & recommendation.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад +1

Thanks Fed and great to hear you got a copy. Yes if you see my best 50mm Voigtlander video (called best lenses of 2021) the best was this 75 beating all the 50s I tested. It is the best for me. I need to use it more now! Thanks for commenting vs. Sony 85, good to you and I imagine half the size and weight! (I tested a Milvus 85 1.4 in Spain last week on a trip to Spain. I'm not sure if I will ever share the images as only a quick test but man it is so big and heavy! Crazy.. though nice photos!)

Thank you Matt for the review of this lens. I have the previous iteration the CV Heliar 75mm (I think discontinued). 75mm is a between the 2 focal length. I use this lens in some cases. but I am more found of the 90mm. For my main focal lengths i.e. I am using Leica glass 35-50-90mm for my less used focal lengths I am using CV i.e. 21-28-75mm. Regarding rendering these CV lenses are superb and affordable. I played around with the 50mm Nokton f/1.5, 50mm Nokton f/1.2 and 50mm Zeiss Sonnar f/1.5. 50mm is my favourite focal length. My favourite CV is the 50mm f/1.5 so far. The only gripe I have is the knurled focusing ring.

My favorite lens for head & shoulder portraits on my 35mm Nikon SLR has been the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4.
When I bought my Leica M6, I bought the Leitz 90mm f/2 for head & shoulder portraits.
My 90mm f/2 has never fully satisfied me as a portrait lens because f/2 is too slow and the lens does not do well at close focus distances.
Should I seriously consider replacing my Leitz 90mm f/2 for the Voigtländer 75mm f/1.5?

I had a Voigtlander 21mm color scopar (I think it was) on a Leica 262 and it had terrible purple bands down the side of the photos. 1. Would that be the lens or the camera? 2. I trust that this lens wouldn’t. I’m considering going back to a Leica M so your input would be valuable 👍🏼

21mm on most M bodies dies this purple edge. Less on newer bodies, not on film. It’s a digital-wide lens issue, esp. Voigtlander 15,21mm

I have the f1.8 Heliar Classic which is significantly longer than even the 90mm Summicron (the Canadian one without a tripod bush, a bit shorter than yours) which limits the use it gets.
I'm (almost) tempted to make the switch but I'm not entirely convinced by the handling of the Vintage Line 35mm though the 75mm looks less cluttered and the focusing ring less hard on the fingers.
I wish Vogtländer would stick with the knurled focusing rings with red/white scales and the bolder engraving that features on most of its VM lenses it wasn't broken and it looks good too.

Beautiful rendering, but mechanically imperfect. The grease in the focusing helicoid is too thin (I guess this is the reason?), so when pointing the camera too far up or too far down, the focus starts to creep! Probably not an issue when shooting handheld and still gripping the lens, but a royal PITA for tripod shooting. By the time you've recomposed after focusing, you need to focus again. Fortunately this doesn't happen with the new 40mm f/1.2, which sees about 98% of my use; I only bought the 75mm f/1.5 for variety, and evidently I don't really need it.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

I also used it for portrait but I had to use the Visioflex EVF on M10P in order to be able to focus correctly. I also tried it on the CL but a bit long .

Hey Matt, great video as always! I've been considering this 75/1.5 Nokton, but I may opt for the Leica APO 90/2 instead. From the sample images shot with this Voigt that I looked, I feel it is somehow a bit flat lens, lacking to provide a good sense of depth and 3D rendering that Leica and Zeiss lenses are giving (especially the 3D pop of the Leica APO 50). I also was absolutely unable to find whether the 75/1.5 Nokton does include floating elements in it's optical design (seen quite a few guys complaining from it going way too soft when focused at closer distances).
Do you know whether it does include FLE, or not? What's your honest opinion on the tonal gradations, which contribute for the "juicy" image with good sense of depth? I know you finally bought this Voigt.
I still believe the Leica APO 90/2 might be a better choice (I know it is more expensive, but this isn't something that we buy every day). I took the APO 90/2 for a test and it's been absolutely mind blowing. How do you compare it to the Voigt 75/1.5? One of my photos with the Leica APO 90/2 can be seen here: flic.kr/p/22gefcd

Pointless video. There is no "best" lens - regardless of the type of photos to be taken. The best lens is the one that works for what the photographer is trying to achieve.
I suppose the lens caps really contribute to the photos someone takes. As for focal length, it would help (when comparing the size and weight of lenses) to say what the sensor size is comparative to the lens. On Nikon full-frame cameras the lens sizes do tend to be larger, especially when compared to a crop sensor, or an Olympus camera, as examples. What is the actual focal length in terms of when this 85mm is in use? For instance, a 50mm lens intended for a Nikon full frame camera will have an effective focal length of something like 70 or 75mm were it to be used on a crop sensor Nikon camera.
