    A huge thanks for a very thorough and honest review with some great shots. For me my perfect “50” arrived from Robert White on Thursday, the Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 which is working out fabulously on my SL, particularly with its 0.5m close focus. I do think if I can be so bold as to suggest, you need to do a part 3 of the review and compare the Voigtlander 50 F1 with its super fast peers. All the best, Marcus

    I have the Voigtlander 50APO that I generally keep on my Leica MA. I think I"m going for the 1.0 version for my M10M. That thing is a low light monster on its own, but with the 1.0, it likely could almost see in the dark.
    I could readily use the attachable view finder too, which would help on those tough to get 1.0 shots.

    The samples showing the camera clearly show that the 50/1.2 has far better bokeh at f1.2 that the 50/1.0 does at f1.0! The f1.0 shows more business and the f1.2 shows more smoothness...That is a very counter intuitive result I know, given the relative apertures, but the samples show that is the case.
    So the lens to get is the f1.2...Not just because it has better bokeh, but it because it has more contrast than the f1.0 too.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

    Matt, not sure you’ll see this since the video was released a while ago, but to me it almost seems like subject separation is more defined with the 50 1.2 in many cases. Did you find that to be the case and, if so, is it maybe because of the falloff differences in the transition zone? I want to pick up one of these lenses - and I’d like a 50mm that renders similarly to the CV 40 1.2.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

    Great review as always, one question remains for me though. Will you be buying it or sending it back, and if your are getting it, what would you think it replaces in your current collection?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад +3

      It was only on loan as the distributor needs it to loan to others. I think my Nocti has more character but it would replace that if I could mention 1 lens. I have the Lux instead of the 1.2 so I don’t ‘NEED’ it currently.

  • @g0ld3nb
    @g0ld3nb 2 года назад +2

    Hi Matt, great video, perhaps one of your best - watched it twice! Even more so than the excellent quality of the lenses, what really struck me was the beautiful lighting in your shots (I particularly liked the most the ones with the umbrella/X60).
    2 Questions:
    1 - Do you think the result would have looked very different with flash+softboxes?
    2 - For someone shooting Nikon, close range portraits like you usually do, do you have an opinion on the 58mm 1.4G? Particularly compared to the cheaper 1.4 AFD/G. I have the feeling you might prefer something from voigtlander ;)
    Thanks in advance, keep up the great content, love this BTS style.
    Cheers,
    Henrique

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад +2

      Hi Henrique, thank you! Yes I think probably one of my better ones too as I slowly learn the game/ get more kit and learn how to edit/ get clips to include.
      Look from the light is the same with flash. The mod is what gives the light look. But LED means can SEE the light before you shoot so you'll normally do better work/ pose them better. (Can use studio light too for the same or flash like AD200 I use). (With model light).
      58mm 1.4 beats Nikon 50G for sure. I had and sold the 5014D (not great) 5018G (sharp but not interesting).

I finally got a 50 lux for my Leica M-A given that I will use the camera almost exclusively for portraits. The 35mm decision looks harder to me: the lux is crazy expensive and (for portraiture) I only see two options: the CV 35mm 1.2 v3 or the CV 35 ultron 1.7. Maybe the first is too soft at wider apertures for film, maybe the second will give an extra punch. Your take is always welcome.

I really like the way the 50/1 obliterates out-of-focus areas; objectively there might not have been much difference vs. the 50/1.2, but I suspect I'd feel a bit more confidence that I would like the results if using the 50/1. Unfortunately both are out of bounds for me as I'm using a Pixii now and it doesn't tolerate lenses that are too fat!

    My problem with really expensive glass is when there is little real world difference to budget glass. I have a Nikkor 50mm f2 AI which is incredible, and it cost £40. I also have a £4000 Zeiss Otus 55/1.4 which really IS a lot better. For something many times the price I MUST see a big difference. Not thousands to see a pixel-peeping marginal benefit.

    Quite staggering tha You are. not able to seing and making up a strong mind about witch lens you prefere, you who had all it needs to see up close. I seem to see on my tiny smartphone that the f1.2 produces les vigneting and importantly smoother bokkeh (and I rely on You: "better contrasz". Sharpness and microcontrast, sun stars distortion. flare. coma, chromatic aberatiins, symetry, you all did not investgate). And you belief that anybody could be right to pick the f1 for reasons of often too dimm light ???? (I can't imagine any such reasoning to be soundly determinating between these two lenses. Simply title this : A film about me.
