Well-done presentation! I recently took delivery of my 50mm f/1 Nokton, plus a 21mm f/1.4 Nokton, part of my plan to conrtinue to postpone acquiring an expensive M10 Monochrom, by feeding more light to the M Type 246 sensor, as another hot Texas summer means more low-light shooting.

Nice review. I was about to pull the trigger on the Voigtländer Nokton 1.0, but I went with the Voigtländer Nokton 1.2 instead. Greetings, which lens has earned your most glowing endorsement? Noctilux M 50mm f0.95 - TTArtisans 50mm f0.95 OR the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.0 asph vm. Thank you
How does this lens compare to the Nokton 1.2 asph ? I am testing the 1.2 out on rental and I'm impressed with it. It's 900 US (without hood I presume) which is half the price of the 1.0 and a bit lighter. Have not tried the 1.0.
Hi Andrew. By any chance would you review the Light Lens Lab 8 Elements 35mm F2? It’s a clone of the first 35mm Summicron that has garnered popularity among enthusiasts.
Hi Andrew, Thanks very much for this very informative review. I like listening to your reflexions, so I left you a subscription and a like. My question is whether you've had a chance to use the Nokton 1.0 on film. Probably you're an exclusive digital shooter though, aren't you? I just thought that a lens like this could nicely supplement the Summicron 50 DR I'm using with my M2. But maybe it'd be an additional treat rather than a meaningful addition anyway.
Thanks for the support, I actually shoot more film for personal work and I did in fact mount it on my M2 and M3. I wanted to get this review out sooner than later and I didn’t bother including the film shots. It’s 3D qualities and contrast worked magically on XP2 400. If you’re a bw shooter this really would be a stunning lens to pair with your M2.
@@GenericPhotographer Wow thank you! I'm indeed primarily a bw shooter with M2 on 35 and a Linhof Master Technika on LF. I'll seriously consider getting one of these once they're available. Here in Berlin they're still on preorder at the moment.
I have both (and 40 f/1.2 Nokton). They are similar. The f/1 is slightly sharper at both 1 & 1.2, it also has significantly more vignetting. Both have wonderful pop and beautiful rendering wide open. Fair to say the 50 f/1.2 is easily the sweet spot at half the price and smaller size, but my f/1 is going nowhere and I love it.
I really really REALLY REEEEEEEEALLY wanted to be able to justify the expense of this lens but to me the bokeh is just ... for want of a better word ... "nervous" - I"m not sure if that's the "bokeh fringing" or CA but it's like an Andy Warhol scene with a shadow-type image to it. I don't see it in all photos but when I see it, I can't un-see it. Which is a shame because, like I say, I was hoping to be able to justify the expense (even though it's an MF lens). But thanks for taking the time to make this review - very helpful :)
My personal opinion, as the owner of 0.95, etc., if you are looking for individuality, it is better to use the old Noct 1.0 or Canon. Or the Chinese Noctilux - because of the price.
A real superb review of what is clearly an amazing lens. Haha, u could hardly stop smiling; and that in itself is a wonderful comment on the lens. But you also talked about the Cons of the lens, which seemed pretty minor given its Pro’s. I hv to say it looked as if it was made for the Leica; which ofc it was, but some of those long Summicron lens looked totally unsuitable and to my mind spoilt part of the compact and lite appeal of the M11. // Thks, hv Sub’d.
My old 50mm 1.1 also had an black inner ring, so it may be a Nokton thing (My other 35mm 1.2 Nokton is the limited edition chrome model so I don't know when Cosina switched to black inner rings with some of their superfast Noktons, the 1.4's I know have chrome ones). It never bothered me because I my old Leica M8 pretty much requires an hot mirror filter if shooting color.
Good sir, I am a subscriber to your channel and I have a question - your answer to which I am hopeful will solve my dilemma. Simply put, if you could only have one - Leica Noctilux 50 f0.95, f1.2, Summilux 50 f1.4 or the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1, which would you select? And why? And I already own the Noct 50 1.2, and the 75 1.25 - but a Noct fan. I’m also considering the 35 f1.4 FLE II, but I’m not really a 35 guy. Continued happiness and success to you and yours. Be Blessed. Chaplain US Navy
Great review! Do you have any DNG files to share of portraits around 1-3m distance? I am keen on seeing why the lens produced. I will be thankful is you can share :)
It’ll have to be the lux. The f1 nokton is a great lens for work, producing effortlessly beautiful photos, but I still prefer the Lux as a total package.
Hi Andrew! I just want to ask about your opinion on this one and TTartisan 50mm f/0.95 If you looked closely to the photos created by these lenses ? Which one is closer to the noctilux 0.95 look? The TTArtisan or the Voigtlander? Since i want to get the Noctilux look without breaking my bank 😂 Thankyou so much, Andrew! 😁
Hey! Thanks for the comment! The Voigtlander has the contrast and, dare I say, outperforms the Noctilux in sharpness. It’s circumstantial when it comes to bokeh, the TT has better bokeh imho, but the separation isn’t as 3D as either Noct. I’d go for the voigtlander budget permitting, it’s got that glassy look that the Noctilux has, the bokeh can be a little more busy at times but it’s a remarkable lens with lovely character.
@@GenericPhotographer I’ll take the voigtlander then since it’s better than the TTArtisan in overall IQ. Thankyou sooo much for the information, Andrew! It helped me a lot with the buying decision. 😁
@@GenericPhotographer i recently bought one and very happy with the result, also OMG! It is so small compared to my 50 GM 😂 the sharpness is incredible yet it retains the characteristics of the lens at f/1. Totally worth the price. Thankyou for your recommendation, Andrew! Can’t do it without your help 😁
All of these large-body, f/0.95 to f/1.0 50mm lenses will block part of what we see through the viewfinder. We cannot change the laws of physics. This Nokton f/1.0 will, indeed, block part of the viewfinder, including a substantial portion that is inside the 50mm frame lines, but, to be fair, we should compare it to such lenses as the Noctiluxes, not to the smaller 50mm lenses, with smaller maximum aperture settings. For example, the f/0.95 Noctulux, and this f/1.0 Nokton, have virtually identical diameters, but the Noctilux is 75.1mm in length, while the Nokton is 55mm in length. I do not need to put pencil to paper, to realize that the f/0.95 Noctilux will probably block somewhat more of the viewfinder. The Noctilux also weighs substantially more than this Nokton. It was the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH that first drew me into adding the Leica M system. Later I added a 50mm Summicron, for the times I wanted something a bit smaller, and did not need the faster aperture, or other optical qualities of the Summilux. Later, I added an Elmar-M 50mm lens, for the times when maximum compactness was important. (All acquired pre-owned, in order to spend much fewer US dollars.) Finally, I allowed myself the luxury of buying a new 50mm M-mount lens, and decided that it would be this “Halo” lens, from Voigtlander. This Nokton does not replace or displace any of my other 50mm lenses; each has its role. In addition to its optical qualities, my Nokton directs another stop of light, into my older M cameras, which seemed to be a better fiscal decision than acquiring an M10-R or M10 Monochrom.
Most night pictures are interesting with good DOF, a 50mm is not gona give you night landscapes all in sharp at F1: - But for dark venues events, without flash, yes, it must be a plus...

Is there really artifacts to adapting this or other lenses? 😮
I have no use for fast lenses. They just make nonsense to me. BUT if I wanted one I'd go for the Voigtlander. The Chineseum lenses are false economy and the Leicas are too rich. Good to hear about the lack of focus shift, BTW. They obviously took the time to do this one right.
@@theonlinething1039 You think you're saving money but you're not. It's much better value to buy old SLR lenses. For a DSLR, no adapter is needed, but even for a DSLM, a good adapter is still cheaper than a Chineseum lens. I got a Pentax 50/2 recently for $25.
@@Biosynchro There is no 50mm f1/0.95 equivalent retro lens for Pentax or any other mount. The only ones are Leica and Canon, well and only the Noctilux is actually good. And if you're not into the retro look with the weird coatings, guess what, you gotta buy a modern lens.
What do you mean by “this is like a 80mm f/1.4“ like the look and effect of a certain aperture value doesn’t change depending on the field of view, does it?
The depth of field is similar. Divide the focal length and aperture of each and they’re pretty close. Obviously there’s more compression with a more telephoto lens, however the challenge of focusing is quite similar between the two.
It’ll rock on the Sony. Just be ready for decreased corner performance. If you get a voigtlander close focus adapter you’ll be able to bypass the minimum focus distance too!
Thanks for the review. It was helpful. I'll stick with my sumicron. I do not think i need such a lens for my Leica; i'll use my GFX and the 80 1.7 for shallow depth of field. PS: the only country on the planet that uses imperial is the USA; stick to metric! ;-)
Would like to see more night shots in the videos, especially different tones of light in different areas of the photo. most of your shots for this one are in the day time or inside. that's really what separates leica from other brands.
You didn't make me want to buy this lens. It's a really nice lens, but I'm just picky with bokeh and none of them are that great to me. I like an oldschool Planar/Biotar design without the new additional elements that correct a lot of aberrations but also get rid of a lot of the bokeh character making the bokeh bit too smooth and buttery for me. Love the build quality though!
Thats right!👍👍 i use planar and older distagon with canon, and they are so awesome!👌👌🫶🫶.. planar 50mm f1,7 cy t.. and distagon 28mm f2.8 cy.. that planar makes object jump out of picture🤪🤪👍
that CY Planar 50/1.7 is a classic, I've been using the 50/1.4 for many years now and still love it. It's gathering dust since I modified a Canon 50/1.2 LTM to have shorter MFD, but I'll keep it for when I move to Fuji GFX cause the Planar can cover that sensor and the Canon can't.
Im thinking about to get a m10/m10p.. but I’m Not sure if I need it 😂.. I have a Fuji x pro3 and a Sony a7iii. This just makes no sense, MF, expensive… it can’t do anything better than my other cameras. It’s limiting u very hard. But man I had it in my hand.. this feels so good in hand. It’s just this. I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️
how would you compare this to voigt 50 1.2 in terms of FC and bokeh? is the FC well controlled, do you feel the bokeh is harsher on the f1? im a m10-r owner in the market to buy a fast 50
Can’t speak for the 1.2 since I haven’t used it. I found the f1 to be a nice blend of classic and modern with some definition in the bokeh on busy backgrounds, never got too busy but it was something to note.
Hmm the bokeh could be the only thing it could improve on. Calling it garbage is a bit too extreme, are you sure you’re not referring to his 50 f1.1 review?
COIGTLANDER IS PRONOUNCED 'FOTLSNDER CORECTLY ! f_1 with digital is lessuseful, averagely, than with film. its almost a 'special effects' lens -wafer.thin DOF. - so sharpness is comprimised often. a paid-for promo for sure.

The gold Konica Hexar just chilling in the background… will we see a video on that?
Haha you will definitely see a video on it!
I find myself wishing I had opportunities to use this lens. btw...the redhead is really very attractive.
I have the Nokton 50/1.2 and its totally awsome lens. Wonderng if they renders similary.
Haven’t used the 1.2. I’ve heard good things. Guess I should try it to see!
Thank you for this review, where can I see the simples of pic with this lens with Sony body ? This girl maybe have some examples? Please 🙏
Great video as usual!
Thanks Jesse!
Love that lens!
Fantastic video
Thanks ✨
Your camera strap is very nice. Do you mind me asking what it is?
Want. My VM 1.2 is probably as heavy as I want M glass to be. But, still want.
Be Blessed. Chaplain US Navy
damn.... making me want this lens!
Great review! Do you have any DNG files to share of portraits around 1-3m distance? I am keen on seeing why the lens produced. I will be thankful is you can share :)
Desert island 50mm - this one or the Lux ASPH?
It’ll have to be the lux. The f1 nokton is a great lens for work, producing effortlessly beautiful photos, but I still prefer the Lux as a total package.
Hi Andrew! I just want to ask about your opinion on this one and TTartisan 50mm f/0.95
If you looked closely to the photos created by these lenses ? Which one is closer to the noctilux 0.95 look? The TTArtisan or the Voigtlander? Since i want to get the Noctilux look without breaking my bank 😂
Thankyou so much, Andrew! 😁
@@brainz406 my pleasure, you definitely won’t regret the decision, plus it’s the smallest of the three!
How is it adapted to Sony mirrorless?
Thanks for the great review! One question I have - does it obscure the viewfinder window?
not necessarily to get even Noctilux since I have summilux 50 ver. 2 . I prefer compact lenses and easy to focus
Hello. As it is a pretty large lens, does it appear in the viewfinder partially blocking the view ?
Greatings from France
I have no use for fast lenses. They just make nonsense to me. BUT if I wanted one I'd go for the Voigtlander. The Chineseum lenses are false economy and the Leicas are too rich.
Good to hear about the lack of focus shift, BTW. They obviously took the time to do this one right.
This lens is definitely a refined product. It’s fascinating to see what they’re capable of.
False economy? What do you mean?
@@theonlinething1039 Why stop at 0.95? 0.7 is your money melon.
How is the viewfinder blockage?
Quite bad as you’d expect. Focus and recompose
great video.
Thanks!
This is possible to mount it to the Sony A7R5?
It’ll rock on the Sony. Just be ready for decreased corner performance. If you get a voigtlander close focus adapter you’ll be able to bypass the minimum focus distance too!
有这只镜头跟铭将50/0.95的对比吗
Where's the smell test and the wind tunnel test?
That’s the long term review
Post more videos on Leica M stuff!
We’re can I buy one no one has them
Really? Have you tried Camtec?
how is this vs TTartisan 50mm 0.95?
I think the 50f1.2 Nokton is a way better choice than this. This f1.0 is extremely niche.
When you’ve got the need for speed
way better choice in what way? both these lenses are bad choices for my specific style and use-case :P
@@KNURKonesurin every way shown in the video.
Thanks for the review. It was helpful. I'll stick with my sumicron.
I do not think i need such a lens for my Leica; i'll use my GFX and the 80 1.7 for shallow depth of field.
PS: the only country on the planet that uses imperial is the USA; stick to metric! ;-)
How much does the lens intrude in viewfinder?
Would like to see more night shots in the videos, especially different tones of light in different areas of the photo. most of your shots for this one are in the day time or inside. that's really what separates leica from other brands.
Good point, I’ll include more next time 🫡
You didn't make me want to buy this lens.
You’re combination of technical knowledge combined with creative expertise is highly valuable. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks for watching!
Won't to get one to adapt to my Sony 😊
Im thinking about to get a m10/m10p.. but I’m
Not sure if I need it 😂..
Could I shoot this with my bessa r3m? Or Leica film cameras ?
Of course you can. Mounted it on a M2 and M3 with no problem.
Can it be installed on m3? I see the len barrel is quite fat and near the release button of the cam.
Can confirm, it works fine, it’s just a bit of a pain to remove. You can jam your finger in there and twist.
The voigtlander is not good proportioned on the M body.
I can’t see the crazy good colors you see. In fact that is where the Leica lenses shine. Much more pleasing and natural. No I won’t buy this lens.
Large aperture Lenses are so stupid for OVF Cameras !
Your review makes me wonder if we used the same lens. I’m with Ken Rockwell, it’s garbage.
Hmm the bokeh could be the only thing it could improve on. Calling it garbage is a bit too extreme, are you sure you’re not referring to his 50 f1.1 review?
@@GenericPhotographer Yes its the 1.1 which Rockwell is ref`ing to .
@@absonus figured, couldn’t find anything from him on this newer lens…in which case we clearly didn’t use the same lens.
"for sure" lol
No thanks, prefer my Fuji
Never understood why not add autofocus? It's not that hard
Speak less, show more
No.
Comment less, listen more.
Can it work on film M cameras?
