I shot Leica M mount film cameras for years before moving to Digital Canon Cameras and then Fuji X mount cameras. This Thypoch lens is making me want to go return to Leica or any other full frame camera. Thank you for your honest reviews!
In the photo of the couple sitting on a bench, the Summilux has a much more 3D pop and better microcontrast, the colors in the Typoch are muted. In the other portraits, the Summilux also has better separation. Optical glass is very expensive as are optical coatings. so don't expect any miracle, Manufacturing in China is cheaper, but don't expect anything for free. If it's only worth $800, that's its value, not a gift, and even with that price, Typoch logically makes money.
95% of the time you’re not gonna see a difference. I could only tell a difference at medium differences and when I go looking. On film it would be even more difficult to distinguish. You’re definitely right about nothing being free. Leica sources and produces some incredible optics and their lenses are unique for that. Just take the color accuracy, micro contrast, sharpness and lack of loca in the images as an example. It’s projecting perfect colors constantly. I can’t remember where I read it but iirc the most expensive element in the Summilux lens group costs around 1000$ …so that’s more than the Thypoch lens itself 🫣
Thanks for this review and comparison. I'm wondering if I can get a Zeiss 50mm f2 ZM and get most of what the Thypoch offers for less $, in a smaller package.
The lux still has that extra magic in the bokeh and sharpness at medium distances that I can still justify. If I was starting from scratch I'd just get the 50 Simera and a steel rim lux/sumicron and call it a day.
@@GenericPhotographerNice review. I just literally picked up the Voigtlander 50 2.2 and then this drops. I am having a hard time telling difference between it and the Summicron loaner I have on hand. But I had really wanted a Lux and now questioning should I return the Voigtlander for the Simera. Would it be crazy to get both. 😅Together they are still $400 less than the used cron I just passed on.
The lux is sharper, and on my A7rV and M10R it is apparent but only slightly. I’m using both lenses interchangeably and having a hard time distinguishing them. So that’s what matters most for me
The lux and apo cron are so similar at close to medium distances it’s wild. The apo wins at landscapes/infinity. I filmed the footage last year but my wedding season got the best of me.
The extra magic of the lux is still there. That said I’m using both on a wedding tomorrow. Honestly if I didn’t have the lux I’d be happy with the Simera.
Kinda have mix feelings about Thypoch, they basically copy the optical formula of the 35/50 lux, in one hand it makes it more accessible for the general user, but on the other hand, it feels bad to support another Chinese company copying other designs rather than coming up their own.
I see what you mean. They’re not completely identical optically but very close. And their design is 100% unique. I don’t have too much of a concern for the optical similarities, especially since there are even a few advantages going for the Thypoch, namely the 14 blades and a de-clickable aperture. Lens light lab is definitely the one that I’m looking at when someone says something about knockoffs.
It’s an interesting question. I feel like TT Artisan is maybe the most egregious, where they’re copying Leica design language (though I almost prefer that aesthetically because it doesn’t clash with the camera). Thypoch may have similar optical formulas, but the designs are unique and at some point do optical formulas become generic? The double gauss design started with Zeiss (I think), but has been widely used by others. Light Lens Labs is an interesting one, because they’re clearly making copies but not of current production optics. To me that’s a unique offering because it’s an alternative to Leica lenses that have become too old or too collectible to be daily users.
For the sake of the comparison, using a SL2-S retains the Leica sensor and image quality while guaranteeing consistent results/not relying too heavily on the rangefinder. I don’t tend to have an issue with nailing focus with 50 lux but might as well remove that variable from the equation
Why not compare this lens to the voigtlander 50mm f1.5? If you can afford the lux, you won't be buying a Chinese lens... if you can't afford it, you look at better priced options like all the offerings from voigtlander (wonderful proveen lenses) or the zeiss f1.5. No one who can afford the lux will waste money on this chinese copy, and unless it's very cheap i rather go for voigt or zeiss. Simera is really pushing this to all youtubers...
Happy to compare it with the Nokton but this Simera is the only modern, FLE, aspherical 50 1.4 other than the summilux for the M mount. If there’s a lens to compare the Simera with its most definitely the Summilux. The c sonnar isn’t even in the same category. Tons of people have been using the Simera’s since they came out last year and I’m not hearing anything negative 💁♂️
@GenericPhotographer floating element doesn't necessarily make it a better lense, and if it's going to be used on a rangefinder, not that it will make much of a difference... Yes, the zeiss is more about the look it produces. I guess if this lens goes for cheap it's a great option..
@@AIP404 exactly that’s what I set out to find out with these reviews. If you want the best experience and calibration it’s always going to be with Leica but variety is the spice of life and competition will only fuel further innovation.
No matter what folks say, it's not a Leica Lens! I've seen this crap all the time. If you cannot afoord new lenses, look at good old Leica! If still no, get a different camera, Nikon,Canon,Pentax. Their lenses are equal, often better!
Um, no? Leica is the only game in town for rangefinders. Leica is not *just* their lenses, obviously. These lenses are 95% as good as Leica lenses. Where-as no other brand offers even 1% of the rangefinder experience. Also, grow up. It looks absurd to say "You MUST pay 5x as much for 5% more quality!" Then position yourself as the arbiter of monetary gatekeeping 😂😂
At last bought a Leica M240 used, I cound not justify buying a leica lens so went for a Voigtlander 35mm ultron which is excellent. However, after a year I want a Leica 35mm steel rim. It makes no sense. With Leica nothing makes sense. Its like falling in love.
I've been using the 28mm Simera since May and it's been my favorite lens. I'll definitely be picking up the 50mm Simera.
Glad to hear! I’m loving the 28mm as well 🙌

Thanks for watching! There's nothing quite like Leica, come on back in, the water's warm!
Great review as always! Straight to the point and you know your stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙌
Very interesting. As always. Thanks for this.
Thank you for watching, glad you liked it 🤝
Im tripping. It’s Groundhog Day! 🎉
😵💫 You didn't see anything

Different beasts, Zeiss colors and a simpler design is definitely valuable in itself.
Great review good music loved seeing you outside in the real world and very good quality production. Thank you for changing that awful intro.
I wonder how this lens would stack up against the LLL 50 Elcan
There’s no focus shift for starters 😬
If I may ask will you be selling the 50 lux now? If not what’s the decisive factor in keeping it?
The lux still has that extra magic in the bokeh and sharpness at medium distances that I can still justify. If I was starting from scratch I'd just get the 50 Simera and a steel rim lux/sumicron and call it a day.

Have you compared these lenses to the current Summilux 50? I have the new lux and M11M. Can the Simera keep up with the M11M sensor?

how about vs the 50 apo summicron. I remember your video on that

Why is focussing with a 1.4 50mm on a rangefinder tricky? I don't own one I just thought it's kind of the most liked lens for the Ms?
For the sake of the comparison, using a SL2-S retains the Leica sensor and image quality while guaranteeing consistent results/not relying too heavily on the rangefinder. I don’t tend to have an issue with nailing focus with 50 lux but might as well remove that variable from the equation
Hang on didn't I watch this yesterday
You did! I just scheduled it to come out today instead ;)
This is like saying a VW Polo is an affordable Porsche…..at the end of the day, ITS NOT THE SAME.
If you mean a flat 6 swapped, manual, rear engined Polo... then absolutely!
@@GenericPhotographer I think the better analogy is a C8 Z06 as compared to a 992 GT3RS :)
