Quite a bit of viewfinder blockage, but honestly much better than I thought it would be.
For the way I shoot size and weight are more important than lowlight, so I am happy with my f/2 lenses and Zeiss 50mm f/1.5.
This looks like an amazing balance of all the factors that go into lens design. Voigtlander is keeping up their great work!

Nice, I think yours is the first video I've seen on this lens (other than that early german video with a severe lack of sample images). I think you got the lens weights mixed up in the video btw and you mention comparing at f/1.4 and f/1.2 (which is f/2).
Anyway, it seems to be a very nice lens, but I will stick with my Summilux ASPH. If I was in the market for a fast 50 though, I would probably still go for the Nokton 50mm f/1.2. More than fast enough and a bit more practical.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Thanks Renzsu and sorry for the small errors. If you want faster than the Lux I’d skip 1.2 as not much faster. The Lux is still brilliant so happy with that. For something less perfect wait forever the TTA 5095 video :)

Great video Matt. I used to shoot the Nikon 50mm 1.12 wide open a lot on a FM3a. I had no problem nailing the photo through the generic Nikon viewfinder. If i get one of these and put it on the new M11 how many shots do you think i'll miss? Im not a fan of attachments as i tend to knock them off and prefer to shoots with what i have. Is it that critical to get the attachment cheers.

Hi Matt, the Noctilux f0.95 is very special, but it's also a damn liability walking around with it every day. I did this for quite a while but recently replaced it with the Voigtländer f1. As you say, it does a good 90% of what the Noctilux does and is much sharper wide open. Importantly, I feel a lot more comfortable walking around with it every day. I also have the incredible 50lux. I usually use 2 cameras, one film and one digital but both with 50mm lenses. This lens partners well with summilux and I have no preference which camera I use it on as it's great on both. I shoot mostly on the rangefinder too and was delighted to find that the Voigtländer is as accurate to focus as any of my Leica glass, wide open or otherwise.

PS. I'm not wide-angle guy... I'm already owner the SL 24-90 and SL 50 Summilux for my jobs, but now I'm looking for something more affordable and lighter than the SL Lens ... what you recommend ? thank you for your attention.

    Matt,
Thank you so much for this quick review. As always your views/reviews get to the point i.e., is it worth a shit? LOL These days Voigtlander is doing things Leica will not, and doing so at affordable prices. I realize Leica is constrained by their dedication to making the absolute best but I can't help but wonder if they actually are? Not sure I agree with you with regards the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic lens. I absolutely love my copy. It's like I get two lenses in one. Soft and dreamy at f/1.5 to f/2.8 and very very sharp stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6. In spite of its single coating the contrast stopped down is rather excellent.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Thank you for this excellent quick review. It has not convinced me to buy the Voigtlander 50/1 but I am seriously considering it.
    Don

      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад

Thanks Don! I mention the 1.1 rather than the 1.5. I like the 1.5 but I usually only use lenses at or close to wide open so I never saw the stopped down sharpness.

Hi Ted, I know what you mean. The 1.0 has less uniform bokeh which for me with give more interesting images. It’s closer to the f1 Nocti in that regard compared to the other end of the spectrum, say Sigma 50 1.4 with perfect round less interesting bokeh.
The f1.0 Nokton gives old lens vibes / character in a new lens..That might be the punch line of my full video. Watch this space as more testing still to do.

Defines "Concise" and to the Point- Thankyou. Mine arrived this week, focus is perfect on my M9. I use a 1.25x finder, no problems with focus across range at F1.0. One point: the front element protrudes and some care should be used for filters. I found that Tiffen filters could be screwed in safely, but Nikon filters- with glass closer to the rear of the filter- could not. I put a drop of lens cleaning fluid in the middle of the filters and screwed each in. If the fluid transferred- stopped screwing in the filter. I will be using with the M Monochrom as well. ANYWAY! Hope this helps!

Is this officially Voigtlander’s most expensive lens
I still prefer the 50f1.2. It’s smaller and lighter and it’s awesome. These lenses are a very specific niche use. You never want these lenses too clinical. Part of the Leica charm is the slight glow wide open. If you correct them too much they become soul-less.
You seem to have a good relationship with VL. Can you ask them why they have never released a tiny 50f2 Ultron black on brass like the 28f2 II? 🤷🏻‍♂️
I’m buying 4 the moment they release it. Who needs this giant thing. We need a 50f2 Ultron! That way you can have a whole Ultron family. The 35f2, 28f2, and 50f2 Ultrons.

Very important to see how this compares with the Leica Noctilux F0.95. Comparing a modern aspherical lens with FLE to a spherical lens designed in the 1970s is not a valid test. How does the new Voigtlander compare with the current Noctilux F/0.95? Should I sell my Noctilux and go for the Voigtlander?

@@ptrcksln The 1.0 is heavier, way more expensive, has a bit more intrusive vignetting than the 1.2.. but it's also a tiny bit sharper and gives you a tiny amount of more bokeh. The bokeh of the 1.0 isn't necessarily more creamy, it honestly seems quite nervous compared to the 1.2 - if you compare them directly, there's quite a bit of doubling going on in the out of focus areas with the 1.0. The 1.0 renders with a slightly more yellowish color cast, looks nice for portraits though. All in all, don't worry about the 1.0, you've already got the goldilocks lens.

we should stop comparing the FL (focal-length) and start looking at the Aperture (DoF)...so the leica has a 0.95 opening and it will give you 0.95 DoF, the Nokton have a f1.1 opening but it will give you f4 at the max on DoF the rest is light coming in up to 1.1. hens the reason for the DoF scale on the lenses...now..the Nokton 1 is better then the 1.1 simply because it has a f2 on the DoF where the 1.1 is f4 on the DoF..
Note! High end lenses wil have a shorter working distance and the f stop will be 1:1 for axample the Nokton 50 is 1.1 but has a DoF of f4.....is not 1:1 DoF.
