The Voigtländer lenses are very impressive. The 35mm APO is my next lens. I own the Voigtländer 50mm F1.2 it’s very nice…lanthar just came to late for me… I do travel and landscape shots and hands down my Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 is my favorite lenses. I use the Leica equivalent in the SL lens profiles, seems to work perfectly. Spectacular.
I learned so much about photography with a used X-e1 and 40mm vm 1.4 and 35mm vm 2.5 pII setup years ago. These are wonderful lenses. I’m actually going back to a similar setup for my travel kit bc I feel the Leica gear is too expensive for me to travel with and I was just as happy with the results back then.
Thank you very much Matt. Your reviews are outstanding. As a matter of fact, because of you I got a Leica M11-P and a 50mm Summilux new version, and the 50mm voigtlander APO and the 21mm color skopar and the 35mm f2 APO (Voigtlander of course) and the 75mm 1.5 (Voigtlander). I trust your reviews.
I think this 50 APO instantly made every entry level 50f2 obsolete. (Also possibly the Leica APO unless you have a money tree growing in your back yard). After shooting the ZM for a while I now notice here also that it’s not so much lack of sharpness (god knows the ZM is so sharp), but the harshness of the ZM. I would say the ZM is more for things and not so much a people lens. It’s the harshness the reason I will be changing the ZM for the APO. I’ll upload some shots to my channel if I get the chance and explain why the change. I love the ZM, but it’s definitely too harsh for skin and colors. In B&W is fantastic though. If you want a warmer and more gentle tone then definitely go for the APO. Here you can see in your camera test shots, it’s very obvious in the leather of the camera. You can see the leather in the ZM shot looks so harsh in comparison to the APO. It may not seem like a big deal in these test shots, but it is a big deal. The more you shoot the ZM the more it’ll bother you. You’ll spend more of your time editing trying to get rid of it. If you shoot architecture and things then it won’t be such a big deal and you’ll really love the ZM. I recommended the ZM as the best first 50 for the M, but now with the APO, they’re so close in price that I need to change my recommendation. I would now say, Either get the 50f1.5 II (if you need f1.5) or just get the APO.
Thanks Carlos, yes that makes sense and I did find the ZM too harsh for portraits years ago. I can confirm I also got the APO recently and returned the ZM (after this video). I will use it for film and will do a follow up video once shot enough samples. Good to hear you are converted too! Great minds think alike!
I have read and seen several reviews of the Voigtländer (V are pronounced like F) 50mm 2.0 APO Lanthar, It is an excellent Lens ! I have got the 35mm 2.0 APO Lanthar and the 65mm Macro APO Lanthar Lenses, I am not a fund of 50mm focal length Lenses, I like any Lens shorter or longer in focal length, but I think for those who have a APSC format Camera a 50mm will be ok. All Voigtländer APO Lanthar Lenses are excellent, sharp, very nice colors, very nice bokeh, for the price there are no competition ! Amazing that the 60mm with a Lens design from the first half of the 1970´s still can be compared to modern days Lens designs !
Renders brilliantly. Though, FM said that the M version did not adapt so well to non-M. I'm still inclined to try it myself. The recent Laowa 85mm double-macro APO images look very beautiful as well, despite being a far less ambitious/perfected lens. I think I like the look of APO generally. Thanks again for the report and imagery.
Great lens for sure. Still -- one should stop it down in order to avoid vignetting, at least to 2.8 or even 4.0 -- when there is something like a plain blue sky in the background for instance. Regarding 3d Pop : yes - that lens does have a bit of that, but compared to say the Zeiss ZF 35mm f2 it is nothing too special, that Zeiss has an impressive 3d pop when using it wide open !
I have just bought this lens in Poland on a Black Friday deal for £670 equivalent. I’ve only gone out a couple of times to test it but I cannot get over how sharp the corners and edges are at f2! It’s like nothing I have experienced in an M lens before. It’s a little long for my liking but the weight is ok. I better start saving for the Noctilux f1 and then my 50mm focal range is sorted :)
I had this lens, and my experience is same as yours. I sold it however to get the Zeiss otus 55 mm which is even sharper, stupidly so. I don’t do Portraits, just minimal stuff, hence the trade. But if I went back to Leica, I will pick up the Lanther any time. I loved it. Thanks mate
Using Sony now and have the E mount version.. it is a fantastic lens. I prefer it to the Summicron and maybe Summilux for the noticeable sharpness but Summilux still wins in my opinion. It's the bulk/size of the lens and F1.4 over F2. If I don't have to carry it around the Sony 50GM is better than them all. It's a huge lens but the keeper rate is by far the highest. The thing just doesn't miss perfect focus on that eye.
I had to replay the video several times as it's quite difficult to pay attention to listening while looking at the photos :-P ... now for the lens, this is quite remarkable. I own the APO-M 50. Though honestly I still need to learn how to use a 50 as well as you do. But if I had to start again knowing what I know now, it's hard to justify the APO-M. I'd get the Zeiss ZM planar for sharpness, all around use, and size (which I have today). However for portraits, it's difficult. Assuming cost is not an issue but rather a wise use of money that brings a unique lens render, which one would you get - Nocti 0.95, Nokton 50 1.2, or Summilux-M 50 1.4 ASPH?
Thanks sorry for the faster pace! People dont watch unless something sparkly to look at so yes i'd need to what it twice too, once for images, once for listening to the info ha. (Really). 0.95 is similar look to ASPH, see my MrLeica.com blog. I used that lens. I prefer my f1.0. If you want sharp wide open get either Leica, if you want glow option get 1.2 (see that vid for samples). ASPH is best all rounder I think.
50mm f1.5 Sonnar missed 🥲! Great review!! Top 1 Lens review channel for me. Having the Noktons21/1.4 and 35/1.2 II, which would you choose? -50/1.5 Nokton II -50/1.2 Nokton -50/1.5 Sonnar C I shoot Nikon Z6
Thanks! I used to shoot a Sonnar. I sold but I miss the character sometimes. It looks like you don’t mind bigger lenses if fast so get 1.2 (sharp and glow options)
Hi Matt Thanks to you I’m now a Voigtländer junkie! Considering The 50 apo or the Nokton 75 1.5 for street Along with my Ultron 28mm And Nokton 40mm 1.4 On the M10 Or both?
Hey Gary, haha me too! Sorry about that. I have APO and 75, both amazing. For me 75 is too long for street but it's their best portrait lens (See best 3 lenses of 2021 video). APO is great do everything (and sharp) lens.
Did you end up keeping the 50 APO? or decided you're covered with the 1.2 and 1.5? I have the 1.5, loving it. The AP0 is great as it's so clean when you need it- but do I need it? Or does the 1.5 really cover all?
I bought Voigtlander 35 Apo lens and sold it back the next day after testing it, lost 30pct of it's value, then I preorder Leica Apo Summicron 35mm, for 8x the price and when I got it I use it almost everyday with my M10M. My 35mm Lux went to M10R. Voigtlander APO just as sharp, as good as APO M , but it is soo big blocking my viewfinder, and I could not bear that shooting for hours. And for that tiny form factor plus close focus capability I am happily pay 8x the price. Between a trophy and a consolation price is a matter of a NOSE ahead.
Sorry to hear. Yes I love small lenses too so it is too big for me. I use smaller Voigtlanders for 35mm, the new Ultron f2 (see video) offers great value but isn't as corrected as the APO.
Thank you, Matt! I agree on the size of the APO on an M camera. I was debating hard and long what to get as 50mm for my M11. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so the Leica APOs were a no go. I was between the Nokton 50mm f1.5ii, the ZM Planar 50mm f2, the ZM Sonar f1.5, and the APO 50mm f2. In the end, I settled for the APO as a do anything lens. My reasoning was getting the best results out of the 60 megapixel of the M11. In the end, I would not mind having all the 50s if I could :) Keep up the great work! PS: I really like the videos where you include footage of you using the lens rather than just narrating and showing pictures. I think you're an amazing photographers and we can learn a lot from you, much more than reviews on gear. Just my 50 cents.
Hi Elie, thanks! Yes I think the APO is the best non-Leica choice for your M11 to make use of the sensor. Thanks for the feedback. Yes i'm still very much a photographer vs video guy so I often get caught up in the photo taking. If you've not found my Patreon yet I share lots of BTS videos on there showing me in action with models and out and about with info overlay. You might enjoy it. (Linked under videos).
Im on the market for a sharp, well balanced 50 for my M-A and M3, I have my heart set on the Zeiss Planar and the regular Summicron, which would you say was a better overall performer with film, for street, portrait ect.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah thanks Matt, the APO's performance can not be denied despite its size and imo ugly style. If its not too much bigger than the Zeiss I might go for it.
I bought the Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4 Nokton for my Sony a7III a couple weeks ago and after reviewing my photos, I bought the 50mm f/1.2 Nokton also. I have used manual lenses on 35mm film cameras for most of my life, and I prefer them for creative control. Working in manual mode on the a7III is needlessly complicated compared to using a mechanical SLR from the film era. I've discovered that since I went digital, it's been more difficult to get the photos I want when relying on my camera CPU to make decisions for me. It's a welcome relief to know that once I set aperture and focus on my Voigtlander lens, it's impossible for my camera to change my settings before I press the shutter release. I own the large and heavy Sony 50mm 1.2 GM, so I know what optical perfection looks like, but I'd still rather use these relatively small and light Voigtlanders. They are very well built, my results are great, and the sun stars are killer too.
At 3:53 pausing and looking critically at the f2 comparison the left side looks sharper on the apo and the right side looks sharper on the lux…. Still haven’t found anything better enough to swap out my 50 cron, not that I’m looking though.
I was doing more testing for myself today, many many 50s, Lux is still King, Cron R did well and 2.8, Cron DR good but lower contrast, ZM is good but others are very similar and with nicer bokeh. Older Nokton 50 1.5 LTM ASPH did well, Canon 50 1.4 LTM ASPH and best value lens still the Nikon 50 f2 AI - beats the Cron easy at f2.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You are a rockstar! Your photography is amazing and the effort you put forth in your equipment reviews is clearly evident. We all appreciate your hard work!
Having Summilux 35 1.4 … I’m questioning my need of getting a second Leica lens … My Lux is awesome but expense. Thinking installing this 50 on my M11, I’m questioning if I should go with 1.2, 1.5 or 2… For sur I don’t need the speed of those lens I’m just trying to debate … Character vs Sharpness… (and thinking that I’m enjoying my lux 35) We are always attacked by sharpness, but is it the real win that we need to look for .. Any deal breaker that you could see from your eye ?
Hi Matt, I bought a voigtlander lens from Robert whites, got discount with your name...the Leica M-P type 240...can you set the iso, shutter speed etc..too Auto ?? and just focus manually ?? or do you have to set everything manually ?? Please let me know soon if poss. Thanks, love your videos
Hi John, thanks. Yes the camera is manual focus and gives you the option of full manual exposure controls or A mode on shutter dial for auto exposure (like most cameras)
Re the lens hood for Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar f2.0 as well as the 2/35 and a Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm f1.5, original lens hood from respective manufacturers are very expensive. I have purchased a Haoge LH-ZM35 Bayonet Round lens hood on eBay for about less then halve price of Voigtlander and Zeiss ones.
Yes, I've been hearing a lot about this lens recently so I'm tempted but I love my Voigt 50mm f1.5 (bought on your recommendation) as it has character in abundance and these days I'm buying character over sharpness. I'll try it out and take a look. As a note, I tried my Voigt f1.5 first on my Fuji X-T3 and it was only OK, but when coupled with my Leica SL it really came to life. I found that really interesting.
Thanks Mike. I agree character is much more important for me too. The APO is perfect but sometimes less perfect is more interesting! Thanks regarding Fuji 👍🏻
Buying a SL2S but first just purchased this lens based upon this review and others. All of my Voigt's to date are zf.2 mounts so I bought both a M to Z and M to L adapters for this lens. Love your work Matt. Happy New Year!
What about against your old Summarit f/2.5 or newer 2.4? They are still $1500 but would be interesting to see where it fits between this APO and the 'Crons.
I tried to limit the video so not endless testing but I love the small Summarit. A keeper for sure. I kept and sold my v5 Cron. Not bought APO yet. It’s too big.
Not a 50mm, but the 40mm 1.2 is a nice lens if you're looking for a combo. It gives you a slight variation in focal lengths, but more importantly, I personally prefer how the 40mm nokton renders over the results with the 50mm. Whichever way you turn it, VL is really bringing the fight to Leica with their latest releases. The past few year they have put out so many fantastic lenses, that other than brand name, QC and size/weight differences, there is little reason to go with Leica. Again, I am biased because I've had one of my Leica lenses with them for servicing and their customer service is beyond bad. They take forever, fail to honour their own warranty claims and take months to do some basic work (mine is as simple as tightening a basic counter ring to resolve a wobbling inner assembly, which with the right tool is literally a one minute job, yet they took nearly 3 months last time and are going on 2 now. The issue developed within 4 months of buying the lens new and within half a year after the "fixed" it. On both occasions they have charged a service and shipping fee!). Anyway, end of rant, grab a VL 50 apo, it really is that good!
Hi Anton, I can't remember exactly, I think yes some at f2 but i've not check verses other 50s specifically. Look for sample images for others too as a gauge. (I only had it to test so it'd gone back now).
The two APO lenses excel at focusing at infinity at F2 in the corners, world best performance there. But we have to ask ourselves what chances are we need extreme corner sharpness at maximum aperture for infinity focused photos. For every other applications, there seem to be some alternative options do better or at least on par.
Thanks Frank! Yes I don't need that for portraits hence I've not both either so far, but they are excellent at what they do, no question. (Next video is something softer!)
I'd say that it gives landscape/architecture shooters a good head start for sharpness in the corners. Maybe you're shooting at a 4 or 5.6, but your corners are only getting better at that point instead of merely catching up to the center's initial sharpness. Also, the distortion is non-existent at any stop. And Matt says that this is not a portrait lens, but I disagree. This seems like an ultimate coal miner portrait lens!
Thanks Matt . I have a question 🙋🏻♂️ are you familiar with Agfa cameras? Or I have a very nice old impressive Agfa camera that I would like to send to you as a present to try it.
Thanks Mohammad, yes I have a Agfa Billy Record II 6x9 folder. Nice cameras! It is very thoughtful but you don't need to send me any cameras. (I don't get time to test many of those I own!) :)
@@Rawa2ful I will try to visit Germany next year as I have quite a few asking about workshops. If you follow MrLeica.Com I announce in the monthly newsletter future trips.
Hi Bob, I use a lot of non-coded lenses so often I don't use the feature. You can select the 50 f2 APO profile to get an approximate profile for the APO.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom But you must use an approximate profile for the Voigtlander on Leica M if you want to view the real focal image field in the rangefinder isn't it ?
I can see you are “adapting” this to a leica mirrorless, it is the same than adapting to a Sony?( a7iv- has no AA filter). I’m thinking on getting the VM version for my Sony since I order the new techart pro 9. Thanks.
Hello, i've no experience with Sony. I know in the past they were not great with M glass but maybe the new ones are better. (That adapter was mentioned a lot in the comments of last nights video!)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I have been using the previous adapter model for years, was clunky but good enough, these new model promise many improvements, check here. ruclips.net/video/OuYbUtd7iHU/видео.html. Also check the last video from YT “magic Wedding photographer”👍🏼
I got the 50 APO to getts slightly lighter alternative to the TT 50/1.4. However, I wasn’t too impressed with it for shooting. One thing that concerned me was falloff in the APO. It did seam to appear on some of your shots too. What was your experience as to that? I still prefer the TT over the APO for most things.
Thanks for spotting this Steve, it didn't sounds quite right as I remember the opposite. I looked and sorry those 2 photos are the wrong way around. Next 2 pairs are correct.
Matt, What are your thoughts on the VM 50mm 1.5 Heliar Classic? Looked through your channel and didn't see a video, but could have just missed it. Love your video's matt...
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the review on the Classic. I think i'm going to pick up the 1.5 MC II as I have wanted to do all along. I did own the TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 and though it is a very nice lens and pretty sharp it is big and heavy and I wanted to stay small and light if possible.
@@mwales2112 thanks no problem, yes it’s a great lens. I still might end up getting one myself ha :) If your in the UK get 5% with my discount code.. but from the time of written I guess you’re not!? There are links to Amazon etc but no discount sadly!
@@mwales2112 hey same boat, am thinking of the voigt 1.5 II also. I missed the chance to buy a 50 apo, thought it might be too perfect and big. So just wait out for the 1.5.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you very much for the reply, appreciate your input, what about for Street Photography ? price wise i can have both of them for the same price as I got a good deal on a Silver sumicron, so I am leaning towards the latter..
The distance scale on the lens barrel is basically unusable for zone focussing. Set the lens to f8, try to figure out how to align infinity exactly to f8 to get max depth of field at hyperfocal, you see what I mean. Not a great street photography lens.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Disagree. Take at a look at the classic 50mm DR Summicron and its distance scale. Also, the Voigtlaender 50mm Nokton 1.2. I zone focus plenty with both of these :)

I'm not up to speed on Nikon Z. If it is a premium lens (like Sigma Art series) it might be similar but if just a basic 50mm (like Nikon F "nifty 50s") I would expect the APO to be better.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt. The reviews are very good and it will be of value to include in any future comparison. Much appreciated. My understanding that it is not a simple 50 mm.
Wow, as always yr videos r so jam-packed with extremely useful info, tactical advice and beautiful images it seems always a waste of time watching other Leica users video’s….
Thank you Matt!!! I have been waiting for this review more than any other and it has really made my day. It's truly a beautiful lens (although I'm not a fan of the chrome ring they put on the CVs). Got my 50 APO-Lanthar a couple of days ago (Leica M). I'm terrified by it; it has the potential to expose the slightest shortcomming of the photographer. Use a high ISO, it will reveal it, slow shutter speed? Dang! Missed the exact point of focus? Are you blind? Not payng attention to your focus patch? My Epson 3800 printer can barely accomodate the M10-R prints at 300dpi. Wife watched me print at 22x17 with a disaproving look. Competing for non-existant walls already? (Wifey paints). Ask yourself if you can stand a tool to demand you perform to its potential. BTW, $1000 USD is not *_expensive_* Have you checked Fujifilm and Sony prices lately? Leica?
Thanks, ha yes this is a sharp lens for sure. Similar to the Leica 50 APO. I enjoy it on film to get a softer yet sharp look. Great for detail photos, less suited for female portraits

@@andreasd3346 well said, small lenses are better on RF bodies
I'm considering using it on the Minolta CL, but I’m curious if it will be problematic. The rear element seems to protrude quite a bit.
No it should be fine. Most lenses work on the CL. I have it.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great lens for sure.
Thanks! I remember seeing photos from I think the 28 ZF and they were really impressive too.
Wow great price!! Congrats. Yes it is excellent as a sharp f2 shooter, no question. Yes paired with a 'character lens' you have the best of both!
I had this lens, and my experience is same as yours. I sold it however to get the Zeiss otus 55 mm which is even sharper, stupidly so. I don’t do Portraits, just minimal stuff, hence the trade. But if I went back to Leica, I will pick up the Lanther any time. I loved it.
Thanks mate

Hi Matt, I’m between the 50mm APO and Nokton 1.5 v2. Is there too much difference between these two in terms of image quality?
If you want image quality get the APO, if you need smaller, faster, get the 1.5
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks!
Thanks Brian, yes the Lux is still the best at f1.4 but the APO is great/best from f2. I'm used to MF so these lenses are all I really know.

Hi Matt
Thanks to you I’m now a Voigtländer junkie!
Considering The 50 apo or the Nokton 75 1.5 for street
Along with my Ultron 28mm
And Nokton 40mm 1.4
On the M10
Or both?
Hey Gary, haha me too! Sorry about that. I have APO and 75, both amazing. For me 75 is too long for street but it's their best portrait lens (See best 3 lenses of 2021 video). APO is great do everything (and sharp) lens.
Did you end up keeping the 50 APO? or decided you're covered with the 1.2 and 1.5? I have the 1.5, loving it. The AP0 is great as it's so clean when you need it- but do I need it? Or does the 1.5 really cover all?
Yes I bought the apo. I don’t own the 1.2 or 1.5 v2. Really good for film & detail
Hi Matt, Great video! can you let us know what went wrong with your Leica CL camera? Is it an issue that applies to all CLs?
Thank you! The SD card jammed. I think it was a card issue not the camera so you should be safe. I have the camera back now.
If you've not found my Patreon yet I share lots of BTS videos on there showing me in action with models and out and about with info overlay. You might enjoy it. (Linked under videos).
Cant decide between 35 and 50mm.. so hard to choose the right m lens for my new leica
Yes both are nice. Decide based on how wide you see not the lens
Im on the market for a sharp, well balanced 50 for my M-A and M3, I have my heart set on the Zeiss Planar and the regular Summicron, which would you say was a better overall performer with film, for street, portrait ect.
Cron v5 is small. The CV 50 APO is sharper
Which would you say is a better performer with film, the Summicron V5 or the Zeiss Planar?
APO first, Planar second (wide open for purely apparent sharpness). Summicron v5 has a smoother look.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah thanks Matt, the APO's performance can not be denied despite its size and imo ugly style. If its not too much bigger than the Zeiss I might go for it.
Great review Matt! Always very informative.
Thanks Lucy, trying!
Thanks! Yes I’m a big fan of Voigtlander lenses as you probably know!

Thanks Jan, great tip. Yes I would do the same if I used hoods.

If you have the Leica 50mm APO F2, should you still consider Voigtlander 50mm f/2 VM ASPH APO-Lanthar Lens for Leica M?
No you don't need both.
Buying a SL2S but first just purchased this lens based upon this review and others. All of my Voigt's to date are zf.2 mounts so I bought both a M to Z and M to L adapters for this lens. Love your work Matt. Happy New Year!
Thanks Gary! Enjoy your new setup, it sounds like you’ll have a fun start to 2022!
Thanks, see my 40/1.2 video and see tonight’s new video for the new 50 APO!
Hi Matt, are APO lenses useful for Analog camera and B&W? Many thanks
Yes for sure! Film is "softer" than digital so the extra resolution helps.

Please correct me, if I am not right, but by samples it looks like it has quite a vignetting on fully open?

Matt, you should *really* take a look at how your videos translate into subtitles. Can you not write the subs yourself? Folks outside of Scotland (like me) have a hard time understanding your _vocalization._ There are _furriners_ (ole geezers) like me who depend on them to understand your _"English"._
Thank you. Yes the subtitled are not accurate, especially on these old videos. Sorry. I do write English written reviews on MrLeica.com so you can try that for most lenses (plus you get to see full res photos too)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComI can understand you just fine over here in a America lol

Testing a new lens on a sunny island with beautyfull female models.
What is wrong to be on the Isle of Skye during a rainstorm with old men?
I'd need the camera in a waterproof bag and a lens hood. Old men can look good for photos.
Oh no, there goes my tax returns. Anyways...
Ha sorry Toni :)
Beim Reden ein Punkt machen.Da kann keiner zu hören 👎🏻
