  • I went searching for a replacement for the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 Nokton on the Nikon Z6. Here is what I came up with.

Great video! Loved your personal stories about the 58 nokton. I have a similar kind of attachment to it. The nokton as well as a couple of zeiss zf lenses are the only reason why I have never fully abandoned the f-mount.

Same thing here, I really like my Nokton and my ZF classics, it is really a tough decision to give up F-mount. It is very difficult to adapte to Nikon Z because the adapter just add so much bulkiness to the lens and feel inbalance.

Hey! GREAT JOB! I have watched your review several times. Thank you. I have the Zeiss Sonnar and it's my favorite! I know you love Nikon (I did too) BUT I now use the Techart Pro AUTOFOCUS Leica M to SONY An adapter which gives me AUTOFOCUS with that little gem of a lens. I LOVE IT!!! I shoot the Zeiss 50mm 1.5 ZM on my Sony cameras for many years. I also have a Manual close focus adapter (many available for under $30 on Amazon-Ebay as well for when I feel like manual. I can not believe I now have autofocus on Leica M mount lenses on the Sony a7iii. It really is my dream come true. BUT again, thanks for the very human, caring review. I almost jumped at the Voigtlander 50mm 1.2 but now I know I already have what I need. (I did buy the 40mm 1.2 :)

I've read the Sonnar has strong field curvature along with its interesting glow near wide open. All of this adds to the rendering character. I put in a purchase for the 1.2 Nokton but the C-Sonnar has always intrigued me.

Thanks for this, I ended up getting the same Z to Leica adapter (but branded "Shoten" instead (still a nice brass helicoid), and a used Voigt VM 50mm f1.2. As you said they look amazing on the camera but do challenge the wrist a little. I feel the Voigt 58mm got a little hard done by in this video as you didn't mention a number of its inherent advantages over the other two...
It has electronic coupling, meaning the Z6 AUTOMATICALLY knows what focal length to bias the sensor stabalisation to saving diving into the menu's or worse if you have multiple manual focus lenses, getting focal length wrong!
The Electronic coupling also allows changing the aperture from the lens OR the body. Finally I think it may also bring up aditional focusing aids like the green box. Not sure on that one.
The 58mm looks clunky on that adaptor, but there are other third party lower profile ones out there and as the Zeiss gets a new adapter shouldn't the 58?? lol (admitily this may dispense of the electrical said contacts however)
The 58, is a 58mm which I think is a better focal length for shooting kids as its not easy to get close to them. I also just think it's a cool focal length.
Finally the 58mm has only one focus ring. Oh and it also has a lens profile in Lightroom 6.14!
I love all three lenses, I just wanted to show further that you can't go wrong with any of them.
    Cheers!

You might think I’m nuts, but I recently bought the TTArtisan 50/1.2 for only $89 for my Fuji XT4. Considering cost, there was very little to loose by trying it. It’s a copy of the Zeiss Sonnar optical design, also with 10 aperture blades of similar shape as Zeiss uses. It has click stops on the aperture ring, which isn’t always a given with Chinese lenses. It opens to f/1.2 vs Zeiss at f/1.5. Just like your comment, I like it best in that f/2 region. Another benefit is that closest focus is 0.5m versus Zeiss at 0.9mm. It’s small, but might be slightly larger than the Zeiss. Lots of people give it great reviews, and I would as well. For that cheap, you might want to give it a try. BTW, it has 3 set screws to loosen the focus collar to adjust the infinity focus stop, and I did do that successfully in 10 minutes with a few trial-and-error iterations. If you like or dislike it, it might be a video for your channel!

Not that it would change your decision based on your reasoning, but you might want to look into a 3rd party f-mount to z-mount adapter as well if you have other manual f-mount lenses. A few of the usual adapter suspects make them in the ~$50 range and they are significantly lighter than the FTZ, and also don't have the (infuriating indeed!) tripod mount.

Also the subject separation difference between f/1.2 and f/2 is pretty large. Different tools for different subjects.
