I sold all my Fuji lenses last year to go full on minimalist with X100F. I have since crawled back to X-T3 and XF35F2. But it was fun to try. I was tempted by this Nokton, but now I am sure that I will repurchase the XF56 f/1.2 - thank you for this review.
Threepwood 90 Although the X100 cameras are very capable, they are just not a X-Pro nor a X-T. They are for a very specific shooter and I found out the long way. I thought I was that shooter. @@angumotzfeldt3093 I can totally understand your point. It's funny how people who buy the X100 for its compactness , they end up buying the tele/wide converter. Ultimately they sacrifice in size and they spend almost the same price of an X-Pro + lens...
@@ilFreg I think the different camera lines can actually complement each other very well. For example when I went to Japan, the only camera I brought was the X100F and I loved it for being discreet, light and small, and very quick to turn on and shoot. But for my friends' portraits last week, I used my XT2 with the 56mm 1.2 and the 23mm 1.4 and also loved the shots I got. So I feel that you can have different cameras for different roles in your life. (If you have the money, I guess!!)
This lens overcomes nearly all of your complaints when mounted on Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras. You can get 0.26m close focus using the Yeenon macro helicoid adapter (the Yeenon adapter is incredibly high quality, equal or better to that of the Voigtlander build). The Fujifilm cover glass thickness of about 4mm is causing edge smearing and field curvature, affecting sharpness too near the sides, whereas the Nikon cover glass at 1.1mm is much better suited as it is closer to digital rangefinder cameras. I also suspect the Z cameras have more accurate color reproduction when processed in Capture One software with defaults... Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw produce incorrect skin tones with yellow/green overtones. I've shot about 13000 photos with the Voigtlander 50mm 1.2 ASPH mounted to the Nikon Z 6 and I can hardly justify taking it off the camera, it is basically glued to it now.
Another great Voigtlander with a similar range is also a Nokton, the 58mm 1.4, I use one with a Nikon mount on an adapter or speed booster on my Fuji cameras. I think they changed the design since I got mine, there are several versions of this lens. It's "only" around 600$.
For close focus get a helicoid adapter. The 7 Artisans ones are extremely high quality and cost about £65 for an m to L mount for a Leica SL. I’m sure you’ll find one for the GFX. Makes sense as it solves your problem, saves the heartache of selling a gorgeous lens and addresses the issue of a lack of fast glass for the GFX.
Andrew, I have a few Leica mount lenses that I’ve had the same experience with ( long minimum focus distance). I’ve remedied it with a helicoid adapter to lessen the minimum focus distance. It’s pretty awesome. Also purchased canon fd to Leica m adapter that allow me to focus closer with those lenses when I want macro shots. Fotodiox!
Wow the rendering on that lens is gorgeous. I know what you mean about selling, I still have several Zeiss ZF.2 lenses I haven’t used in a while but refuse to sell. Good video!

Voigtländer does make a close focus adapter for the Fujifilm X mount. It's pricey but works well. I started using it with my Nokton Classic 40mm f1.4 during the holidays and have not been disappointed.
@@AndrewGoodCamera I haven't tried close range infinity focus with it. I've been using it for more close up artistic pursuits when shooting fairly wide open. 😂 But seriously, I'm very happy with this adapter.
Denae & Andrew no, you basically have a focus ring on the adapter. If you pull it all the way in, you have a normal adaptor with infinity to 0.7m. But if you focus the helicoid out, then the lens will focus much closer than 0.7m.
I had the f1.1 a long time ago, back when I had a sony NEX camera, I loved that lens, and still kinda regret selling it, the 56mm is amazing so its does what I need now.
Same. It is a great lens. Flawed, but great. I jumped over to the Canon 50f1.2L after, it wasn't as good, then I lost interest in ultra fast glass, sold it all and never looked back.

You can get close focus adapters. You'll lose focus to infinity, but if you mainly use your lenses as portrait lenses, it's probably well worth getting that adapter. Wonderful lens. The paint jobs isn't great, wears off easily, but I won't be selling this lens so it doesn't matter. I was able to get it at its original $899 price. I use this and the Zeiss planar 50mm f2 together. The Zeiss is much smaller and lighter, for when I don't need f1.2
I put this on another video too, but just wanted to mention the close focus adapters for M Mount to Fijix. It turns any M Mount lens into a close focus lens. You can get the Hoag adapter for $35 a think and it's fantastic. Voigtlander also sells their own version but it's 10x the amount at $350.
I've watched this video several times now. Kicking around the idea of picking this up for my M3 and adapting it to my XT3. Still resisting so far because I don't NEED it. Agh. Thanks anyways for helping me argue with myself.
Andrew, I noticed you are using the Novoflex adapter. I have one too but thinking about sending it back to buy the much cheaper 7artisans adapter instead. Thoughts?

Hey, have you tried other M-Mount lenses on the GFX 50R? I bought a used 50R and im now Looking for small lenses beside the GF 50mm 3.5 which i will probably buy when i find it used or on sale. Best Chris
The CV 50mm f/1.2 Nokton VM is my second most used lens, following only its sister CV 40mm f/1.2 Nokton E. The rendering, especially 1.4-1.7 is so great. I just wish the X sensors were FF, for one reason only... I’d like the adapted fun 50mm lenses out there to stay 50, not 75 eq.
@@charruaporelmundo Gustavo I've changed gear around a lot of the last two years, I even have the Nokton f/1.0 now, but I'd say on Sony you don't need both the 40 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.2. What light do you use and what softbox, man I have to know!
Scott Graham Get a helicoid adapter for them and you CAN close focus. I have one for my X cameras. I assume someone will make one for GFX too, if it doesn’t exist already.
It's the Noviflex, which is the only brand I really trust for adapting if I want to achieve infinity correctly, but also dependable tolerances. More expensive than the Fotasys/Fotodioxes of the world though.
I have f1.2 42mm on my camera right now, trying to catch/video my cat who likes to walk up behind me scream bloody murder. I need the lowlight sensitivity, because she only does if it is fairly dark. Once she sees the camera, she stops, so I must be fast.
@@Guairenito Focus peaking doesn't help you a bit as soon as something or someone in the photo is moving. Nobody can manually focus fast enough to reliably follow moving objects. It wil be hit and miss. AF lenses can do both static and moving objects, manual lenses only one of both.
@@bernios3446 Now I see what you mean, you weren't specific at the beginning. I still don't agree with you. I know it is harder, still doesn't mean you can't do it. With practice you certainly can do it very well. How did photographers do it during the analog era to photograph sports? 😳🤔 Were they from somewhere out of this world? No, they just mastered manual focus lenses. Of course your chances of missing focus are way higher, but with practice you can certainly get to a level where you will trust your capabilities of manual focussing. Plus, shooting manual focus on mirrorless cameras that shoot 8, 10, 12 frames per second is super beneficial nowadays. Look, I understand it is difficult and you might not like it, and that is ok. But there are many reasons why manual lenses are still made 😉
@@Guairenito I still have an excellent Zeiss Zoom (Contax Zeiss 35-70/ 3,4), a Zeiss Loxia 85 for Sony and some old ones, I do have experience with it, but although my eyes are still quite ok - I prefer AF. Obviously also with AF you get errors and unsharp images, but as long as the lens has a good rendering I prefer AF. Obviously if one loves mf, go for it :-)
I stopped buying Voigtlander lenses because in Poland, and even in Europe, there is no way to repair such a lens if something bad happens. And this is exactly what happened to me. I have an expensive broken lens and I am helpless.
Andrew & Denae I’ve got the Fuji Xpro1 and 2 but I tried the SL and I was hooked. When they were launched they were way out of my league on price so kind of irrelevant, but now at less than £2000, they’re very reasonable price wise, but the quality of the build and the sublime user experience really is something else. With adapted vintage lenses the 4.4 million pixel view finder is amazing. The sensor is contrast detect only and was designed to work well with adapter M glass so should match your Voigtlander. OK it’s only 24mp, but my god the images are clean relative to the XPro2. Also the complete lack of markings is a weird but wonderful aspect of the camera which I’ve found far easier and quicker to adjust than say my old canon kit. I’m just photographing for the joy of it, which is why I still do love my Xpro2, but the Leica really is special and the images are great (huge caveats here, they’re definitely technically fantastic, but hey I’ve got much to learn... which is why I enjoy your videos). So while I must admit I would really love a GFX-R, I think the SL is its half brother and is somehow extremely special.
Hmm...I have to disagree on a few points here. Given the build quality I doubt you have a bad copy. I have buttery balls of bokeh from this lens on my M3 and I have 8 Voigtlanders, 3 of them 50's. I didn't like the rangefinder patch on the M2...try it on an M3 before you sell this lens. My 50 1.2 is utterly phenomenal. I have no CA or vignetting and OMG the colors...stunning color rendition. Absolutely unmatched for B&W too unless you reach for Summilux but outperforms my crons. Good review. Solid as always.
I think shooting it on the GFX really brings out its flaws. But even on film, mine has plenty of CA. But that's only wide open. Otherwise, seems to manage it quite well. And I agree, the colors and contrast are phenomenal.
Makes sense...pixel pitch on the GFX amplifying CA. I've only adapted a few Nikon lens to GFX with fair results but do adapt MF manual focus medium format lenses with excellent results. The 50mm 1.2 might not punch out of its weight class. I won't be buying a LM to GF adapter to find out. Thanks for taking one for the team!

Scott Graham Get a helicoid adapter for them and you CAN close focus. I have one for my X cameras. I assume someone will make one for GFX too, if it doesn’t exist already.
How similar is this lens to the 40?
7artisan 1.2 50mm 90Ş you revivied ?
Hi Andrew, do. you reckon is possible to use Mamiya 7 lenses on the gfx?
I do
That happy look at 7:03 😅
I love voigtlander with Gfx50r
have you sold it yet?
Whic adaptor is this with the GFX?
Thanks
-C
lovely
What Leica adapter are you using with the GFX 50R and what's that plate below?
It's the Noviflex, which is the only brand I really trust for adapting if I want to achieve infinity correctly, but also dependable tolerances. More expensive than the Fotasys/Fotodioxes of the world though.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Thanks!
Whenever you decide to sell the lens, let me know.
I have f1.2 42mm on my camera right now, trying to catch/video my cat who likes to walk up behind me scream bloody murder. I need the lowlight sensitivity, because she only does if it is fairly dark. Once she sees the camera, she stops, so I must be fast.
One should also not forget that due to manual focussing one will get many unsharp pictures with the Voigtlander.
On a mirrorless body with liveview and careful technique, you will maximize your sharp images with this lens.
That is not true, specially if we are talking about shooting it on Fujifilm and its fantastic focus peaking
Obviously if one loves mf, go for it :-)
I am new to this why you need a lens?
Have the sony enough version and love it. The close focus is greater and I believe it has more elements
I stopped buying Voigtlander lenses because in Poland, and even in Europe, there is no way to repair such a lens if something bad happens. And this is exactly what happened to me. I have an expensive broken lens and I am helpless.
Touching right onto the rangefinder patch. I’m sure you didn’t clean it up. You know the oils from your fingers wears down the coating from the glass.
It's fine, he's not keeping it 😁😎
Hmmm, maybe it is a weird thought, but... You gather quite similar cameras. Which makes its role not so clear.
Try the Nikon 50mm f1,2
If i ever do get that Leica...
But you can still get some third party vented screw-in lens hood for like 2-3 dollars, made of metal.
Hi Andrew … my GFX 50 r and GF lenses are up for sale… as new … let me know if you interested
The Leica you need is the original SL
Why the original?
You are holding an M3 my friend
Very aware. You're in a long line of people anxious to correct that grevious error. ;)
zeiss sonnar would've been another option
Leica M3 not M2. Having a 50mm on the M3 is better than the M2 anyway. Rangefinder has more magnification.
Right. Shows how little I shoot with it. ;)
I bought a gf 45mm f2.8 for less than $700 like new condition. Keep your eyes wide open! Some people are desperate to sell things right away
Leica purests hate him, he has an m3 and says it's an m2.
Jk
Congratulations. You are the first who realized my mistake :)
@@AndrewGoodCamera I'm glad that I found this channel. You make some top notch videos, thank you for the time and effort you put into them 😊
Thanks Dan.
I hope it was a Leica M2, if it was I was going to try to buy it, I certainly prefer the M2 over the M3.
That's an M3 :)
Dude, get a +1 or higher diopter and shoot as close as you want. Then sell the M10 body.
Th
You don't buy a lens to crop it.
Yes I do. I do it all the time. Maybe YOU don't. But don't invent rules for other photographers.
Excellent video 😊!
