Hey Red Rider! I’m a 63 yr old Christian biker gal from Ontario, been riding 42 yrs. You can get a cheap boot tray from the dollar store to catch the drips and save your garage cement floor. I was so thrilled to see that glass doorknob jockey shift on your Dads old Shovel! Wow! Another Christian Canadian chick that rides a suicide clutch! I rode a 52’ Panhead rigid frame with a suicide clutch in the early 1980’s and then bought a 1955 Panhead chopper in 1984 it was in an 11” over rake front section of a FL swingarm frame and in 1994 I rebuilt into my dream bike of a rigid frame bobber (a friend found the frame in a scrapyard for $50 waiting to be crushed as scrap metal!) with 16” ape hangers on 4” risers, wide glide front end, upswept fishtail exhaust, an Andrews J cam and of course a suicide jockey shift with a glass doorknob. If you have an email I can send you a photo for your blog or RUclips channel. Blessings to you. Right on! Jan Black
That trans seal is crazy. I silicone the sprocket on the main drive gear and the little L clip. And the seal with cork. Had it leak free for years. It's a 75 FL.
My shovels both leaked out that seal. Checked the main shaft and it was warn beyond where the seal would have done it's job. Pulled both trannys and installed new shafts and no leaks. love the way shovels look and sound. Love your shovel.
I have those crystals door knobs all in my house lol. Great job maybe it will seal up better once it gets hot and cools several times. Thanks for the update ❤❤❤❤
Another successful ending in the life of the old Shovel Head!:) One thing about these old bikes, they do have such a personality! I'm glad you were able to get it back into proper operating condition and fixing the position of the shift knob. It is a beautiful Shovel with just a teensy bit of a drip! I wouldn't consider that to be a worry in the least bit anymore. Nice job! Keep wrenching, stay warm and safe in your beautiful B.C.! Peace
Congratulations on 26 thousand subscribers, been with you from the beginning,,, my 80 lowrider has been leaking cince I got it in 96. Just carried a 6 oz bottle of oil on runs. Cool scooter!
Good morning 🌅, Angel, that a pity that you still got a leak , you might find it gets worse after you have ridden it , I am sorry to say, I think I said that there is a copper and rubber seal, on the shaft that goes through the drive shaft, you might of damaged the seal on the splines when you put the seal in, it is recommended to put tape around the lines this is what I had to do with mine, plus I replaced the end board bearing of the clutch housing for a Jims bearing and in a race, not sure whether there is one suitable for your bike, Keep up the great work , and yes, it’s cold out at the moment, and has been very icy in the mornings, I cannot ride at the moment as I have just had my op CTS , and it’s going to take a few months to get my strength back in my hand, but I need to have the other one done as well, ❤ from France.
I wrote these song lyrics but haven't put them to music yet. It's about the days when I rode a 1970 Harley Shovelhead. They were wild times and I was pretty young. Did as I pleased and answered to no one but myself. The Shovelhead He fired up his 70 And headed out of town Hell bent for leather He put the hammer down There's nothin' like the highway when you got a restless soul Some say that Shovelhead Is still out on the road He rode right on through Haysville And down the outlaw trail Hell bent for leather Past the old Crossrail Nothin' but the highway Can stand in his way They're still out there watchin' for That Shovelhead today They say that freedom Is just a state of mind The freedom is the highway For all the restless kind There's nothin' like the highway When you've got a restless soul Watch out for that Shovelhead If it's still out on the road He crossed into Ohio And stopped at Seven Bells He had a few too many beers and raised a little hell But somehow that old Shovelhead Rode past the county jail And headed for the mountains Like a rocket ship on rails. They say that freedom Is just a state of mind The freedom is the highway For all the restless kind There's nothin' like the highway When you've got a restless soul Watch out for that Shovelhead If it's still out on the road.
Very nice work. That's definitely a beautiful bike. I love how that seat gives the bike a lower meaner appearance. Ohhh by the way...I finally managed to score a seat like that which is destined for my flh soon. 😁
Glad you got it whipped. A little leak isn't so bad, right? My 2011 Heritage leaked a little and it is a bit newer than the Shovel. Man, I miss that bike. I need another so I can wear my Harley shirts again.
I was having trouble with my 1974 Harley Davidson Sportster XLH, the solenoid was clicking when I pushed the button on the handlebar, didn't know if I would have to replace the solenoid again or if it was a wiring, starter button issue, anyways the bike is 50 years old after all. I tried the feeler gauge idea and it worked great-brilliant idea Red Rider-thank you!
Hello Red, My brother has a shovel head and it is a gem engine wise it is quite to my evo and has a lower base gasket leak so he will replace it this winter its stock with low miles and runs great, he bought it off a friend that wrecked it and bent the front forks but that was it fixed all that and it runs great he just takes it to shows and on rides local , I got my sporty all ready for next year to ride but that bike is so hopped up its a pain to ride very fare getting to old for it but enjoy my restored 1988 FLHS with the stroker engine be safe and ride free
Base gasket leaks a lot of time happen from people not letting their bike warm up before riding it. But that sounds like he got s good deal on it either way!
I had two Shovels loved them both... remember I told you a long time ago, that I put silicone on the sprocket when I put it on the main shaft, it stopped my leak ? Your dad's bike looks and sounds great Angel ❤😘✌👍
Back in the 70's we said "if it doesn't leak it must be empty". I'm still running a 42 WL and a 78 Triumph, they don't always leak, just when they've got oil in them.
Hey Red,it's nice to see you at it again. Our winter isn't here just yet. But it'll be here soon. Tonight it's just under 55 here in South Texas. Hope you and the family are all well. How's your Dad?!! Stay safe..and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🎊🕛🎉🥳🎉🥳🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄
Mainshafts leak much more when they are rotating, so you cant test it sitting still. You need to ride it a few miles until the shaft and seal are hot, then park.
Well it leaked a lot more before when the bike was just sitting. Haven't taken it on the road yet because of how badly it was leaking. But yes, I see what you're saying 👍
Beautiful bike that was one ☝️ of my favourite HD I had a 1976 FLH bad in the day oh thanks for sharing the info about the kill switch. Mine did that and caught fire 🔥 I fixed it and miss that bike
The electronic ignition on my'82 went out 3 weeks after the warranty went out,had points and condenser put in instead.More reliable and cheaper that way.
Isolator are a must have, once the solenoid contacts weld to the contact plate you are up shit creek without a paddle, I saw a starter run on once, it cranked for what seemed like 20 mins, now I fit isolators to all my shovels, in order to fix your output shaft leak, assuming everything is ok , and no butchery has occured then what you will need to fit a modified spacer which has an internal O ring, it goes between the bearing and the sprocket, do some googling and you will find them ,
I did some work on little 2 stroke engines. put a flat surface like glass down with some 600 paper and polish the metal part flat, flat, then do the same as best you can to the opposite surface. I install the part and don't overtighten it. let it heat and start to cool. Give it a little more wrench. Then never speak of it again. I love the TY 250 in the shop.
4:10 This is the Harley sound idling that I remember and liked. Sounds like it has a decent amount of cylinder compression. Should be an impressive road-runner.
Cork wont last for a seal and if the chain is rubbing the starter housing those aluminum chips are what ate up the seal in the first place. Happens a lot when they put shorter shocks on
Seems as though the most logical fix would completely solve the problem, but alas, there is Harley Davidson, always at our side to disprove matters! Side note: my EVO Sportster has never leaked a drop. Go figure. Short video tonight but well-appreciated. Merry Christmas, Angel!

I know u probably already know but no top of the trans there is a breather screw it is right by that cut off switch u put on . that could be clogged making pressure in the trans , also I heard of someone putting 2 seals instead of 1 I never tried that .
I had a 82:Super Glide back in 85:long time ago lol: Anyway I use to have problems with the tranny seal behind the sproket:Changed it and took care of the problem Until next time: And otter primary gasket:Had a dozen HD 's:since:Once the Evo came along don't remember a problem with leaks:Enjoy your riding Life You Only live once😊👍✌️
A great starter start button... I don't like a lot of wires.. However, I myself am not without sin, the devil himself will cry in the wiring of my motorcycle..😂
I don't know diddly about it personally, but I read somewhere that the old chaindrive bikes leaked out the sprocket side on purpose to oil the chain, and that you could put the seal in "backwards" to stop the leak and just oil the chain yourself.
on my old shovel pan, there was an adjustment on the oil pump to increase or decrease the flow of oil to the primary, just a little screw on top of the pump I think. So its good to mke sure you only have what you really need flowing to the primary to reduce leakage

Old Harleys don't leak. They just mark their territory.
You should see what happens when you burn a piston & the pressure starts going to the crank case.
Exxon Valdeze is all that comes to mind. 🙄
That is one awesome build Red. Shovels are getting a lot of attention lately. 👏 Good job.
Yea shovels are coming back in style!! Makes me sad I sold the spare engine we had 😞

Thatvis bad ass! Great bike pops! Now he can ride to forgotten angels with you next year! 😅
Love the starter kill switch. I had a starter run away on one of my previous Glides.
Red I love it ! Like a blessing each time you leave and return.

The Shovelhead
He fired up his 70
And headed out of town
Hell bent for leather
He put the hammer down
There's nothin' like the highway
when you got a restless soul
Some say that Shovelhead
Is still out on the road
He rode right on through Haysville
And down the outlaw trail
Hell bent for leather
Past the old Crossrail
Nothin' but the highway
Can stand in his way
They're still out there watchin' for
That Shovelhead today
They say that freedom
Is just a state of mind
The freedom is the highway
For all the restless kind
There's nothin' like the highway
When you've got a restless soul
Watch out for that Shovelhead
If it's still out on the road
He crossed into Ohio
And stopped at Seven Bells
He had a few too many beers
and raised a little hell
But somehow that old Shovelhead
Rode past the county jail
And headed for the mountains
Like a rocket ship on rails.
They say that freedom
Is just a state of mind
The freedom is the highway
For all the restless kind
There's nothin' like the highway
When you've got a restless soul
Watch out for that Shovelhead
If it's still out on the road.

Check to make sure the transmission is vented correctly and not stopped up.
If not vented pressure forms as the tranny oil warms up and its got to go somewhere.
I okay rebuilt it and the vent was clear when it went back together
@@RedRiderCanadaBC That's good, I will scratch that off the checklist. Hope the leak is done with. Love your videos
