Amazing choice. Great tutorial. I was just looking at Ben Laposky for the first time last week then along comes this tutorial. Can't wait to have a go!
great tutorial!! love it Could you explain if it is possible to reverse the creation of the image and by that creating a endless loop of appearing and dissolving image?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! This particular method isn't great for generation a reversed version of the animation, because it relies on the feedback to accumulate the drawing over time on top of a blank canvas. That said, it might be feed an image of the final result into the feedback loop, and then "erase" the image using the Subtract operation found in the Composite TOP and running the animation of the geometry positioning again.
Thank you! The higher bit depth allows for a "higher resolution" of color representation, meaning that TouchDesigner can represent more color values. For this particular effect, increasing the bit depth can help to reduce color banding as well as artifacts that can occur with the Feedback TOP, especially if the alpha values are close to zero.
Hi hi, really need your help here that I don't know what went wrong, but every-time I drag the alpha channel to line material , render output will turn to black( like nothing is being rendering except the constant black background,; and also even i follow all your steps, there's still a warning sign on render top said the SOP does not have a UV attribute......it will be really appreciate if I can get some help from you, thanks in advanced!!
The p(0) p(1) p(2) are no more an option in the translate parameter of the instance pane of the GEOMETRY - Anything I try (writing p(0) etc. or choosing r g or b from the menu) TD is crashing!!! can somebody help? I am a rookie but I superlove this tutorial...
Can you let us know what kind of system you're on? What GPU, what operating system, and what version of TouchDesigner? Also make sure you're referencing the right operators in the right parameters to make sure the correct data points are available in your instancing setup.
Same Problem: I've tried this 4 times; as soon as I try to add the translate parameters I don't have (p) options. looked like letters for color channels. Then Crashes. A MAT is using texture coordinates but the SOP being used with it does not have UV attributes. UV attributes can be created with the texture SOP?I've tried this 4 times; as soon as I try to add the translate parameters I don't have (p) options. looked like letters for color channels. You can take a sphere output only the row ,than with a slow noise and a twist defom it and trail it with a feedback… the result is pritty similar. No need for instaces for those kind of simple graphics.
There's a lot of different ways to do the same thing in TouchDesigner. The nice thing about instancing is that it's so flexible with it's inputs and can scale so extremely well, that's why you'll often see a lot of pros will just end up using instancing even for smaller things, because they know if they want to scale it, they won't need to rebuild it.

Since you are seeing RGBA channels when adding the translate parameters, it sounds like you might be using a Circle TOP rather than a Circle SOP - I would check that first. This may also be why you’ve been experiencing crashes. A Circle TOP set to its default settings would generate 65,536 instances instead of the 7 that the tutorial has you generate with the Circle SOP. Generating 65,536 instances would take a lot of processing power, and could cause TouchDesigner to hang or crash.
Thankyou for your reply, I only just received the notification. I've got much better at TouchDesigner over the last few months so I'll revisit your tutorial today. 5 months ago I was a total; beginner so I'm not surprised things were not working as they should. TD is a steep learning curve even coming from a compositing and 3D background. Thanks again I'll let you know how I get on. :)

Glad you're diving in!
Definitely needed this tutorial in my life. Thank you Jack
Thanks for watching Noel, hope you're well!
Great. I watched it once and now I am going to recreate it. Watching it again of course ;-)
The fun begins!

Could you explain why you set the noise TOP to 16-bit float? Great tutorial, very elegant solution. Thank you!

Our pleasure! Thanks for watching :)
I USED TO CORRESPOND WITH BEN AND SPEAK WITH HIM ON THE PHONE.

Same problem. Did you solve it?
Really nice work, thank you!

I see your point. Anyway the result is what matter…. Thank you for the inspiring tutorial
@@unveil7762 Yup :) As long as you're happy with the result, it's always fun to explore all kinds of techniques!

Nice! But now 2022 year ))
This tutorial does not work. TouchDesigner will crash at 11:32.
This is possibly due to the use of a Circle TOP instead of a Circle SOP to generate instances - see other comment for details.
It does work ! I am watching it work in this video?
