    ⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider MULTICAM, MULTIBOAT TUTORIAL - onboard the Hobie 15, Hobie 16, Hobie Tiger and Hobie FX1 we're taking a look at how to stop the boat by heaving to.
    In sailing, heaving to (to heave to and to be hove to) is a way of slowing a sailing vessel's forward progress, as well as fixing the helm and sail positions so that the vessel does not have to be steered. It is commonly used for a "break"; this may be to wait for the tide before proceeding, or to wait out a strong or contrary wind. For a solo or shorthanded sailor it can provide time to go below deck, to attend to issues elsewhere on the boat or to take a meal break. It is also used as a storm tactic.

    Very thorough video Joe, thank you. This gives me a few tweaks for when I need to pause my joyride out on the water. One pause is when I have to empty the bladder, which is quite the procedure I have to say, especially when there is a lot of wind. There's probably a videos worth of technique there....lol.

    Works every time. The boat will still drift with the current, but it'll easily defy the wind.

    Hi. Really interesting video as I have never hove too with a cat. Just wondering why it is easier to snap a cat dagger board than a monohul. I have heard of lazer masts snapping but never a dagger board breaking. Is it that there is more force going through it or are they just not as strong? Thanks.

    • @haydenm.3912
      @haydenm.3912 3 года назад +3

      I'm not 100% sure but I'd assume it has something to do with how big the sail plan is on most cats compared to a laser or other small dinghies. That plus the fact that a monohull usually points higher when going upwind(when the board is completely down) compared to a cat. Overall, it seems like as long as you don't have your boards down when you are beam reaching, you shouldn't have a problem with them breaking as I've learned.

    If possible, heave to on starboard tack since technically, your still sailing.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 года назад

      yes, good tip. It's essential in between races at a busy regatta.

  • @neddythened2698
    @neddythened2698 Год назад

    It is perhaps worth mentioning that it is better to hove to on a starboard tack so that you are the stand-on vessel

    Hi Joe, how are the rudders positioned in a hobie 16 when using method 2 (tacking into a hove 2 position). Thank you

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  6 месяцев назад

      Across for a tack as usual and then, keeping the jib in the original position, turning them the other way once the jib has backed - all the way across

  • @dndamian
    @dndamian 3 года назад

    Great video, thanks!! Just wondering why to start sailing again you don’t correct the jib, traveler and main sheet as soon as you correct the rudders. You wait till it gets going first, why? Thanks again, greetings from the galapagos islands!

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 года назад +1

      These are just guidelines. I was making it as straight forward as possible.
      Better to allow the boat to start going forwards again before engaging the main sail which would otherwise bring the boat back up into the wind.

    Now what's missing is "How get on the boat - Heaving yourself on a moving Tiger"
    when you are hanging on to the front beam for dear life while the Tiger is moving with 4 knots.
    How to adjust the traveller and mainsheet the best before uprighting, maybe unhook the jib so there is no pressure on the bow pushing the boat away from the wind, where the trapeze should be, whether to push yourself off from the daggerboard, how to get your foot into the strap under the boom against the dolphin striker, how you can use the spinnaker boom to your advantage, get on breast first or back first, pushing you off with your feet from dolphin striker or spinnaker boom.
    What I can only recommend (and what I did at wildwind): train it with the boat on the mooring, not pushing off with your feet off the ground, to get yourself sorted out, have a procedure before doing it in the real thing.
    Without the trapeze hook, of course, we do not want to make any scratches.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 года назад

      Good idea to train before the real event. I've been putting this one off as it's going to be a really tough one!
