    Thank you for sharing this knowledge! These videos are a huge help to me as I restore my '86 Hobie 16 to sailing condition and re-learn how to sail after a 20+ year hiatus. I'll share some rig pics soon.

    My understanding of the naming of these j and h handles is that they are named after Hobie's two sons, Jeff Alter and Hobie Jr.

    Hey Joe. Some photos of how the H16 trapeze wires are attached at the face of the mast would be helpful. Most people don't know what the extra hole is for on the tang, and I see shackles installed incorrectly at the top of the mast holding the trap wires. Have helped many sailors fix this potentially dangerous problem of only threading the pin through the hole in the mast.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 года назад

      Yeah, it's not obvious. I linked the rigging the mast video at the end which goes through the attachment at the top.

    Hobie also sells two solid bare metal trapeze "dogbones" if you don't want to buy the more expensive J&H handles. I prefer the J&H since the bare metal ones could possibly knock one of your teeth out or break your sunglasses when you are not on the wire.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 года назад

      Ha, yes, one serious downside of the traditional trapeze ring!

    Why do you still need the dogbone arrangement when you use the adjustable set up?
    can't you simply attach the end of double block to the J&H?
    I am considering a trapeze set up for my trimaran 🙂

    Thanks for the vid, got a question for you.
    Right now i have both trapeze shock cords routed through each of the two kringles in the trampoline, then both extending forward around the dolphin striker just as you have done with the crews shock cord. Is this disadvantageous? Why have the crews trapeze routed through the forward kringle and then around the dolphin striker, but not the skippers? I have both done like this atm.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Год назад

      I keep the skipper's loose under the side bar so that it can be moved out of the way, making more space for inexperienced crews to get out.

    Can I use or adapt a kitesurf harness to use in the hobie?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  10 дней назад +1

      A seat harness is good to use but not a waist harness as that will put too much pressure on your back.

    Just got a hobie wave. It came with some trapeze wires and handles. Might try it out once I figure out how to actually sail this thing. What would you say the weight limit is on them? I'm 260. Would that be too much on the mast?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Год назад

      I think if you're not trapezing you can load it up as much as you like.
      I wouldn't put more than 260 on the trapeze at a time.

    Hi Joe, do you have a video on battens? I think this is the only subject I am missing out of the Hobie 16 subject. Also, my jib is trembling and making noises like a helicopter. If I remove the upper batten it's much better.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 года назад +1

      Here's a video on battens - ruclips.net/video/5y9XKwcmtoQ/видео.html
      If the jib is making a lot of noise it is probably in need of a repair, probably a lot of wear to the leech.

    I was about to ask for a video about this. Just picked up a used 16 and the trapeze shock cord is the only thing missing. Thanks!

    Hi Joe, Are J & H handles hugely better than the standard metal affairs? At the equivalent of £45 here in NZ, they aren’t cheap.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 года назад

      They come as standard with Hobie, I like them because they give you more to get hold of. They're not any better than traditional trapeze rings.

    How long does the 5/6mm adjuster rope have to be? Thanks for the help!

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 года назад

      The length that we have between the wire and elastic is 40cm, more like 60cm when you take into account the dogbone and the knots - there will be a short video later today.
