I'm watching all two and a half hours of this, and I mean all of them. The twist is, I haven't played Paper Mario since I was a kid, so I have no clue what's coming next.
I'm really glad it played out the way it did, with so many titles being left. If we'd gotten them all in the first half the back stretch could have been a bit of a slog
I like how it is kind of implied that, despite the constant fighting, everyone in the Mario universe seems to basically be friends. Even Bowser joins Mario in the SNES RPG. They're like kids who are just playing on the playground together.
Well, there are a lot of games that outright show that it's just a stage play. From Mario posing for the camera and thanking the player so much for playing his game over literal stage dressing in something like SMB3 or the recent Princess Peach Showtime to the in-world bloopers shown in the credits of Mario Power Tennis. In truth, all characters might be good friends and only putting on a good show for the player. Not to say that that's a bad thing, though.
A personal anecdote of my childhood. When I was younger, my cul de sac was down the street from a video rental shop. each week my parents would let me rent a game as allowance for doing chores, and this is the only game I ever rented twice because I 1) was unable to beat it in one week (quite a feat for my younger self) and 2) once i beat it, I had to beat it again. One of the greatest games ever made, and one I replay along with TTYD more frequently than I'd like to admit. Awesome video.
Bro give me my childhood back XD. We had the same experience basically, I always got to rent a game for doing some chores and Paper Mario was the only game I ever had to rent multiple times to be able to actually beat it, and then I wanted to play it again after beating it
This is a wild amount of commitment. I’m sure you’ve been feeling the burnout on this project for ages, yet you still push through with the same amount of thoroughness as you did when you started. All I can offer is a paltry 👍 on the video, but know that your incredible effort and relentless perseverance is seen dude
Paper Mario was one of the first games I ever beat on my own. I remember letting that final scene after the credits run for so long hoping that it wasn't over. :')
I would always leave OoT's end scene sit on the TV cuz as soon as you restart the system, you're set back to your previous save. One time I was in the kitchen while the TV displayed a still scene of Zelda and Link meeting and I heard some off key tune on the ocarina. Years later I learned that was my "Scarecrow Song" and the game will play your personal rendition of said tune. It was wild
I think they're getting way too long, I liked the early ones that were 20-30 min max. They're gonna be like 10 hours long by the time we get to the last game lol
Man i don't always see you on my feed but it's awesome to see you almost at 200! This series is going to be such iconic i can see people decades from now finding it and enjoying it.
I watched the first 20 or so then went to sit a stint. When I got out, 1/10 of my subscribed channels had either puttered out or completely quit YT. Imagine my joy when I saw over 100 THAB uploads to catch up on when I did.
Long time watcher, first time caller, love your stuff man. As a father of two young extremely energetic kids my time on youtube is very limited but spent many hours watching you play the games of my past. I appreciate you and the work you put into your videos ❤
Incredible video, Thab. One of my favorite 64 games as well, which makes me really happy to see that you put so much effort into this. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to quality.
Good god the script for this must read like a novel lmao. Very nice watch, well worth the wait. Bet this is the only time someone's been happy about the 64's lackluster RPG catalog. Can't even imagine someone doing in depth videos like this for the entire PS1 library due to that, PM is pretty limited in scope compared to many JRPGs.
a little know fact for paper mario 64 is it has exactly 2-3 100 Star point locations, also depending on mario's level relative to the time said locations are fought: 23:31 Bill blasters, the 1st 100 Star point location. as long as 2 of the 3 blasters are killed off, if mario's level is at around level 4-5, the bullet bills should give the minimum of 1 Star point. meaning from there its an easy 100 Star points via waiting for the blasters firing every other turn 43:39 tutankoopa, effectively the last 100 Star point farm that can be done in PM64, all via him summoning chomps, its legitimately more difficult compared to the bill blasters for 1 reason, tutankoopa's AoE Rock Spell Attack. if you don't or miss the guard w/partner, they can and will eventually be stun-locked for 9 turns, the max possible amount, effectively infinite. tutankoopa's spell will also stop hurting himself at low enough hp, meaning that 9 turn infinite partner stun-lock becomes a more real possibility 3rd and final location's very technically the gold bill blasters in ch 8, but at that point mario would be max level cuz ch 6's amazy dayzees exist, so the 100 Star points from the B. Bill Blasters might as well not exist, yet its there. just comes too late to be useful and amazy dayzees are literallythe only way for mario to reach the max level of 27 in PM64🤔 the one most obscure thing about PM64 is you are never told partners can guard, but tutankoopa's the 1st instance where this is shown partners can guard and can be figured out, the other few times being Lantern ghost's Lantern shine, General Guy's Light bulb, and Bowser Star wave in which mario has to take the hit so his partner can guard, which's one of the harder things since both chars can't guard at the same time. (whereas in the romhack Dark Star edition both chars can guard at the same time via a fast double button press) 1:45:08 Huff and Puff has 1 very obscure thing and thats the fact you can guard his wind blow attack, but you have let go of the button ie stop mashing near the end, then time the A Press right as the Damage comes. I do not know if this also applies to Buzzar, who has a similar move like this, cept hers hits the partner immediately after mario gets hit. perhaps it could be guarded w/them, but that'd be difficult if true. 2:05:47 lastly, a neat fact about the master 3rd form and prince mush from ttyd's remake. in 64 the master's 3 hit combo does 18 damage, and he will only use it if Mario's above this combo's hp threshold, and as stated in his quote "Survive this if you can!" he only uses it if mario would survive the combo. so while the master says he's not holding back before this 3rd fight starts, he actually is holding back since he doesn't use the triple combo when mario is at or below the hp damage it would do. but its most deff a balancing thing game-wise, cuz of how there's no super guard and pm64 mario has a hard limit on his stats. whereas prince mush just rocks out a mega-power rush over 100 damage combo forever in ttyd remake💀 Compared to ttyd 64's deff more simple overall but its like, It legitimately feels overall faster cuz of the spin-dash and rather snappierish animations Paper Mario 64's one of those games where, compared to ttyd/its remake, its super easy to get back into, despite the logically slow prologue for the action commands in 64
Same for me. I'd argue it was one of the first "procedurally generated" online environments, since a new message board was created every time a new game was listed. Some of those obscure systems/games had awesome secret boards. Like the Jewish/Muslim/Christian boards before the site made topical boards.
Yessss. I'm home from work thanks to a cold, and a 2.5 hour Thab video is exactly what the doctor ordered. I never actually finished this game (I know, I know) so I'm curious to see what happens lol
