When Thab first began this challenge, I didn't think it would blow up as much as it did. Now it's become one of my favorite series to look forward to on RUclips. Props for the dedication.
Yes, I remember being furious that the first video only had 5,000-odd views after a few weeks. It's been so gratifying seeing this series get the exposure it deserves.
I started at #18. Binged them all right away, and now I can’t wait for Fridays! It’s such an intense grind to go on. The editing and Thab’s commentary are top notch (especially on the sports games)
One of my most cherished games of my nigh 35 years of gaming. Was genuinely obsessed with this game when it came out. My brother and I did not own a memory card at the time and would rent this game *constantly* from a local video game shop. We loved it so much we would play as far as we could, and attempt to leave the 64 on as long as possible to beat it. Naturally it would always freeze and we would have to restart all the time, but we learned more about the game each time and loved it so much it never mattered. That same love carried on to Goemon's Great Adventure. Both of them were a testament to the gambles that companies were willing to make back in the day, what with the authentically Japanese whackiness and charm that would have been polarizing for many kids who knew nothing about Japanese culture and humor. Those who played these games and loved them, they are always in your heart even to this day ❤
My story is identical... no memory card. I'd only ever made it just a lil past getting Sasukes batteries. Finally beat it a couple years ago lol with a memory card of course
My story is identical; the part about having no memory card. I don’t know how I survived most weeks trying to get my brother to not get pissed at me and my friend playing this one game constantly; from start to finish.
To those who want to play the game themselves: The star blocks have an auto-lock-on feature. All you need to do is jump towards one, keep the stick in its general direction and use the chain pipe. It will lock on 100 % of the time, no need to manually fiddle around with positioning.
I'll join the other commenters who have massive nostalgic feels for this one. I always think music plays a big part in nostalgia, and this game must have one of the best soundtracks on the N64. The title theme, Impact, and a special mention to the Gourmet Submarine theme, a certified banger. It was the game that really introduced me to that eccentric Japanese style, and although some gameplay aspects were familiar, the presentation was so distinct compared to the usual N64 classics. Also there was some doubt as to whether it would get ported over from Japan, so finding snippets in magazines and then finally getting your hands on a copy felt like you were playing something rare and exotic. Watching this series, you can really tell the difference between the games just churned out, and the ones that had some care put into them. This game is so charming, funny, grand and epic, graphically excellent for the time too. The one surprise watching back is how quick thab finished it, without a guide even. I seemed to remember it taling ages back in the day. It does seem a little shallow. Wonder what they could do these days, with the same world building but a bit more content.
Here’s an interesting tidbit, this game only sold 55,000 in America and around 141,000 in Japan (it had a PAL release but I’m not sure what it sold in that region) making this game one of the rarest titles on N64 but what’s amazing is it’s remembered so fondly. My brother traded an extra copy of Turok on the bus to get this game and it’s been in my possession ever since. Great game and one I play through at least once a year!!
I played this game as a rental once and it's been stuck in the back of my head for decades. All I remembered was the giant robot fight, the Achilles Heel fight, and that it had a weird sense of humor. Thank you so much for this one, I'll have to go replay it now!
As a kid, this game’s box caught my eye at the rental store and I had no idea it would be so legendary. So much nostalgia, when I saw the thumbnail I clicked in a heartbeat. Gameplay, music, characters, art style, it has it all!
At a certain point in japanese history they made it so you needed to be nobility to own a sword. So those pipes sort of became the self defense weapon of choice for a while.
Played this a ton before Ocarina. It was crazy to me how similar it ended up being. I'd had no experience with Goemon before then. I was a huge Power Rangers fan then too, so I loved the robot sections.
I had a whole controller pak page dedicated to the 3 robot battles on separate save files. I wish the game had given you the option to replay them, but this worked for me... Edit: Apparently there IS a hidden robot boss rush mode! But I never unlocked it...
@@Imgema YES I've saved a bunch from both games they're so good 😭 I always forget Goemon's Great Adventure was the sequel, it being a side scroller lol
BRO I’ve been trying to figure what this game was called for like the last 3 years. I played it as a kid and forgot what it was called. All I had was the images in my head. Seen the thumbnail and it all just clicked. This is amazing.
It's a pity you didn't speak to the Witch as Sasuke. Because you would have got some humorous extra dialogue that revealed that he was the one who accidentally blew up the Wise Man's house earlier. In addition to that, you also unlocked an Impact boss rush mode after finding every Fortune cat in the game. I'll admit the game is a bit archaic and WAY too easy. But I have fond memories of my time playing it as a kid. Plus I still love listening to the music to this day. Don't expect an easy time with Goemon 2 though. That game is ball bustingly difficult compared to this.
@umbaupause You also unlock all the vocal themes in the sound test too, I think you might have to beat the boss rush to get it, It's a small bonus but I think it's cool that it's there
I love this game so much. It's worth remembering that it actually predates Ocarina by several months, so the mechanical similarities are kind of wild coincidences. Goemon's Great Adventure is completely different but also rules. 5th gen Konami was incredible. Shame about where they are now.
I love this channel bro. I'm sure you hear this all the time. I was too young to actually finish the games. Blockbuster and stuff, also my attention span. The only I remember beating was Ocarina of time. And of course Goldeneye. I'm so glad I get to see the full end game. Thank you so much bro! Never thought I would see it.
Finally! This was one of my fav N64 games growing up in the late 90's. I was finally able to snag a used copy from blockbuster for $20 eventually and then got a memory card. Every time I had rented it prior I would just play until I had to power off because I never had a memory card
I keep forgetting Goemon had an n64 game, mainly because i played the snes one with a friend (it had coop) on a hacked original xbox with emulators and thousands of games.
I love that this game never fails to capture the affection of those who play it for the first time. I very rarely play games that hook me anymore, and of those titles it's usually the ones with a particular gimmick or solid atmosphere which lure me in. The Ganbare Goemon series is so quintessentially Japanese there's no reason why it should appeal to foreign audiences -- but it's music is banging, it's motifs are exotic, the humor is really silly and accessible. I think I cried as a 6 year old having to return my rental to Blockbuster. I will say I may have been a bit spoiled STARTING the series with this title as it IS also the slowest-paced and showcases the difficulties Devs had adapting motion to 3D environments; the SNES games are perhaps a bit faster-paced and more cohesive in graphics. But I don't know. Maybe it was the man singing over Impact's introduction, or the way each antagonist is simply "name that rhymes with Karen", or I just really loved the green knifey ninja. I definitely get rose-colored glasses watching this title.
I feel with the rating the time it was realized in relation to the other N64 games should be considered. Cause mystical ninja goemon predates ocarina of time by atleast a year... yet it has so many of the stables that ocarina gets credited for "staples" of gaming. i think that is a huge part why goemon is so fondly remebered. also if your not a fan of the absurd humor then goemon as a franchise wont stand out to you
ratings are just based off of his enjoyability of the game. thab's played oot at least a few times but if iirc a ton of times so id bet that "ruined" MNSG's chances of having a higher rating. Game was awesome but probably pretty just okay if you've already played oot a ton and never MNSG
I beat this game as a kid and loved this game and number 2 even though it was more a side scroll but 2 players. My favorite part is when he turned into a super saiyan knock off
SNES Goemon was very linear in level design, but this title tried to debut for the N64 by being nonlinear in full explorative 3D, which was the trend for new 3D games at this time. It can be quite confusing where to go to for this reason. Thank goodness they returned to the linear level layouts in the N64 sequel to this.
I clearly remember having the issue of Nintendo Power featuring this game in High School. I’d read it over and over again during study hall. I wasn’t disappointed. Those were the days.
Gameplay wise, I prefer its sequel : Goemon's Great Adventure. It's a 2.5D platformer so the gameplay is streamline, but the game still has the same surreal humor and great soundtrack.
I played this way way after the n64 lifespam, when I was getting the good games I missed while having the system. Damn. Really great one, loved it a lot, couldnt put it down till I beat it. Would have even more nostalgic feelings towards it if I played it back in the 90s.
I was never really able to play the full version of this title; now I know what I have been missing out on. It reminds me of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Quest 64, Super Mario 64, etc..
@@DmitriyK12 yeah its great. it might not have the overall qualitiy as zelda, mario, banjo kazooie, but it has its own unique charm, i loved it. its about 35bucks on ebay in europe, dont know about US.
This was a game I knew about because I’d save up my pocket money to buy the monthly edition of N64 magazine, and this was featured as a Japanese exclusive and always intrigued me !
This is one of my absolute favorite games on the N64. I played it from start to finish multiple times as a kid, and loved every minute of it. It's so unique and memorable, and it's one of those games that makes me happy that I grew up with an N64 in my late childhood/early teenage years.
"I Am Impact" is an absolute banger of a song, in what was one of my favorite games as a child. Thank you for this and best of luck on the full completion of the series. Always looking forward to seeing more gems from my childhood on here!

Ah, my favorite N64 game! Glad you came through it on the positive side, the game oozes charm, just like the rest of the Goemon series. Speaking of, can't wait 'til you cover Goemon's Great Adventure!
This was one of the N64 games I saw in magazines and always wondered about. There was no chance it would ever get a UK release and so I waited a short 25 years. Thanks! It exceeded my expectations.
Funny how thab says he can't play "I AM IMPACT!" because he'll get copyright struck... and five minutes later it's being used as background music under his voiceover!
Love this game! Picked up a JPN copy from a con. Was interesting seeing some of the changes made from the western version. The fortune teller look different and manji symbols on the star blocks
This is one of my all time favorite games. When I first played it, I didn't know much English and the mother of a neighbor kid I was friends with had to translate most of it for us. This game never got a german translation and instead was released in english. It ignited my life long love for all things Japan. I still listen to the awesome song "I am Impact" every other day.
The fate of Goemon is hysterically brutal. This robinhood like folk-hero was boiled alive and that style of tub he was boiled alive in will forever be called a "Goemon Bath"
Mad respect for you. Your videos are entertaining as well as a review / walkthrough! Keep it up! Also, I hope you're allowing yourself to look online if you're ever stuck in a game because when Hexen 64 is up, you'll need all the help you can get!
This was one of my favorite N64 games. Got it cheap when a video rental place was selling inventory. Wish I held onto it instead of selling. Such good humor and story
This game was an obsession of mine as a kid. I remember the countless days and nights my poor console had to stay on, cause I didn’t have or knew what a memory card was. I remember the frustration when my brother would be mad at me and my friends for playing this game too much, so he’d unplug the n64. Which forced me and my friend to play from the start of the game. If it wasn’t for this game, I wouldn’t have known what a memory card was until I bought a PSX. I remember several times getting to the submarine underwater. Only to get stuck in an invisible box or whatever at the entrance. Only to start from the beginning. I remember my friend almost breaking my controller cause of how often we had to restart the game. I learnt how to be patient just by playing this game constantly. From start to mid game at the submarine stage and getting trapped in an invisible box; only to restart and try hard not to repeat that mistake getting trapped.

The music in this game is top tier
One of the most charming games from it's time, so much character, amazing music.. it was an unforgettable experience as a kid just like it's successor!
I played this game as a 6 year old on release..... I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't even get to the mountain, but.... I had fun with it :D
RIP Brandon I’ll never forget staying up playing mystical ninja. Thanks for playing this!
SO STOKED you played this. One of the best games on the N64. It has a diehard following for a reason.
I've been waiting for you to play this since episode 1 of the series! Very excited, one of m favorite games ever!
Ah, my favorite N64 game! Glad you came through it on the positive side, the game oozes charm, just like the rest of the Goemon series. Speaking of, can't wait 'til you cover Goemon's Great Adventure!
I am watching this so drunk in Australia and I love it. My favourite Chanel after a drunk Friday.
This was fun to watch! As a young kid, I never got past the robot fight at the beginning haha
This was one of the N64 games I saw in magazines and always wondered about. There was no chance it would ever get a UK release and so I waited a short 25 years. Thanks! It exceeded my expectations.
The 2nd one is also amazing. Pretty much the best 2D Jump and Run on the N64.
"PRRRRASMA!!!" is truly one of the game audio clips of all time
This game looks hilarious. I've never played it, but I'm sad that I didn't back in the day.
Been waiting for this one since the beginning. I loved how quirky and strange this Zelda-ish platform er was when I was a kid. Great video man.
watching this was like a fever dream. One of the weirdest games I've seen. No thankyou lol
I never told you but I've definitely been waiting to see you play this , what an absolute gem of a game
I've heard great things about this and have always wanted to play it some time.
"I can't put on the Impact song because it'll get my channel flagged"
*Plays it anyway in the next scene as background music*
Funny how thab says he can't play "I AM IMPACT!" because he'll get copyright struck... and five minutes later it's being used as background music under his voiceover!
Love this game! Picked up a JPN copy from a con. Was interesting seeing some of the changes made from the western version. The fortune teller look different and manji symbols on the star blocks
This brings back some fond childhood memories had forgotten all about this game till this video randomly popped up on my feed.
My favorite N64 game! I love this game so much!
Hands down favorite N64 game, no idea how I wound up with it as a kid but so glad I did, a true hidden gem.
This was THE game for me as a kid. I still have my copy. Seeing you play it was amazing and made me wish I could replay this for the first time.
Mad respect for you. Your videos are entertaining as well as a review / walkthrough! Keep it up! Also, I hope you're allowing yourself to look online if you're ever stuck in a game because when Hexen 64 is up, you'll need all the help you can get!
Never played this one, I love seeing games that seem so solid that I have never played or even heard of. Remember Quest 64?!
0:04 a bit sus for youtube LOL
its the right amount of sus + hooks the viewers in
Lol I'm dead!!!!!!!😂
I loved this game so much growing up! I loved that it was so weird, and the music is still something I listen to every so often. Love the series!
I rented this game when I was a child. Wow
Hell yeah one of the greatest N64 titles
I thought this game was a fever dream. I remember playing it but I don’t remember anything about it
This game is like some sort of digital cryptid from my youth. Thanks for confirming that wasnt a fever dream.
One of my favs on N64, always love to see new perspectives on it! Can't wait for Goemon's Great Adventure (unless I missed it already)
MY FAVORITE N64 GAME!! I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE YOU STARTED THE SERIES!!
I never played the 64 game, but the SNES one I played to death. I loved that game.
The snes game is great, but the 2 n64 games are even better.
This was one of my favorite N64 games. Got it cheap when a video rental place was selling inventory. Wish I held onto it instead of selling. Such good humor and story
I remember renting this game when i was really little , i couldnt beat that 2nd boss for the life of me.This game was so weird to me back then lol
Glad you liked the robot battles Thab. I absolutely loved fighting those battles over and over when I was a kid.
been waiting for this one! one of my favorites growing up.
I've been waiting for this game specifically...one my top 5 N64 games. And it's soundtrack is awesome
