LYRICS
My father could use a little mercy now
The fruits of his labor fall and rot slowly on the ground
His work is almost over won’t be long he won’t be around
I love my father, and he could use some mercy now
My brother could use a little mercy now
He’s a stranger to freedom shackled to his fears and doubts
The pain that he lives in is almost more than living will allow
I love my bother, and he could use some mercy now
My church and my country could use a little mercy now
As they sink into a poisoned pit its gonna take forever to climb out
They carry the weight of the faithful who follow ‘em down
I love my Church and Country and they could use some mercy now
Every living thing could use a little mercy now
Only the hand of grace can end the race
Towards another mushroom cloud
Theres people in power who’ll do anything to keep their crown
I love life, and life itself could use some mercy now
Yea, we all could use a little mercy now
I know we don’t deserve it, but we need it anyhow
We hang in the balance dangle ‘tween hell and hallowed ground
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
My wife listened to Mary before she passed. I still love my wife, church and country. I lost my wife. I fear I am losing my country. 24 years of military service and not a day of regret. I wish I could share my love of country to those who look to tear it apart.
Yes sir I agree the line about the brother was written for me I suffer severly in pain many surgeries gone by including 2 this yr she is A great singer Songwriter but yes It's true OUR COUNTRY is in a weird uncharted place Let's band together and Vote and pray!! Sorry for your loss !!!
Amen Brother! Sorry for your loss my friend.
I love my country, I detest the government. And I honor the people who put their lives on the line for all of our freedom, and benefit and blessing, regardless of who is sitting in the White House, or holding power in the house and Senate.
Man, im with you brother
I agree..dont want to see the outcome..but freedom ...
I knew there were songwriters still among us, and this music gives me hope.
Ditto
No other song has ever affected me like this. It’s one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion
It is. Definitely.
❤❤
I know it's been a while but I just had to comment. I have some serious pain going on and am exploring music as a gateway to mental healing i.e. the way some songs give us "goose bumps" which is a physical manifestation of our emotions and seems to over ride neurological and other types of pain. This song may have the power to heal.
Why not?
Why not what?
I heard this song on Yellowstone shortly after my father passed away. I love my father. ❤ Great Song
Me too 🥺
I lost my best friend a long time ago and it doesn't get better but knowing we'll be together again
Heard it today watching Yellowstone too, on my Birthday, at our Farm, missing my Dad gone now 3 years. 😢
Really a very great song
Wow, my father, a brilliant minister in Michigan, served and helped people all his life, had a doctorate in sacred theology. He died in 1982, and I still miss him....
“We hang in the balance, ‘tween Hell and Hallow’d ground”... Oh Lord do we.
It bothers me to know this is as underrated as it is. Mary deserves millions of listeners on all her songs.
I couldn’t agree more!
One cannot voice sentiment like this without walking through pain, facing the injuries of life rather than running away, forgiving rather than retaliating.
@@Honkytonkified So true. Beautifully stated.
I'm coming from Yellowstone.
me too 👻

Me to
Yes, today
Me too 😢
So am I
Heard this song on the season finale of Yellowstone, and it struck me to the bone!!!
That is why I am here. I just heard it at the closing scene of Yellowstone as well. What an amazing scene. What an incredible song about all that we hold dear.
Amazing show, amazing music, amazing song. My father is a self-made success and built an amazing life for his family but now has a degenerative disease. He didn't have a chance to finish his work and just exists now...broke me down!
heard it after Yellowstone, and I thought it was a beautiful song, cant stop playing it
Yup Yellowstone brought me here
Shane Barker >>> The same with me... I like Yellowstone ! This song stayed with me. I just found Yellowstone 3 weeks ago. Amazing how people come across songs and movies/show on T V...
I left my dad today knowing that he could go at any moment now. I found this song around midnight and made it my prayer for him. I love my father.
I am right alongside you. My dad, who I adored, passed away in 2018. The world is just not the same without him. I hope to join him soon...
My Dad died later that very night. I felt a peace come over me as I let him go.
Very few songs knock me over the first time I hear them. Oh my gosh...Mary, you are incredible.
Phenomenal song!
Me too !!
Idrink and lucky stars have the same effect on me, she got so much soul and heartbreak in her voice
me too
Amen !
This song.....my brother who's sad.....my father aging....my country falling apart...god bless my family and my country....everything touched my heart with this song
💗
Seems whole world needs mercy now. People of faith needed to keep hope alive.❤
Amen
I feel you... in spirit.
My sister was dying with bone cancer and she loved this song. When she was in so much pain I would turn this song on and lay it on her pillow and it would calm her down! I can still hear her say “ I like that “.
😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
GOOD GOD.., of mercy through you and song. Mary Carries us through when we hear this
OUTSTANDING!!! Thanks
And Singer Songwriters like you are the reason TOP DOWN FINANCIE bought and control the music industry many moons ago. They can't let true artists spreading HEALING and INSPIRATION among an obedient work force......they might start getting "ideas"!!!
Absolutely true and beautiful, I lost my brother and my father to cancer, I heard a small piece of this on Yellowstone, had hubby look it up,he got out his 6 string ,played it for me, thank you 😊 🙏 I believe in the signs ,if this ain't the truth idk what is ❤
Beautiful! So sorry for you loss. But glad they are resting in such a better place.❤
Grace and Mercy to all and those who are living in fear and in doubt. Love you brothers and sisters. 🤍
And unto you.
God Bless.
As we speak. Thank you so much for the pat on the back. Exactly what I needed.
Thank you Friend/sister/ brother….God Bless you and Yours…. God Bless and Protect this once great country the United States of America….Lord we are sorry that this country has turned its back to your Glory…. Maranatha .
Right now our country could use a little mercy!
Amen!
Amen
Twin Pines! Do you live in a place in California that's on Mt. San Jacinto and is called Twin Pines? That would be one heck of a coincidence, because that would make us neighbors!
And yes, AMEN!
True but we brought this upon ourselves , getting away from God ,the things we allow that's wrong ,#1 Obama ,and the destruction of America,
@@houstonbrown3450 Yes you are dead right because the guy after him brought such peace, unity and pride to the nation. My goodness you talk some crap
@Pamberi ne Hondo this song isn't about politics. Don't fall for that. Keep your head up, your heart forgiving and soft and have compassion for people. ESPECIALLY the people that disagree with you. If we keep repaying evil for evil we are just like our opponents.
Mary has written THE song for the times we are are all struggling through.
It could change the world. If only there were a way to play it in streets around the world.
there is and it is you, repeating the call
Look up Bob Neuwirth. (Pardon the pun).
There is. Just sing it. Or whistle it. Mary Gauthier was an orphan. New Orleans found her an inspiration. Ask anyone who is a First Responder. Or anyone taking a bullet to protect anyone, everyone. Irrespective of Race, Creed, or Colour. We are human beings. My race. Pure mutt. Very Irish. I am very proud to be from this country. If you hate it here so much go wherever you feel appreciated. You have the right to be anything you want. Because my forbearers sacrificed anything they could to defeat evil.
Question... Do you feel entitled or just an advocate for Free Agency? Oops😅. Wrong thread. Sorry, I just love this song. As do you.
Now we can sing it all over this world now. Together... In perfect harmony or not. Just sing it.
Music heals.
Great Idea. I can play, good enough to do that , I hope... song is pure spirit at times like this moment in time. Mercy to you, @ user
AMEN! This song IS AGELESS!
Thank you Jesus and Mary. I never knew what that was all about until just now. We all need a little mercy now.
I was out in the country in a beautiful spot. The day was nearly over and sunlight was filtering through the trees.
This song came on the radio and it was...MAGIC. It gave me such peace. It was a God moment for me.
I'm beginning to suspect that Mary has a special connection to a higher plane, and communes with forces greater than ourselves.
Lucky. I was sitting at home and flipping through channels and just stopped on PBS (not sure why because I'm NOT A COUNTRY MUSIC FAN) and something MADE me stop. Heard the first line and that was it. I sat there with my mouth agape just listening.... bowled me right over.
I heard this song yesterday morning I heard this for the first time. It brought the truth forward for our country, our great AMERICA!!!!
I’m in the hospital recovering from a heart replacement I had yesterday. My great niece sent this song to me. I’m sharing this with everyone. It’s amazing to all who hear it. Thank you Mary
This song not only goes deep inside. It touches your soul.
The world needs that mercy now, perhaps more than ever.
the relevance this song has today is almost spiritual.
I'm thinking of sending this to my favorite pastor, as I consider it a hymn. It's a very progressive church, they support LGBTQ and BLM and all kinds of "alphabetic" groups that support human rights and Love.
There's a lady with a gorgeous voice in the congregation who often performs songs that are pop songs with beautiful messages. I would love to hear her sing this.
Love your pic, BTW! Aren't kitties awesome buddies? You have a sweet friend there! I'm holding the one who owns my heart. Houdini, the magical kitty.
It is spiritual no doubt
Not almost, it definitely is....
yes indeed, this whole world most certainly, needs some mercy now,
...and then some.
😉💜🌻
Got that RIGHT!💝
Well said my friend!
this song should have been at the top of charts soon after it was released.
2023 here. When I was 15 , Im 70 now, I used to try to write happy songs about friends but they came out feeling like this. So I stopped trying and just enjoy other's work now.And the along comes Mary.
Heard it on Yellowstone and learned it in twenty minutes so I can play to my dad
Strong voice calling us all to calm down.
I'm coming from Yellowstone 2024, this is going to be a journey
This is a wonderful song in this time of sadness worldwide...god bless our families and our country...you have provided us with a shoulder to lean on... thank you ..Ms Gauthier
The first two verses knocked me to my knees. This song needs more attention.
Has passed a bit of time since a song made me cry...
This song is so amazing. No other song has ever made me feel the way this song does. Maybe just the time in my life or something. Can’t explain it but what a powerful song
Yellowstone got me here.....I lost the ground to stand upon the day I lost my father a few years ago. it just wrecks me to bits seeing his vacant room now.
Thanks for this beautiful song Mary.
I flew from California ( i was on a job out there) to Ohio to get my fiance, then we flew to Atlanta, Ga Drove to Decatur, Ga.i went to see her perform in very small venue. Eddies attic. Maybe (100 people)Afterwards she sat at our table with us for like 15 minutes. I just think she is a amazing talent.
this song made a grown ass man cry
❤ this song goes out to my brother J. C.
As a recovering alcoholic gay man I relate so much with everything she writes . She's a recovering alcoholic lesbian and I love her .
I'm an alcoholic bisexual Christian man, waiting for an appointment to rehab. I can drink two big bottles of vodka each day and don't get drunk. I just get calm as a rock inside a mountain, and when I don't drink I'm just sick and unstable. I could need some Mercy now.
Yellowstone sent me here, oh boy could 2020 use this song..
You can say that again what a beautiful song
❤ this song goes out to my older brother
My older brother is it good brother the best❤
I first heard this song on Yellowstone and it was so appropriate for the episode/scene. The song hit me hard for more reasons than just the scene on Yellowstone. My dad died suddenly a few years ago and he loved his land and had so many concerns about our environment. He certainly did what he could for his property but his legacy has essentially died with him and it is so sad.
I am no country fan, but this one gives me goosebumps, for sure. Lovely.
This voice, these lyrics, that melody, myGod how lovely. It’s a emotional storm!
That cello!
Man
Some songs just hit home at the right time
This is one of those songs at this present time
You SHOULD HAVE WON AN Emmy for this one song alone. The song of hope. One of the only one's penned in this generation.
It's Grammy not Emmy..
@@michaelsheridan2748 it was on a show.. should have taken home both in one category or another in my opinion
I love this song so much..
It's an ardent, beautifully poetic prayer set to music and describes exactly the times we are living in.
I would love to sing this as part of a choir in a house of worship.
I had to stop this video., to say, "Is this written, By the hand of Grace " ? WE need it....
My dad sent this song to me. I listened to it after grocery shopping out in the parking lot in my car. Tears started falling down my face as I thought about our state of affairs in this country and the world. It seems as though God has lifted His hand of mercy and His righteous judgment has come. This regular guy in work boots, a tshirt and ball cap walks in front of my car and is holding two bouquets of flowers. He ever so randomly turns at my car and hands me one through my window. He saw my tears and said “there is still mercy,” My only thought was that I hope the other flowers are for someone that has not yet understood His mercy. Crazy how God always makes Himself known to those who love Him and remove all trace of doubt and fear. Praise Him!
By "chance" this was the first song I heard at church after my father in law died. It hit me to the core.
I heard it after my father died as well. Blessings
That wasn't "chance", but you already know that. Mary's songs have helped me get through some tough stuff. I sing along and keep moving forward.
@@LazyIRanch Not trying to evoke sympathy but just had to reply to the truth of your comment. 2 years after posting this comment, my 19 year old son died. I have documented 86 single spaced pages of "chance" things that happened afterwards. No. Not chance. The phrase "sing yourself forward" has also been specifically said from the writer of the song that has meant the most to us afterwards. Anyway, you're right about singing along, moving forward, and things aren't just chance.
@@9800421 I'm so sorry! You have my sympathy, anyhow. There's no greater pain than losing your child, and I'm glad you had those experiences and documented them. I read a book called "When God Winks" that has stories of amazing "coincidences" that have happened to people, some famous. I remember the "Oprah" story being particularly amazing.
I believe you, because I've had similar experiences I can't explain, but consider them gifts that helped me hang on to hope.
I've almost lost my son several times, and it's a miracle he's still here. He became very sick from a strep infection when he was born, given a 25% chance of surviving the night. When he was 14 months old, his mentally ill and violent father kidnapped him and they were missing almost a year. Some told me to give up, but I knew he was still alive because of the "messages" I got in a recurring dream that turned out to be true.
There's been several more, but I tend to ramble so I'll shut up before I tell his life story!
@@LazyIRanch "Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now

Another artist who once recommended I can't understand how I lived without.
Perfectly put 👏
Absolutely one of the best songs ever written. It gets to your very soul.
Oh Mary, you are a prophet/poet... now more than ever we need some mercy.
Oh yes Rhonda.
I was a late arrival to Yellowstone. Didn't start watching til late December '21. Binged all seasons twice and am halfway thru a 3rd time. The lyrics hit very hard, especially with the current situation with our country and the world. Besides being a great drama this show has introduced me to some incredible music.
The music is great. I’ve finally found music that I love.
Heard this years ago at the Opry. She was the opening act. Powerful then and more powerful now.
We listen to “ Mercy Now “ every day, sad. But inspiring.
This song reminds me of my Daddy, I love & miss him so much! 😔❣️.... My lil brother could use a lil Mercy Now too.
First time I heard this, I began crying and didn’t stop. So unbelievably good. Thx to my son for sending it my way.
Heard this for the first time in 15 years today and with a few days left until the election I can't believe how relevant it still is. Now more than ever. Be kind.
You can buy Mary's 10 CD back catalog for $49 on her website. I just did. She was one of my favs in college in the late 90s, but between copied cassette tapes and Napster I probably never gave her a dime then, so I owe her for 25 years of great music.

Lyrics
My father,
Could use a little mercy now,
The fruits of his labour,
Falling right slowly on the ground,
His work is almost over,
It won't be long he won't be around,
I love my father,
He could use some mercy now.
My brother,
Could use a little mercy now,
He's a stranger to freedom,
He's shackled to his fear and doubt,
The pain that he lives in,
It's almost more than living will allow,
I love my brother,
He could use some mercy now.
My church and my country,
Could use a little mercy now,
As they sink into a poison pit,
It's gonna take forever to climb out,
They carry the weight of the faithful,
Who follow them down,
I love my church and country,
They could use some mercy now.
Every living thing,
Could use a little mercy now,
Only the hand of grace,
Can end the race,
Towards another mushroom cloud,
People in power,
They'll do anything to keep their crown,
I love life and life itself could use some mercy now.
Here we are,
Could use a little mercy now,
I know it don't deserve it,
But we need it anyhow,
We hang in the balance,
Dangle 'tween hell and high low ground,
And every single one of us could use some mercy now,
Every single one of us could use some mercy now,
Every single one of us could use some mercy now.
❤️
This song has really hit home the last few years, maybe even more now as our country seems to be coming apart at the seams.
I see you wrote this 4 years ago, before we even knew how awful things were going to be!
I hope you made it through, and that things are improving for you. It was the hardest 4 years I've been through, but it seems we dodged a bullet by making sure 45 was a one-term occupant of our White House.
Now we have to be ever vigilant because certain politicians are gung-ho on creating a fascist dictatorship, and they'll stop at nothing to prevent certain blocks of voters from having a voice.
We need to stop acting like they actually give a crap about average Americans and see them for what they are; puppets of corporate donors who want low wages, and few benefits for their employees while they greedily accept piles of cash in the form of corporate welfare.
@@LazyIRanch Do u sniff little kids too?
TRUMP 2024
I remember my father having Alzheimer’s and hearing this song and thinking …. My dad should could use some mercy now. He’s now passed but I’ll always hear this beautiful song and think of him. This song is so meaningful.
And today …. We all could use some mercy now !!!
Finished season 1 of Yellowstone and I knew some of the songs. But not this. What a song. Yellowstone must have an awesome soundtrack.
God that ending scene of him just walking away in that beautiful landscape. The song plays just after Beth hugs him and it’s the first sign of affection that we see from any of his children all show. Affection is so unusual that he completely freezes during the hug and even breathes out a deep shaky breath, as if that hug had been so difficult to endure. He went through absolute hell this show and a hug from one of his kids get him so shook that he just stills. Then the beautiful music plays asking to show her father mercy and it just works so well. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. It’s like this song was written for John.
The first episode of "Case Histories" has this song and John Prine's, "The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness." Just about the two best sad songs ever. by two great singer/songwriters.
I was wondering if I was the only one who heard it on Case Histories.
I am watching it right now.
Watching it at the moment , dad died in May x
@@TheHappyTangerine Watching both seasons over again. Loved it.
Yellowstone got me here🥂
Just got into Yellowstone and heard this song for the first time. Beautiful.
This goes out to my older brother
This is what prayer should be.
Shout out to Yellowstone for playing this song I love it now
Holy cow... I heard it on Yellowstone. But I never listened to it...
Reruns... I just looked it up here...
All choked up...
I first heard this song driving from Murfreesboro to Lavergne one night in 2005. It reduced me to tears. I almost had to pull over.
A year later, my wife and I moved to Boston and I started playing every open mic I could find. At Java Joe’s in Jamaica Plain, I met a fella who said he knew Mary Gauthier and we talked about what it takes to get noticed and be a successful artist. “Be good” was the advice he gave me per Ms. Gauthier.
Flash forward to 2018 and I’m slinging samples of booch and kraut at a Whole Foods in Nashville and who comes by my table but Mary Gauthier. I asked her if she’d like a sample, then told her she looked like Mary Gauthier. She said, “well, I AM Mary Gauthier.”
We talked for a quick moment about sauerkraut and songwriting and I thanked her for being her.
Today, while mudding drywall, this song came on and it split me open. I just started crying again like I was hearing it for the first time. This may be the perfect song for the end of a year like 2020.
I wouldn’t be here without heaping loads of grace and mercy extended to me in my time. In gratitude, I’m practicing to extend as much of these as I can to others. I have much more
Practicing to do. Best wishes and happy new year to y’all. Let’s make room for some grace and mercy.
The year might end, but our adventures as individuals and as a collective will continue. Let’s do our best to make room for grace and mercy.
Well said.....
She needs All the support that she can get. This woman is as good as many of the past that we cherish. I just purchased her CD.
Yellowstone brought me here❤❤❤❤
Heard this song watching Yellowstone and it hit me smack between the eyes. Absolutely brilliant!
Lost my dad this past May unexpectedly. When he was in the hospital, I prayed quite specifically for mercy as he suffered through in hospice for days. Hearing this song really stirs some sadness, but it’s hard to turn off.
I'm sorry to hear someone's story that is parallel to me. This song struck a sad cord with me, but it is exactly how I felt, too. And I prayed the same prayer. It was the hardest thing to watch my father pass. He left us in 2007. How do you say goodbye to your very own Superman? 😥
The exact same thing happened to me with my dad, who I just adored. Tried to get him home, but unfortunately, he caught pneumonia, and passed away, on a ventilator, whilst my brother and I held his hands. I could feel him go cold on my hand. It was the worst and safest moment of my life. I will never forget it!! I really wondered how cruel and awful, all the things he had to go through at the end. Like incontinence, and the anxiety he had. I saw the fear in his eyes. Made me physically sick.....!! Not enough mercy in this world we live in now. Thank you Mary for your beautiful song. It does soothe my soul.....
Lost my Dad in 2013. Hard to watch a man that survived 2 tours of Vietnam 21 year US ARMY veteran melt into a hospice bed from stage 4 brain cancer at 73. Just goes to prove the frailties of humanity. He told me once that time waits for nobody and eventually everyone passes. I was a teenager and now at 58 it chills me to recall his words. I miss his love. RIP Dad😢
So much love to all of you. I lost my Dad during those first few disorienting months of lockdown in 2020. He slipped away in hospice, too, with a nurse holding his hand. It was so hard to not be able to be by his side. You know, he would have loved this beautiful song.
I heard this song on late night radio driving home from Dublin (Ireland) in the teaming rain.
Now I am going to listen to the whole album. Terrific song and such a beautiful voice.
Why has it taken me so long to discover this?
Paul, you might also really enjoy checking out Mike Farris' version of this amazing tune of Mary's. :)

Truly a great song, heard it on the show Yellowstone oh man it strikes a cord in your heart that's for sure. Check that show out Lotta great country songs in It.

Mercy is the withholding of Divine justice. Yes, we could all use a little of it now...
Im in tears realizing my daughter will never sing or thinknof this song for me
2023 and finally watching yellowstone. the first second caught me. gorgeous song. too real.
Being alienated by most everyone, even my kids. It’s the little things and some big ones. On the last days of my life I could use a little mercy ✌️🙏❤️
Just heard this on Case Histories from 2013 and had to look it up. Instant classic!
Damn ! What brilliant writing and so relevant for today. Bob Dylan would have loved this one.
Love you Mary! Just wish you'd stop making me cry! 😊 Your songs are wonderful ❤
Always used to ignore english songs in movies and serials. But yellowstone and this song, speechless.
First time hearing this song on Yellowstone… Cried. It’s such a great song.
One of the best songs ever written
Heard this song on a late night drive home a few years back on NPR. I come back to it once or twice a year now, sometimes for a good cry.
I love Public Radio! Most of my favorite music I've discovered while listening to an excellent PBS program. That's how I found Mary, Michael Kiwanuka, Gipsy Kings, Nathaniel Rateliff, and a host of others I love, but are not typically heard on commercial stations.
I know
The only song I know that helps me get through with my dad's cancer
The ‘Mercy Now’ album is by no means ripe with hope. The spilled blood of Mary Gauthier’s own past (detox and more) supplies the perspective in her truth telling. Potent lyrical bites are spicier and more rewarding than any gumbo she has served before. On the studio disc, Gauthier takes us around the corner to even darker corners, her poetic tongue wrapping itself around all sorts of agonizing situations.
How could 67 people not like this song?
Jealous that they didn’t write it
They should be made to forfeit their ears.
She reminds me of John Prine. I absolutely love this song.
God Bless America and its Constitution🖤💛
W O W.... Just WOW. We sure could use some mercy now.
I don't think I liked any of the Yellowstone characters much, until this song came on the credits and suddenly they were all my little peeps. -ha! Now, somewhere in the process of listening to it all day, I feel that way about everyone around. It's the right kind of sadness and the right kind of ownership. It's recalibrating my brain and reorganizing my rods and cones. Thank you.
Lovely tune 💖, greeting's from Dublin Ireland ✌️☘️🇮🇪
Heard it from series yellow stone love the show I have been watching it since 10hrs and still watching it. Love it and the song 🎵 fantastic 👏
Its so sad make cry for my brother i miss him pass away from cancer 3years ago an maybe this world can have a little mercy now no more gun shootings please God 😢
This is an incredibly beautiful song.
Funny how it takes something to trigger people to find what they never knew they needed, from a dark moment in their life, a friend in need plays you this song, maybe your parked in the dark somewhere and your stuck not knowing what step your going to take in life, or be it someone just watching a show and never knew they needed it. Be thankful that you are hear now, it's all because this is when you needed to find this amazing written and beautiful composed song thatan no one else could sing but her. It's been many years ago now for me since I heard it, but it was at the right time in my life. I keep a copy on hand for those moments. Glad your hear now, hope you pause and listen but remember the sunrise is worth waiting for.

As poignant now as when first written.
Will love this song as long as my vibration and energy is meant to be here
What a song; truly full of Grace. 💕
