Song plays and instantly im thinking and seeing my late father. Before I know it I have tears in my eyes. Then im smiling writing this comment knowing that it will be read by others who just get it. I can’t wait to be with my dad again one day.

I needed this today. Last month, my husband went into hospice care. My best dog who was only 5 years old died from cancer. A week later, my cat died from a sudden heart attack. Today, I had to have a dog that I have raised for 1-1/2 years put to sleep for attacking and trying to kill other dogs. And this afternoon, a litter of 5 puppies I rescued went to the vet and are hospitalized with parvo. I could sure use a little mercy now.

My father passed away in 2009. On the 10th anniversary of his death I sang this song in his memory and dedicated it to his son (my brother) and my son. The officers that policed under my dad when he was chief cried like babies. I cry every time I hear this song. We all could use some mercy now. It cuts to the heart and soul and so true. I loved my father, still do and always will. Rest in peace dad.

"As a songwriter, I'm always trying to go to the deepest possible place inside of me. Past the navel-gazing, past the self-conscious, to get to that 'we, cause deep inside of all of us is the universal. And that is an artist's job, to transcend the self. I'm in there, but then hopefully, it goes past that and it hits something far, far bigger and more important than me. That's what I'm aimin' for every time I write." Mary Gauthier
I got to see Mary live in an intimate Nashville venue last spring. Everything she sang reflected her intent and made songs we all could feel and relate to that night. She's one of the greats.

A poem for you dear Mary....
    Knuckle red, knuckles bleeding...
His knuckles red, his knuckles bleeding.
    My father fought and fought,
wars that could not be won.
He told me in his drunkenness state. What have I done?
He told me. Son. I killed and I killed.
I melted down three machine guns barrels.
I saw body on body of the dead.
Thousand we killed and I didn't want to see the face of the enemy.
I remember my friend left behind.
They are still buried somewhere in the Korean dirt.
He told me. Son, war is shit, war is hell.
I pray the old soldier can find peace in death.
In life, my father fought old wars everyday and every night.
    My father never found peace.
The damn wars tattoos and spoiled his soul.
Killed his hope and killed his vision.
And the wars are never-ending for men with.
    Knuckle red, knuckles bleeding.

I came here after listening to the streaming set played on iradiophilly of the 2018 Philadelphia Folk Festival. I cried when she sang “Mercy Now”. She says nowadays people beseech her to keep going; to keep working for our military veterans. Her work is grant funded. So thankful such positive forces are at work. “My church and my country could use a little mercy now. As they sink into a poisoned pit; it’s going to take forever to climb out. They carry the weight of the faithful who follow them down. I love my church and my country; they could use a little mercy now”. She ended with "This Land is Your Land" and talked about why it is the most played song from the PFF stage. It’s the same reason I keep coming back.
    Thank you Mary Gauthier.
