The Tacoma is lifted 3" with 34" tires, and has a factory rear locker. HOWEVER, if the weather is good, you should be fine the whole way. The only time Hurricane Creek is challenging is when it's been raining and there is a lot of mud. Everything else is basically just dirt roads.
Umm. Asheville? Hurricane Creek and Max Patch definitely ain’t Asheville. That’s TN border and I live here. No one around here thinks we are anything near Asheville
I am in NC and just starting to get into Overlanding after getting rid of a travel trailer. I am wondering if these trails are friendly for a full-size truck (GMC 1500)? What are your thoughts?
That's amazing! I work in the kitchen at Bogart's. A couple coworkers and I have Jeeps and one guy has an FJ. I really enjoyed y'alls video! You should come back sometime!
Rookie Comment/Question: I was watching an old 4xOverland overland video on water crossings and the instructor said first thing is to let the brakes cool down. Something I never thought of, but makes sense. I noticed in one of the water crossings, steam coming out of the wheels as soon as water splashed up on the brakes. Is the fear of cracks more of an old school concern that’s not as relevant with modern materials?
There are a number of things that go into consideration when performing a water crossing. Often when you see steam after a crossing it's from the exhaust. Some vehicles also have a 1 way valve on the differentials that allow air to escape when the diff gets hot, it's possible for them to suck air back in when the diff quickly cools. Many of us run a differential breather kit to relocate the point of intake/output for the diff to a higher location. To answer your question, generally I don't worry about it much. However if you come to a crossing after a steep or long downhill section of trail, it may be a good idea to let them cool a bit to prevent warping.
Can you recommend an overland shop within a hour or 2 from Charlotte? Just got a F-150 Tremor and want to set it up for some overlanding. I already have alot of camping gear including a Dometic fridge and Jackory 1500 power. Also looking to learn more about the back trails I could explore in a large truck.
Congrats on the new rig! Currently, Fox 2.5 coilovers at 3" in front, fox 2.0 shocks with Icon RXT leaf pack in the rear, Budbuilt skid plates, P&P Engineering sliders, coastal offroad front bumper kit, Dobinsons snorkel, KB Voodoo bed rack, Skyetent rooftop tent, 17x8 Fuel Vector wheels, 315/70/17 Maxxis RAZR MT' tires.
There are plenty of black bears in Madison county,nc. I was up there the last weekend in April of this year feeding the appalachian trail thru hikers hikers. On one of those nights before and after watching the sunset I saw 2 small black bears within about a 3 hour period of time.
Enjoyed video and like seeing more quality videos about Tennessee/North Carolina/North Georgia. Videos from out West are awesome - but I live in Tennessee.
Found y’all from the FB event on Sep 24th in Hickory. This and Uwharrie or places in TN are all my buddies go to places lol. Only had my taco 3 months on the 3rd, still yet to hit trails. Busy life with work and kids.

Do you have lockers or any suspension upgrades? I really want to plan a trip up there but have a full size truck with just 4x4. (Open diff)

Mostly yes. There are a few spots on Hurricane Creek that may be a little narrow but it should be doable!
That's amazing! I work in the kitchen at Bogart's. A couple coworkers and I have Jeeps and one guy has an FJ. I really enjoyed y'alls video! You should come back sometime!
We will! It was a fantastic dinner!

Very cool trip. Love the Christmas lights on the rig! Some nice driving on those mud ruts!
Thanks! We try to be festive!
The ice breaking up at 9:20 was great. Thanks for uploading!
It was definitely satisfying being the first to drive through all that ice.
Another great video. Great meeting you all in person @overlanderproject

Always carry along a chainsaw and several strong tow slings that can be both used to remove huge tree falls that could be blocking the trail.
It's not a true overland adventure until you have to break out the chainsaw!!
Facts! It was funny, we packed the chainsaw because the first time we did this route, in 2019, we had to clear a tree.
Awesome video guys
Thanks for watching!
Just came across your channel looking this route up. I really enjoyed this video!! Very well done. Just subbed!

About how far is that camp site from 40? Iam heading up there from kings mtn Nc in a few weeks for a solo trip.
I'd have to look at my track file to be exact, but it's roughly at the halfway point.
