  • ** This video is dedicated to Abu Asal, who passed away last week in Amman/Jordan. **
In this video I will show you how to prepare contour lines from a set of regular data points - the SRTM 30m elevation model - which is a raster data set. You will learn:
    - How to find the correct DEM for your project area.
    - How to set up a topography colour ramp & enhance it to show the local topography.
    - How to smooth the DEM raster using the Gaussian filter from SAGA.
    - How to extract contour lines from the smoothed DEM.
    - How to use the Geometry Generator to hide some contour lines.
    - How to use the Geometry Generator to control contour line thicknesses.
    - How to label the contour lines with custom formatted text.
    - How to save the contours and formatting inside a QGIS GeoPackage file.
    - How to save the settings in a Layer Style File, so you can use it for other projects.

In the next video we will look at how to contour point data.

This is an exceptional video that deserves far more views, even given the niche field. Hopefully the YT algorithm will take notice! Thank you for making and posting it, it's been very helpful for me as a new user. Subscribed :-)

Glad you enjoyed it Youtubicustafarian, and thanks for subscribing! The more people subscribe, like and in particular post comments like you are doing the more the YT algorithm shows the video link to other people. So my thanks for your contribution to promote this video so that others can see it too! QGIS is amazing. All the best, Andreas

      Thanks Eng. Lalzada,
I will ask Siegfried to pass your kind message on to his family. It was a shock for all of us. By continuing to work hard on your IT skills - especially QGIS - you will honour his memory. All the best, Andreas

Thanks so much Mr. Andreas. I have been so excited to watch this video with your step by step and very detailed clear explanation. I played forward and backwards several times. I also appreciate that you use one of your project in Kabul Afghanistan the City and Country that I really love and miss it. I am waiting for more videos.

You are most welcome Abdul! Most of the videos I make are part of a capacity building program for Afghan engineers, so I try to take examples from projects we are working on. Over the last few months things have been on hold, but I'm waiting to return to Kabul as soon as possible. All the best, Andreas

Hi! Thank you for your video.
I'm in the middle of trying to follow your advice, but I was just wondering: Is the SAGA Gaussian Filter not available anymore on QGIS? Couldn't manage to find it (I'm using Qgis Maidenhead, the latest version up to date).

Hi Inga, yes SAGA has disappeared but there is a way to link to it. Please see links below. The video is for QGIS windows, but I also included instructions for Mac in the manual. All the best, Andreas

Great video! I'm a newbie so I'm wondering first of all what is the process to bring in the 'Google Terrian Hybrid' layer that you are using into QGIS?..

You need to run this script in the python console: raw.githubusercontent.com/klakar/QGIS_resources/master/collections/Geosupportsystem/python/qgis_basemaps.py

Thanks for the video. I am successful in generating the contours. But when I am exporting to dxf (drawing) (instead of geopackage) contours are coming with out showing elevation values AND in longitude and latitude. how to get in UTM coordinate system

    • @GeosearchInternational
      @GeosearchInternational  10 месяцев назад

If you want UTM instead of geographic, why don’t you try to re-project the layer first. You can do it it right click - export and chose the appropriate CRS. All the best, Andreas
