- In this tutorial, you will learn how to derive a river network through the identification of Strahler Order, and how to derive the corresponding catchment (watershed) pertaining to a defined outlet location along the river. The tool which is being used for this delineation of catchment and the derivation of the stream network is the SAGA tool of QGIS.

This was so comprehensive and excellent. Preparing my thesis now and the software i tried to use to delineate my catchments wasn't working properly. This saved me. Cheers
Glad you liked it!
Excellent tutorial. Explained in a simple manner.

@@geodeltalabs Thanks.
It's AWESOME
very nice
Thanks bro
You are welcome :)
Thank you for your very powerful, and well simplified and articulated demonstrations. It always saves some of us out here. Please could you do something on how to generate knickpoints in ArcMap for us? I really need to generate Knickpoints for my studies but i am unable to do it, and I cannot also lay my hands on any RUclips video to lead me through the process. Thank you
thanks you very mouch
When I apply the fill_sinks function, nothing changes in my data set. It has the same values as the DEM before. As soon as I apply the Strahler-tool, I get only a diffuse image (with 12 Strahler-classes) and no flow lines even after filtering for exclusively higher Strahler-orders (Strahler-order >=9). What can be the reason for this?
Thank you
You're welcome
Thanks
You are welcome ☺️
great tutorial. How to fix th error saying "layers were not generated correctly" in the Fill sink execution? thanks
Could you provide a little more detail about the need to warp the projection at the beginning of the project? I tried the same and got crazy output when running the fill (I was using SRTM for Idaho-Wyoming)
hi, your explanation was too good, thank you for giving this video. but in current version of qgis there is no option for starhler order option. please tell me how to overcome this issue. thank you.
Can we do Stream Ordering here and also a couple of exercises like Drainage Density, Ruggedness Index etc. Thanks
Sir, I need a clarification on using filled DEM . Can we use filled DEM as the input for hydrologic modelling in models like HECRAS for the preparation of terrain?
Hi, yes, it should not be a problem.
Sir, kindly help me in determining the longest stream among the channel network in a catchment area.
Very clear explanation, thank you. If heavy rain falls, can we predict the possible flooded area by this method? I think we should also look at satellite images to detect flooded areas from the past in order to be sure. Do you suggest more?
Hi, a great question!
To do a more realistic and an accurate simulation of the flooded area, you will have to use some hydrodynamic simulation tools, particularly for simulating river floods. You can use what we have discussed in this tutorial to, let's say, derive the corresponding catchment which can be used in a hydrological model to simulate the discharge from that catchment under design rainfall conditions (since your interest is in simulating floods).
Once you do this, you can use the simulated discharge from the hydrological model as an inflow boundary condition to a hydrodynamic model which can actually simulate the water level of the river along the river stretch which you are interested to see whether it floods or otherwise. If you use a 1D hydrodynamic model like MIKE 11, you will only be able to simulate the water level along the river banks, and by seeing how high the water level rises over the banks, you might be able to get an idea of the stretches of the river which can actually flood under the given inflow boundaries. However, if you want let the flood water move into the flood plain, you will have to use a 2D hydrodynamic model such as MIKE 21 + MIKE 11 or HEC-RAS (recent versions) to see how much of an inundation happens in the adjacent flood plains. And yes, you may use satellite images to sort of validate your hydrodynamic models by checking whether the model is able to simulate the flood extents as closely as possible to the real historical floods :)
@@geodeltalabs Thank you very much. That is really helpful :)
Thanks for the wonderful video uploaded. Is it possible to derive multiple sub watersheds in qgis? If so please give instructions on the same....
GG, BROOOO, THANKS UUUUUU
Which Qgis version and saga version do you use ?
i am getting error in stahler order
The following layers were not correctly generated.C:/Users/harshit/Desktop/major project/Final/strah.sdatYou can check the 'Log Messages Panel' in QGIS main window to find more information about the execution of the algorithm.
Thank you so much for all your videos, May I know the algorithm for applying this technique, please?
Dear all, when I use Upslope Area and Run why try a error "SAGA Version: 7.8.2 (64 bit) Error: tool needs graphical user interface [Upslope Area]" and dont create basin? Thanks
Sir, After run strahler order it is not showing drainage network .It shows lots of pixels in B&W.. Plz suggest. I followed all steps properly
I am getting the same pixelated DEM. Looking for a solution to it.
Which version of the software are you using?? Why error in upslope step? Please reply
Brother can you also do a video on potential zones for Rainwater harvesting or ground water potential zones.
Hello
When I input data in Upslope area box and run, there is a error showing with missing parameters. So how can I fix this issue. If possible please explain for me. Thanks a lot for your very informative tutorial.
Which version of qgis you are using in this tutorial?
how to calculate how many number of 6th order streams are present in basin?
I followed your tutorial but it did't work with deriving coordinate x,y. It keeps resulting in the same number of coordinate and unable to calculate upslope area. Do you have any suggestion?
hi, I find your tutorials very helpful however my upslope saga tool is constantly giving error and isn't working, can you help me out with it.
Can I ask what machine specification you use with such a speed? In my case, I am using a very strong machine, with 32 GB Ram but still takes time like one to two mins to complete the tasks. Thank you for your work as well.
Can we specify the outlet point from our side if we know its exact coordinates?
May I ask , how do you make the DEM ?
I'm wondering which is the difference between using the reproject feature or simply exporting the layer in a different coordinate system?
when you export the layer in a different coordinate system you can't choose the method. with the warp function, you can choose the resampling methods
order 8 stream i.e. main river isn't coming after deriving channels under SAGA tool 'channel network and drainage basin'. What could be the reason. Thanks
The following layers were not correctly generated.
• D:/Anak Kampus/Teknik Sipil Undana/fill sinks (wang & liu)/area.sdat
You can check the 'Log Messages Panel' in QGIS main window to find more information about the execution of the algorithm.
Why ? Help me
I'm also having this issue. Did you find a solution?
thanks alot for this tutorial
i hafe a problem in getting the catchment area it can apear with me and give me a massage say the following layers were not generated.
Thank you for the lecture. It was very comprehensive and interesting. I would like to ask how one would go about delineating the catchment area if there are multiple outputs (for example into a lake), eg: Lake Malawi
Take multiple tile and merge
No saga tool in my toolbox?!
Hi, thank you again for another great video.
I do have a similar problem than with Troy Nguyen but with the next step - the upslope tool.
"Error: tool needs graphical user interface [Upslope Area]" (...) The layer were not generated properly.
How do we make sure that SAGA 7.8.2 is supported on QGIS please? It looks like that might be the issue.
Thank you!
I am facing the same problem man

@@robertbachmann1573 Thanks for the link
Thanks so much but how can I isolate the catchment area
Sir after running reprojected dem.. Its showing "The following layers were not generated properly".. Not able to generate Filled DEM layer.. Kindly help
My flow_dir_Raster is getting mixed up, it is much bigger on my map than my filled_Raster. So something is wrong with the KBS. Is it possible it sets on default? But it says in the properties it is in the same KBS. (I use the ESPG: 32643 UTM N43)
Good day! Is it possible to create different catchment from different outlets and combine all those into one map? Thank you
Yes, certainly. Once you manage to extract the shapefiles of different catchments, you can use the 'merge vector layers' function to combine them all.
hi, may i know which website this DEM was downloaded from? I am trying to obtain a high res DEM of Singapore! Thank you!
You may check this out to learn how to download a SRTM DEM from USGS: ruclips.net/video/yYWdxExabHo/видео.html
I have a doubt regarding it... What if we don't want to use the raster calculator..so can we go to the next step skipping that part??
Thank you so much sir for this . My research area is based on swmm. Can you help me out in making the shape file of the study area inorder to upload in SWMM..It would be so grateful.
Great Tutorial, I came across an error while running the Strahler Order input 'The following layers were not correctly generated.
• C:/Users/User/Desktop/BLAH/Tasarim/kayabasi 2/STRAHLER_ORDER.sdat
You can check the 'Log Messages Panel' in QGIS main window to find more information about the execution of the algorithm. '
How do I solve this problem?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
dont put space in path. your kauabasi 2 folder has a gap
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I'm using QGIS Desktop 3.26.3.
Please why is it that when I lunch a SAGA tool, I get this Message: SAGA version 7.8.2 is not officially supported - algorithms may encounter issues.
Also, SAGA tools do not work well. Please how can I resolve this issue?
Hi, did you get any solutions for this? I also getting this warning.
Is there any reason why you choose Sungai Pahang tributary for this tutorial?
Nice video, may you please provide the link wer u get those high resolution DEMs and Satellite images
Hi, the DEM used in this tutorial is just a 30 meter SRTM DEM. You can quite easily download them using USGS EarthExplorer. You might as well use an ASTER DEM for this. Refer to this tutorial where we have shown step-by-step how to download an ASTER DEM
ruclips.net/video/roryIlOEWlI/видео.html :)
There also a plugin called SRTM Download for QGIS plugins.qgis.org/plugins/SRTM-Downloader/

Its a nice video, very informative although unfortunately my DEM didn't produce the strahler order.Just watched the rest...Thank you.
Sorry to hear that. Did you try using a different DEM? you can download for free from USGS. Have a look at the following tutorial-
