Sir after running reprojected dem.. Its showing "The following layers were not generated properly".. Not able to generate Filled DEM layer.. Kindly help
thanks alot for this tutorial i hafe a problem in getting the catchment area it can apear with me and give me a massage say the following layers were not generated.
When I apply the fill_sinks function, nothing changes in my data set. It has the same values as the DEM before. As soon as I apply the Strahler-tool, I get only a diffuse image (with 12 Strahler-classes) and no flow lines even after filtering for exclusively higher Strahler-orders (Strahler-order >=9). What can be the reason for this?
Everything that you said worked smoothly till the upslope area from saga. It shows an error: tool needs graphical user interface. The layer was not correctly generated. Check 'log messages panel' to find more info. Sir can you please say what the solution to this problem can possibly be.
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I'm using QGIS Desktop 3.26.3. Please why is it that when I lunch a SAGA tool, I get this Message: SAGA version 7.8.2 is not officially supported - algorithms may encounter issues. Also, SAGA tools do not work well. Please how can I resolve this issue?
Go to plugins, select processing saga nextgen provider and install it. Then go to settings, select options, then processing, then providers and under providers you'll get the SAGANG, ensure you check all the boxes and on the saga folder specify the path where you installed it
Amazing tutorial. I have encountered a problem when I try to run my polygon clipping. It says 'wrong or missing parameter values'. What could be causing this?
1. Could be an issue with projections. Make sure the raster that you are trying to clip, and the polygon which defines the clipping boundary are both in the same coordinate reference system 2. Sometimes, its worth trying out tools from different providers to achieve the same functionality (such as clipping in this case) to see if any other algorithms work even though your first choice end up failing. For example, for clipping, there are different algorithms that you can try out provided by GDAL/ SAGA etc., which you can access simply by typing 'Clip' in the search box of processing toolbox.
you can try to merge the 4 different DEMs (raster -> miscellaneous -> merge) and generate one continuous raster. after that, the same steps can be applied.
Hi, it really depends on what your target/ objectives happen to be. For example, if you are doing this exercise to identify the total drainage area corresponding to a specific location on a river (for example things like designing a bridge, culvert etc.), then that would be your outlet point. That's just one example application case. There could be many other.
@@geodeltalabs Thank you, but I'd still like to ask for your recommendation on what I'm working on. I'm currently working on a lake/dam catchment using the SAGA tool. But i can't seem to identify the outlet even after using the flow accumulation tool to see the highest and lowest cells. I'll add though, that I'm afraid my raster isn't covering the span it should be covering.
Hi, thank you again for another great video. I do have a similar problem than with Troy Nguyen but with the next step - the upslope tool. "Error: tool needs graphical user interface [Upslope Area]" (...) The layer were not generated properly. How do we make sure that SAGA 7.8.2 is supported on QGIS please? It looks like that might be the issue. Thank you!
Hi, the DEM used in this tutorial is just a 30 meter SRTM DEM. You can quite easily download them using USGS EarthExplorer. You might as well use an ASTER DEM for this. Refer to this tutorial where we have shown step-by-step how to download an ASTER DEM ruclips.net/video/roryIlOEWlI/видео.html :)
Sir, I need a clarification on using filled DEM . Can we use filled DEM as the input for hydrologic modelling in models like HECRAS for the preparation of terrain?
Hello When I input data in Upslope area box and run, there is a error showing with missing parameters. So how can I fix this issue. If possible please explain for me. Thanks a lot for your very informative tutorial.
Great tutorial. However when I am trying to create the Strahler order, I am getting a very noisy results. I tried to solve the problem by matching the projected coordinate system but the issue still persists. I suspect it is something to do with qgis 3.28 and SAGA 7.8 is considered broken by current version

Can I ask what machine specification you use with such a speed? In my case, I am using a very strong machine, with 32 GB Ram but still takes time like one to two mins to complete the tasks. Thank you for your work as well.
Very clear explanation, thank you. If heavy rain falls, can we predict the possible flooded area by this method? I think we should also look at satellite images to detect flooded areas from the past in order to be sure. Do you suggest more?
Hi, a great question! To do a more realistic and an accurate simulation of the flooded area, you will have to use some hydrodynamic simulation tools, particularly for simulating river floods. You can use what we have discussed in this tutorial to, let's say, derive the corresponding catchment which can be used in a hydrological model to simulate the discharge from that catchment under design rainfall conditions (since your interest is in simulating floods). Once you do this, you can use the simulated discharge from the hydrological model as an inflow boundary condition to a hydrodynamic model which can actually simulate the water level of the river along the river stretch which you are interested to see whether it floods or otherwise. If you use a 1D hydrodynamic model like MIKE 11, you will only be able to simulate the water level along the river banks, and by seeing how high the water level rises over the banks, you might be able to get an idea of the stretches of the river which can actually flood under the given inflow boundaries. However, if you want let the flood water move into the flood plain, you will have to use a 2D hydrodynamic model such as MIKE 21 + MIKE 11 or HEC-RAS (recent versions) to see how much of an inundation happens in the adjacent flood plains. And yes, you may use satellite images to sort of validate your hydrodynamic models by checking whether the model is able to simulate the flood extents as closely as possible to the real historical floods :)
Could you provide a little more detail about the need to warp the projection at the beginning of the project? I tried the same and got crazy output when running the fill (I was using SRTM for Idaho-Wyoming)
Dear all, when I use Upslope Area and Run why try a error "SAGA Version: 7.8.2 (64 bit) Error: tool needs graphical user interface [Upslope Area]" and dont create basin? Thanks
When I use the Raster Calculator and select the Strahler Order to Greater than or Equal to 5, I just get pixelated nonsense at the end of it. I'm doing exactly what you're doing but it comes out all weird. Any idea why that might be?
Please help! When I used the SAGA "Channel network and drainage Basins", I could not generate the river_network shapefile as you did. I got the message The Layer were not generated. I can't move pass that step. What should I do now? :(
I have some kind of the same problem.... I can generate "Channels" BUT without any information.... Not one pixel on the screen or any information in my attributtable.... how is that possible? Really need help.... :(
After you generate the polygon, you can open up the attribute table, go to field calculator, and add a new field for area and perform a geometry calculation to get the area. Make sure it's all in a projected CRS.
