To make positioning easier, think of the Fundamental Save Position (FSP). It means, keep a straight line from the puck through the center of your chest, let that same straight line run through you to the middle post of the net, (this allows maximum next coverage at all times). The third part to FSP is the depth you are between the puck and the goal line. All of which are what makes up a goaltenders positioning. One can have a perfectly straight line running through them from the puck to the middle post, but if that goalie is on the goal line, the shooter is going to have a lot more net to shoot at instead of said goalie being at the top of their crease. When he says in this video to "use markers on the ice" for your angles. They are not markers, those are your angles, and you should be checking them at the beginning of each ice time. To be more specific then he was, your angles are, your zone's face off dots, where the blue line meets the boards, and the center ice faceoff dot. All in all, this video is not terrible, but certainly should be more specific for new goaltenders, as the things listed in the video are the most important features of a goaltender, just it was poorly explained.
@@milanek1527 well buddy, if you cant spend the time and read that, you wont ever have to worry about stopping McDavid's brake away's, cause you'll just end up as a starting goaltender for your local beer league.

I think something that will help the butterfly is having your knees under you more than infront. If your upper body is more above your knees youll have better recovery and ability to move where you want too afterwards.
Im just starting goalie going into my first camp and let’s say this is gonna help Aton for my five hole and my high shots Casue I’m a pretty small goalie and I only get beat up high
I'm an inline hockey goalie in Australia and it's against the rules for us to use roller fly or slides. So we cannot slide and have to shuffle. Looks like sliding would be a big advantage
Goalie is like any other sport or hobby. When you start you will suck and be lost but after putting in time and effort you will get the hang of it and eventually be a stud in net. You just got to start by going out there and doing it. You got this!!
You got this! I'm 10 and the first time I played I let in 7 goals! Last game I played I only let in 3 and this is still my first year. Just keep at it and you will get better
If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS.. I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid. Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...
This is terrible to hear man. That coach steered you in the wrong direction. It sounds like you don’t play anymore and that’s the last thing we want here. I hope you can give it another shot, go out there and have a good time. Hockey is about having fun and enjoying the game
I'm going to guess that that coach last played hockey in the 80's. Back then, the style was to stand up as much and as long as possible. If a player went to one side, goalies often stacked their pads instead of staying square to the shooter. At the time, it seemed OK, but watching it now, it looks absolutely ridiculous. I have to say, that never made much sense to me, so I always played butterfly, but that was pretty uncommon at the time. Maybe that's why I was so awesome. 😊 I left hockey because of a bad coach as well. I let that guide me as I coach my son's team.
Sadly that’s going to be my only video of me in net. I hurt my knee and can’t play goalie anymore. But I will eventually get someone to stand in and do more goalie videos
I actually bout them off a friend about 5 years ago. I think they are 32+1. They are to big for me tho. Sadly I’m done playing goalie. I can’t anymore with my knee messed up. More goalie videos will come just not with me in net
Angle, depth, square. Was it for me even as floorball goalie (if thats what it is called in english), i was very good but then my knees couldnt keap up so i had to stop. Now im thinking of starting as hockey goalie after 10 years off floorball and my knees back up good condition.
I can totally see that making sense. I imagine if I’m super tired it’d be easier to lower my hand instead if lifting it. Like letting my glove just drop compared to moving it yourself
Glove and blocker positioning in butterfly should not be this high, they should be coming down to close the gaps above the pads and the stick in front at an angle in order to have the puck come up into your stomach area, you’ll get better control of your stick when deflecting shots in either corner. You’ll get beat inbetween your arms if they don’t come down immediately. Just a tip, as a comment mentioned above, keeping your legs underneath you is essential for a good butterfly and important for recovery
Positioning. Be square to the puck, not the shooter. The shooter is not where the puck is. Butterfly. Your pads can overlap until they are on the ground. The second you are overlapping in the butterfly, you are covering less of the bottom of the goal. It also makes it harder to push off as needed as your compact and can push. Also, while butterfly is the default now, you need to be able to kick your leg out to the side when standing. Side to side. Rocking is a solid way to move yourself in and out and side to side. Gives you easy pivot points for facing shooters. There’s one thing you did not mention which is extremely important. Don’t follow the puck with your eyes. Follow it with your face. You want your eyes on the puck, but you want your head to be what is following it. Also, learn to read players. Most people are going to behave similarly. Obviously on breakaways it’s a lot of skill based things, but hockey, like most other things, is about behaviors. Also also, tell your D what the hell you want them to do. I prefer the D to pressure the puck carrier because it forces them to do something with the puck. You might want the shot and for them to cover the pass. You just need to tell them so you both aren’t bitching at each other about failures.
I played on a team for four seasons in my youth. Only ever wanted to be a goalie, but got assigned to defense because of nepotism. Never even got to try the role even though it was all I wanted to do in the sport. So... You know what else is cool about hockey? Violence. At least I learned how to lose a passion and lose a fight in that time.

@@Imfailingmath Hey, I'm glad you're getting a shot at it! The equipment for any position is expensive, but there's just so much more specialized stuff for goaltending.
