- Croton Plant Care Simplified! In this video I will explain how to help your croton go from cranky to happy. Croton care explained. The large croton, as seen in the thumbnail, is a petra croton I have had for over 3 years. This croton and I have had ups and downs, as I have moved several times in the last three years and after all this time I've finally gotten a hang of the care it needs to obtain growth and maintain its beauty.
Crotons are tropical plants native to S. India, but they are very common and sold widespread throughout the U.S. and North America.
I hope this video will help you whether you are a new or experienced plant owner.

@@greenmable475 u r right Miss, especially during the pandemic war, stay safe n healthy😊
All of the plants at the store I went to were just labeled "plant foliage" I'm pretty certain I got this plant and I'm so glad I found your video! Thanks :)
Mine was labeled "colorful tropical plant" lol. It looks just like her "before" image
I love when plants get appreciation they deserve.
I do too! 💚
I have a Croton...and had no idea I have a Croton! Your video is perfect timing as I knew it needed some TLC. I will now be moving it into more light. Thank you so much for the plant love tips!
😂 Wonderful! I am happy to help 💚
I just recently got 3 different croton and I've heard so many people complain about them but so far, so good and this video was extremely helpful. Thanks so much! I live in Florida btw so they're all over the place and that was my inspiration lol
YAY! Happy growing! I am so happy the video was helpful.
I just got a beautiful one today at Walmart for five dollars marked as “houseplant“! I’m so happy!
I keep saying I need to get some plants for my apartment balcony and this just might be one of the plants I get! I love the different colors of the leaves. Great video!
Thank you! Yay! Yes, this is an ideal balcony plant 💚
It seems Crotons are more likely to have a round full form if they are planted into a bigger container, in my experience.
I often see them in small containers like yours, growing mostly just upward. But I think it can only get so tall before it starts leaning over. Mine is in a large (wider) pot and doing excellent for years. It grows outward and upward and has a lovely, full, bush-like shape. Other than that, I have it in bright sunlight for several hours per day in the window and only water when it gets dry. Very easy to care for!
Been feeling like this was the solution to mine so thank you for confirming!
Gorgeous plant, I've been thinking about getting a Croton Plant but have always wondered about the care. Always working to keep my plants alive but I love having lots of them!! Thank you for this very informative video!
Thank you, yes I've really grown to love this one. I'm happy to help! 💚
This is a beautiful, hearty plant. Nice to learn about this pretty, croton plant. I definitely see these a lot in gift arrangements & they are colorful & shiny.
Thank you, this plant has been through a lot, I'm so glad it is still thriving!
I didn’t know this was considered a tropical plant. Nice. It’s thriving!😀
Oh yes! It's a sweetie 💚 thank you so much for watching
Crotons are the divas of all plants 🪴 and do not liked to be moved very much I’m learning💚💚
They are! 🤩😂Welcome and thank you for watching! 💚
I just brought a croton and I have it outside on my porch where it can receive a lot of sunlight. I like the colors on it. Mines has a more pinkish color leaves. Once it starts to turn cool outside I'm going to keep it inside my home.
We have had one for many years, we put it on the patio in the summer, and bring back in the fall.
Mine was attacked by spider mites that came through my screen. It looked totally dead. I cut it back it back to 2 inches of wooden stem. It was barren of leaves.
It stayed like that for over three months. I did not give up. Watered when almost dry. Fed it once. All of a sudden one day three leaves started growing and it’s been growing ever since. Thanks for the advice. I too thought the soil you used is a better mix. I’m about to transplant a new one I recently got. It’s so beautiful but root bound. I love the Croton. Watch your pets carefully. They are poisonous. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much I really really appreciate all your help with keeping Crotons. They’re really really beautiful plants and I’ve got three now. And I make sure they have lots of light too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
I love CROTONS ! And I love your energy 💚 Thank you for the video and so happy to have found you fellow plant friend 😊
Lucia!😍 thank you!
They are really pretty.
I apologize if the music is too loud, charge my head not my heart. Thank you all for getting this to 5K views! woohoo!
What’s the soil again? I missed it!! Or do you have your own brand of Croton soil?
What’s the soil again? I missed it!! Or do you have your own brand of Croton soil?
Love your video. I would love it even more without the music. It is distracting from the advices and info you were giving.
@@amberle28 thank you. I understand. 🤪
It wasn't that loud
those plants are in fantastic condition ... so they are obviously happy ;-) great job
we try! thank you!
I enjoy my croton! I give it direct light for a few hours in my southern facing window then pull it back. I water deeply and only when bone dry. Mine is prospering.
Great to hear that! They can be quite moody during the winter. 💚
I've been bringing back a sad croton that was in a low light neglectful condition and it's got some huge growth going on now. I've had to up-pot once already. I've had it since this spring i want to say.
Aww, yay. Yes, light is the croton's best friend. Thanks for watching. 💚
@@greenmable475 you have such a great channel!!
I forgot to mention in my original comment that all my plants are under plant lights on a timer (using a smart plug lol). Hardly any actual sun gets in and i have nothing south facing and a huge overhang outside the windows. But i also learned the hard way that plant lights are not created equal. (Lost some babies due to a weak cheapo light that i didn't have close enough.)
@@queenfae2182 it's been a long time since you commented this, but would you please tell me which plant lights you use? I recently got a croton and am in a similar lighting situation
Girl my croton look like the before..he looks so sad and I need to take care of him because my husband got him for me for our anniversary. So I have to keep him alive thanx for the help hun.
Hi Jessica! Thank you for watching! Yay I’m glad this helped. Yes I understand wanting to save and restore gifted plants from hubby, they are indeed special.💚
I got two of these! I love them; they are awesome!!!
Wonderful! Thank you for watching! 💚
Just purchased one today first time plant mother to this beauty. Came to RUclips as soon as I came home ran across your video. Funny thing we have the similar names. 😊My confirmation to stay and check out your video. Thanks so much, very informative. I'm in Oklahoma. Wish me luck 😁
thank you for this! I always seem to kill them lol
aww, I'm happy to help!
I just bought croton and was looking for tips. Came upon your page. Love your tips and I will be implementing them. Thank you.
Wonderful!! Welcome I am so glad you found me. Happy Planting! 💚
I just received my new baby in the mail from Etsy. I have it under a grow light as the sun didn't come out today now I want one of each kind. Yours is beautiful, great video.
Aww yay! New plant joy! 💚 thank you friend!!
I had no idea croton plants flower until mine did a month ago. I don't even recall seeing them flower back in home in Jamaica. I love this plant, it's very forgiving.
It is very forgiving 💚 One of mine flowered recently, I was so busy I did not have time to make a video about it until the flower had passed. 😢 Hopefully another one will and I can. Thank you for watching!
your crotons look awesome! in my experience crotons love lots of light, humidity and an organic seaweed foliar feed every week in growing season. king of the houseplants!
Thanks girl! Looking forward to seeing what other plants we have in common.
Good post. You have an engaging personality and smile. I love crotons too. The colors are even more brilliant when grown outdoors in full sun. There are hundreds of varieties but only a few are available. I have multiple plants of the same eight varieties.
Thank you for your kind words. This plant is so much bigger and brighter now, and I now have 4 varieties. it's time for me to do an update! 💚
I’m keeping mine in its container from the store. It’s great for beginners because it Ella you when to water it. The leaves flatten out ver obviously then perks up after a water. I bottom water
Your videos always make me smile ❤❤
These plants are beautiful! And in the night I use Solar lighting that helps to!
Thank you for this video! I just bought one and I love it!
Thanks for this great video on croton care!very helpful.
Wonderful! I am happy this information helped 💚
Thanks A Bunch. I Love Crotons
Great video. So informative. I really like Crotons. I had a Picasso paintbrush and it eventually passed away to plant heaven. I still own 4 of the many I purchased. One was attacked by mealybugs and it is still trying to come back. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I want the Picasso croton. AwwI can relate. My gifted croton that nearly died two years ago was growing back and doing well then two weeks ago I saw a huge web and fallen leaves, spider mites devoured it very fast. It's on life support 😔I will do a croton update video soon.
@@greenmable475 Oh no, not the mites. They are so annoying and sneaky. You really won't see them until you see that webbing. When I had the mealybugs problem that was on steroids, they put several of my plants in ICU. Many of them upgraded to stable but serious condition and then full recovery. Pest or a pest! Looking forward to the update.
The was you say croton lol I just planted 3 regular ones, and 3 twisted leaf ones. My granny had sooo many of them, and they became my favorite plant💜💜
Ooo I used to have one with twisted leaves, I want another one, those are so beautiful! 💚
Just got one of these beauties and your video is very informative. I need all of this, thanks for sharing!
Yay! I'm happy to hear that! Thanks for watching! 💚
She was very reassuring and informative and thank you 😊
That’s a beautiful plant! Absolutely love it
It's a darling indeed. Thank you for watching 💚
*_Wow gorgeous plant !! I can tell you are taking care of it well !!_*
Thank you, it has really surprised me doing so well 💚
I love croutons and your blouse is more than beautiful
So informative. Great video, thank you 🙏🏾 👍🏾
Thank you for being you! You make me smile! I've been wanting more Crotons. I found one of your other videos about Croton propagation and plan to try it today! Be Happy, Stay Happy and continue mak8ng others Happy! TY😊
Loved this video! I have 4 crotons too! I have a croton mammy, 2 crotons with the red, orange, and some yellow, (one of which is a rehab plant for me too) and 1 pink as well!
We have crotons everywhere, they are varieties.
I'm from Kerala, India 😁
I love your energy and your smile! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information for us. I saved it to my gardening tips playlist along with videos from Planterina and other amazing plant gurus on RUclips. I will say, the music was a bit distracting. Would you be able to feature more videos with lower music volume and less distracting beats so that your voice is the main part of this experience?
Thank you so much! I am long overdue for an update. This croton is still very happy and healthy. Yes, I apologize for the loud music, this was one of my first videos, newbie mistake lol.
Super helpful- thanks for all the detail!
I've always wondered how to keep a croton plant happy! Can't wait to implement your tips! :)
Great! I'm happy to help!
you are so engaging. i loved this video!
I'm so glad! 💚 Thank you!
I had a gorgeous big Croton 'Petra' for YEARS and had no idea of what it needed. Never fertilized or did ANYTHING other than water it. It was near the sliding glass door so it was getting enough light but it was falling over. I had it tied for three or four years and finally said "I need to repot this!!!" I did that last year and it immediately started dropping leaves, until it had almost none left. I was devastated. I moved it upstairs into a room with two big windows and a bunch of T5 lights. It seems like it is putting out some new leaves but it's leggy now... I watched another video and was considering chopping and trying to reroot the stems...
Very informative, thank you so much!
I have had 3 and was unsuccessful however because of your video I will give it another shot they died because I didn't know to manage them and because it is the winter maybe I will purchase a Grow light thanks for your information.
Thank you very much for the information. Godspeed
Thanks beutiful God bless you
I recently got a croton but my apartment doesn’t get much light. I’m going to get a grow light to make sure it’s getting what it needs. I hope I can take care of it well enough to keep the foliage colorful.
Hi! 😃Thank you or watching! Yes, a grow light should help.
Me too :( I only have east facing windows
@@audreya4075 East facing windows should pretty good. 👍🏾
I have a croton and she is very very happy under her grow light. I have her pretty close to the lamp and I have a terracotta watering globe + terracotta pot because I just couldn’t keep up with her watering needs. She has doubled in size and is doing well!
I am Montagnard Jarai indigenous love you plants
beautiful
I love these plants thank you !!!!!
Thanks for watching! I love them too. 💚
I love my crotons. I tend to over love my plants but this one is still going. I have mine outside under mostly shade but it will get some sun. I’m in zone 9b and it gets well over 110°. I will water maybe 1-2x’s a week. I tend to forget it so it may go longer without water but it has survived so far. They are easy to care for.
Thank you for the tips, these are great. My croton is totally green, so I'm excited to get it into a window and see if it colors up a bit.
Thank you! It should start sparkling with colors with more light! 💚
You got it going on girl
Omg... I just love plants! Great video.
Me too!! 💚☺️
I slipped up on mine :( You’re awesome thank you!
So beautuful!!! I have a few! Love them! 🙂👍
Wow never seen one fully droop before !
Ok I have to get a plant before I watch any more of your videos...💜💜💜
😂 Yes! do it 👏🏽
I just got myself a pothos and croton mixed hanging potted plant from Lowes. It’s so beautiful and lush! I live in FL. and I decided to place my plant outside on the patio. I have lots of Oak trees to help cover some of that harsh sunlight. I hope this is the ideal place to keep my plant. Sounds like it will do well outside than inside my home. I was thinking of repotting it in another hanging pot sometime. Should I do this after the winter months?
Thank you for your very informative video, your plants are beautiful 😍
Hi there, thank you for watching! It is generally a good idea to bypass repotting during the winter months. However, being in Florida could be an exception. I think it will be ok if you repot them since the weather is warmer.
I didn't know it took so much! thanks for sharing this
lol, Glad it was helpful 💚
Thank you this great video
Hmm, I have a mamy coton and it lived on my northfacing porch and grew like mad its inside for winder and still going crazy.
Please tell us what humidity level you keep them under? What sunlight exposure?
Where I work, we have a huge croton, bushy and healthy, about 4 feet tall. It’s in front of a bright window in a back room, and probably gets ignored most of the time, until someone remembers to water it. Doesn’t belong to anyone. It was probably a gift basket plant at some point. I’m thinking of taking a cutting….though they look like the type of plant that is prone to scale.
Nice video! Thanks for sharing! Subscribed!
I love my croton its sprouted its second flower this year love the smell it gives off but was wondering if its bad to keep it on the plant?
Love the plants!
Thank you for watching! 💚
Beautiful plants you have there
Thank you. 💚
What do healthy roots look like on baby croton? Thank you
I don’t know if I have a croton, the leaves look more like long thick nooodles but similar color way
Very challenging plant..
I love to break a challenge! 💚
Thank you, looking forward to growing a happy healthy plant 🪴
Hi What kind of fertilizer please? Thanks
Just wanted to mention, Croton plants are highly toxic to Pets! But, DANG they are pretty!
Thank you for your videos! 😊
Do you create your own homemade fertilizer? If so, what do you use? Thank you
Hello what kind of fertilize please thank you
I have a croton which really thrived in summer outside. As soon as I brought it back in house pre fall it died. No leaves on it whatsoever. I'm going to try to save it.❤️
Aww, I hope it comes back!
Did you get your croton growing again? I have about 7 leaves left they are dropping like flies.
I am a new plant mom and have a croton and I'm noticing that my leaves have been falling off here and there. Not multiples but maybe one every couple of weeks or so. I do have new ones coming but I'm worried the ones falling off are from the plant being stressed. Maybe it's my soil? Or my watering? And advice?
Thank u for all the info
Thank you for watching 💚
Bruh I thought my big croton was like 2 or 3 croton cause I bought it fully grown but the lady replanted a bit deep and it's got like 5 stems. I didn't realize JUST HOW big some of these can get. This thing is a unit
I love your content!💗
Thank you so much!! I have been so busy lately, but I will be back soon.
This was so helpful! I have this plant and scanned it to find out what it was because she just isn't growing! I thought the light was too much for it because it kept losing leaves. But now I find it actually wasn't enough and I was starving it off is humidity. Do you suggest maybe placing her outside for a few hours and then bringing her back inside. I have alot of direct sunshine in front but the trees are gone so no shade. I would love to see her grow like yours!
Thanks! You're amazing!
Aww thanks! That made my day! 💚
Great tips, thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching Freddie! 💚
Hello I enjoy watching you but my Cooter it’s in the east window I get about to our son direct sometimes one hour but the leaves it turns at the tips dry very dry Can I do for it please and thank you
