For some reason my 3 different crotons that I have will only survive if I leave them on my bedroom windowsill 😅😂if I move them they drop their leaves. It doesn’t get full sunshine there and you can feel the chilly wind sometimes. I think it’s also the fact I have a heater under it. It equalises itself I guess somehow lol?! It’s the only place they grow like crazy as well. I don’t know what I will do when they over grow where they are lol
@@AdriCr4ft that's interesting.. From when I saw this vid, I moved it and it was doing real great but it's just started to drop leaves :( maybe I'll try a radiator/window sill combo
Stefan Gunn but if he was doing fine before moving maybe you should have left it :) its a picky plant. I lost 2 leaves by moving it to other 2 different spots that I thought were ideal. One in each place. But it wasn’t working and I didn’t want to lose another leaf as it wasn’t a big plant so I moved it back to the window/ radiator and it’s been growing new leafs there ever since! Make sure the window you choose doesn’t get direct sunlight! My bedroom is fairly darkish even in summer. :) good luck
Stefan Gunn ohh I also forgot to mention! Make sure the leaves ain’t getting too much hot air😅 put your palm by your lowest leaf that’s on the side of the heater and see if you feel the heat and how much, if it reaches it and it’s too much the edges will kind of dry out. I try to turn it so less leaves are facing the heater and make sure the temp coming from it reaching the plant isn’t too high but warm. If you put your hand there and you can KIND of feel it but not too much, perfect. I guess they like warm temp since they come from hot places. Might be what’s making it grow 🤷♀️ just take everything I said with a pinch of salt because I am not a plant pro ☺️but I try my best. I also mist it every 3 days and clean the leaves and only water it when the soil is dry and when giving it water I do it like if I was to be drinking a glass myself 😂 because I know how picky it is and I am scared to kill it
@@AdriCr4ft wow dude, thanks for all your advice :D when it was originally on the window sill, it wasn't doing great. So once I moved it away as Betsy said, it started doing a load better. Not too sure why it's getting grumpy now :( but yeah, I will try a few things you've suggested :) there are still quite a lot of the leaves thriving so it should be all good
it always seems strange to me when i heard that that the things that i grow up with were poison or could kill you. i grew up in a yard in the Carribean with an overgrown croton garden of about 13 species. that garden was the safe house for me and my brother and sister until i was about 15 years old. it was where we play, hide, chill when it was too hot, learn to climb our first trees and much more. i can't tell how much croton leaves we ate back then when we were playing cow and goat. not to mention how many steams got broken and saps got exposed to our bare skins, since as boys on a tropical island, we don't tend to wear shirts at home. i even smoked a few croton leaves in my teen years as experiment. i am not denying that the plant could be toxic and that ones should not take care when handling them. i'm just thinking that we must have developed certain immunity to certain plants and foods that some people in other parts of the world have not.
I purchased my first Croton a few weeks ago. I had no idea what it was, I just loved the way it looked. I am very excited to have it, thank you for the helpful information!
I came upon mine by accident and it was the last one at the nursery and I immediately fell in love with its leaves. Mine has been thriving in my west facing living room. It sits next to a Begonia Rex and Dracaena Marginata and when the light hits the three just right, the colors are so beautiful.
Thank you so much Betsy, I really really enjoyed watching you talk to us all about the Crotons. I only have two now, and my second one I brought today as it was in dire straits, because no one had watered it for some time. I was struck by its stunning colours and it was so desperate for someone to take it before it snuffed it completely. So it’s had a good water now. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too
I have 3 already. Star dust, Petra, and many. I love them so easy to take care of and beautiful to looks at. Sadly mine are turning green again because I have them inside for the winter and it's been mostly cloudy for the last month. I want to collect them all, definitely an underrated plant. Love the energy for crotons in this video!

Same, I have killed every plant given to me. But my croton is just a growing. I received it when my stepfather passed, so it's important to me not to kill it.
Hi, my croton is 2ft tall and the leaves are falling off from the bottom. I rather it to look full. Can you do a video showing how to propagate to grow new pieces. And one to splice for for fullness. I know I most likely butchered the proper terms, so I hope you understand what I'm asking. 😩😂😂😂
Well presented. I'm glad you mentioned the toxicity to pets, (kids, too). I just picked up my 1st croton, and will try and remember not to pinch off the leaves without gloves. It's truly a gorgeous plant.
I have a croton, it was indoors for a few years and barely grew at all. Last summer, I put it on the porch on the East side of the apartment. In just 3 months it nearly doubled in size and the beautiful red foliage (red is my favorite color). I am doing the same thing this year, I love that red color.
Mine is at the garden facing west. It's summer now here in the Philippines (36C) and they are in direct sunlight from 12pm to 4pm. They're doing great and no leaf burn as long as you water them in the morning daily.
Well, what a delightful person. As bad as it is I bought a croton without knowing it's care and now I feel a lot more prepared and have moved it as it was at risk of cold draughts so...very good to know. Thank you very much Ms Begonia for taking the time to make this.
FYI, they actually can survive in a dry hot environment! I live in southern Arizona. I keep my croton outside on my porch and it seems to be okay. The humidity can get as low as 16%, typically around 22%. Temps vary from 64°F to 99°F (on my covered porch, it gets much hotter outside of it lol) Of course I keep it out of direct sun (my porch is covered with a 75% shade cloth). The only thing that it's suffered from is direct light when I was trying to find a spot it would like out here, the first spot got a little too much sun and burned some of the leaves. Now that I've found that perfect spot it's thriving I would say. So, they can survive and even thrive in a dry arid environment so long as you don't let them dry out for too long. Misting them once in a while helps too 🙂
I bought 3 Crotons.. gave one each to a family member and kept one for myself... I get a lot of sun in my southern facing backyard..After this video I am nervous leaving in a container in yard.. I live in NY where we don't get strong sun most of the year, and the only way my Croton is happy is if I put it in direct, hot sun during the summer. Yes, some of the older leaves get a little burnt on the tips, but direct sun is the only way that mine will develop new growth. Just some food for thought!
Good luck! I will admit that one of mine lost some leaves this winter because it was just too grey in Paris and it wasn't getting enough light. It's since bounced back but those old leaves will never grow back unfortunately. My other Croton, 'Mrs. Iceton' did fine and is now putting out plenty of new growth already!

I got a croton today haha. I had seen them around for a while and been really into them so figured why not when I saw a really big one at the mall today for 3 euros.I do have it in my bedroom which I believe has a south facing window since the sun show up super early and I do have succulents of all sorts there and they do really good, although my fittonia enjoys it here too and doesn't need misting. The humidity outside in my area right now is 85% but succulents seem to be really happy here even with that (I guess because we never get really cold and the sun is REALLY hot).
Hi ! I just bought a gold dust croton in my supermarket for only 1.99€ !! He looks very sad for the moment but i Will follow yours instructions and hope he Will be ok !! Thanks 😊
Hey Betsy! Love your style of sharing by the way! So I live the Caribbean and while growing up my grandmother had every which kind of these (which we pronounce as "crow-t'n" here) in our yard and curb. They tolerate the heat pretty well mid 30's Celcius and the colours are super vibrant with loads of varieties! Nice to see them now popular in your area. Best wishes. Go get you some more...🙌😁
I rescued 4 little pots of these beauties but they were super crispy and sad, im hoping to save them I trimmed all the dead leaves and atems but Id like to get some advice in how I can make them thrive. Im so glad I came across your video Im going to subscribe and follow you on your social media ❣
Good video post. I didn't know crotons were an indoor plant. Mine are in the garden in full sun. There are hundreds of varieties but only a few are available for sale. I have nine varieties so far and always looking. That big one you have is called Mammy. I enjoy your personality.
I think a lot of the plant community show a lot of hate towards Crotons simply because they fail on them Ivy's to spider mites. I ended up with my first Croton mixed in with a clearance planter from Lowes. She wasn't looking good but I found their soil mix online, then put it in a west facing window with a mini blind. To filter the light I bought a tention bar and a 4 dollar white sheer curtain and popped this in behind the mini blind. This created the perfect filtered light and all my plants are thriving because of it. The happiest Croton is one you never move.
Every single croton I have ever had in my possession has croaked. And quickly. As a florist and avid plant collector that’s extremely discouraging. I avoid them at all costs.
I got a gold dust croton recently and I was so excited to get another one after killing one over a winter. A month later it was OVERTAKEN by spider mites! I fight mites on other plants but I've never seen such a wild escalation. I'm gonna have to check it way more often 😬
Awesome video! I was so glad that you mentioned the part about pinching them to promote bottom growth! I am going to try that. Very informative thanks!
Loved your video! Just bought one of these babies tonight. Looks like there are 2 plants in the pot. So I'm thinking of repotting and separating them! Any suggestions on that? Also, any advice on propagating?💚🌿 thanks again for the video!
I have a Petra Croton. I got it about 3 months ago & it had around 7 colorful leaves when I got it! It now has ... ONE LEAF LEFT that has been hanging on all alone for about the last 2 months! So now, I’m scared to even look at the damn thing! Hence the reason I’m here watching your video! I’m trying to figure out how to get it to produce and grow. Lol
I love my croton (now 2 years old) but it needs quite a bit of attention. In summer it likes more water (like more more) and it got kinda big but now the winter months have come back and it goes yellow, leathery and drops leaves. It gets too cold and the sunlight is bad so it rlly doesn’t thrive, I really need to keep an eye on it to make sure it’s doing well. I went away for 1 night and now I’m back it looks like it needs a good loving. Repotting is also a problem as I’m running out of room that has sunlight, but I also don’t want to cut it back 😔
Hi Betsy thank you for this video I ve just got a croton plant and I know that they don't like to be moved ? Could you explain more about that, does it mean moved around the house ?
@@betsybegonia Are they the type that instantly die when they sense cold conditions or its gradual? Because I want to at least tell if they're not handling the cold, so I can quickly move them indoors. ☺
How do these guys feel about grow lights? ❤️❤️ I love your crotons I just got my first one and it’s already being fussy LOL!!! Still love it though I will master this plant if it’s the last thing I do!!!!!
I had mine on porch all summer and then brought it in when it started getting cold. Now all the leaves are falling g off. I see new sprouts but have never had it do this. I have had it 5 years or longer
I have a gorgeous croton than lost lots of its leaves due to me neglecting my plant-mothering duties, and now it has an awkwardly long stem with new growth only happening at the top... is there any hope of regaining growth where the leaves dropped? would pinching help that?? From one Betsy to another, all the best to you!
Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. The best you can do is try and hope for a good outcome. It won't put leaves out where the ones have been lost, though. I'm sorry.
im not an expert in crotons but you could try bending the plant over and tying its top down lower - this should send hormones out to the lower branches to start growing alternatively wait until the top has a good few strong growing leaves then cut it off with a sharp blade, use some rooting hormone on the cutting and transplant it into some rockwool or seedling soil and put under gentle light somewhere that is warm and has high humidity - a greenhouse or propagator. keep misting the leaves daily and hopefully the cutting will take root before it dies so you can repot and have a brand new plant of your prized variety its also possible that the original will begin to put out side branches in the same way as the bending method due to hormones - but the stress and loss of its last remaining leaves may put pay to that. but its worth a try those would be my suggestions, good luck
@@jackssmirkingrevenge9365 thank you! I actually took a cutting of it about two months ago and it has successfully sprouted roots!! A little nervous to pot it up, but I'm glad that I've been able to salvage what I could :)
@@betsymelchers8807 heh im glad.. what was your method of rooting etc? as long as theres a good few healthy roots then go for it and pot up.. its like a growing child they need to be given room etc just make sure the medium you pot into isnt too rich in fertiliser etc. plenty of drainage/perlite and a fairly weak compost until its growing on strong and showing signs of wanting food take care 😁
Hey lovely lady! I just bought a beautiful Petra Croton today and I was wondering about plant food/fertilizer.. I'm not sure what to buy and how often! Help ♡ Thanks in advance
I've personally just been using a regular houseplant fertilizer that's basic and balanced which I found at the local hardware store but I hope to dive a little deeper into fertilizers this year in my videos.
I just bought a baby crouton & wanted to figure out what room was best for it So like my office is west facing & 50-55% humidity No direct light reaches my desk where I want to add color & life to help with work from home :)
I’m on Croton #2. The first one i bought, i was a total newbie and placed plants where i thought they looked best. Well my first one i over watered and it didn’t get enough light. So my second one i have near an east facing window in my bathroom.... i thought i watered it properly, letting it dry out a bit like you said, but the next day it dropped 2 leaves! Now I’m panicking! Is there anything i can do to keep it from losing any more leaves? 😳 Melanie
Hello. How long does it take for a croton to get all those beautiful colors? Mine has some red spots here and there and new leaves begin to display some discoloration, but although it has lots of new beautiful leaves, they mostly look green. It is by my East or West window, lots of sun. I’ve had it for about 5 months, how long before it looks mostly redish? Thank you.
Hi! I've had my croton mammey for a few months, and it's been doing great. But yesterday I was checking out the new growth and noticed that the new leaves have become very tender and limp feeling. They arent necessarily drooping, but the texture of the new leaves has changed from being quite firm like the rest of the leaves to being very delicate and sort of flimsy. Should i be worried? Am i over watering, or underwatering? I use a moisture meter to check on her every other day and wait to water her until the moisture reads "4" which is still in the "moist" range, "3" being the first "dry range", if that makes sense? This is round 2 of her putting out new growth, she seems to put out 4 new leaves at a time, and i just dont remember the new leaves being quite so soft and tender last time. Thank you!
I’m sure you’ve sorted this by now but I have some cal mag fertilizer on hand bc I keep orchids and when a houseplant has soft new growth I give it some. Sometimes they need a little calcium. Other ways to do this might be boiling egg shells and using the cooled water to water the plant with, but I don’t have experience with that personally and worry about mold and stuff with organic fixes like this.
Mine is marked as direct “brightest light , patio plant”. I also read they don’t tolerate change very well and don’t like direct sun light and need moisture. These things seem to conflict. If they can go either way which is better, constant decent indoor light with a humidifier even if it’s not the brightest light ever and don’t move it at all ... or out side sun? I thought I was doing it a Favor moving it outside on sunny days to visit the sun light but it’s dropped leaves which means stress. So I don’t get what it prefers lol
I bought crotons, calatheas and snake plants. They've all done fantastically except the calatheas, which died almost immediately in spite of all the youtube tips I was able to find. The crotons are gorgeous - especially the "mammy" ones.
My new croton is in a west facing bathroom window ( great bright indirect light & humidity). It's not doing great and I can't figure out why. The leaves just stay wilty.. but falling off, but just..bleh! Any advice?
How do I encourage growth? I have one leaf left on my Petra Croton and it’s been hanging on for about 2 months. But it doesn’t seem to be growing. Had it in a sunroom. Saw your video and moved it to a little less direct hot light. Any other suggestions?

Hi ! I just bought a gold dust croton in my supermarket for only 1.99€ !! He looks very sad for the moment but i Will follow yours instructions and hope he Will be ok !! Thanks 😊
Here in the Philippines they love basking under direct sunlight. Glorious!
I luv the colors! I know they grow very well in tropical climate.
Good video post. I didn't know crotons were an indoor plant. Mine are in the garden in full sun. There are hundreds of varieties but only a few are available for sale. I have nine varieties so far and always looking. That big one you have is called Mammy. I enjoy your personality.
Thank you. Detailed and to the point. I’m new to plant life and purchased one. I will let you know how it goes.
Have a beautiful day. 😀
I just got one last weekend and I love it so much! I wish people gave it more attention, such beautiful plants!
I love their funky vibe.
Every single croton I have ever had in my possession has croaked. And quickly. As a florist and avid plant collector that’s extremely discouraging. I avoid them at all costs.
I love crotons!! and I love your personality :) Thank you for your video!
I got a gold dust croton recently and I was so excited to get another one after killing one over a winter. A month later it was OVERTAKEN by spider mites! I fight mites on other plants but I've never seen such a wild escalation. I'm gonna have to check it way more often 😬
Thx for the tips. I have a croton and your tips were very helpful!
Thank you for this information ! I love these plants they are so beautiful! 🙂
Yes i didnt know what it was when i got it...and its super easy to grow.... not fussy like my other plants...
Love the presentation! It was very thorough and entertaining. My croton thanks you.
Thank you. 🙂 I'm glad you found this useful.
I just got my first today! I’m so exited :)
Awesome video! I was so glad that you mentioned the part about pinching them to promote bottom growth! I am going to try that. Very informative thanks!
Thank you so much for watching, Natalie! I'm glad you found this helpful. 🙂
Thanks for making a fun plant video! They are hard to find Lol
It's a pleasure for me! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Thanks for saying hi. 🙂
Would a pebble tray help with humility with this plant?
Thank you!
Great videos too!
Couldn't hurt. 🙂
Perfect timing I just bought my first one today!
Just purchased 3 of hopefully things will go I put them outside during the day
Loved your video!
Just bought one of these babies tonight. Looks like there are 2 plants in the pot. So I'm thinking of repotting and separating them! Any suggestions on that? Also, any advice on propagating?💚🌿 thanks again for the video!
I just got my very first big one as a gift, and I hope it will thrive!! I don’t get much sunlight in my apartment but I hope it will do well.
I hope so too! Good luck. 😊
Have you tried crotons to set on artificial light if they like it especially when you got not enough light from the sun? Will they like it?
Gorgeous plants. Their name reminds me of a Star Trek alien lol.
Totally!
Really good videos. Lots of great info. Does make me laugh when I hear the phrase "pinch it off" that means something different over here. 😂
MICHAEL! 😂
@@betsybegonia sorry did I lower the tone? 😂 Gonna check out some. More of your videos now 👍
Your video was really helpful! Thank you so much!
Lol
Betsy I every time I watch your videos, I think to myself, she would make a great stand up comedian. Just sayin!
Super helpful THANK YOU
I agree
So true
U too the words out of my mouth
I love my croton (now 2 years old) but it needs quite a bit of attention. In summer it likes more water (like more more) and it got kinda big but now the winter months have come back and it goes yellow, leathery and drops leaves. It gets too cold and the sunlight is bad so it rlly doesn’t thrive, I really need to keep an eye on it to make sure it’s doing well. I went away for 1 night and now I’m back it looks like it needs a good loving. Repotting is also a problem as I’m running out of room that has sunlight, but I also don’t want to cut it back 😔
I just bought my first croton the other day and she needs to be repotted. Do you think my succulent soil mix would work as long as I keep it watered?
Same question
There beautiful plants 🌿
they actually don't sell them in my nursery for some reason!
But there beautiful 👍😍
Oh, that's a shame! I always find 2-3 varieties here in Paris. I hope you can find one if you really like them! They really brighten up the room.
Hi Betsy thank you for this video I ve just got a croton plant and I know that they don't like to be moved ? Could you explain more about that, does it mean moved around the house ?
solved my problem - my croton plant got a little too cold overnight in the windowsill of our south facing window.
Propagation of them would be great, if you know how and have had progress with it???
I live in hardiness zone 10 (Sydney). I'm wondering if I should take them inside once it's winter here (night temps range between 5C-9C on average).
Yes I think so. They need a range of about 16° - 30°C.
@@betsybegonia Are they the type that instantly die when they sense cold conditions or its gradual? Because I want to at least tell if they're not handling the cold, so I can quickly move them indoors. ☺
@@Jehoshabeath They are very sensitive. Mine began to die after a few weeks of grey skies in Paris and not enough light. :(
How do these guys feel about grow lights? ❤️❤️ I love your crotons I just got my first one and it’s already being fussy LOL!!! Still love it though I will master this plant if it’s the last thing I do!!!!!
I have never grown them under lights.
@@betsybegonia oh okay thank you still though
my Mommy Croton's leaves are not curley any more? do you know any sulution for that
I had mine on porch all summer and then brought it in when it started getting cold. Now all the leaves are falling g off. I see new sprouts but have never had it do this. I have had it 5 years or longer
This is such a goof positive video!! Do you have any tips on taking care of Boston ferns?
I killed the only one I ever bought. It was one of the very first plants I owned. Not enough humidity + overwatering.
I'm sorry.
im not an expert in crotons but you could try bending the plant over and tying its top down lower - this should send hormones out to the lower branches to start growing
alternatively wait until the top has a good few strong growing leaves then cut it off with a sharp blade, use some rooting hormone on the cutting and transplant it into some rockwool or seedling soil and put under gentle light somewhere that is warm and has high humidity - a greenhouse or propagator. keep misting the leaves daily and hopefully the cutting will take root before it dies so you can repot and have a brand new plant of your prized variety
its also possible that the original will begin to put out side branches in the same way as the bending method due to hormones - but the stress and loss of its last remaining leaves may put pay to that. but its worth a try
those would be my suggestions, good luck
@@jackssmirkingrevenge9365 thank you! I actually took a cutting of it about two months ago and it has successfully sprouted roots!! A little nervous to pot it up, but I'm glad that I've been able to salvage what I could :)
@@betsymelchers8807
heh im glad.. what was your method of rooting etc?
as long as theres a good few healthy roots then go for it and pot up.. its like a growing child they need to be given room etc
just make sure the medium you pot into isnt too rich in fertiliser etc. plenty of drainage/perlite and a fairly weak compost until its growing on strong and showing signs of wanting food
take care 😁
Hey lovely lady! I just bought a beautiful Petra Croton today and I was wondering about plant food/fertilizer.. I'm not sure what to buy and how often! Help ♡ Thanks in advance
I've personally just been using a regular houseplant fertilizer that's basic and balanced which I found at the local hardware store but I hope to dive a little deeper into fertilizers this year in my videos.
If my croton were to revert back to green due to insufficient light, would new growth come in colorful - given that I give it proper lighting?
Yep, it should help.🙂
I just bought a baby crouton & wanted to figure out what room was best for it
So like my office is west facing & 50-55% humidity
No direct light reaches my desk where I want to add color & life to help with work from home :)
I like the curly leaf one...i have one but its not doing well..
Melanie
Great video thank you !!
Thank you.
I was just gifted a Petra Croton and a Waffle plant so I could use all the help lol. Thanks for the tips!
I just got two of this species and I’m really trying not to let them die like everyone says they will 😭❤️
What are the plants on the wall in the background? Very cool!
My croutons are LITERALLY my favorite plants. All of them!
I love croutons too.
when you pinch the plant to spread out do they get new groth at the top again in case i want it to go higher
I just got one and I wanna see how many days should it be watered plz answer
Mine is marked as direct “brightest light , patio plant”. I also read they don’t tolerate change very well and don’t like direct sun light and need moisture. These things seem to conflict. If they can go either way which is better, constant decent indoor light with a humidifier even if it’s not the brightest light ever and don’t move it at all ... or out side sun? I thought I was doing it a Favor moving it outside on sunny days to visit the sun light but it’s dropped leaves which means stress. So I don’t get what it prefers lol
New plant dad, thanks for the help. I immediately moved my lil dude away from the fan that goes 24/7 like 7 inches below em
Thanks Betsy, very helpful!
Do you have any advice on fertilizing?
I bought crotons, calatheas and snake plants. They've all done fantastically except the calatheas, which died almost immediately in spite of all the youtube tips I was able to find. The crotons are gorgeous - especially the "mammy" ones.
I've been avoided buying one of these because I heard they are really hard to keep. I think I might try now. :)
My new croton is in a west facing bathroom window ( great bright indirect light & humidity). It's not doing great and I can't figure out why. The leaves just stay wilty.. but falling off, but just..bleh! Any advice?
Good information thanks
How do I encourage growth? I have one leaf left on my Petra Croton and it’s been hanging on for about 2 months. But it doesn’t seem to be growing. Had it in a sunroom. Saw your video and moved it to a little less direct hot light. Any other suggestions?
You have convinced me to buy one!😀
Just got one .... well 3 so thank u for this vid
I have a croton like 3ft tall and has some white fuzzy stuff on the leaves and I’m so worried. :( I don’t know what to do
