  • Winter in Ontario Canada gets cold, but some motorcyclists aren’t quite ready to trade in their two tires! If you plan on riding your motorcycle during the winter months, here are some quick things to remember for winter riding.
    1) Make sure your motorcycle is winter ready. Install windshield to shield you from the cold wind. Wider windshield will help push the wind around the sides of the rider, hence providing better protection. Heated seat and heated handle bar grips are expensive but not impossible to have. Breaks and clutch are functional. Break light and signal lights are working. Tires have good treads and grips. Top up gas, break fluid and clutch fluid. Add antifreeze when needed or if necessary.
    2) Always drive slow in the snow covered roadway. Use signal lights or hand signals actively when you’re turning, changing lanes and stopping. So other motorists know what you’re doing ahead of time.
    3) Dress in layers to stay warm. Wearing a proper motorcycle riding jacket that has sufficient elbows, shoulders and back protectors is advisable. Thermo or snow skiing jacket with body protectors is appropriate, but never wear long and bulky coats especially if they do not have body protectors. Consider wearing a full face helmet, winter gloves, boots and special socks. Weatherproof pants and thick pant liner. Electrically heated clothing. Balaclava and scarf can also be beneficial.
    4) Pay attention to your tires. Such as the tires not softening enough to get good grip on the road. Therefore, you will need to compensate by taking it a little easier on the turns.
    5) Watch for compacted snow, ice and those nasty potholes and debris in the road surface. Usually asphalt pavement, were snow plow trucks removed broken pieces of the pavement.
    6) The following suggestions are just some of the items that are essential to riders, whether you are riding LONG DISTANCE with a group or doing a solo ride. Pack some food, drinks, medicine, your wallet with everything in it that you’ll need, and a general map of the area you’re traveling to. Extra battery or power bank for your cellular phone...
Stay safe this winter and if you are riding make sure you take all the necessary precautions when it comes to the weather!
