  • Amid tensions between Moscow and the West over the Ukraine war, the Russian space agency said the country would quit the International Space Station after 2024. WSJ breaks down the design of the spacecraft to see whether it could function without Russian parts.

ISS was supposed to be retired and deorbited in 2015. It's components were built with a 10 year lifespan. It is now pushing passed that with some core components of the station hitting 20 years. And now its retirement has been pushed to 2030.
It is not just a political issue there is an engineering and safety issue.

We have maintained buildings for hundreds of years and the B-52 has not only been maintained for 70 years but it's numerous safety flaws have now been addressed. At some point we have to learn how to maintain and improve space stations such as by replacing damaged solar panels, heat radiators and micrometeorite shielding blankets as well as clean out the bacteria and mold. We can't just assume our space stations are disposable forever.

No. Only the Zvezda module is used for that. The engines on the Zarya were permanently deactivated decades ago. If they were still active, and they fired those engines, you would damage or destroy everything behind it. Please improve your research, WSJ.

The ISS is a lot more complex than it needed to be because at the time they were still trying to prove that the space shuttles hadn't been a huge mistake. We could have a much simpler but huge space station during the 80's if we hadn't abandoned the Saturn V and Skylab technology. The Russians did have a station at the time simply by docking three smaller ones launched on conventional rockets together.

Yes, it’s a ‘Russian’ module in the sense that they built and launched it, but the U.S. paid for it almost in its entirety, so I’m willing to bet that even if the Russians could hypothetically detach their section and leave (they can’t b/c they’re dependent upon the U.S. section for power and orientation), they won’t be allowed to take Zarya that easily.

      @@ryantetreault3447 - that’s a negative though,
first, the Russian Orbital Segment is practically bolted on permanently… decoupling it would require a bunch of spacewalks and tons more internal work, and that alone is not feasible…
second, and most importantly, the Russian segment depends on the US segment for critical electrical power via the solar array wings on the truss segments… sure, 3 of the 6 modules have their own solar panels, but they are largely degraded already and cannot supply electricity to the entire segment… decoupling the entire Russian segment will render it useless and unfit for continued Cosmonaut staffing… and that will mean basically a stop to all current Russian human spaceflight programs…
if they’re gonna go and build a new station, good luck to them because, pre-sanctions, they are so cash strapped that the delays they faced launching just one module will make any delays on the US and International partners’ side look like a quick break…
by the way, the first ISS module that the Russians built (Zarya)? its actually owned by NASA… they had to pour in funds to Roscosmos just to get it launched back in 1998…
so in short, the Russian segment will stay put on the ISS… they basically have no choice at the moment…
P.S. another indication of the continued commitment of the Russians is that they went ahead with a crew ferry exchange program with NASA, which sees Russian Cosmonauts flying on Crew Dragon to the ISS and NASA/Int’l partner Astronauts flying on Soyuz… the next Crew Dragon flight to the ISS for crew rotation already has a Russian Cosmonaut as part of the crew, and they are launching next month

While the Zarya (FGB) module is part of the Russian segment, and was made in Russia, it is property of the US Government. It would stay behind with the American segment. It has attitude control engines, long dormant. If these could be revived, it's possible the ISS could go on. It would lose Zvezda's life support capacity, but would not have to support 2 cosmonauts, either. Other life support elements could continue functioning of a smaller crew.
