I saw this movie last night and it did a good job conveying a central premise, which is: there's good and bad in every culture. Unlike movies like Dances with Wolves, this movie did not suggest that one culture or the other was the more noble, more deserving, more righteous one. Instead, it told the absolute truth about it all, which is it's not about whether you are white or Native American, but how well you do at being human. Humans behaving badly are to be dealt with, and as this movie points out that's a truism among Natives as much as whites.

Im so confused by this comment section. From the look of the trailer, does no one seem to see that the movie is not portraying whites as saviors or Natives as savages? It's literally saying everyone is wrong and is a killer. I mean how the fuck does Christian Bale's character look like a savior. The American characters in this movie look like theyre loosing their minds, and somehow you get "white savior propaganda"? You cant blame a movie for using language used at the era of its depiction to feel accurate. Its like complaining that they're not using m4s to make it more contemporary when it would make zero fucking sense to do that. This looks like a movie with no good guys. The tagline is "All are hostiles". That should make it pretty easy what lens to view this movie through.

    • @andrewmcauley5202

Don't try to rationalise it. These days everything has to be viewed as either extreme left wing propaganda or it's preying on someones culture/beliefs/sexuality. Everything pretty much offends one camp or another (or all). I guess we won't get any good realistic historical movies anymore (if indeed we ever did) as they have to appease modern political stereotypes. Sad really.

Conlan Nagy it was ok, but it was too fantastical, the ending shootout wasn’t believable. Sure, you see it in westerns, unrealistic gun fights, but they notched it up. About the only western I liked with a fantasy element was high plains drifter. I like Open Range better than 4:10. Appaloosa too. Bone tomahawk was ok, just weird. Hard to put my finger on it. The best western show I’ve seen in years is Deadwood.

No offense to the storytellers, filmmakers, and performers of this film, but I would like to see a movie only about the Native People of this land BEFORE we got here.
Mel Gibson was one of the first (if not the first) to show us that in the Apocalypto Film and I want to see more.
No more stories that focus on the conflict between the immigrants (Europeans) and the Native People of the New World.
I want to see the People for what they truly were. No white faces in the film at all.
    MOST OF ALL:
I want it to be TRUE, based off of hardcore research and eyewitness accounts from the NATIVE PEOPLE behind the scenes.
Just them on their home, their ways and connection to nature and animals around them; ONLY THE PEOPLE AND THEIR WORLD; NOTHING ELSE.

There would be so many amazing movies to make about the time before Europeans landed in what is known now as the North American Continent. Gibson's film wasn't the most accurate, but I'm glad it has you wanting to know more. Here are a couple movie recommendations along those veins: Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, Before Tomorrow, Maïna, and Windwalker (Unfortunately, the lead character is a British Shakespearan actor). Here are also some set in current times. Smoke Signals, Pearl, about Pearl Carter Scott, a pilot, Songs My Brother Taught Me, Dance Me Outside, & The Doe Boy.

Hey, Ariel, thank you. My Aunt Ethel Montgomery saw a lot when she ran a trading post in Alaska. She started a scholarship for Tlingit women to try and do her part for reparations. She always made it clear how important learning the truth is. You can look up the Ethel Montgomery papers. I know it's not enough. I know archaeology shows indigenous peoples had trade routes all across this continent. Technology was available that allowed some desert city dwellers to have irrigation, running water and store food so that it was still good when it was found. I'm a writer and anthropologist. I appreciate learning. It's clear for all its faults, Apocalypto had Jaguar and his family return to the forest for a new beginning rather than meet the Europeans and Christianity. I think this is a fairly powerful message that people miss. There is an amazing poetry festival in Medellin, Columbia every year in summer. Poets from around the world attend, and indigenous poets share amazing poems generations passed down. It's on RUclips and whenever I want to see other ways for our world, I will watch the Festival. It's amazing to see people from everywhere and anywhere all sit down even in the rain to listen to poetry. This seems relevant considering the insecurity and fear and hurt and pain posted in other comments, who are posting alternative facts. Wishing you and yours the best.

Cali God Why are you making excuses to why the Indians lost against the Europeans? The Europeans were far more advanced militarily. But disease took its toll on the because they had no immunity to old world diseases. History is history.

Those complaining about politics that is not at all what this movie is about. Its honestly breath taking and stunning and beautiful in its quiet powerful moments that shows the devastation of war on all sides and yet how with forgiveness and faith it can be overcome. I recommend everyone go see it. It is so good. Brutal, shocking, touching and heart breaking. The acting is fantastic and Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike (however you write her name) blew me away.

In the context of the film, that language was simply part of day to day interaction in those times. That's how people spoke. That was the life they lived. It's realistic.
Rather than attempt to white wash historical accuracy, spare your pathetic sensibilities the torture by not bothering to see the movie. No one wants to hear you virtue signalling about historically accurate dialogue in a fictional movie.
