    I would recommend not trimming or cutting any trees or vegetation, if your yard waste will not get picked up before the storm. Just one big mess to be blown about your neighborhood, if it sits out at the curb during a storm.
    Good video, & thanks to Dad for the timely reminders.

    Your dad seems like a great guy and he raised a fine daughter. We live in Englewood and we have the legend of "Indian Mounds Burial Grounds" on Lemmon Bay that protect us from a direct hit and my wife and I went and paid homage in 2017 at the "Mounds" for sparing us any damage whatsoever from Irma. Many tracks have this storm as Cat 3 coming up in Tampa Bay or Charlotte Harbor like Charlie.
    Two sides of our corner property are surrounded by pepper trees and they block the damaging wind. I will be hoping the ancient tribe is again looking out for little ole Englewood once again.
    Thanks for this informative video. You are really good at this and have helped so many of us trying to grow food in this difficult growing environment.

    Ahhh … we’ve been lucky we haven’t had anything else come near this whole season. Having been through all the storms to hit Miami since Andrew, I finally can see the “don’t go crazy before a cat 3” mentality. I’m sure those out of hurricane alley don’t understand how we can be calm like that, but you and your dad are the perfect example of how to use practicality and not fear when doing storm prep. Kudos for this video! Prayers for your safety!

    Great video. Would love to see more videos after the storm about managing pests and diseases. There are so many options and things people say out there...would love some more help with learning who/ what is eating and destroying my plants and what works best to get rid of them. Just for powdery mildew on pumpkins there is a bazillion things to do. So many gardening channels are only focused on the Instagram worthy garden and not getting into the behind the scenes stuff that really matters.

    Growing up in Florida- the trees most at risk seem to be the very very old ones (the ones with huge branches) and the medium young "teenage" trees that have a big enpugh canopy to catch the wind but not enough roots to hold on with! The really young trees (like what most people's back yard fruit trees are) do just fine in most hurricanes (up to a 3 in my experience). My parents 4 year old guava got knocked sideways by a tropical storm a few years back- they righted it & staked it up afterwards and it is still growing fine and producing fruit today!

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Год назад +3

      Fantastic to hear about the guava! And agree about the trees. Also I see more big exotic trees fall more than our natives fall.

    North Fort Myers fairly new widow outside all day burning pallets and some things that are too tall. Some shutters up and rest are put in front of each window for installation sort of last minute. I smell like smoke and sweat and lanai that goes around three sides of my house has so many things to deal with. I did as much today as I could physically endure and after my chickens go into their coops around 7:30 I will be under the covers dwelling on what needs to be next. Tell dad we appreciated his advice along with The Wild Floridian!

    I have my first “crop” of bananas (ice cream bananas) that i think will be ready in November. They are still green. We may be getting gusts of 40-50….what should i do with it? Leave it alone or cut it down before the storm to let it ripen inside?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Год назад

      Leave it alone. If they aren't ready to ripen, leave and hope for the best. They should be able to withstand those levels of wind.

  • @heatherb4438
    @heatherb4438 Год назад

    Just be careful with the late pruning before storm. Stacking it by road for pickup when there isn't a pickup scheduled pre;-storm just piles up projectiles and makes a bigger post storm mess. I was really irritated by some neighbors who did that for Irma.
