@@robertbowman9108 Hmmm... only a few reasons off the top of my head. I'm tired after a day of skiing and I have a three hour drive home from VT to MA and struggle to stay awake. Even worse if I've had a beer or two. I'm drunk. The other guy is drunk. It's dark and I might not see that deer running in front of me in time. 8x-years old and not safe to drive, especially at night. Rented my car on Turo and I don't want to have to trust the renters' driving skills. Back country skier wants his vehicle to "meet him at the road", wherever that turns out to be. Or hiker. Or hunter. Or mountain biker. E-bike rider's battery runs out of juice or regular bike rider "bonks", and wants his Tesla to sag him back home (come get me!). Having an in-depth conversation with passenger(s) and don't want to have to pay attention to driving. Get a text that requires an immediate response, take over, Tessie, while I handle this. Annoying traffic, rather read or get some work done. Driving to some business event, need to do prep work. That's just a few, anybody else think of good cases?

There is a (cost) element that is very important and that I keep on pointing at: the interior design of a Tesla (i.e. Model 3) The interiors are dismissed as to simple to minimalistic. But they are designed with cleaning/maintaining procedures in mind. A Tesla interior (of a robotaxi) is far easier to clean than anything else on the market. People want CLEAN taxis. So try to clean any other car on the market today with all these buttons and air ducts etc etc... Also: every single a broken knob or air vent, or whatever, is an element that adds maintaining cost so: the minimalistic design approach is there for a reason...

Did it as well as I could have. Wow.

IMO the biggest improvement in FSD12 is that it moves over a little (within the lane) to the right when there is oncoming traffic in the next lane over to the left, wheras FSD11 drove in the center of the lane like a psychopath. If we just do some basic math and say 50% of new vehicles license Tesla FSD at $2400 per year for autonomy that's $2400x40M per year compounding revenue at around 85% GP. What is that figure after 10 years?? It's about $960B ARR (i.e. annual recurring revenue), or $816B gross profit per year.. So what the PV of that?? Yeah.. Nuts. Now let's say Tesla slashes the cost by 75% to just $600 per year, it's still over $200B per year in profit. Now tell me who wouldn't pay $600 per year for an autonomous driver that can potentially earn you thousands of dollars in profits every year? I have FSD. Is it worth (to me) what I paid for it? Not sure, but I can’t stress enough how amazing the experience is using it. It vastly reduces the stress (which I was often not conscious of) of driving. I don’t think other people can understand it until they try it. It is an absolutely incredible and thoroughly useful tool.

Of course, these Robotaxi "projections" do not take into account actually charging/downtime, cleaning, repairing, impound, insurance, competition, and many other factors. They also do not account for all the people that will simply refuse to be driven around in a driverless vehicle; i.e., it is assumed Robotaxi's completely and instantly take over the entire rideshare market. And that is Chicago. There are a few other cities like Chicago, but this is by far the exception and not the rule. If it does make sense in, say, Chicago, that market will be absolutely flooded with mom and pop Robotaxi fleets, and the competition for the few riders that are willing to be ferried in a driverless car will make it so no one makes money.

It will reach some equilibrium where the ROI of a car is not that high. Some percentage of people will do it to earn some money while most will become robo taxi passengers.

Given people's reactions, I think it must be much more heavily trained in certain areas. I've been trying FSD12.3 in Eastern Canada, and it's been difficult still: takes wrong turning lanes, doesn't see speed bumps or huge potholes, takes way too long at stop signs, even in assertive mode. It got completely flummoxed by an unexpected road closure, thought the construction guy waving traffic past the closed street was just a stationary pedestrian. Today, there was unexpected rain and even light snow, and it immediately declared it might be significantly impaired.
I'm bullish TSLA, paid a *lot* for FSD 3 years go to be able to keep tabs on the progress, but it's still faaar away from any Robotaxi ambitions. ValueAnalyst was really snarky with me 4 years ago when I said it would take a lot of time.

2:15 Imagine conjuring up this as the reason it drops you off at the entrance and not because Google Maps data tends to drop the point for particular places at the entrance.
Actually using FSD v12.3.3 Monday, had it completely flop because the map data was bad. Had it navigate to my hometown airport and the pin was right on the main road instead of in the parking lot/the entrance and instead of making a left into the parking lot, it put on the right blinker to go around a gentle bend in the road then started going 25 MPH in a 50 MPH. I let it continue straight while overriding the speed with the pedal, then eventually, after driving like a quarter mile, it slammed on the brakes with "you've reached your destination!" and tried to come to a full stop on a 50 MPH country road nowhere near the airport anymore. I then turned around and it managed to go into the airport parking lot, but behaved incredibly robot-like and uncomfortably, wiggling around slowly towards the entrance and then past it without stopping. Then I routed somewhere else and it never thought it left the parking lot, so I had to disengage because it was content to putter along at 25 MPH in a 50 MPH and wouldn't update the speed limit despite driving past 2 "50 MPH" speed limit signs. Seems one regression of FSD vs standard auto pilot is that it can no longer read speed limit signs and only goes by map data. In some fairness, I also drove on another country road heading home yesterday and it again set the speed to 25 MPH in a 55 MPH.

    Hardly realistic prices.
Robotaxi has to be 10x cheaper than owning a car to take off as a mass adoption thing - as per Tony Seba's projection where people stop buying cars & use CAS (car as service) instead.
That means NOT going for the highest amount you can charge a passenger - but instead going for the LOWEST price you can charge a passenger and still make a substantial but reasonable profit margin. The lower you can push the price - the more mass adoption.
Once everyone is using the service - then the price rises with inflation.
Or it just becomes another rich person's toy - chauffeured novelty car with no driver.
Also 6 million Tesla's on the road - most of which do NOT have the right FSD hardware if they're on earlier builds - so Elon's promise of your FSD car suddenly being worth more doesn't cut the mustard if you're on the wrong FDS hardware. Will he be forced to repay all those people who bought into the narrative but ended up with the 'wrong' hardware?
I know it's your job to 'pump' TSLA - but don't 'mislead' people.
Try steel man your own arguments sometimes.

    Hi Steven,
    Really impressive progression on fsd!
Recently, there was a conversation between Farzad and Chuck Cook about FSD (Full Self-Driving). In it, Chuck argues that no current Tesla vehicle will be able to drive fully autonomously because the cameras on the B-pillar are positioned too far back. This poses a problem when entering a T-intersection, where Teslas with FSD currently have to inch their way into the intersection. There have been instances where this can be quite dangerous, necessitating human intervention. In his opinion, additional cameras should be placed on the front bumper.Regarding this viewpoint, it's a valid concern, highlighting the limitations of current sensor placements in achieving full autonomy, especially in complex driving scenarios like T-intersections. The suggestion to add front bumper cameras could potentially improve visibility and decision-making for the vehicle, addressing the blind spots created by the current setup. This topic indeed might make for an interesting video!
Please like if you find this interesting

Hey SMR, you are correct there is NO incentive for Tesla to ever offer Autopilot to any owner operator of a Tesla vehicle for their own use! Tesla has never sold Autopilot as UN-supervised and I believe never will do. The mission is best supported by reserving this for the autonomous fleet ONLY! Furthermore the current S3XY fleet would require physical modification to elevate the steering hardware to that of CyberTruck to provide the necessary redundancy to allow unsupervised autonomy. Currently for S3XY the redundancy in the steering system IS the human driver LoL, these only have ONE control motor etc... Steer by wire in CyberTruck has introduced the final piece of the autonomy puzzle with two motor redundancy in the steering system, CyberTruck had to have this to allow the removal of the mechanical steering linkage (and hence the human back up)... S3XY do not have this redundancy instead relying on the mechanical linkage as the back up (not much use without a human driver at the wheel). It is clear that from aircraft automation that ALL controls must have redundancy the change from ONE motor to TWO motors in the steering controls take us from motor failure = immediate loss of steering (almost certain crash) to motor failure = must stop and have service to correct failed motor (second motor maintains steering control)!

I just spent a month on FSD 11.4.9 and now have 12.3.3, and it is a BIG jump ahead, particularly on local roads. I almost never used 11.4.9 on city streets because it required too many take-overs. I used it about 1/2 the time on the freeways where it requires far less interventions but has annoying habits (i.e. stays in the fast lane rather than yield to faster traffic, and would not work in the dark). v12 made city streets doable, but I'd still not pay money for it because it doesn't really make driving easier vs doing it myself. Overall, paying for even v12 FSD is really just paying to be a tester/observer of progress, and not a real driving benefit. Once it truly does get to L4/5 automation, I'll be signing up for the full version. This is understandably Gary Black's point. WS will adapt valuation once it is really helpful, but not before. If progress to L4/5 became more predictable, they'd probably have a higher valuation that lined up with that. I imagine right now it's a game of chicken with the analysts, how long can they play the volatility and manipulate the near term variations before they need to get back in big time to ride the realized innovation wave.

$300 clean fee, also higher user fees for future rides. 2nd time $500 clean up fee and then a permanent ban.

The implementation of FSD will be predicated on politics not technology, so don’t hold your breath

Customers don't get the demo drive. I picked up my 2024 refresh yesterday and was told, "I'll get an email in 7 days" as an update.

I agree parking is not that important. I would opine that navigation in unmapped streets matters. Huge parking areas and warehouse type districts that are pure alleys need to work if robotaxi is to succeed.

I got fsd yesterday. There was an accident in the middle of the road with police: Somehow the car identified that and change lines and avoided the obstacle. Amazing. I also tried summon and auto park: fantastic. We are just a few months away from robotaxi
