    Wow. Just wow. An hour and 45 minute great lesson... for free. Most teachers I've seen charge 200 for an hour, or more. You're so kind and generous! Also, have you considered doing a video on Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody? The piece is so good and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! You're the best.

      Hello Adam, I am so touched to read your wonderful comment! It is a pleasure and privilege to make these teaching videos. I adore this art form, and if I can help others to better learn and understand these masterpieces, I feel like I have done my work in “lighting the path." Your words have compounded my joy, and I thank you very much. Yes, the Spanish Rhapsody is near and dear to my heart, and I will strongly consider making a video for this fabulous piece in the future. :-) With very best wishes to you.

    This is fantastic. I will have to listen to this video a few more times, but I was shocked when you mentioned that we warm up by playing this piece. The idea never dawned on me. I always warm up with scales. I wonder what my fingers will think. I hope they don't revolt. Thanks a million, Sally. You are a fantastic teacher. When you play, it all looks so easy.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  3 года назад +2

      Hello Roger, thank you for your enthusiastic words! This video is best watched in smaller segments with the chart music in front of you. In the video, you will hear me say that these etudes are advanced level pieces and are top of the line in difficulty. They are part of the concert repertoire. I quote my grand teacher, Claudio Arrau (whose birthday is today, February 6th!) as having said that the Chopin Etudes take 5 years to really learn and get into the fingers. In answer to your surprise where I talk about warm ups, please go to 56:32 minutes where I say "People ask me what I do for warm ups. I answer by saying that practicing a piece like this gives me both development of my technique and a beautiful piece to perform, and that this is what Chopin gave us with these etudes! You will not be playing this etude as part of your warm ups unless you are at least an early advanced level player. If you can play the Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# minor, you can attempt this etude, practicing slowly at first as you learn your notes. Once your fingers learn the patterns, and in particular the "Cadenza" and “Pre-Cadenza" sections, practicing this piece will be a wonderful way to build up your technique, strength, and suppleness! I hope this clarifies my words in context to what I was referring to in this part of the lesson! As always, thank you for your thoughtful comments and words of support!

      @@SallyChristianMusic yes I really, truly love your rendition of l’Etude numero 10
      You absolutely encapsulate all the nostalgia, melancholy and we must remember his country was at war with Russia, and so must include also some deep worries for his family and homeland that he loved so much.
      I’m French and the sensibility of that piece touches me really deeply and more so now for all the people in Ukraine.
      When you play it we can feel the pain of an entire population, the cry of its children, the lamentations of the women
      The destruction of KYIV
      --
      Backstory: Chopin left his home country to advertise Poland's fight, against the Russians, through music abroad. After leaving Warsaw for Vienna, the fighting broke out and Chopin was notified that he was longer welcome back in Poland. Quote: “Oh, how hard it must be to die anywhere but in one's birthplace.”

    Amazing! You explained this so complex peace in such a beautifull and elegant way, with visual material that enables the brain to comprehend the whole with all the elements in order much faster. But the most important I think is the feeling and the spirit with which you present this music... it has so much love and deepness... it is the most precious thing a teacher can give... I only just learned it and still struggle with the middle section... it is probably a bid too much for my current skill, but I love it so much and that gives me motivation to practise it anyway... my playing will never be the same after this video... Just an update on these awesome charts for étude Op.10 no 3. I took your advice from your tutorial and used the addendum for the cadenza included in your chart pack for this piece as a warm-up using the fingering 5-2, 3-1, one hand at a time and what a powerful warm-up exercise. Even a beginner who buys this chart can use it as a great warm-up exercise as you suggested in this tutorial. That alone is worth the cost of these charts and I’m hooked on this piece. It’s a lot of work and fun. I’ll definitely incorporate this as an every day warm-up practice section. Two birds with one stone, you get to work on mastering this piece plus warm up as well. Hello Sally. Thank you so much for this.
    I first run those first few notes through my fingers at age 7 when my dad suggested I should start learning piano and suggested Chopin studies (he had no musical knowledge but being Polish he knew he like Chopin!)
    Anyway here I am at age 74 still struggling with these pieces. In my formative years we had no access to music, not even a record player. I might get the occasional snatch of something nice on the radio, but no one around to explain it. And now we have all that technology brings, and I have been able to make use of it.
    And now the latest discovery, your in depth analysis of Tristesse which has helped tremendously.
    Incidentally, a trio played Tristesse at my son's wedding in Slovakia. When I was playing it recently my daughter-in-law said it was nice and I said they played it at her wedding - she said she didn't realise!
    So thank you again. I will look forward to investigating your other videos!!

I hope you will be practicing the piece frequently now after so many decades since you first ran your fingers through it! This is such a beautiful piece, and I'm sure it was a very heartfelt experience for you to hear it played at your son's wedding. Thank you also for your kind words and interest in watching some of my other videos. It is my privilege and pleasure to make these labors of love! I grew up with a cheap keyboard, unfortunately not being able to have a piano or lessons. But there was a very simplified version of this piece that was built into the keyboard to learn and play. Despite only having the top melody and single note left hand, I loved it immediately, and learnt how to play it.
    Now, a good 10 years or so later, I have access to a piano, and this piece in full is very high on my list to learn.
    Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy is my first piece, and I’m currently about half way through. Not many pieces truly capture me, but these two pieces, Claire de Lune and Étude op.10 no.3, transport me to a different world whenever I hear them. An honourable mention is Liszt’s Liebestraum no.3.
    The important part is: I have now found an amazing lesson on this piece for free. And for that, I must thank you profusely, as I now have a means of learning this beautiful piece from my childhood.
    So, thank you. Really.
    If you’ll excuse me, I now need to practise!

      So i pick to start with the walzs in A minor.

      So before this walzs in A minor was mozarts twinkle twinkle little star theme + 2 lvl 1 rcm minuets then the 2 Bach minuets G so this was a bit of a step up in how hard it was.
      I was so lost so for a good weak i was going no where fast. so by luck or fate god i found your videos on it and with in 2 weaks I was playing it all to where i was happy to move onto new stuff.

      Dear Aditya, thank you so much for your wonderful words about this lesson. It is a pleasure and a privilege for me to make these tutorials and I appreciate your heartfelt words about the lesson and the music! 💕In order to better answer your question, I watched your recent video playing the Prelude No. 5 by Karol Szymnanowski. You play with much sensitivity, passion, and natural musical instincts. I think you already have enough technique to begin this Chopin Etude in E Major. As I said in the lesson, the Cadenza is the most difficult section and will take years to play well and accurately and to get “into your hands.” Please follow the steps that I outlined in this lesson and practice the hands together and also alone as you memorize this section. Seeing how much you love playing the piano, I recommend that you learn as much Chopin as you can. The waltzes and the preludes are a great place to begin! I wish you much success and joy with your playing and your life-long journey with the piano!

      @@SallyChristianMusic I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to reply to my comment. Thank you for your words about the Szymanowski prelude. That piece took me a long time to learn, as do most other pieces. Do you have any tips on streamlining the practicing process? Ex. What does a typical session of practice look like for you? I would also appreciate if you would take a listen to my interpretation on Fantasie-Impromptu (can be found on my channel). I worked very hard on that piece and would love to. hear your feedback for how I can improve. I understand you must be very busy but I would absolutely love it if you could.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  2 года назад +1

      @@adityalagu4114 Hello Aditya, you are very welcome. Regarding practice tips, after I have learned the notes of a piece I will usually play through the entire piece first. Then I will isolate the sections that are difficult for me and give them extra attention. I will often take the hands alone and practice at a slower tempo. There is no shortcut to learning well and memorizing accurately a piece of music. It always takes a long time. I did listen to your Fantasie-Impromptu. You shape the right hand beautifully and have a nice feeling for the piece. Please check the right hand dotted rhythms of the Largo section as you have missed some of these and are playing even eighth notes instead. As is true for many people, your left hand is more difficult for you to clearly articulate all of the notes. Additionally, there are a few places where you have learned wrong notes. I recommend practicing your left hand slowly and reading from the music again. Places to correct notes are: Measure 7, beat two. These notes move up to a higher pattern, beginning on an F# and not the D# of beat one. This supports the gorgeous ascending right hand passage that repeats many times throughout the piece. Measure 63 also has different notes on beat two. In measure 48 of the left hand, please play the A natural on beat two and in the 3 other measures where this same pattern repeats. Your careful attention to accurate reading will be a very important habit for you to develop. Best wishes with your work and much joy to you with your playing!

    Love this. Thank you. I would like to start studying the difficult "middle" section, playing the "beginning" for quite a while now. Chopin made specific instruction to have his Fantasie Impromptu destroyed (what a lost that would have been if that wish was exectuted), because he felt it was too much like the Moonlight Sonata. Hello Sally, really appreciate the in-depth look at this awesome piece of music. I am what you would describe as an amateur pianist despite receiving the proper education all through my schooling years. I would like to ask for more advice on perfecting the accuracy of the cadenza section of this Etude. I have all the notes of that section practically memorised in my head but am struggling in perfecting my accuracy at the required tempo. For me, I feel like I lose focus of the length of my fingerings as I swap from 1-3 to 2-5, what can I do to remedy this?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  2 года назад +1

      Hello TheJudge, thank you for your wonderful comment and excellent question. You have identified one of the biggest technical challenges of this section. I had the same difficulties, which is why I spent so much time in the lesson with this "Cadenza." It took me months and months of hands alone practice as well as hands together at a slow tempo to train my fingers how to accurately set up these jumps. I experimented with the angle of the fingers being on the diagonal, pushing into the jumps with the wrists, and pulling down with the arms. It will take months of slow and careful repetitions, but ultimately you will “learn your hand” and how it fits with these big stretches. You will be able to do this if you are patient and do not give up! I wish you all the best as you surmount this challenge and play this piece with ease!

    I love this playing! I see in the comments you take requests, so I have one; a kinda uncommon piece if you’d be interested in that type of thing. It’s called “Salut, cendre du pauvre” by Charles Valentin Alkan, and I think you’d enjoy it.

      If you want something a little less long, because I see in your videos pieces that are around five minutes, I have a few possible Alkan suggestions. Maybe you’ll decide to do one of them if Salut Cendre du Pauvre isn’t a piece you want to play.
      1. Saltarelle op. 23
      2. Any of the 25 preludes, op 31
      3. Etude Op. 39 no. 5

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  3 года назад

      @@mohanshawcellist Ah yes, ... thank you, now I understand you are asking about the "Cadenza" section of the piece (as I have called it.) Playing legato slurs in this section of minor 6ths is very important, and your question is an excellent one. I made a special Addendum about how to practice this Cadenza and which fingerings to use to achieve the legato slurs. Beginning at 1:03:45 in the lesson, I go over these fingerings in detail. You are correct that both hands use the index fingers simultaneously with the 5th fingers to play the first minor 6th legato and connected to the next minor 6th, which is played with fingers 3 and 1 in both hands. It is on the sets of fingers 2 and 5 where we connect the slurs, and the sets of fingers 3 and 1 where we go off on the slurs. Please watch this part of the lesson where I explain and demonstrate this fingering pattern that repeats 32 times for the entire Cadenza! I hope this part of the lesson and the Addendum I made and use in the lesson will be helpful for you!

    Hi Sally, I'm thinking F.Chopin wrote this when he was with Aurora Dudevant a woman
    who took on the name of George Sands as she was a novelist and knew she could not
    get anywhere as a woman, a glass ceiling even back then. I read their relationship was
    quite stormy at times, maybe it is showing up here? lots of passion.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  2 года назад

      Hello Raymond, yes, the relationship between Chopin and George Sand was one of the most fascinating and extraordinary in musical history. It also ended tragically, especially for Chopin. We would know so much more if she, after ending the relationship, had not destroyed all the personal letters in her possession from the eight years they were together.

      between Chopin's woman and her dughter/s. Apparently, Chopin took the
      side of the daughter/s . . . well I guess he really went by his true feelings,
      not that it worked out for him. makes me wonder if this opus 10#3 was
      written after the break-up. He was rather frail in health and between that
      and his loss of a woman he loved to some extent, seems she saw him one
      last time, held his hand, then he was gone. . .but his music still lives on. . .

    Do you think that chopin etudes are the fundamentals of piano technique?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  3 года назад +1

      Hello Mohan, thank you for your excellent and thought provoking question. I think the Chopin Etudes address many of the technical difficulties we may face as pianists, as do the etudes of Liszt and Rachmaninoff. It has been said that if one can play the Chopin Etudes, one can play anything! Building the fundamentals usually starts with learning scales, chords, inversions, arpeggios, etc. and progresses in difficulty with combinations and extensions of these. There is no question that practicing scales is one of the fundamentals. An expanded version of playing scales is to play parallel scales with each hand playing thirds or sixths. I begin my practice session with these. They are written by Plaidy, and are in a volume called Plaidy Technical Studies. Anything with these "double-stops" is great preparation for developing strength and suppleness. Chopin wrote three etudes using different combinations of thirds and sixths with his Opus 10, No. 7, & Opus 25, Nos. 6 & 8. His Opus 10, No. 4 is a good example of using some of the fundamentals in the most extreme form of difficulty.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  3 года назад +1

      Dear Zuheyr, yes, I understand your frustration having waiting so long for the WTC I C Major Fugue lesson. This fugue is not a beginning level piece. It is more on the level of the Bach 3-Part Inventions / Sinfonias. I am working full time on these videos and am going as fast as I can. When I first launched my channel in 2012, I started with the earlier level repertoire. Since then, I’ve had to carefully decide just which projects to do next. Some of these pieces have been on my personal wish list for decades, and these have naturally come first. I have received hundreds of requests for various teaching videos, and I would really like to do them all at some point. My responses are always that “I have added them in my queue of projects I would like to do in the future.” It is not a promise for immediate turn around production. The reality is that each video takes months and sometimes years to prepare. The videos have evolved over the years as well, and have become extremely labor intensive. They involve making 3 separate parts: the engraving of the chart music with the multiple pdf supplies, the teaching video, and the memorized performance video. Many of these pieces are new for me, and I have had to learn them and memorize them as well. This often takes a year or two. I have already made engravings of the complete Bach 2-Part Inventions, and this year I will be working to record the lessons and the memorized performance videos for a few more of these. Inventions 11 & 15 were requested in 2013, and I very much hope to finish these this year! I do have plans to go back to some of the beginning repertoire, but my authentic calling in the last several years has been geared towards the intermediate to advanced level literature that is part of the concert repertoire. This is a very long answer to your request. I hope it will reassure you and others who are also waiting for their requests that I have not forgotten your requests or you! To conclude, I like the saying: "All things in right time." Best wishes to you.
