I have never heard this etude played so beautifully and so calmly from start to beginning. Superb playing, thoughtful interpretation. I am rather appalled at the comment herein about Mr. Shishkins facial expressions, I can only guess that those persons making such comments either do not play piano or, do not play well as they focus on the wrong things...Mr. Shishkins playing ie exquisite.

I know that the other competitors avoid this PIECE because of how "mainstream" it is BUT this is one of Chopin's greatest masterpieces and Dmitry is able to capture the emotion of it. Melancholic, dramatic but also has a flair to it.

The voicing, crescendo and legatto of the left hand at 2:14 is the highlight of this interpretation for me. We tend to do it in groups of two because of the fingering in the right hand (although is written in groups of four), but he just gives us a full descending chromatism in left hand, totally independent from right hand. What a great moment!

it seems like competitors tend to choose pieces that show off their technical skills more than musicality, so just what is the judging really based on? i know this piece is easier than some of the most frequently played etudes like 10-1, 10-2, 10-8, or winterwind etc, but do competitors get a lower score if they play some of the easier pieces? it's a shame most competitors avoid such pieces like the 10-3 because it may look "too easy" compared to other hard etudes

This étude differs from most of Chopin's in its tempo, its poetic character and the lingering yet powerful recitation of its lento melody. Chopin originally gave his Op. 10 No. 3 Etude the tempo Vivace, later adding ma non troppo. In Schumann's 1836 fur Musik article on piano études the study is classified under the category "melody and accompaniment in one hand simultaneously. Based on these said points, Shiskin's interpretation of this piece ranks up there with famed virtuosos such as French pianist Cyprien Katsaris.

Well, a pianist should play with his hands, not with his face. I do not like his mimics either, it is an unnecessary allure - I agree with you. @knochildiko 4 года назад +1

I do not know how to call you by name (I am quite sure Serponge is not your first name), so I just say hello. Well, I was taught like that. My piano teacher never ever allows me any mannerism. And she is right. There is a world wide known Hungarian pianist. He was very good in his childhood already. As a child, he made circles with his upper body while he was playing. He made his spectators sick with this constant weaving. As an adult he dropped this bad habit. Mannerisms won't make anybody a better pianist. Less is much. An actress said once: "If I have to cry in a scene, I may not allow myself to be overwhelmed by my emotions too much. I have to make the spectators believe I am devasteted, that I am really sad but I have lines to say: I may cry as much as even the spectators of the last row understand what I am telling." However, if you like the way Dmitry Shishkin plays the piano, feel free to enjoy it!

Is he playing the voices slightly out of sync at the beginning? Whatever it is it sounds beautiful and very unique.

Well-played... except the echo effect...where the chords are delayed (not together)...it's a new fad I guess, but in this case, it's SO OVERDONE that it's distracting. Ruins it for me.

The way he uses asynchronous hands really annoys me I'm afraid. He frequently plays notes in his left hand slightly earlier than his right hand when they are written to be played at the same time. I think that spoils it.

I get what you mean, but I like it since I often do that myself in order to play emotional and slow pieces more espressivo.

That piano is terrible, has no contrast, is just...dry. The tone is linear and undefined. His playing and interpretation are beautiful.

Oh yes, the most picked piano of the competition since it has been introduced on the market in 2010 among Steinways, Faziolis and Kawais and choosen by 5 of the 6 finalists of the 2015 edition, as well as the favorite piano of legendary names such as Martha Argerich and Maria João Pires. But you're probably right, I mean you must be a better musician than all of them.
