I'm taking a beginner mechanic course. I read about this about five times and still didn't understand. Watched this video once and it all makes sense now! Thank you thank you thank you so much! Adding this to my school work playlist
Learning things formally w/ terminology pertaining to the topic results in easy confusion since it's the first exposures for the brain. The brain's neurons need to rewire themselves to things that you already know, associative thinking. By teaching with simple words and analogies, more people will be able to understand what you are teaching more quickly and correctly with a deeper *base understanding of the knowledge.
Only old documentaries can explain it so nicely. Now a days they do presentations on computers but still do not match these old ones. Btw the voice in these old days was so typical as if only one and same person was there doing voice-over for all these presentations :)
Are you sure? 60s engine are easy. Who know what is injectors times electronic ignition, lambda, air flow, cams time changing, a knocking combustion (when today engines work on edge knocking)
I know this technology has been around a long time but I’m still more amazed by an engine’s operation than most new things today. We think of the old days as more primitive but it feels more advanced than today, honestly.
I couldn't imagine how the inventor came out this kind of idea when it comes to naming parts of this unique machine and how clearly explain. !? Awesome & Amazing
It was probably made at least 60 years ago and is astonishingly better than most modern day video explanations. This is to show that excellent education is timeless.
Perfect explanation with a wonderful conceptual setup. Makes everything clear and graspable. Always wondered how all these things worked together, now I know!
Mr.GearS Stay with it Mister Gear, I've been turning wrenches over 50 years of my life, to this day,-30 years ago,, We had the best mechanics anywhere in the world, as of today We have the greatest part swappers,, Second of none. and as of course,to the customer's expense. There are still some good mechanics out there, but you're getting fewer and fewer as years go by. To those still out there I tip my hat with all do respect.
Dale Slover As a Career Auto Mechanic I can myself confirm that the trade is turning into just swapping parts out rather than actually diagnosing and fixing the original part. When I first started 2 years ago (was 22 when I started, am now 24), the decline in well seasoned mechanics definitely declined more rapidly over my short tenure, that being said my Mentor is one of the best mechanics I know, and I was very very lucky that he took me on as his pupil/protege. If more people had a highly skilled mentor like I had we would have way more people in this field for the love more than the money.
technocraft 89 adulthood is where appreciation lacks and it’s quite childish of you ( well , you are 12 ) to think that if you understand something its a proud thing. Did not mean to offend you tho
I was trying to explain how pistons and the crankshaft work to a friend, but felt I wasnt relaying the information effectively. Found this video, and it explains it suuuper well. Very well done
Old but still works! I have a 2004 Pontiac grand am with a V6. The engine is a push rod just like this one only real difference is its port injected instead of a carburetor, but the basic principles still work!
I'm trying to get a better understanding of cars and how they work, I've tried so many other videos but this was one was easy to understand and remember.
Geniuses at all levels- designers to teachers & documentary producers. To the point documentary with full focus on explaining things - efficiently that is!
I remember understanding all this completely in 5th grade, without having seen this type of material, but by just reading everything about cars I could get my hands on, and all of my male classmates did as well. We knew about displacement, CR, 4-bbl carbs, injection, supercharging, big block v small block, the 'hemi', Diesels, etc. Girls would hear us talk and ask, "whats a 350 or a 427?" We'd reply, "that's the displacement", and they'd just look puzzled. By the time I was 15, I understood ignition timing, camshaft profile and other details with no classroom instruction whatever and I didn't even own a car. Automotive tech for boys back in the 60s & 70s was like video games today.
Sure you can explain nowdays cars as simple as this. But today people want to sound smarter and use syntax that will make you pause and research its meaning on google - and yet not understand it. Still, they will make an 1 hour documentary and it will take you an engineering (pre)knowledge to understand a bit. Kudos to the presenter, simple straight, direct manner, understandable for everyone. Thank you.
There's a joke about a mechanic who confronts a heart surgeon when repairing his car, "why do you make so much more money than me?". The doctor replies "when I work the engine is running".
I just realized that the car was the highpoint of engineering, all kinds of innovations coming into the thing that would eventually replace the good ‘ol horse that we’ve all relied on for a few thousand years.
Excellent detailed and simplified explanation of how a combustible engine works... And why we easily could've made electric powered engines and automobiles from the very beginning
Just FYI if you're watching this in 2021, practically every car made past 1990 uses a EFI (electronic fuel injector) instead of a carburetor. The EFI is connected to a car's drive train PCM computer and is able to create the fuel-air mixture that gets sent through the intake valve. EFI's are far more efficient and save on excess gasoline being directed to the engine.
Looks like my first car, a Chevy Impala with a 283 cu. in. V8. I have memories of changing the points, rotor, spark plugs, etc and how I tought myself how the internal combustion works.
Crystal Clear. How is it, that in today's age of technology there is not a video to a similar effect? I feel like there could be a 1 hour clip describing in minute detail how pressing on the gas pedal produces movement on the tires. I mean the full monty, how every little gadget works. This is a great start!
It’s so awe inspiring to know us humans were able to make something that is so unique and amazing that it makes you sit back and think how people thought to make this stuff lol
Even though i am in a tec school teaching this stuff but it makes it nice n simple for a potential gear head such as myself. However modern cars do not have carbrators and distributors. But my dream car does. And now i know why its important to have a carbrator on old cars that have them.
I'm taking a beginner mechanic course. I read about this about five times and still didn't understand. Watched this video once and it all makes sense now! Thank you thank you thank you so much! Adding this to my school work playlist
I couldn’t understand much at first either, kept watching 1 or 2 a day and eventually it all makes sense, US auto industries is a really good channel
... I was feeling so stupid thinking I'm never gonna learn the way all the other guys are. But this video is so clear.
where could I get the complete version of this video?

When learning difficult things, find the easy understandable bits, and slowly put together the puzzle until you can see the whole picture.
SIMPLEST WAY OF EXPLAINING HOW THE ENGINE WORKS. GOOD JOB!
Rudolf de Lang not really I just found out my boyfriend is chasing my dog
@@eddiew2325 is he still chasing the dog?

Lol so true
Yeah same I love the old documentaries
I agree!
I agree that
Exactly!
NO wonder people were smarter back then....they explain everything so simple to understand.
Are you sure? 60s engine are easy. Who know what is injectors times electronic ignition, lambda, air flow, cams time changing, a knocking combustion (when today engines work on edge knocking)
or maybe it's because engines were just similar back then. Thanks to the internet, we can be more informed than ever before
M
They also needed to understand it without RUclips as a option to learn which made them have to experiment more hands on
Yesssss! Screw common core!
I know this technology has been around a long time but I’m still more amazed by an engine’s operation than most new things today. We think of the old days as more primitive but it feels more advanced than today, honestly.
Yeah everything today is shifting to be more minimal and digital. I love more mechanical stuff, especially old computers
Lies again? NRIC Card USD SGD
Everything must be perfectly synced to work. I have new appreciation for the engineering of engines
That's the exact thing that makes me wonder... The engineer's perfection
It reminds me of ww2 planes and how the propellers and machine guns are synchronized
As beautiful as it is, re-syncing it is a nightmare! Thank god for computer controlled engines!
@@DanielMothers until you have a hangfire...
Nothing is perfect
Arguably the single best video I've seen on all of the internet. I was having an epiphany every 4 seconds I watched this.
Lol right!
I feel smart as shit now.. got into rocket science.. which.. is easier than combustion engines in my opinion.. lol youtube is the matrix 😎
Yes. Good video. Why epiphany there then?
I like the no nonsense way this is presented. They didn't try to introduce needless comedy and jokes in this.
Or 10 stupid ads

And if you rev it high enough, it becomes an external combustion engine.
"Dad! Why is there a piston in my water tank?"
Boom!
Hehe
lol
literally laughed out loud
I don't recall ever seeing a video more easy to understand than this one. Thanks so much for posting
Perfect explanation with a wonderful conceptual setup. Makes everything clear and graspable. Always wondered how all these things worked together, now I know!
I am 12 years old .......and i love technologies.....and i understood the explanation perfectly.👍👍👍

This is how you explain very complicated things. Thank you.
Exactly
This 5 minute video made more sense to me than the past 2 90-minute classes in auto motives
Thank you from a 77 year old lady who is trying to understand how things work.
never stop learning
More like how things used to work. Half the things explained in this video no longer exist on a modern vehicle
That's super cool :)
Next up, how dinosaurs procreate.

Watched many Videos about engine, but this documentary is the finest and simplest explanation
Videos like these explain more than two weeks worth of Science lessons on the same topic
These old documentaries are amazing. I already thoroughly understand engines. But the simplicity and narration of these films can't be matched.
It’s always satisfying coming back to refresh this basic knowledge. Pretty much my favorite engineering achievement.
We need more people like this guy, he explains this so well, breaking it down in a simple yet effective manner. Excellent work.
Best video i have seen on how an engine works!!! AWESOME!!! Wish they would go back to the old ways of teaching!!!
You American makes beautiful technology videos, very vivid and understandable, even back then.......Thank you for sharing !!
This was by far the most comprehensive documentary I have seen on this topic yet!
yes I agree
Why is this video so much more detailed yet simpler than most videos of today?
Because AI wasn’t born yet .
This is so simple to understand. It clearly depicted the functions of each and every component of the IC engine.
this is just the best video to explain how engines work, simple and easy to understand
Wow i had one of those model V8 engines as a kid ....was a ton of fun to build and watch it run !
I still have mine. It still works too.

I’ve been hunting all over RUclips for an engine video from this era! Thank God you have one and put it up for reference!
So well explained. Plain and simple. No wonder students have to take help of RUclips to learn because presentations just don't explain stuff so well.
Geniuses at all levels- designers to teachers & documentary producers. To the point documentary with full focus on explaining things - efficiently that is!
The best explaining ever! Only place to understand this stuff. And it's free! Subscribed! You are underatted. You should have more subs and views.

It's 2021 and after this video life has begun making sense
We need this man's voice in every single documentary in this planet
This was best video to understand how engine Works. Thank you.
I learned every bit of this in junior high. We tore apart a lawnmower engine and rebuilt it piece by piece. School was different then
wow this guys explanation is on point
His voice sounds like the voiceover for 80’s horror movie trailers 😂
Great presentation 👍🏼👍🏼
It sounds like your typical narrator from videos in the 50’s
That animation is beyond amazing
Oh Man! This video is liquid gold :)
Finally, for years, after seeing modern one and found this video I finally understood how this works
Back when teachers were really teaching. Concise, detailed, and easy to uderstand.
It's amazing how many parts come together to make the car work
Why don't they show this documentary in school? It's a million times better than teachers braying at the top of their voice.
The older the videos are the more easier it is to understand what’s going on

It’s crazy that this technology and what we’re driving around basically hasn’t changed for over 100 years.
