This car doesn't know what it's trying to be - and that's just fine! Citroen C5 X 2023 review

- The 2023 Citroen C5 X is a car that doesn't know what it's trying to be. Or does it?
The brand itself says it blends SUV, wagon and sedan styling cues, and it certainly stands out from the crowd when it comes to its looks.
But it really is the definition of a 'crossover' - it's not all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD / 4x4), instead it's a front-wheel drive with a petrol engine. It has slightly more ground clearance than a standard wagon, but it doesn't sit nearly as a high up as most SUVs.
It has a bunch of interesting technology and features, and of course, being a Citroen, it's super comfortable.
Matt Campbell test drove the new Citroen C5X crossover to find out what it's like.

Our company car is a C5 Tourer (estate) 2015 with hydraulic active suspension. Such a good looking car, it does long distances like no other. It has been 100% reliable and everyone who drives it marvels it. And it's super economical. Viva la Citroen!
These European brands are way better compared to other regions with respect to tech and design. This Citroen looks awesome, but the only hindrance might be the boot utilisation due to the dropping roofline. The design feels fresh and different.
This car is so.underrated and actualy it is amazing, not try to be sporty in any way but real long cruser for enoy drive or be driven,we need more this kinda cars and not usseles "sportines" ,majority of people.dont need S from.sport but need.a loot and loot of comfort
It appears you used stock footage for the boot as it is demonstrated with ski hatch pass through for the rear armrest. Does the AUS spec model come with split rear fold down seat backs?
You're good, Rob. Yes, we had to use an image from the European model to showcase the boot space, as no imagery was available (and I got photos that weren't passable for the video). Our cars in Australia don't get the ski port.
Thanks

So much nicer than any Asian car. French cars are really quite something, hard not to love once you try driving one. Good niche fit below the ostentatious german brands yet a cut above the asian brands.
Sensational car. A true gem, a masterpiece.
Have you ordered one?
Thanks
Matt
What is it with large cars and small engines. Yup they give them plenty gears to ensure sparkly low speed pickup…..but once underway and loaded, face it they struggle on urban hauls. This ain’t aimed at citroen…it’s aimed at many today. Load this thing with family and gear, possibly a trailor hauling the bbq and kids gear for the day away and try and become anyone other than a mobile chicane for other road users
I agree, they give you all the tech, yet all we want is displacement.
Yikes ..that sounds like National Lampoons Vacation with Chevy Chase.
Citroen and Peugeot have basically capped their petrol engine sizes at 1.6L, and emissions standards dictate that. So, while a throbbing 3.0L six would be a SUPERB fit for this, it'll never happen.
Matt
They’re also turbo unlike Japanese/Korean cars. Reason why it takes 95 RON…
How does this compare to the Volvo V60 CC? Strange you mentioned Subaru Outback or the Audi All road. I would have thought the Volvo CC is in fact a similar product - raised wagon offering the practicality but not boxy like an SUV.
Or even the Skoda Superb. The Citroen is quite premium
Attractive, but do the two black areas below the front lights have a function?..or are they just meant to be decorative ..because visually I feel the front droops a little too much.
In some ways its a pity that it doesn't have Air or Hydropneumatic suspension.
No function, as far as I'm aware.
Yep, but the suspension bump cushions (that's my definition of them) are superb.
Cheers

Time to replace my 2011 C5
with this?
Nice choice
I love my old C5, it redefines comfort. Maybe this would be a good replacement except for the dealer network ( charging $560 for a service! ) that lives in a dreamland, ensuring Peugeot/Citroen will always be marginal in this country even though in many ways they make great cars for this country.
you can always find a independent mechanic, they will do a better job for a much more reasonable price
@@bigchief2331 Does it void manufacturer warranty if you opt for an independent mechanic?
@@r1ckyyyyyyy absolutely not
I’d never recommend an independent mechanic. This is what causes problems.
European car services are generally higher because more parts are replaced-not just an oil change.
It will void warranty if non genuine parts are used. A dealer does not have ANY accuse if the vehicle has always been at the dealer.
What colour is this?
Amazonite Grey
Not a "Citron" but a "Citroen"
E10 is more or less standard in e.g. Germany; one has to pay a premium for E5
Yeah, E10 here in Australia is typically reserved for the cheap and nasty fuel. Premium unleaded is a must - it has to run on 95RON.
It is really hard to believe that this car only needs 41,000 AUD(190,000 RMB) to buy in China for the top variant.
China is a lot closer to France than Australia is...
@@carsguide I think the main reason for this situation is that C5 X is produced in China's domestic factory. The labour cost is lower than in France. And also reduce the cost of delivery.
It's 2023 and they still call it map pocket, who owns street directories or maps nowadays
Made in China but then so are the Volvos I might cross shop this against. Then again the BMW's Ive shopped recently are made in South Africa (3 series) and Mexico (4 series). The badge means nothing when it comes to country of origin.
Don't bother. Mechanics in this country have no clue how to fix Citroens . I speak from experience.
lol.. they cant be much chop then.. because not much unique about them and hasnt been for many decades.. cars all share so many parts now
Agree. Also, this is not a Citroen.
That’s why you get them serviced at Peugeot or Citroën…
Review from a cave?
From a conference room on a ridiculously wet day... I know, it wasn't ideal, but it was our only chance to get it done!
Thanks
