I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I was so happy to go there and so overwhelmed. I could have done better on the video, but I was a tourist. LOL! Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for watching my videos. I do love history and was so glad to be able to go to Walnut Grove. I grew up watching the TV show and reading the books.
This is wonderful to see! I went to this museum back in 1994, when my husband(who is a born and raised Minnesotan) and I moved to Buffalo, Minnesota. I literally grew up with Little House On The Prairie and was just 4 years old when I watched the pilot to that wonderful program.:-) I also received the set of books one Christmas and read them over and again. My father attended a one room schoolhouse and like you, I'm a cat lover as well. :-)
I grew up with Little House too. I still own and read the books. Have you seen the video where we brought home our new kitten? She's so cute and cuddly. Thanks for watching. I do have more videos on our trip to MN. You can watch them all from the playlist.
I love your videos.. I live not far from either Walnut Grove, MN and DeSmet SD.. here is a run down on her timelines of each settlement.. First Laura was born in Pepin, Wisconsin, when she was two years old and after Pa and Ma discussed for several weeks or month perhaps.. they decided to move west.. as Pa thought the Big Woods was being over crowded with Settlers coming into the area and driving wild game away, so then went to Kansas to "Indian Country" this was when Laura was 2 years old and Mary 4 years old.. while there sister Carrie was born.. by the time Laura was about 4 years old the Ingalls had to leave the homestead due to what the Gov't thought they settled there illegal without proper contracting land through the Homestead office .. which at the time it was not open when they first settled.. so they moved back to Pepin Wisconsin for I think a 1 to 2 years.. then they tried moving west again.. this time to Minnesota to Walnut Grove.. there they lived for about 1 year and half.. their crops were destroyed by grasshoppers so the Ingalls moved to Burr Oak, IA as Pa was offered a job at a hotel during the winter.. they were there for I think almost a year.. but the town proved to be wild for Pa liking for daughter's to live in but before living Pa built a house for Hotel owners and lived in it till they left in the middle of the night as Pa thought it was best to leave in the middle of the night. They moved back to Walnut Grove again this time they lived in the town of Walnut Grove as Pa word at various jobs from butchering to carpentry and occasional farmhand until they were visited by Pa sister who was on her way to DeSmet SD but then it was till a territory.. so Pa went ahead as Mary was still recoverying from the illness that rendered her blind so Pa sold the house with agreement that Ma and girls can stay till Mary was well enough to travel again.. which was about a month or two .. so Ma and the girls Laura, Mary, and Carrie all took the train from Walnut Grove to Tracy MN from there Pa met them at the train and the next day they started for DeSmet. which was about a day's travel.. they lived in a camp for the family of railroad construction workers till fall and as Pa and Ma were debating on whether or not to leave and go back East for the winter or stay and try to make through the winter as Pa did not want to lose sight of his land he found for their homestead.. but by coincidence the Surveyors were going to leave one to stay in the Surveyors house to protect and when they learned of Pa's plan they made a deal that to let the Ingalls live there instead so both Surveyors can travel back east to their families so the Ingalls lived in the Surveyors house that winter.. when spring came the surveyors returns and moved the railroad camp further west towards Mansfield and Huron. Pa was able to legally apply for a homestead rights on his land and they settled there 6 months out of the year and while planting crops and harvesting.. Pa continued to work in town at times and the town of DeSmet was settled including Pa owning two lots he built two stores sold one .. and lived in the other during the winter 1880/81 and 1881/82. Winter of 1880/81 was a harsh brutal winter and trains were stopped due to the heavy snow.. people barely survived that winter then Laura continued school and taught school in the area till she met and married Almanzo Wilder in 1885 after courting for 2 years from there she and Almanzo tried to get their homestead going but drought forced them to give up farming and Almanzo and Laura moved to town after they both suffered from diphtheria that left Almanzo considerably weaker eventually after 7 years they moved south to Mansfield, Mo where they found Rocky Ridge.
Danielle, you are a lover of this wonderful lady, aren't you!? I have read all her books many times but my memory is not as good as what it used to be :/ I have read a great book about Laura written by another author, that I love. Laura is one of those people that I will follow until I am gone. I love books about her and by her. I want to go to DeSmet some day, as well as other places she lived. She lived in Florida with Almanzo and Ruth for a time too, after leaving DeSmet.
yeah I want to visit all the places she lived .. I just recently learned she did live briefly in Florida.. but I dont think it was for a few months perhaps at least a year.. so this next summer I am going to try to make it to Walnut Grove and back to DeSmet as I been there once a long time ago as child I too will follow Laura Ingalls Wilder till the day I pass tooo.. and thank you for your kind words and hope someday we would meet and visit more about Laura Ingalls Wilder
@@CookingwithCatLover0330 There's a short biography that gives a lot of this information of you want to read it. Quick read and enjoyable. Laura Ingalls Wilder Storyteller of the Prairie by Ginger Wadsworth . It has some nice pictures too.
Thanks, Lisa! This was an amazing trip. I have passed this exit so many times but was never allowed to go. I had so much fun here! I felt like a little girl in a candy store! Thanks for watching!
Tessie! I'm glad you like it. I just love Laura Ingalls Wilder. I hope some day to see her home in Mansfield, MO and DeSmet, ND. Thank you for watching. I love your videos too!
The book " These happy golden years " concludes with Laura's marriage. "The first four years" details her early years married to Almonzo. Laura taught 3 terms of school BEFORE she married. Afterwards she stayed at home and raised a daughter named Rose. "On the way home" is also about her married years.
It upsets me that now they want to erase Laura Ingalls Wilder from our history. Instead of learning from history certain people want to act like it never happened.
It upsets me too. Laura Ingalls Wilder was an amazing author and historian, in my eyes. We learned so much from her. She was not a racist or hater of any people. She was living in an era. They are trying to take away what is American and that upsets me. Yes, we need to learn from history lest we repeat it. Thanks for your input, Deana.
We know now that they were racist. Ma did not like Indians and Pa participated in a minstrel. I know that it was considered “normal” and that’s how things were back then but we know better now. I’m glad things have changed and we learned to accept others who are different from us
Um in the books esp on the banks of plum creek the Nelsons little girl Anna was the one who wanted Laura's doll charlotte to play with and Laura was forced by ma to do that they later found the doll soaked in plum creek. Anna nelson did not really bully Laura it was Nellie Owens but as Laura put 3 girls together that were mean to her in childhood in her books and just gave it the nellie Olson name. The tv series ran off of that. The Nelsons are not really mentioned in the tv series. ML TOOK more liberties with the story telling. But i like seeing the replica of the wonderful house.
His name was really pronounced “Al-MAN-Zo. The first time he was mentioned on the show the person mispronounced his name to “Al-MON-Zo m, so they kept it like that.
Maybe but well never really know the whole truth cause if she had just put it out there that it was one particular girl who bullied her it could be lawsuit these days lol. Gawd Allison arngrim talked about in her real life people hit her with orange soda thinking she was like Nellie Olsen in real life but it was not the case. There was even a Stella Gilbert that tormented Laura funny coincidence since Melissa Gilbert played her wonder if there is a distint relation link? Yeh the show diveaded of the books a bit but there are some intriguing parrallels and links in the casting of it.like it was fate of destiny i guess on how ML produced his show.
I don't have my facts "wrong" about Laura. I didn't remember everything and might have been wrong about one thing or another, however, I was pretty much right on a bunch. I forget things, like many people do. Such as, yes, Mary went to school. How did I forget that! Please correct me on anything I said wrong. I'm not perfect and my memory isn't the greatest. Thanks for watching.
Yes, 2 or 3 girls were wrapped up in Nellie. One was Nellie but there was at least one other girl who Laura and Mary didn't like. You are a true lover of this author. So glad you found my videos.
@@CookingwithCatLover0330 One of the girls was called Geneviève Masters. Part of the Masters family spent the "Hard Winter" with the Ingalls Family, because tey could not find any other shelter and the young wife was pregnant.
I always wanted to see Walnut Grove museum.Thanks.

I love that old house smell. These videos are awesome. I've been reading Laura's books since about the age of five or so. Thank you !

Yes that was her name real last name
are there cameras at the buildings...or is there trust at the visitors not to take a souvenier...maybe a bookpage ffrom a school book or something...
I don't know anything about the cameras. I think the people who go there are there to see and respect history. But good point.
the school is very very small..my godness
Yes, back in the early years of America, schools were small. Laura taught in a small school and she had 4 or 5 students.
Now, every teacher could dream of 4-5 students..;)
A pile of dirt cool.haha
L'école n'était pas dans une église ? 🤔😏

Yes, I am. Thanks for watching.

I read somewhere that Nellie was made up of 3 actual girls that gave Laura problems.
