  • This is a brief comparison of 2 popular video codecs MP4 vs MOV:
.MP4 is a better choice than mov on mobiles
    * Less loss of quality with higher degree of compression.
    * Compared to Mov, MP4 can run virtually on all the media players, mobile devices, and stream over the internet.
    * MP4 format gives a high quality output, equal to that of DVD.
    * MP4 is compatible with a low bandwidth, which will be faster to stream online or download/upload.
    * Designed based on MOV, MP4 is considered as the better format.
MOV is better than mp4 on Mac or Apple devices
    * MOV files are considered as high-quality files for recording, sharing and storing digital multimedia.
    * MOV can store really good looking videos in small file sizes.
    * In MOV vs MP4 comparison, the separate elements in MOV files can be adjusted while playback or edit, making MOV a good format for professional application.
    * MOV is widely accepted by many free media players like QuickTime player, Windows media player, and Real Player.
    * The size of MOV files varies based on the length and compression type it used.
    * The size of MOV files is usually larger than other media formats including MP4.

Won't be much of a difference until you have lots of action. Rain, snow, waterfalls etc... Will really kill low bitrate footage. High quality images can still be captured with low bitrate and very low motion.

This is great thanks! I just got my GH5s this week and all the other tutorials are geared towards the highest quality recording formats. I do only simple talking head tutorials in a studio, for sure after watching this I'm going to experiment and figure out the best quality to disk space trade-off for me.

On my calibrated 4k Sony 55" tv I see a slight difference in resolution, the .mov looks better but not by much at all.

For posting videos on RUclips, should I export the mov pro res default option in Final Cut Pro or export to an mp4 by selecting computer and h.264 better quality option. Looks like the mov is way more gb which I don’t care- I just want the best quality on RUclips.

Mov is uncompressed vs mp4 where it is compressed mov wins in quality but for storage mp4

Nice. The biggest problem with the Panasonic MOV format is it is not recognizable in Windows. Adobe Premiere can not handle it.

I can't get hitfilm to recognise mov files from my panasonic s5 either, reassuring seeing this video comparing the footage. However I am wanting to film in the rain specifically and someone said that where you'll see the difference 🤦 if I film in mov then convert to mp4 is that defeating the object entirely?

Interesting, however, over RUclips, I really couldn't see any difference between the MP4 and the MOV files when you showed the close up of your head. I am watching on a 27" 5k iMAC screen which is about as good as it gets but I noticed your video is HD, not 4K so wonder if any difference might show up if your video was posted in 4K. I used to do a lot of video but "retired" from it several years ago. I recently restarted as the latest generation of stills cameras (I have the Nikon Z6 & Z7ii) are amazing video cameras. These have reignited my interest in video and I have restarted editing - now in Final Cut Pro whereas several years ago I used Premier Pro. My cameras will record in either .MOV or .MP4 and I am still not sure which is the best to use. So far I have been using the ,MOV but I also integrate footage from my GoPro which records 4K in .MP4 and my iPhone 12 Max Pro which also records 4k but in .MOV. To be honest, in the edited video output for RUclips I really cannot see any difference (I output in 4K). The following video, recorded just a couple of weeks back, includes footage from all three camera systems - by the way, I used the Filmic Pro app on the iPhone (panoramic shots of the lake taken from the first hide) intro and walk around footage taken with the GoPro and the bird footage taken on the Nikon Z7ii with a 200-500 mm lens hand-held! ruclips.net/video/CZdcbTEo9dY/видео.html

Now do this test again and pan the camera right to left and left to right, change speed while you are doing that, fast then slow and you will be able to see the difference

@@camerasandcoffee3466 It's when you add movement to the footage, and that's call vlogging, my intention was to provide information to educate the viewers. And I'm honest I'll love to see you doing that video, side by side, walking and panning, so we can really compare. When you are mostly on front of the camera and talking, the only movement is on you, and in that scenario you do not need to go crazy with the amount of data per second, not a lot needed. Hey sorry if you got the wrong impression I like your videos but multiple settings exists for multiple purposes.

Small difference, but it is there. I could really see the change in detail on the sides of your face, many of the hairs are gone. Much less on the bottle, just dealt with the bloom better I think.

Damn mike you’re really making me rethink some of my settings... well most of them. There was more detail especially in the highlights but I’m not sure I would have noticed had you not mentioned it. I found myself going back and forth to see the difference. I’ll tell you 4K files have been killing me. It’s great to be able to “punch in” but not sure if it is really worth the large file sizes... nice work keep it up!
