  • We compared these tyres in a previous episode, but miserably failed to really test the important stuff (thanks Mikee !) how well do they stop the car ?
    Our 2021 FIAT Panda 4x4 cross, came shod with Continental ECO-Contact 6 tyres - a surprising factory fit for a car sold for dirt track use?
    Before taking delivery, the forums I joined all said: first cost is “get some new rubber” suitable for dirt use.
    Here in Portugal, the law is tough on any vehicle changes, so as the size is noted on your legal documents, 175 65 15’s is what it has, so that's what I need; unsurprisingly, very few options are available.
    So narrowing the search to all seasons, with strengthened sidewall, the best (on paper) I could find were some (brand unknown to me) Semperit ALLSEASON-GRIP tyres.
    As Nathan is Lisbon bound regularly, we decided to splash out on another set of wheels, so we can switch back to the Continental ECO-Contact 6’s for the motorway haul, as the paper stats show a significant noise reduction and fuel reduction having the Conti’s back on.
    Desperate to test Pete Panda off road, the Continental ECO-Contact 6’s were off after only 500km and the noisy, bad handling fuel sapping Semperit ALLSEASON-GRIP’s were on.
    So on and off both sets have been, just to see if we were imaging it? Pressures tested and checked - so what did we discover ?
    Now some cut and paste tyre blurb ….
    EcoContact 6
    The next standard enhanced by German technology.
    The new generation of Green Chili™ brings the newest and most advanced compounding technologies to the Eco tyre line:
    Maximum fuel efficiency thanks to improved component geometry and efficient silica distribution.
    The EcoContact™ 6 strikes an optimal balance between tyre size and component distribution. The high-tech compound provides robust connections between the silica and the rubber. This allows an optimal adaptation to varying road conditions, which ultimately improves the tyre’s rolling resistance and fuel consumption.
    Enhanced mileage due to the new Green Chili™ 2.0 compound.
    The advanced Green Chili™ 2.0 compound adapts to the road surface, which leads to a reduction in the rubber loss throughout its life cycle. As a result, mileage is increased.
    Optimised grip and handling experience.
    The EcoContact™ 6 offers a tailor-made pattern, resulting in the best compromise between dry and wet performance. It further increases the safety in handling situations such as lane changes. And due to its innovative asymmetric rib and sipe geometry, the tyre always keeps the contact with the road.
    The new Semperit ALLSEASON-GRIP is a balanced tyre that provides reliability, all year long. Whether you may encounter dry, rainy, muddy or snowy roads - the versatile design of this tyre helps you manage all adverse driving conditions.
    • Dry performance: Keep full control when cornering thanks to high stability and good handling on dry surfaces
    • Snow performance: Experience reliable grip and stable handling during acceleration and braking on snowy roads
    • Wet performance: Master rainy weather conditions with stable handling and short braking distances

    Once more the idea about " famous brand equals better product" is proven false. Or at least not true... So many people buys stuff based on whats popular and famous (and expensive) without ever checking out the whole market. Thank you for educating people in critical thinking when it comes to shopping.

      To be honest, I was expecting the Continentals (as they came on the car) to outperform all seasons in every way on the road, thats why I kept them on the wheels, so we could swap them when Nath used it for a Lisbon run - but we have been surprised that allseasons are just that, good at it all.

      @@DrivenMadShow Well, you seem to have made a good choice. It would be interesting to see the lifespan of the allseasons compared to the continentals, but that is not something you can do a fair comparison of, i guess. The allseasons will go on tyreshredding flint shrapnel and the continentals will go on paved roads, right?

      I was told (Facebook forum) the first thing to do with the Panda would be swap the tyres - so I did - we drove only 2 or 3 km on a dirt road in the Conti's and they look in worse shape than the Semperit ones do now after 1000km off road.
      Although I have some Michelin tyres ready to go on, we are so happy with the Semperit, that I will keep them on to see how long they last - our daily drive is an up and down hill slalom, so they are getting the worst possible treatment, I free wheel down hill, taking the bends at full chat for my amusement, so squealing is an everyday occurrence for them.

    Evening Guys.....
    This is why your channel is fascinating..... Always interesting subjects
    Can't really go wrong with Continental tyres in my uneducated & humble opinion.
    Glad to see Nath made it home from the visit to his girlfriend in one piece .....😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚 Probably slept for days to recover.
    I was worrying when Nath held the cat & you said....."There's one test we didn't do"....... I was expecting the cat to be called across the road to test the brakes at 30mph......🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
    Another cracking video.
    Keep em coming lads.
    I'm counting down the weeks to the L200 content..... But I MAYBE biased. 😜😜😜😜😜😜
    The childish me CHUCKLED out loud when you said...... "It's as wet as I can get it" Forever the cad 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
    Stay lucky. Stay safe. Stay healthy.

      The double entendres we are trying to be more covert - well spotted !
      This one was done some time ago, another banked one, although he is back safe and sound, with girlfriend, so thats great as Mrs. M. does enjoy a bit of mothering, so two is better than one (and we love having her here, other than I have to be on mildly better behaviour :)
      Reg the cat is my new best friend, as he adopted me and now lives in the mancave, I now never get a day when I do not go there as he loves his food, so Pete Panda is not heading his way just yet.
      The next two a quite interesting (maybe only to me), sorry not the L200, but my Wrangler gets some attention - miracle !! some very very sexy diff covers on on next, the old ones were interesting as well, they needed a refurb, but we would have never known if not removed them.
      Thanks for sticking with us !!

    Thats why I choose all season tyres on our Panda 4x4 because for most situations they perform better than conventional tyres.
    Especially in the wet, we get lots of that in the UK lol
    It's not worth the slight advantage of conventional tyres for the 1 week of hot sunny weather we get in summer, to consider them.
    Hankook Kinergy all season are what I have fitted, getting really good wear out of them as well.😎👍

      We are not finding any issues on our slalom downhill section home - we traverse a fantastic road here to the manshed, the Continentals squealed and so do the allseasons - as its been 40 degrees plus all week, they are getting a proper workout.

      @@DrivenMadShow Just goes to show it's not all about how much a tyre costs, generally the more you pay the better quality the tyre should be but as you found it isn't ways the case.
      I'm looking at a pair for the front of mine soon and those semperits seem to offer very good value for money and good grip.😎👍

      I can only say as I find - I would buy them again, great value as well - We did an off road day this week, the edit should go up in 3 weeks or so - I cannot believe I did not get a puncture that day, the hill descent slid me down a bottom clenching hill, with super sharp flints along with jagged stones, then we did our best Colin McRae impression on a flat bit (still very stoney ).

    merci pour ce test et votre bonne humeur,sur ma panda cross j'ai des michelin crossclimate 185/65 r15 un bon compromis été hiver. A noter les crossclimate sont homologués hiver, mais pas les michelin latitude, d’où mon choix.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  3 года назад +1

      J'ai des croix de Latitude prêtes à rouler - la taille de la voiture était de 175 et les latitudes sont de 185, je devais donc les légaliser ici - donc j'étais limité dans le choix en raison de la taille, c'est pourquoi j'ai des pneus Semperit sur le moment - ils étaient assez bon marché par rapport aux pneus Latitude, mais nous sommes surpris de leur qualité :) et d'un excellent rapport qualité-prix, nous avons donc pensé qu'il valait mieux le prouver et le partager !

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  3 года назад

      Hi Maxine - the Tcross went into the dealer and they say it's fine, - VW themselves answered me once with a long winded statement that really could have just been shortened to: " well sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't " now they are ignoring me.
      So my wife knows someone with a Tcross and she is remarkably going to lend it to me (she must be mad) so we can try that one as well - This lady hates her Tcross as it alerts he all the time (for no reason) and has slammed the brakes on a couple of times, again for no reason, so she is interested in our test. Her previous 3 cars have all been VW's so it's a shame really, she regrets changing her Touareg (if I have spelt that right) for the Tcross.

    Nice review, not really scientific as its only one go and it seems less wet when the all-seasons brake but still nice to see. Makes sense that the Eco Contacts are not great in the wet as they are eco tires and also get outperformed by almost any regular summer tire.

    I've had conti eco 5's with a new toyota aygo at first which only did 10,000 miles, perfectly maintained pressure and even wear. Very bad in the wet and useless in the slightest snow. I've now bought a dacia duster which came with conti eco 6's and they are even worse...5mm tread brand spanking new, lots of wheel spin even at low revs in the wet. They are reasonable enough in the dry but I may as well be using slicks. I've used goodyear vector all seasons on the toyota when the conti 5's ran out of tread and the difference was night and day, no aquaplaning, incredible grip in the wet at low temps and huge 8mm tread depth, much more like it. I'll suffer them with a new car but I'll never buy conti eco's myself, plenty of budget tyres better imho and top end goodyears or michelins are miles better. Tyres really ought to come new with enough tread to avoid aquaplaning, it's probably the most important job for a tyre. Continental own Uniroyal so you'd have thought they'd learn some lessons from them.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  2 года назад

      On my Panda its a 4x4 (some say toy 4x4 :) but still designed for some mild dirt roads as a minimum - you have covered exactly what I think of the tyres, utterly pointless.
      I also assumed the "eco" mode in the twinair was for fuel economy, but no, the car defaults to that (and add crap tyres) just to get a unrealistic emissions score !
      Our old 1.3 diesel, thrashed to within an inch of its life gets 55 mpg - the twinair new one if thrashed the same, 20 mpg ! and it's not like the petrol one is a rocket ship 😂
      All these things are pointless, unrealistic (dangerous with the tyres) just to meet and pass regulations that in the real world will not happen - from the environment view point - is a Diesel using a good 30% less fuel, more harmful that the petrol ? no idea myself, but with fuel prices as they are - Paddy Panda is chugging on diesel !

    • @andrewhoult
      @andrewhoult 2 года назад +1

      @@DrivenMadShow Heh yep the petrol engine models will never compete for mpg with diesel, mind you modern diesels with DPF+CAT and all the emissions gubbins like adblue etc end up being a pain after they get old. The dacia I just bought is LPG so I've cheated a bit, half the price of petrol, half the emissions and no extra price for having LPG. Only drawback is no spare wheel but I can always keep one in the garage and get someone in the family to bring it out I suppose...or maybe strap it to the roof lol. The pandas are underrated though, good 2nd hand affordable pricing and low insurance..IMHO the weak point of pandas is the electric power steering issue, I've owned 2 in the past and both broke. All Fiats and alfa romeos have a similar issue I believe. The panda 4x4's are great in the snow though.
